His songs include signature hits for some of the most popular singers of the 20th century, and many of his tunes made their way onto the silver (and Technicolor) screen. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">I discovered Jack Lawrence through the Preston Sturges comedy, <i>The Lady Eve</i>. The film's main theme is the song "With the Wind and the Rain in Your Hair," a lyrical and wistful melody that lingers long after the final credits. In my quest to know more about the music, I came upon Jack Lawrence's website. There I found <a href="http://www.jacklawrencesongwriter.com/songs/with_the_wind_and_the_rain.html" style="color: #cc0000;">the story behind the song</a> that was a big hit for Stan Kenton in 1940 and was covered by many others including Kay Kyser's orchestra with vocalist Ginny Simms.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /><a name='more'></a></div><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1T53iV8HKXQ" width="560"></iframe> <br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">"With the Wind and the Rain in Your Hair" can be heard all through </span><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The Lady Eve</i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> - right up to the last scene</span></span></div><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Jack Lawrence's first published song, co-written at age 19 with his neighborhood friend and first writing partner Arthur Altman, became a number one hit and made a star of Emery Deutsch, "The Gypsy Violinist" who recorded it (and assumed songwriting credit for it). Then, in 1943, Columbia Records signed Frank Sinatra as a solo artist but was prevented by a musicians' strike from quickly getting him into the recording studio. It was decided to re-release the song Harry James had recorded with Sinatra as vocalist three years earlier, Lawrence and Altman's "All or Nothing at All." This time the record was a smash and the first hit of Frank Sinatra's solo career. There had been only one change made and that was to the record label. This time "Frank Sinatra" appeared in large letters above "accompanied by Harry James Orchestra" in small print. One of his early signature tunes, "All or Nothing at All" remained in Sinatra's repertoire for the rest of his career.</span></span></span></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">In 1939 Jack Lawrence composed a song on his own that became a hit in much less time than it took "All or Nothing at All." Though the song, "Linda," wasn't published until after World War II, a 1946 recording by Ray Noble with vocalist Buddy Clark made its way up the <i>Billboard </i>charts and into the top position by early 1947. Little Linda Eastman grew up to become a respected photographer. Her photo of Eric Clapton was featured on the cover of <i>Rolling Stone </i>in 1968, making her the first woman photographer to have her work appear on the front of the magazine. She later married Beatle Paul McCartney and their daughter, Stella, is a very successful fashion designer. "Linda" has been recorded by many since 1946 - from Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby to Willie Nelson, to name just a few. Paul McCartney played a recording of his own rendition of the song at the close of his memorial service for Linda in 1999, a ceremony to which he thoughtfully invited Jack Lawrence.</span></span></span><br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UCg0wtNsbwo" width="560"></iframe> <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Joan Crawford in <i>Torch Song</i></span></span></div><br />Around the same time "Linda" was published, Lawrence collaborated with composer Walter Gross, who had written music for a song that, with Lawrence's lyrics, came to be known as "Tenderly." Sarah Vaughan's version became a jazz standard and Rosemary Clooney's rendition became a mainstream hit as well as the theme for her TV variety show of the 1950s.  "Tenderly" was featured in the 1953 Joan Crawford vehicle, <i>Torch Song</i>, with Crawford's singing dubbed by <a href="http://www.indiaadams.com/" style="color: #cc0000;">India Adams</a>.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JaBBZiTFYQ4" width="420"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"> <span style="font-size: x-small;">Rosemary Clooney sings "Tenderly"</span></div><br />In 2004 at age 92, Jack Lawrence wrote his autobiography, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/They-All-Sang-My-Songs/dp/1569802793" style="color: #cc0000;"><u>They All Sang My Songs</u></a>. Jack's book tells the story of his early years in Brooklyn, his rise as a songwriter during the heyday of American popular music - along with the stories behind many of the hit songs he wrote or collaborated on. And more. At the outset of the book's 5th chapter he opens up on the most intimate aspect of his life, his sexuality. Quoting his lyrics to a hit song, Lawrence begins the chapter with:<br /><br />"It's easy to lie to strangers...<br /> But what will I tell my heart?"<br /><br />In 1925, when he was just 13, he began to realize he was strongly attracted to boys. