What the ice cream represents is a built-in reward system for being disciplined about your diet. There are components of ice cream that contain something of value to the human body. Milk products are a good source of protein, as well as calcium. Therefore, that added dairy component adds more nutrition than you will have if you adhered to other more strict low calorie diets. This can help you to stick with it long enough to get results.<br /> <br /> Many people assume that the only way to stomach this diet is to add the icecream to less desirable ingredients. Calcium content may be what you need to lose weight. Studies incdicate that calcuim is essential for weight loss. Fat is burned more efficiently when you consume calcium. Calcium supplements are always an option, but calcium rich foods are better for you. The Ice Cream Diet recommends that you do regular exercise.<br /> <br /> We do feel that the name, Ice Cream Diet, can put all manner of unusual ideas and initial thoughts in someone's head. Right? While it allows you to eat a small portion of ice cream every day, it is still a low calorie diet. It's possible people will see the title and incorrectly think they can lose weight while stuffing themselves full of ice cream.<br /> <br /> As you may already have figured out, it doesn't matter if you include ice cream in this diet or not. With this diet, men are not allowed to eat more than 2,000 calories per day, and women 1,500. Plus, it's important that you engage frequent and meaningful exercise. The small portion of ice cream you are permitted must fit into this regime. So when you think about it; when you do the exercise and restrict your calories like that; then it really doesn't matter about the ice cream, or chocolate, etc. So you can see that the ice cream in the Ice Cream Diet is purely for marketing reasons.<br /> <br /> You can lose weight with the Ice Cream Diet, and you'll have to do your part just like with any other diet. Some dermatologists argue that these low-tech tools are still the most useful and worry that their colleagues are falling for expensive, cool-looking gadgets that may simply offer extraneous, and perhaps incorrect, data.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">"This technology should still be considered to be in the developmental stage," said <a title="Information about Dr. Lucas." href="http://fsmweb.northwestern.edu/faculty/FacultyProfile.cfm?xid=17406" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: underline; ">Dr. Roberta Lucas, an instructor</a> of clinical dermatology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. "We are better off when the system supports doctors who are thorough and unhurried; who examine and listen carefully and who empower patients to practice good surveillance and sun protection."</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">In fact, some members of an expert medical panel asked to review MelaFind a few years ago for the Food and Drug Administration warned that the device had the potential to give doctors and patients a false sense of security. While MelaFind can analyze small pigmented spots identified by dermatologists as having signs of melanoma, it is not designed to evaluate other problems: large melanomas, colorless melanomas or two other types of skin cancer — basal and squamous cell carcinoma.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); "><a title="Dr. Newburger s site." href="http://www.dcwderm.com/amy.html" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: underline; ">Dr. Amy E. Newburger</a>, a dermatologist in Scarsdale, N.Y., who was a member of that F.D.A. panel, told me that she was concerned that a doctor could inadvertently use MelaFind on a non-melanoma skin cancer, receive a score indicating that the spot was not irregular, and erroneously decide not to biopsy it. She voted against recommending the device for F.D.A. approval.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">Some biostatisticians are also critical of MelaFind, saying the device can recognize a high percentage of melanomas correctly because it also falsely scores as positive so many non-melanomas — potentially prompting doctors to perform unnecessary biopsies.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">To help me visualize that issue, Jason Connor, <a title="The company s site." href="http://www.berryconsultants.com/about-us/who-we-are/" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: underline; ">a biostatistician at Berry Consultants</a>, a biostatistics consulting firm, compared the accuracy of MelaFind in distinguishing non-melanomas to a hypothetical <a href="http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/test/hcg-blood-test-quantitative/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="In-depth reference and news articles about HCG blood test - quantitative." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: underline; ">pregnancy test</a> which, used on 100 nonpregnant women, would mistakenly conclude that 90 of them were pregnant.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">"My concern with MelaFind is that it just says everything is positive," Mr. Connor said. A member of the F.D.A. panel, he abstained on a vote about whether the device's intended uses outweighed the risks.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">"I don't think this helps an aggressive doctor," Mr. Connor told me, "and unaggressive doctors could do just as well if they were more diligent without the device."</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">To develop MelaFind's current algorithm, researchers trained the system on digital images of more than 10,000 pigmented lesions, programming it to recognize irregularities like asymmetry, color variability and cellular disorganization characteristic of melanomas. Company executives said Mela Sciences deliberately calibrated the machine to catch as many melanomas as possible, understanding that such a high setting could lead doctors to biopsy normal tissue.