Daytona 500 to race despite crash, safety questions

We will treat that area like we do every other of the grandstand.</div><span id="midArticle_7" style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;"></span><div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">"If a fan is not comfortable where they are sitting, we make every accommodation we can," he said.</div><span id="midArticle_8" style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;"></span><div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">NASCAR and the speedway could face millions of dollars' worth of claims from the injured, litigation that would likely center on the sturdiness of the safety fence that was supposed to keep fans from danger, according to several plaintiffs' lawyers.</div><span id="midArticle_9" style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;"></span><div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">"Maybe the fence should have been higher; maybe there should have been more spacing between the track and spectators," said Adam Levitt, a lawyer with Grant & Eisenhofer.</div><span id="midArticle_10" style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans;"></span><div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">However, lawyers also said the auto-racing business would likely point to the disclaimers that it typically displays on tickets, which are designed to exempt NASCAR from any potential injury liability. We are confident in what's in place at today's event. I'm back - I was shut down by Blogger as SPAM

Blogger took down my blog as SPAM. I had too many anonymous comments that were SPAM and their automated system thought this was a SPAM blog. It took a little work to get it back up but I finally figured out how to do it. Once I figure out how, got the required information submitted, the appeal team immediately put it back up. Whew! I missed you guys. I've had to turn on moderated comments because I have to keep those spammer anonymous comments from posting or I could be taken down again.<br /><br />A lot has happened the last few months. Most important is that I re-joined Weight Watchers again in mid-December. I've only lost 12.6 pounds which means I've made my 5%. This isn't setting any records but at least it's a start. Down to 205.<br /><br />I went to my Weight Watcher meeting yesterday and found out my leader is retiring. I actually cried. She's the best Weight Watcher leader in the world. I found out why she's quitting. It's because she makes her meetings unique and they want her to conform to their standard. Her meetings are always packed and she has three of them on Saturdays where it's almost standing room only. I think Weight Watchers should conform to her, but not everyone can be like her. She's vivacious, hysterically funny, and extremely compassionate. She's a jewel. This is her last week and next Saturday my meeting will be her last meeting. It's very sad, but my girlfriend and I agreed we'd keep going to meetings and try to find someone we like. <br /><br />I'm back at the gym and have been for several weeks. I had to take off last week because I came down with a horrible cold that knocked me flat for a solid four days. I went back to the gym yesterday and had a good workout. It felt good to move again after spending almost an entire 48 hours in bed.<br /><br />The criminal trial for my husband's assault against me is tentatively set for March 5, but most likely will be delayed. I won't know for sure until Tuesday when there's a hearing with the prosecutor and my husband's defense attorney. The divorce trial isn't until November 3. Almost a year from when I filed. Long story on that one, but it's a very messy divorce. One thing that is really positvie about all of this is that I love living alone. The late night eating has completely halted as well as my obsessive TV watching. It seems to have somehow been tied to my incredibly bad marriage.<br /><br />That's about it. I guess not that much has happened. It seems like every day when I couldn't blog, I would think, 'oh, I need to blog about that!', but I couldn't. Now that I can, I'm drawing a big, fat blank. I just wanted to let you all know I'm back.<br /><br /><strong>Spam Alert:</strong> I just went back and looked at my old posts. Wow! I got hit hard by spammers. Almost every post had 200 to 500 comments. Spam comments. When I turned on moderation you can't see any of the old comments, not even the few valid ones, but that's better than seeing hundreds of spam comments. I won't go back and clean them up. Too many. I'll just leave them not visible. It's no wonder Blogger shut me down. I don't blame them. I didn't even realize this had happened since the spammer systems were hitting on old posts, never the current day's post, so I didn't even notice it. This is something everyone needs to be aware of. Check your old posts to make sure those spammer creeps aren't hitting you. Turn on comment moderation if you have to. If you get shut down, email me and I'll give you the link to get help. It wasn't easy for me to find it so I suspect others might have a problem with it too. I mistakenly thought I just needed to hit the restore blog button and all would be good. It's not quite that easy, but it is easy once you know where to go for help.

This is a copy of their COPPA consent form. In here, you can see how they've tracked and worked with this permission. It does require the parents to fill out and fax or mail the form in to NeoPets to allow children to use the communications portion of the website. This would be a website to review if you're looking at creating a portal or service that allows kids under 13 to post and communicate in ways that tracks their data. I am wondering if Facebook would eventually do something like this or if they will continue to create an environment that encourages children to lie to get on their platform. 28 in 28 #23+24: Two NYC Books

