WHAT YOU CAN DO TO STOP CHILD SEX TRAFFICKING: NEVADA'S OMNIBUS HUMAN TRAFFICKING BILL

<br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">         After a church-sponsored presentation here on child sex trafficking last Spring, one person in the audience asked the panel, “What can we do about this?” The panelist answered, “Just be aware.” <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">         That doesn’t help. Telling us the world is a mess and there’s nothing we can do about it doesn’t help. But there are things we can do about it.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">         Nevadans for the Common Good has already been instrumental in combatting child sex trafficking as we have worked with schools, law enforcement, and social services. We are positioning ourselves to do a great deal more. Human trafficking is a large, complex problem, a tangled evil. There is not a single silver bullet solution. We cannot solve this problem through legislation alone. But we cannot effectively combat it without legislation. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;"><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">        We have advocated for legislative reforms in the past. We have won some and lost some. But now we have the Big Battle. Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto will present an Omnibus Human Trafficking Bill (currently, BDR 403) to the next legislative session.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">         Here’s what that Bill will do:<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">         <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">1.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Broaden the definition of the criminal conduct to include all aspects of pimp activity – recruiting, harboring, soliciting, etc. At present many aspects of the pimping process are not criminal. This bill will allow proof of any one aspect of the process to result in a conviction.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">2.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Remove the violence requirement for those who traffic children. While violence and coercion would still be an element in the charge of trafficking adults, children are more likely to be enticed and manipulated into prostitution. This statute would remove the violence requirement in cases against child sex traffickers.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">3.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">For each of the crimes covered, the penalties would be increased by one felony level. In the case of a child sex trafficker, the penalty would go from 1-5 years with the possibility (in fact the likelihood) of probation to 3-20 years with no probation.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">4.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">The law would apply criminal penalties to Johns (customers) so as to attack the problem from the demand side.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">5.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Provide specific authorization of wiretaps based on probable cause to suspect human trafficking is being conducted via telephone.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">6.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Apply racketeering, conspiracy, and gang enhancement penalties to human trafficking. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">7.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Add human traffickers to the sex offender registry. (In my opinion, this is one of the most important and potentially effective parts of this bill in actually preventing human trafficking of children.)<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">8.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Strengthen the existing (new) provisions allowing law enforcement to seize the trafficker’s assets that are the fruits of illegal activities. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">9.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">   </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Use the proceeds from seized assets to provide restitution to the victims of human trafficking.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">10.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">       </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Create a civil cause of action so that a victim of human trafficking can sue the trafficker for money damages.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">11.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">       </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Give the state the right to a preliminary hearing. This can preserve the testimony of trafficking victims who often disappear or become unavailable before trial resulting in dismissal of the charges. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .75in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;">12.