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish home by immigrant parents and with two older brothers who were well known as ladies men, Lawrence felt increasingly frightened and isolated as his feelings emerged. He began to lead a double life, attending local dances and dating girls, trying to be "one of the guys." But he also escaped into a secret world, a world in which reading Radclyffe Hall's 1928 lesbian novel, <u>The Well of Loneliness</u>, brought him to tears. His friend took him to "rent parties," racially mixed get-togethers held in apartments rented for the weekend where the price of admission covered a drink or two and the chance to dance with other gay men as records spun on a turntable. Though Lawrence later learned that there had been gay bars to be found in New York's out-of-the-way nooks and crannies all along, he thoroughly enjoyed the wide open world he experienced in Harlem, then in the midst of its celebrated "renaissance." In addition to exploring the gay scene, he discovered the Apollo Theater and its legendary amateur nights (where the careers of Ella Fitzgerald and others were launched) and small clubs where the likes of Billie Holiday performed.<br /><br />After years of living in two worlds and near-marriage to a woman with whom he was passionately involved but not in love, Lawrence eventually encountered the man who would be the love of his life. He met Walter Myden, later a psychiatrist, in the mid-'40s and the two would spend the next 30 years living together - until Myden's death in 1975. Lawrence went on to meet another man with whom he shared a more platonic relationship up until his own death in 2009 at age 96.<br /><br />Jack Lawrence lived long enough to rest assured that the best songs of the popular standards era had endured the passage of time. He was especially pleased when Tony Bennett and k.d. lang recorded "A Wonderful World," an homage to Louis Armstrong, and thought Diana Krall's interpretation of his own "All or Nothing at All" a "lovely rendition."  Lawrence also lived long enough to see the opening of the closet door, the rise of activism and the emergence of a vibrant gay community. Looking back, Lawrence viewed it all as remarkable. Easy to talk the talk, Hard to walk the walk

Within five minutes of writing my love myself post yesterday, I caught a glimpse of myself in our hallway mirror. I actually said to myself, spoken out loud (husband out of town again this weekend), "Watch out, wide load coming through!".<br /><br />This negative self-talk is one of the hardest things for me to stop doing. I do it all day long and constantly catch myself either thinking or saying really cruel comments about my appearance. It's especially difficult now because I really don't like the way I look. I'm actually horrified by the distortion of my body and face. If anyone else talked to me like I talk to me, they wouldn't be someone I'd associate with at all. Kind of hard to do that when the person that continually puts me down is me. I'll continue to work on this, and try to say positive things in my self talk, but it's really hard!<br /><br />My husband is in Denver this weekend with his dad. It's a good thing he flew down there Saturday morning. The hospital discharged him from the hospital on Friday, and took him by ambulance back to his little apartment. The poor guy can barely walk, couldn't even get out of bed. Since he refused rehab they said they had no choice but to send him home.<br /><br />When my husband got there yesterday morning his dad said he really didn't feel well and thought he needed to go to the emergency room. Another ambulance ride back to the hospital. So Father's Day will be spent getting him moved into a rehab center to try to help him get strong enough to live on his own, although highly unlikely he'll ever move back home. Smoking = emphysema. Bad stuff. <br /><br />My plans for the day:<br /><br />First, a 9:45am spin class. Even though my eating is still not where it should be, I have managed the gym for three days in a row. It's extremely hard to exercise at my current weight (213) and going to the gym is like going to a place of torture. There's really no other way to say this:  I hate it! There's a reason you don't see a lot of really obese people at the gym. I totally understand Who would want to go to a place where everything you do hurts? You'd have to be crazy. Or have to desperately want to lose weight.<br /><br />There was a study published a few months ago stating exercise really only attributes to about 3% of our overall weight loss. I've always know this is true. I didn't know the exact percentage but you know when you burn 300 to 500 calories at the gym that really doesn't amount to much in food. Building muscle is good, but it still doesn't make that much difference in weight loss. Eating less is what's really important. What exercise does for me is work my mind. I get in the right mindset to lose weight. So my number one priority now is get to the gym, no matter what. No excuses.<br /><br />The rest of the day is sister day. Our Sunday routine is usually a movie and a late lunch or early dinner. We're going to attempt to see The Most Exotic Marigold Hotel again. The last time we tried to see this movie, it was sold out. It was at a very small, privately owned theater, that I thought would be fun to go to, but their movies sell out quickly. Plus parking was a nightmare. Today we'll go to the big chain theater where I can buy the tickets through Fandango. This time, no movie popcorn for me and dinner will be grilled fish (not steak like last time). It's all about the choices I make. <br /><br /><br />Happy Sunday!