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">"It will err on the side of caution," said Claudia Beqaj, director of commercialization at Mela Sciences. "We wanted to set the system to have such a high sensitivity that we didn't miss any melanomas."</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">(In a company-financed study submitted to the F.D.A., the device missed two out of 127 evaluable melanomas. <a title="F.D.A. review of MelaFind." href="http://www.fda.gov/downloads/AdvisoryCommittees/CommitteesMeetingMaterials/MedicalDevices/MedicalDevicesAdvisoryCommittee/GeneralandPlasticSurgeryDevicesPanel/UCM263807.pdf" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: underline; ">One F.D.A. reviewer concluded</a>: "There is inadequate data to determine any true value added for MelaFind for use by a dermatologist or other provider.")</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">Ms. Beqaj emphasized that MelaFind was intended as a supplementary test that provided extra information about a mole, not as a substitute for a dermatologist's own expertise.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">"If they blindly followed MelaFind, they would be biopsying more," Ms. Beqaj said. "The doctor has to make their own clinical judgment."</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">Dr. Day finds the system quite informative. Last week, she gave me a demonstration <a title="Dr. Day s site." href="http://www.myclearskin.com/" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: underline; ">in her office</a> on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">Dr. Day picked out what she called an "ugly duckling" mole on the left arm of Ms. Oppel, who had kindly agreed to play the role of patient. Another medical assistant removed a hand-held scanner from the MelaFind console and pressed it against the mole.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">The device uses 10 different wavelengths of light to see up to 2.5 millimeters deep into the skin and capture images of its different layers. Within a minute, the machine displayed a numerical score, indicating that Ms. Oppel's mole was irregular, but not highly likely to be a melanoma. Since the images on the screen indicated that the darkest part of the mole was concentrated around a hair follicle, an expected pigmentation pattern, Dr. Day concluded there was no immediate need for a biopsy.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">"It helps me see what I cannot see with my eye," Dr. Day said. But, given the concerns that general physicians not trained as skin experts might miss a skin cancer, the agency restricted the use of the device to dermatologists — and then only after the doctors had successfully completed a MelaFind training program. Minding children

Short and Sweet

Hi everyone - today was a bum kind of Saturday. I hung out with my best friend and went looking around for ideas to decorate, etc. I'm wanting to do something for my dinning table I won in February - it needs color but right money is obviously tight but hopefully before Christmas I can budget some fun stuff. It was a great day. I kind of cheated (SHHHH) and ate Mexican food BUT, I did eat a Taco salad minus the shell and ate about 4 bites. That was how I cheated - all that cheese and dab of sour cream. Shame on me! ha - actually, I just ate literally about 4 or 5 bites and I was like blah...... (I had some salsa and chips too ha). Anyway, My blog has over 16,000 views. I am so happy I have so many interested in my progress. I did make it to the grocery store to get a few things for meals. Tomorrow, I am going to make a homemade rub for some chicken breast and I am going to bake it wrapped up in tin foil so all of the juices can just stay within. Mmmmm. I went to the farmers market so I have fresh home grown green beans to make. I also am cooking asparagus, but not for this meal, I want to have it for a salad on Monday. I plan on dicing up the chicken that is left over for a really good salad with Asparagus and a homemade vinaigrette dressing. I also got some fresh peaches, grapes, and apples. I LOVE FRUITS AND VEGGIES!!!!!!!!! Why am I so fat??? Oh yeah, I LOVE SWEETS haha. But I don't eat them anymore. I have zero desire for cake or anything like that. Thanks BELVIQ!!!!!!! Kim that charts the artist's five-decade-long career and beautifully documents his <b>“</b>skyspaces” and other architectural constructions, most notably the ongoing Roden Crater project in Arizona.<br /><br />Turrell's career to date is covered in ten chapters interspersed by four essays—two introductory essays by Govan and Kim, the others by Alison de Lima Greene and E.C. Krupp. Kim's essay is required reading, since it not only gives a biography of Turrell's life but also features his words through interviews; after direct experience, Turrell's work is best understood through his own concise but complex descriptions. The ten chapters focus on particular themes and types of works (painting in space, blind light, sky light, etc.) that end up tracing a roughly chronological path. This means that his ongoing work at Roden Crater in Arizona is found near the end of the book; logical, since it is the culmination of his years of working with light and perception.<br /><br />The longest chapter is the one devoted to what Turrell calls "Skyspaces," typically one-room constructions with a square or circular oculus open to the sky. Skyspaces can be found all over the world, and they are the pieces that architects most appreciate because they are spatial but also transcendent. In addition to the many photographs in the book, architects should appreciate the occasional construction drawings documenting the Skyspaces and other installations. Like a magician’s secrets, they reveal what is hidden and what enables the spaces to be perceived in certain ways, while also illustrating how they are physical constructions that rely on particularly complex details.