<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt;">       </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">Extend the statute of limitations on rape charges arising out of child sex trafficking.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">This is not about the legalized and regulated prostitution in some rural Nevada counties. There are arguments for and against that. But this legislation is about a very different situation. This is about the coercion of adults and the manipulation of children into the illegal sex trade.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">         Our task now is to persuade legislators to pass this Bill. Do you think it is a slam-dunk? Think again. Bills increasing the penalties for child sex trafficking have repeatedly been defeated in our State Assembly. They don’t even make it out of committee. Human trafficking is a highly lucrative business. Passing this legislation will require a concerted effort by the faith community.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 16.0pt;">         So, let’s get organized! Book Review: Two Photography Books

<b><i><a href="http://www.papress.com/html/book.details.page.tpl?isbn=9781616890414">Balthazar Korab: Architect of Photography</a></i></b> by John Comazzi<br />Princeton Architectural Press, 2012<br />Hardcover, 192 pages<br /><br /><b><i><a href="http://www.artbook.com/9780983394211.html">Construction</a></i></b> by Brian Finke<br />Decode Books, 2012<br />Hardcover, 80 pages<br /><br /><img alt="book-2photos.jpg" border="0" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/book-2photos.jpg" title="Book covers" /><br /><br />At first glance the title to this biography of <a href="http://www.balthazarkorab.com/">Balthazar Korab</a> is a bit confusing, but learning that Korab considers himself "an architect who makes pictures rather than a photographer who is knowledgeable about architecture," it makes perfect sense. Comazzi traces Korab's life from Budapest to Paris (École des Beaux-Arts) to Michigan (Eero Saarinen's office and independent practice), where he still resides. Three visual sections follow the biography: Case studies of Saarinen projects that Korab documented (TWA Flight Center in New York and Miller House in Indiana); "Inflected Modernism" and "Beyond Modernism," which include more Saarinen projects but also buildings by other modern architects (Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Minoru Yamasaki, Louis Kahn, etc.) and later architects (Steven Holl, Frank Gehry, Williams Tsien, etc.); and "Additional Portfolios" of photos taken on trips (Florence, Rome) and places in and around his Michigan home (vernacular buildings, "car culture," etc.). An emphasis on Midwestern buildings and places prevails throughout the whole book, which arises both from circumstance and an appreciation of what he grew to understand. The portfolio that ends the book is the "Presidential Portfolio," a selection of photos he took when upon request of the U.S. State Department. Like the first two books, the most recent one focuses on a group of people distinguished by a profession/activity. As the cover makes abundantly clear, the construction worker's place of work—the job site—is probably the profession's most defining characteristic. The photographs veer between two extremes: long shots of buildings and sites under construction, and close-ups of construction workers, with some gradients in between. Many of the former do not include humans within their frames, yet they clearly convey the effects of people—excavations, erections of structures (like the cover), or even something as mundane as stacks of construction materials. The latter, in a similar vein, are often removed from the job site, yet they are clearly portraits of construction workers—men sitting in their wood-grain-panel trailers, a man sitting in his van, or a man cracking open a can of beer in front of a backhoe. Only one woman is photographed in the book, but given Finke's documentarian eye, this is a fact of the construction industry rather than a commentary on things. If you're venturing to Orlando, Florida, there's a decent chance that you're one of the 51 million-plus tourists that goes there every year, mainly to one of the city's theme parks. But over the next decade, a planned community in Orlando called Lake Nona will become something of an attraction as well--not for tourists, but for researchers and medical professionals.<br /><br><br /><br>Today, Lake Nona is a health-focused community that has about 7,000 people living and working in its borders. It's home to the Orlando VA Medical Center, the University of Central Florida's Health Sciences Campus, and the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. In the coming years, that number will balloon to 40,000 to 50,000 people as the community grows its "innovation cluster" of "health and life science innovation," according to Thad Seymour, president of the Lake Nona Institute.