large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">When AUSTRALIA'S Defence Minister visited CHINA in recent past, he faced a tough grilling from CHINESE experts over reports that AUSTRALIA'S 2009 Defence White Paper had a "secret chapter" about AUSTRALIA'S military support to the US in a war against CHINA. Smith denied the reports, but the impression remains that AUSTRALIA is siding with the US against CHINA.<br /><br />AUSTRALIA does not want to make a choice between the US and CHINA. Both its future prosperity and its future security depend on maintaining close relationships with each country.<br /><br />If AUSTRALIA turns its back on the US, it would lose a longstanding and very valued ally, whose support and friendship should remain central to AUSTRALIA'S security for decades to come.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: red; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12pt;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">CHOICES: ECONOMY VERSUS POLITICS </span></b></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12pt;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";"><br />On the other hand, if it turns its back on CHINA, AUSTRALIA would lose an equally valued economic partner which will be critical to AUSTRALIA'S growth prospects in the decades to come, and forgo the benefits of deeper engagement with a country that is destined to take a leading role in ASIA and beyond in many fields.<br /><br />AUSTRALIA'S future therefore depends on it being able to maintain and develop both relationships as fully as possible. <br /><br />But despite its wishes, AUSTRALIA may be forced to make a choice between the US and CHINA, if strategic rivalry between the two countries continues to grow as it has over the past few years. The more intense that rivalry becomes, the greater the risk that either the US or CHINA will press AUSTRALIA to loosen its links with the other.<br /><br />And in addition, escalating rivalry between the region's two strongest powers increases the risk of confrontation and war between them, which would be devastating not just for AUSTRALIA but for the whole region. <br /><br />It is therefore strongly in AUSTRALIA'S interest to encourage both Washington and Beijing to work with one another to avoid escalating the strategic rivalry between them. This can only be done if both sides are willing to make concessions to accommodate one another.<br /><br /></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: red; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12pt;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">USA' S STRATEGIC ASIAN ADVANCES</span></b></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12pt;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";"><br />On the one hand, CHINA must accept that the US will continue to play a key leadership role in ASIA as one of the region's great powers. The more clearly CHINA can affirm that it welcomes the US' continued strategic and political engagement in ASIA, the easier it will be to avoid escalating rivalry.<br /><br />On the other hand, the US must acknowledge that as CHINA'S power grows, it too must be accorded the status of a great power in ASIA, with a larger role in regional leadership. That means the US must step back from the role of primacy that it has exercised in ASIA for the past four decades, and deal with CHINA as an equal.<br /><br />Understandably, the US is finding this hard to accept. Some important figures, such as former national security adviser Henry Kissinger and even Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, have urged the US to redefine its role in ASIA to accommodate CHINA'S rise. <br /><br />But President Barack Obama has made it clear that he intends to resist any compromises with CHINA, and plans instead to reassert US primacy in ASIA with all the instruments of US power, including its military power.<br /><br />Moreover, Obama has made it clear that he expects US allies like AUSTRALIA to support the US as it tries to preserve its primacy in ASIA. This poses a great dilemma for AUSTRALIAN leaders, as could be seen when Stephen Smith visited CHINA last week. <br /><br />AUSTRALIAN leaders know that Obama's policies, including his military "pivot" to ASIA, run a grave risk of escalating strategic tensions with CHINA, and are therefore contrary to AUSTRALIA'S interests. But they lack the political courage to say no to Washington, or to explain to the AUSTRALIAN public how CHINA'S rise will require major changes in ASIA'S order, including in the US' role.<br /><br />So instead they try to pretend that increasing military cooperation with the US, such as the new deployment of US Marines to Darwin for training, has nothing to do with the US anxieties about CHINA. Like everyone else in ASIA, AUSTRALIANS want the US to stay as a key strategic power in ASIA, because it will help keep the peace between ASIA'S other great powers and help ensure that no one, including CHINA, tries to become a regional hegemony.<br /><br />However, AUSTRALIANS do not want the US and CHINA to become strategic adversaries, let alone enemies. They want the US to stay in ASIA on a basis which is acceptable to CHINA, just as they want CHINA to accept a continuing US role. That means they want Washington and Beijing to reach a deal on their future roles and relationship. <br /><br />We can only hope that leaders on both sides realize that they have no choice but to do such a deal, because it will be a disaster for everyone if they do not. </span></span></div>