Murray<br />Gingko Press, 2012<br />Hardcover, 276 pages<br /><br /><img alt="28-28_NYC.jpg" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/28-28_NYC.jpg" title="Book cover" /><br /><br />November saw the release of two books documenting New York City in the hours between sunset and sunrise, when the glow of artificial lighting adds color to the city's sidewalks. While each book sets its sight on old establishments (you won't find Times Square in these titles), and the names <i>New York Neon</i> and <i>New York Nights</i> even confuse matters, the differences between the two are nevertheless great, as will be seen. Nevertheless, beyond the obvious overlap in subject matter and format (photography books), the books share an appreciation of New York City's ever-changing streetscapes as evidenced in early attempts at getting attention in the 24-hour metropolis. In this sense the books are as much history as photography.<br /><br />There is actually a smidgen of truth to the old statement about judging a book by its cover. That's not wise if faced with an either/or decision of which one of these books to buy, but an important difference can be gleaned from a quick glance at these covers: With its black background and floating words, <i>New York Neon</i> is about the signs, while the frontal shot on <i>New York Nights</i> signals it's about the shops and restaurants. Rinaldi describes how he initially photographed the signs a couple f-stops lower than what his light meter told him, but over time he varied the technique to show more urban and architectural context; still, detailed shots of signs on dark backgrounds are the majority. On the other hand, the photos in <i>New York Nights</i> are mainly straightforward views of a storefronts, like a nighttime version of the Murray's widely celebrated <a href="http://www.jamesandkarlamurray.com/JamesandKarlaMurraySTOREFRONT.html"><i>Store Front</i></a>. Their book is about the sensations and experience of the establishments on the sidewalk, as they invite us inside through their lighting and interior glow.<br /><br />Another major difference between the two is size. <i>New York Neon</i> is a fairly compact book that is easy to hold, all the better to hone in on the details of the signage. Photos are one or two to a page, with the occasional two-page, full-bleed spread. Captions sit in the white space on the page but the overall effect is of dark pages with splashes of color. Each sign is distinct but repetition can be found in orientation (vertical and horizontal signs predominate), color (lots of red and orange), and type of establishment (one page even features six liquor stores with very similar signs). On the other end of the spectrum is <i>New York Nights</i>, which spans over two feet when opened on a table. Most of the photographs are one to a page, documentary-like, with text on the opposite page. Each photo is therefore a decent size, enough to grasp the details captured in the duo's long-exposures.<br /><br />One more difference is how the books tell their stories beyond the photographs. With his sights squarely on neon, Rinaldi delves into a lengthy history of illumination in the city, spending a good chunk on the fascinating "anatomy of the industry." Many of the photos even credit the sign makers, a testament to the skill required to produce neon signs. The Murrays focus on the establishments through interviews with proprietors. They are not as interested in the details of lighting that give each storefront its presence at night, outside of what comes across in the photographs.<br /><br />Even with the above differences, each book is accurate in its depiction of the city at night. <i>Neon</i> is a collection of quick glances where the glow of the neon is burned into our memory. <i>Nights</i> feels like sideways glances as one walks home from a bar. been that the Heavenly Jerusalem is linked by some mysterious spiritual cord (chord?) to the Earthly Jerusalem to which I go tomorrow. </span><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14pt;">As I shift my attention from church governance and our local struggles for a more just and free Nevada, I wonder what it is I hope to find, what I am looking for in the Earthly Jerusalem.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">It is the pilgrim season but I think I do not go as a pilgrim. What is a pilgrim? What is a pilgrimage for? I no longer look for subjective spiritual experiences. What is my grail on this quest?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">We made our travel plans without a clear sense of purpose. Linda and I will take a course on Jesus at St. George’s College. That is the first thing I am looking for. I want to know more about Jesus of Nazareth. Late in my clergy life, it has become important to me to know who he was.  When I first became a priest, Jesus was not so important to me as a vague notion of the Cosmic Christ. Then I met the Risen Lord through Ignatian prayer and he became the heart of my faith.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">But what had the Risen Lord who dwelt in an invisible place accessible only to the religious imagination have to do with the historical Jesus. I thought the answer unknowable. I was a Jesus agnostic, and not without good cause.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">The Biblical scholars who struck me as most honest said we could not know much about the historical Jesus – only the 4 literary Jesus characters of the Gospels. We could not get behind the books to find the man. The writers who painted pictures of Jesus took flimsy shards of evidence to build edifices. Conveniently the evidence always fit the picture of Jesus they wanted to paint. Luke Timothy Johnson chided them for writing books about “Jesus as I particularly like to think of him” – but it seemed to me that Johnson did the same thing. Vermes’ Jesus is a good rabbi. The Jesus Seminar gave us Jesus the cynic philosopher. Schweitzer, Jesus the apocalyptic prophet who turned out to be wrong.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">As I have done my reading to prepare for this Jesus course, I have to my surprise encountered persuasive evidence based arguments for a Jesus who is pretty much the guy we find in the Bible – only we have to read the Bible in the context in which it was written. I believe now it is possible to know a great deal about Jesus of Nazareth and I hope to come back from Jerusalem knowing considerably more than I do today.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">Now that I believe that such knowledge is possible, I can admit it is important. It is important because the Risen Lord I know must be one with Jesus of Nazareth if he is to be real, if he is to have flesh, if he is to connect with history where I live. Jesus matters.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">One other part of my reading has captured my imagination. It is James Carroll’s Jerusalem, Jerusalem – the title, an allusion to Jesus’s lament over the city. The title evokes how the Earthly Jerusalem is the polar opposite of the Heavenly One, a place of strife and turmoil. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">Carroll says to understand Jerusalem, you have to understand religion, war, and the connection between the two. Relying on Rene Gerard’s theory of sacrifice, he asks how prehistoric bloodshed on this site, how the slaughter of children on this site, how this Mt. Moriah where Abraham almost slew Isaac serves as the meeting place between our violence and our redemption – somehow playing out in the field of religion. What might the endless battles over Jerusalem tell us about strife in a local congregation or the challenges of forming relationships that would constitute a diocese? Is there a connection between the bloody power struggle that ensued after the death of David and the power struggles in churches today? What does it all say about the divisions in the wider church?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">I don’t know. As I go to Jerusalem, these are thing I wonder about, things I hope to understand or perceive in a new way. But are they what God intends to show me in the City where David ruled and Jesus died? I don’t know. Perhaps we shall see.<o:p></o:p></span></div><!--EndFragment-->