<br /><br><br /><br>That means looking at biomarker and genetic assessments to predict the likelihood of disease, but also studying online personal health assessments from the residents. Wellness & Prevention isn't just sitting on the sidelines, observing people throughout their lives--it also plans on intervening with real-time coaching and advice. Says Wiegand: "We want to understand the cohort first. If we see there is a propensity for obesity, we can provide access to weight-loss counseling."But here's where things get interesting: Johnson & Johnson's Wellness & Prevention Inc. is teaming up with the Lake Nona Institute to create a longitudinal health and wellness study of people living and working the community. "Traditionally [longitudinal studies] have always looked at disease progression, but we want to understand how people are healthy and how to keep them healthy," explains Ben Wiegand, vice president of science and innovation at Wellness & Prevention Inc.<br /><br><br /><br>Wellness & Prevention can also intervene in Lake Nona's many health care settings, potentially controlling how care is provided for the better. Among the initiative's goals: improving modifiable risk factors for disease, cutting down on chronic disease rates, and reducing participants' RealAge by 10%. In other words, the initiative is attempting to turn a slice of Orlando into a model of health for the rest of the country (and the world) to follow.<br /><br><br /><br>In addition to the longitudinal study, Lake Nona is also teaming up with Cisco, which just named it a "Smart+Connected" city for its built-in connectivity (i.e. gigabit Internet connections for all new homes). <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br />Hola voters! Well, it’s finally time for me to finally decide for whom I’m going to vote for president. For most people it’s a very simple decision to make. Most people will simply vote for the person with the “D” or the “R” next to his name. Many others are single issue voters and vote only for the “pro-life” or “pro-choice” candidate.<br /><br />On a side note, did you see the slime that Tom Friedman spewed in <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/28/opinion/sunday/friedman-why-i-am-pro-life.html" target="_blank">his column in the New York Times</a>? The one about where he talks about the “extreme” positions of many republicans when it comes to rape and abortion? While I don’t disagree with him, I find it disgusting that the man who cheered on the Iraq War, the Drone killings and any and all slaughtering of innocent lives in the Middle East wants to lecture anyone on the “Sanctity of Life.” What an incredible hypocrite.<br /><br />In fact, this very subject is why I’ve been so torn about whom to vote for. Normally, given the fact that he has basically done what he promised to do, voting for Obama again should be pretty easy. Look, the reality of it is that Obama hasn’t been that bad. The economy sucks, but it is improving albeit not as fast as we would all hope. And, given the absolute refusal of the republicans to cooperate any little bit at all, (and the cowardly actions of many democrats) what Obama has accomplished has been quite impressive.<br /><br />But, there are other things that aren’t so defensible. Obama is a fairly weak and ineffectual leader and has continued the truly monstrous drone program that has literally slaughtered hundreds, maybe thousands of innocent people, mostly women and children. He continues and has even expanded the warrantless surveillance program spying on American citizens. He has not made any move to do away with the most disturbing and authoritarian parts of the Patriot Act. He hasn’t closed Gitmo. No, what pisses me off is the way that liberals and democrats suddenly are no longer appalled by these immoral and extra-constitutional actions simply because THEIR GUY is the one doing it. That’s just outrageous and I don’t know how they look themselves in the mirror.<br /><br />As for Mitt Romney … What else is left to say? Mitt is, without a doubt, the worst human being to run for president since Richard Nixon. He is an extraordinarily dishonest man running for any office I have ever seen. He has no core principals or beliefs. He’s more than happy, without any hint of shame, to change his position on any issue at any time. I’m not just talking about the completely opposite positions he takes on most issues today than he did when he was governor of Massachusetts. I’m talking about his taking opposite positions on issues from one day to the next!<br /><br />Virtually every position Mitt Romney took during the debates is the opposite of what he has been campaigning on. The best example of this was after a year of criticizing Obama for having a set date for withdrawal from Afghanistan, he suddenly claimed he supported it. Hell, he might as well have spent that entire debate saying “ME TOO!!” That’s just one example, but the list is so very long. There was also his “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt” op-ed which has astonishingly evolved into his taking credit for the auto bailout. And then there’s the weekly flip-flopping and obfuscation on Roe v Wade, taxes, defense spending, FEMA, Medicare, Social Security and everything else. And all those things I said that keeps me from voting for Obama? Romney would continue and even expand them too. Not to mention that they will both continue and even expand the ridiculous War on Drugs crap.