Each craft can carry 250 marine personnel and 500-ton armored vehicles.<br />And flying overhead are Russian air transports that are touching down at Syrian air bases bearing, according to our sources, a variety of sophisticated munitions for the Syrian army: advanced Russian Pantsyr-S1 anti-air missiles capable of hitting fighter-bombers flying at an altitude of 12 kilometers and cruise missiles; self-propelled medium range anti-air Buk-M2 missiles (NATO codenamed SA-11). They are capable of downing aircraft flying at an altitude of 14 kilometers and Mach 32 speed; and shore-based Bastion anti-ship missiles which can reach vessels sailing 300 kilometers out to sea.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Russia is, in a word, supplying Bashar Assad, his regime and his army, with the very weapons they may need for warding off Western and Arab air efforts to impose a no-fly zone over Syria, while at the same time enabling him to repel seaborne assaults by his foes from the Mediterranean.<br />Since Syrian units have not been trained in the use of these advanced weapons, they are mostly likely coming with Russian technical teams to operate them - although they would be presented as “instructors.”<br />The Russians are not trying to conceal their military intervention in Syria in support of the Assad regime.<br />Friday, June 16, Anatoly P. Isaykin, director of Rosoboronexport (the Russian state arms export authority) said quite openly: I would like to say these mechanisms are really good means of defense, a reliable defense against attacks from air or sea. This is not a threat, but whoever is planning an attack should think about this.” The next day, Saturday, a source in the Russian General Staff told the Itar-Tass government news agency, “Several warships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, including large landing ships with marines aboard, are fully prepared to take to the sea in case it is necessary to protect the Russian logistics base in Tartus, Syria, since it is a zone of the Fleet’s responsibility.”</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">debkafile’s sources in Washington, Moscow and the Persian Gulf expect the Russian and US presidents to get together in the course of the G20 summit for a meeting that will determine whether or not the US and its European and Arab allies go forward with their planned military intervention in Syria.<br />Agreement between the two presidents on their Syria and Iran policies could arrest this plan, whereas their failure to agree would quicken its pace.</span></span></div>

If I love myself...

<span style="font-size: small;">I picked up a book the other day. It was used, in a big pile of used books we had at work, and it was only $.50. It's a self-help book, and a review on the back cover says "An excellent book for restructuring one's life and finding self-esteem and self-love." I hesitate to give the title yet until I've read some more. The author is listed as a "metaphysical" lecturer. I'm not sure how I feel about that so I want to read more to make sure it's not some nut-case book that I'm recommending. </span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;">This book isn't about weight loss, but the few pages I've read so far have really helped me get my head in the right place for exercise and dieting. Since I've been on a self-hate mission, using food as my method of self-destruction, I know I have issues in the self-esteem, self-love arena.</span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;">It's no secret that I've really been struggling with my weight. I've gained back a lot of the weight I lost. My weight this morning is 213.6. I was actually attempting to be careful in what I ate last week, and went to the gym three times, but I still gained three pounds in a week. Obviously, I have a problem.</span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;">In this book, there are exercises for the mind, as seems to be the rule of most books on self-esteem (this isn't my first). The book stresses the use of positive self affirmations, which have never come easy for me. Loving myself versus my natural state of hating myself is not something I'm good at doing.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;">This is the exercise I'm on now.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;">Exercise:  I Love Myself</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;">Take a pad of paper and at the top, write, "I LOVE MYSELF; THEREFORE..."</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;">Finish the sentence in as many ways as you can. I don't even like it that much and it's very unhealthy.  </span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;">I will track my food. Bite it, write it. Regardless of which weight loss plan I choose, this is critical in weight loss. Again, I'm worth the time and effort. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;">I will buy some clothes that fit so I'm comfortable and look presentable. It's just a size, it doesn't make me a bad person to wear a larger size.</span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;">I will approve of myself instead of continually disapproving of my every action.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;">This is my list off the top of my head. I'm sure there will be many more things that I will add to it. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;">Sixteen years ago, during one of my many weight loss attempts, I lost 108 pounds (I was 123 pounds, 5' 6" and actually, a little too thin). My husband told me something I've thought about a lot lately. He said "when  you're thin, you're a different person. You're happy and positive about life. You want to do things. When you gain weight, you're not happy and your entire personality changes."</span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;">He wasn't necessarily being critical, and since I was at a low weight I took it as a compliment. He spoke the truth. I am a different person on the outside when I gain a lot of weight, and as unfortunate as it may be, that changes the person on the inside too. </span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;">If I love myself, I will do this.</span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