<br /><br />Not surprisingly, Turrell’s installations and Skyspaces are best experienced firsthand (this points to the obvious recommendation to visit at least one of the museums holding a Turrell exhibition). They can be discussed and documented, as they are in this book, but that is hardly a substitute for the tangible effects that happen when sensing one of his works, ideally for long durations. A good chunk of the budget, whatever the figure, most likely went into the construction of four full-size rooms that trace the Swiss-French architect's incredibly influential career. While the rooms are not immersive (one glances at them from the other side of a rope), they do more than most architecture exhibitions are able to through the usual drawings, photos, and small-scale models.<br /><br />In book form <i>An Atlas of Modern Landscapes</i> becomes a much more academic account of Le Corbusier's career, rather than a catalog of the exhibition. Many of the pieces on display at MoMA are included in the book—Richard Pare's panoramic photos commissioned for the show should be highlighted—but most of the book is made up of texts by the likes of Cohen, Stanislaus von Moos (an editor of the Kahn book below), Mary McLeod, Barry Bergdoll, Anthony Vidler, Antoine Picon, and Mardges Bacon. This does not make the book any less of a contribution than the exhibition, but something different, something to be digested in pieces slowly over time.<br /><br />Like the sequence of galleries in the exhibition, the book's chapters are geographical, which also relates to the chronological path of Le Corbusier's life: from his home in Switzerland, time spent in Germany, and travels in Italy and other countries, to his move to Paris and his increasingly larger and more international work in Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Each contributor then focuses on a particular building or city. Like Cohen's treatise for the exhibition, in general the essays examine the role of landscape in Le Corbusier's process, revealing that it was a concern, even though many interpretations describe him as a <i>tabula-rasa</i>-loving architect that ignored landscape. The view of Kahn as a hinge between modernism and postmodernism gives way to a broader understanding of the architect based on six themes: City, Philadelphia as urban laboratory; House, regional building; Science, the world as structure; Eternal Present, ruins and archetypes; Grounding, earth, water, wind, light; and Group Form, the logic of assembly.<br /><br />These themes are addressed in the dozen-or-so essays that make up the bulk of the book (most are text, but one is photography and one is a thorough chronology of important events in Kahn's life), a portfolio of Kahn's sketches and drawings, and a 60-page catalogue section that corresponds to the drawings, models, and photographs in the exhibition. Additionally, there are transcripts of interviews with some well-known architects—Frank Gehry (who designed the building the exhibition was housed in during the summer), Robert A.M. Stern, Denise Scott Brown, Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor, Sou Fujimoto, and others—on how Kahn influenced them.<br /><br />The whole undertaking attempts to elevate the status of Kahn alongside those of Corbusier, Wright, and Mies, getting over the early antagonism of architects like Peter Eisenman who said (I'm paraphrasing) "he ruined modernism." Most architects in the 20th century probably consider Kahn to be a great architect, aided by Nathanial Kahn's 2003 film <i>My Architect</i>, but as the inclusion of the interviews with contemporary architects makes clear, it's all about his lasting influence. Is it on par with the "Big 3"?<br /><br />I'd wager that Kahn's architecture will continue its influence for a long time, given his idiosyncratic attempts at getting to the beginnings of architecture. The poetic constructions of his buildings are undeniable, and the fact he's being given this major exhibition in Europe rather than the United States or India, where the majority of his buildings can be found, points to an attempt to sway a population lacking in first-hand Kahn experience (he didn't build anything in Europe). Cries of "No Gehry = No Show" followed, but Gehry eventually relented (to Thom Mayne, reportedly) and rejoined the show a couple weeks before its revised start date in mid-June (it runs until mid-September, like the Le Corbusier show at MoMA). Press also focused on the exhibition's large budget—it received a $445,000 grant from the Getty, <a href="http://news.getty.edu/press-materials/press-releases/pacific-standard-time-presents-modern-architecture-in-los-angeles.print">the most of any component of Pacific Standard Time</a>.<br /><br />Yet I had received the companion book well before the controversy and the opening of the exhibition, a signal of how publications and exhibitions are strongly wedded these days (it's close to impossible to have one without the other)—but also how they are produced relatively independently from each other. The focus of the book, like the show, is on the architects that have reshaped Southern California and become some of the most influential practitioners and academics (a two-page spread at the back of the book actually maps the teaching engagements of the various architects) on a global scale: Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne, Eric Owen Moss, Michael Rotondi, Greg Lynn, Neil Denari, Michael Maltzan, and lots of others. Photographs of their projects are the majority of the visual material in the book; only renderings of proposed pavilions by emerging architects in and around LA allude to the physical reality of the exhibition.