<br /><br />Romney is just a complete fraud. As Matt-Man likes to say, “Romney has no soul.” I think that describes him best.<br /><br />So what am I gonna do when I get into that booth? Well, if we were required to choose between Obama and Romney, the only real choice would be Obama based simply on the fact that he’s not the lying scumbag that Romney is. But, I’m going to take a stand. I’m going to engage in a one man protest. For the first time in my life I’m going to leave the Presidential section of my ballot blank. It is a process which has an organic lifespan. <br /><br />Those who thought that Spengler was defining the “decline of the West” in terms of the coming few years would have missed his historical perspective. However, the process he described took the path he predicted, in which continued expansionism in material and spatial (and therefore population) terms would occur alongside the evolutionary maturing of political structures. <br /><br />So, then, is “the West” now in that process of “decline” which the title of his book suggested would occur? And if so, then what are the ramifications of that in strategic terms? <br /><br />Clearly, in the 20th Century, the expansionist nature of “the West” came to embrace — in some senses — nations which were not Western, such as JAPAN, even the REPUBLIC OF KOREA, and other geographic outliers, such as SOUTH AMERICA and AUSTRALASIA. In these areas, as in all civilizations, and as Spengler noted, the driving force is material and geographic/territorial growth and future acquisition. It is about the future. Can this be reversed? <br />But, in essence, the answer is: if realistic grand strategic objectives of a society can be articulated, and operational strategies defined and managed, then goals can be achieved. Absent that fundamental framework — which includes the specific defining of where a society wishes to be, and understanding the context in which it wishes to achieve that status — then it will persist in a path of decline determined by the maturing and breakdown of its structures. Of course, the defining word in that process is “realistic”, itself a subjective interpretation. <br /><br />The West had, by 2012, accepted that it was in an existential crisis of identity, and that its future was to be determined in comparison with the PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA (PRC). Possibly in collaboration with, or subject to, in some respects to the PRC. But the PRC itself — indeed CHINA, not the modern state iteration of the People’s Republic — began to move from a cultural identity to a “civilizational” identity only with the death of Mao Zedong in 1976. At that point, it was enabled to move into that expansionist (in material terms) and quantitative approach to social organization. In many respects, this new CHINESE civilization mirrors that of “the West”, and is therefore measurable against it in the West’s own terms. And the PRC, as the iteration distinct from “classical CHINA”, has proven adept at playing the quantitative process as well as any Western state. This includes the presentation of quantitative “data” in ways which build internal confidence, international respect, and strategic power. Nonetheless, even by current standards of measurement, the PRC and, say, the RUSSIAN FEDERATION (RF) (at 2011 GDP indicators in US dollars), had an economic base of $9.156-trillion, and a combined population of approximately 1.5-billion; while a core of the West (even if we looked solely at the US, JAPAN, GERMANY, FRANCE, the UNITED KINGDOM, CANADA, SPAIN, AUSTRALIA, and the REPUBLIC OF KOREA) had an economic base of $35.449-trillion, and a combined population of approximately 803-million. <br /><br />The disparities, then, in per capita asset value (which can, to some degree, be interpreted as wealth), are overwhelmingly, overpoweringly, in the West’s favor. Granted, these headline statistics do not comprise the entire framework of either the RUSSO-CHINESE bloc or the West. And neither bloc is cohesive or coordinated. Granted, too, the momentum of strategic dynamics is with the PRC-RUSSIAN FEDERATION bloc, and with the concept of relatively viable EURASIAN internal communications and distribution networks. This latter consideration, in fact, may be the most significant element in the “balance” which is emerging between East and West (if the old terms can be applied to the new situation). The EURASIAN heartland is transforming the focus of much of CONTINENTAL EUROPE, as well as CENTRAL ASIA; they see the Pacific to the Atlantic infrastructure and resource/market linkages as vital, stable, and the basis of a new geopolitical framework. This is perhaps the most significant factor, along the lines of the old song “wedding bells are breaking up that old gang of mine”. The new wedding bells are, for example, between GERMANY and RUSSIA (for Russian-controlled energy supplies) and GERMANY and the PRC (for the PRC markets). And, for the time being, as GERMANY goes, so goes CONTINENTAL EUROPE. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: blue;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; line-height: 115%;">INDIA MUST OPT TO TRAVEL WITH THE MARITIME POWERS (US, UK, CANADA, AUSTRALIA, INDIA, ETC.) Barack Obama was re-elected it would, not having to play to its electoral base for a further term in office, allow some relaxation of domestic energy resources, and allow for new domestic fossil fuel refining. Similarly, its need to project power into AFRICA, or the SOUTH CHINA SEA. JAPAN would be relieved of enormous pressure. AUSTRALIA would be slightly more isolated unless the maritime powers resume their historical alliance. AFRICA would be primarily left to the PRC, INDIA, and EUROPE. THE MIDDLE EAST and its sea lanes would be less significant as a fulcrum of concern. This English-language publication comes a year after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, a fact that Ando makes explicit in the preface. In response to both events the architect has planted trees to "create an opportunity for ... spiritual recovery." The last of the six lectures deals with this response to the earthquake that hit Kobe, but the other five give a glimpse into Ando's thinking when he was taking his architecture beyond the confines of Japan. Some of the most valuable passages recall his early days and projects, and how his studio is an example of "living architecture."<br /><br />2: <a href="http://www.papress.com/html/book.details.page.tpl?isbn=9781616890551"><span style="font-style: italic;">Conversations with Paolo Soleri</span></a> edited by Lissa McCullough | Princeton Architectural Press | 2012 | <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/161689055X?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=161689055X&linkCode=xm2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Amazon</a><br />Given the name of the series, <i>Conversations</i>, it's pretty clear that the architect in question should be conversing with somebody—an interviewer, students, a room full of people, what have you. But much of the content within the books are one-way. It is much more the case with the Paolo Soleri title than others I've read. There is a short interview with editor Lissa McCullough, but the bulk of the book is made up of writings from Soleri's notebooks, as well as an essay by McCullough and ones by collaborators Marco Felici and Youngsoo Kim. The book is a good introduction to Soleri's ideas on architecture and cities, focused on the arcology concept and its realization outside Phoenix.<br /><br /><img alt="BB12-2.jpg" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/BB12-2.jpg" title="Book brief covers" /><br /><br />3: <a href="http://www.papress.com/html/book.details.page.tpl?isbn=9781568988849"><span style="font-style: italic;">A Conversation with Frei Otto</span></a> by Juan Maria Songel | Princeton Architectural Press | 2010 | <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1568988842?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=1568988842&linkCode=xm2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Amazon</a><br />When traveling for two weeks through Europe after a semester in Italy, one of the buildings that I visited was the <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/109136/ad-classics-munich-olympic-stadium-frei-otto-gunther-behnisch/olympic-munich_11/">Olympic Stadium</a> in Munich. The design, of which Frei Otto is usually given top credit, was one of the more impressive pieces of architecture that I experienced, not only for the expressive tensile roof structure but for the way the snaking roofscape worked with the landscape. Frei Otto's contributions to architecture and engineering have typically focused on the former's technological aspects, but the latter is indicative of larger considerations; those are expressed in the essays by Otto and a conversation between him and Juan Maria Songel <a href="http://ggili.com/es/tienda/productos/frei-otto">originally published by GG</a> in 2008.<br /><br />4: <a href="http://www.papress.com/html/book.details.page.tpl?isbn=9781885232021"><span style="font-style: italic;">Rem Koolhaas: Conversations with Students</span></a> edited by Sanford Kwinter | Princeton Architectural Press | 1996 | <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1885232020?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=1885232020&linkCode=xm2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Amazon</a><br />The <i>Conversation</i> that started the series was a lecture and seminar with Rem Koolhaas held at Rice University back in 1991. In the lecture Koolhaas discusses three well-known but unbuilt projects—Zeebrugge Sea Terminal, Bibliotheque de France, and ZKM Center for Art and Media Technology. The seminar, on the other hand, focuses on his thoughts on cities, including Houston, Rice's hometown. The third and last element is Sanford Kwinter's essay "Flying the Bullet, or When Did the Future Begin?" It's a small but solid book on an important architect and thinker. Yet over 20 years later, it might just be time to update Rem's conversations for the 21st century.