<br /><br />The architects are presented through photographs of completed buildings (no renderings of in-progress projects) in Southern California and beyond. Their order in the book is apparently random; my best guess is age, since it starts with Gehry and ends with Ball-Nogues. But given the purely visual presentation, curator/editor Christopher Mount's introduction and the four essays interspersed between the architects (by Margaret Crawford, Johanna Vandemoortele, Sam Lubell, and Nicholas Olsberg) are especially important. A standout of these is Vandemoortele's "conversations with clients in Southern California." If the region is (still) seen as a bastion of what Eric Owen Moss calls "perpetual experimentation," then the openness of clients to allow architects to do so with their money is required. Testing, pushing, rebelling, shouting and just plain mean

Testing, pushing, rebelling, shouting and just plain mean. That's a hard act to shake.  It's comfortable.  It's habit.  It protects me on the inside.  I rolled with this submission thing for a while with nobody to submit to.  Then the old ways started back.  They creeped in slowly and the comfort they provide won out over any remorse after the fact.  Yes, it perfectly coincided with medication tinkering and taking away.  I compeltely own up to being hard to handle and the nutty one.<br /><br />So here I am - testing, pushing, rebelling, shouting and just plain mean.  A little is towards the kids.  Everything is fine until there's an argument or some problem, then I'm resorting to screaming in a flash.  Mostly towards hubby as if anything is his fault.<br /><br />This morning, I decided I'd get a lot of my work backlog taken care of and I'd be Super Wife/Mommy the rest of the weekend. I was motivated.  I started uncovering things I messed up with our businesses.  A missed payment, some late payments, we were massively overcharged for something and I paid it as it was without fixing it. For some stupid reason I sat there announcing it to him.  He told me what I should do to prevent this again, I argued none of it was my fault (wtf? it's all my fault!) and his way would just create more work for me.  He handles all finances at home but I am in charge of them for our business matters.  Kids are in the next room but it still got heated and ended up with me screaming at him about why his idea was so stupid and "I AM NOT MAKING YOU A STUPID CHART AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!"<br /><br />Hmmph!  Last words, I won!<br /><br />But I didn't win and I know good and damned well I screwed up.  He was trying to help.  His idea is probably a good one.  And I know I should've seen his effort to lead me back on the right track for what it was worth.<br /><br />He's left with the kids for the rest of the day so I can finish working.  Tonight he's going to a concert to see a member of his favorite band on the planet.  They're not all around anymore and so this is the closest it gets for anybody.  Going with one of his brothers, who all share this disturbingly deep infatuation with this band, is the icing on a perfect cake for him.  But anyway...<br /><br />No real time to talk today.  It's always the same though.  I'll apologize, as I always do.  He'll give me a look of "whatever" and we'll move on. <br /><br />I'm like an electric fence for livestock.  I promise him it's turned off and he won't get bit.  C'mon sweetie, come here... it's okay... just touch it... I promise it won't bite...  Sometimes the power is turned off.  Sometimes that tentative little touch with his fingertip goes smoothly.  Other times, it snaps and he has to reel back in self defense.  This morning, he marched right up to the fence and grabbed it with his entire hand and it shocked the crap out of him.  One can only be shocked so many times before giving up and not believing the story of it being powerless.<br /><br />I guess if he took charge in general maybe I'd be more receptive?  I'm not purposefully trying to sabotage anything.  I think though, it just comes back around to him expecting me to fix everything wrong on my own.  He "knows" he's not the problem and he'll be there with open arms when I get our lives and marriage fixed.<br /><br />He's not on board with DD as of our last conversation a few weeks ago.  He's still convinced I'm brainwashed or that I've become addicted to the idea.  I suppose I have, not for reasons of addiction but more that it resonates so deeply for me.  There's been a natural set of roles we've had all along.  He's been saying for years "lets just stick to what we do best" when i do something that's not my territory.  There's unwritten rules for both of us - no shouting, no bad words, and basic parenting things we've agreed upon.  Then there's been a list (a binder actually - <a href="http://flylady.net/" target="_blank">Fly Lady</a>) of things I have to do (both home and business) for a good year now.<br /><br />He doesn't want enforce, remind, or bring up in any way things I'm not doing or doing wrong.  Well except for sarcastic things like him making his half of the bed when I didn't do it.  I know I'm doing wrong wrong wrong.  Not on purpose so much but unwilling to stop whatever it is while it's happening.  I just think if there was something, even a little cue to tell me "chickie, you're crossing the line, shape up" that maybe it'd be easier.  Easier for me at least.  He sees that as a version of role-playing and he's adamantly opposed to that concept.  Easier for him is to walk around frustrated with me and making sure the payments on my life insurance are current (joke, it's just a joke).
