The Wildcats have the most highly touted freshman class since the Michigan Fab Five, and they're facing a veteran-laden Spartans team that returns two NBA-caliber players (Gary Harris and Adreian Payne). He also has an experience factor as one of the two key returners for the Wildcats on a freshmen-dominated roster, while Costello is still getting acclimated. Cauley-Stein has NBA lottery potential and he's blossoming thanks to the competition he sees in practices.</p><br /><p><strong>FORWARD:</strong> MSU senior forward Adreian Payne (6-10) vs. UK freshman forward Julius Randle (6-9).</p><br /><p><strong>Advantage goes to</strong> ... Kentucky because Randle is not only one of the best freshman in the country, he's one of the best overall players nationally as well. If that's not established already, it will be Tuesday. Payne brings more experience and an aggressiveness that will give him an upper hand, but Randle has been called a 'specimen' as Kentucky's best player in two sloppy non-conference victories, averaging 22.5 points and 15 rebounds. This matchup's must-watch.</p><br /><p><strong>GUARD:</strong> MSU sophomore guard Gary Harris (6-4) vs. UK freshman guard James Young (6-6).</p><br /><p><strong>Advantage goes</strong> <strong>to</strong> ... Michigan State. Harris had a chance to play professionally but passed on the NBA to return to East Lansing, and he's back as the Spartans' best overall player. He creates for others and can get to the rim at ease. He's wasted no time out the gate, scoring 20 points and dishing six assists in the team's opener.</p><br /><p><strong>GUARD:</strong> MSU junior guard-forward Branden Dawson (6-6) vs. UK freshman guard Aaron Harrison (6-6).</p><br /><p><strong>Advantage goes to...</strong> Michigan State. Dawson has ample experience and he usually comes off the bench but for matchup purposes he's best fitted against Harrison, who has played well early on for UK. His jump shooting complements his brother's playmaking. This is a position battle to keep your eyes on undoubtedly.</p><br /><p><strong>GUARD:</strong> MSU guard Keith Appling (6-1) vs. UK freshman guard Andrew Harrison (6-6).</p><br /><p><strong>Advantage goes to</strong> ... Michigan State, just barely. This is a pivotal matchup considering each team's point guard plays such a crucial role in their respective offenses. Appling (13.4 ppg in 2012-13) has the experience edge which trumps Harrison's athleticism and size advantages. Their roles will come down to decision making and clutch baskets in tonight's game.</p><br /><strong>BENCH:</strong><br /><p><strong>Advantage goes to</strong> ... Kentucky. You're bound to have a deep roster when you bring in six McDonald's All-Americans. Michigan State has savvy veterans off its bench in Denzel Valentine, Alex Gauna and Travis Trice, but Kentucky's loaded roster wins this battle. Sophomore double-digit scorer Alex Poythress and freshmen big men Dakari Johnson and Marcus Lee give the Wildcats plenty of back-up weaponry.</p><br /><p><strong>COACH:</strong> MSU's Tom Izzo vs. UK's John Calipari.</p><br /><p><strong>Advantage goes to</strong> ... Tie. If we're going based on resumes, Izzo wins with 16 consecutive NCAA tourneys, 11 Sweet 16s, five Final Fours and one national title. But Calipari, a national-title winning coach himself, wins based on his ability to mesh/mold young talent (as he did in 2012) and he does so with his effective dribble-drive motion offense, which caters perfect to his young group.</p><br /></div>

Texans release Reed, place Foster on IR

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>The Sports Network<br /><p>Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Houston Texans made it official on Tuesday, releasing veteran safety Ed Reed after less than one season with the club and placing running back Arian Foster on injured reserve.</p><br /><p>Reed signed a three-year, $15-million deal with the Texans in the off-season. However, injuries and off-season surgery denied him time on the field at the beginning of the year. He saw his first action with the club in Week 3 and recently lost his starting job.</p><br /><p>The Miami-Florida product had spent his entire 11-year career with in Baltimore after the Ravens selected him with the 24th overall pick of the 2002 draft. Reed has led the league in interceptions three times, totaling 61 in 160 career games. He has taken a pick back for a touchdown seven times.</p><br /><p>A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Reed helped the Ravens to the Super Bowl last season. He had four interceptions and 58 tackles in 16 regular-season games last year.</p><br /><p>This season, he has just 16 combined tackles in seven games.</p><br /><p>Foster's season is officially over thanks to a back injury. <div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Lawrence Hurley</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Supreme Court took on cases involving a heroin overdose and a drug deal gone wrong on Tuesday as the justices weighed what prosecutors needed to prove in order to convict defendants of certain federal offenses.</p> <p>In both cases, the justices appeared unsure how to proceed as they considered the appeals of two criminal defendants, Marcus Burrage and Justus Rosemond.</p> <p>Burrage was convicted in a federal court in Iowa of distributing heroin that led to the death of a drug user while Rosemond was convicted in a Utah federal court of aiding and abetting the use of a firearm during drug trafficking. Both convictions were upheld on appeal.</p> <p>In each case, the defendants are appealing lengthy prison sentences. Burrage was sentenced to 20 years on the heroin death count, although he is serving it concurrently with his 20-year sentence for selling heroin. Rosemond’s conviction on the firearms count led to a 10-year prison term on top of the four-year term he received for other offenses.</p> <p>In Burrage’s case, he argued that the government needed to show that the heroin that led to the death of Joshua Banka in Iowa in November 2009 was more than just one possible cause of death. At trial, experts said only that the heroin was a contributing factor to Banka’s death as he had also ingested other drugs at the time of his death, Burrage’s lawyers point out.</p> <p>Several justices expressed concern about the latitude the government has in prosecuting cases under the law, which imposes a mandatory minimum 20-year sentence “if death or serious bodily injury” results from use of heroin sold by the defendant.</p> <p>Justice Elena Kagan cited the expert testimony at trial, noting that there was no information on to what extent the heroin was a cause of death.</p> <p>“They had no idea whether it contributed to the death,” she said.</p> <p>DRUG DEAL</p> <p>In the second case, Rosemond was convicted of four offenses relating to a shooting that took place in Tooele, Utah, in August 2007 during an unsuccessful drug deal.</p> <p>Rosemond’s legal team says the government should have to show he took some action to encourage use of the firearm in order for him to be convicted of the aiding and abetting offense, one of four charges he faced. At trial, it was not clear whether it was Rosemond or his accomplice who was the shooter.</p> <p>As in the Burrage case, some of the justices indicated sympathy for Rosemond’s plight. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said it seemed “a bit much” that Rosemond received a 10-year sentence merely for his involvement in an underlying crime that only merited a four-year sentence.</p> <p>It is possible the court will send the case back to lower courts for further review due to concerns raised by some justices about the instructions that were given to the jury.</p> <p>“I think there is a real problem with that,” Justice Anthony Kennedy said.</p> <p>Rulings are expected by the end of June.</p> <p>The cases are Burrage v. United States, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 12-7515 and Rosemond v. MakerBot Wants You to Buy a Teacher a 3D Printer

Blue/Bloomberg</p><br /><p>Bre Pettis was the first kid on his block to have an Apple II computer. The device was intriguing, and all the neighborhood kids tinkered with it endlessly even though it served little practical purpose. Pettis went on to start MakerBot, the 3D printing company, and he sees its products in the same light: maybe they seem silly at first, but the kids will figure them out.</p><br /><p>To get kids playing with 3D printers, Pettis is emulating Apple in another way. On Tuesday, the company announced an ambitious plan to get Makerbot starter kits into classrooms. Apple has always been good at getting into schools; it sold 1.1 million iPads to educational institutions in the quarter that ended in June. These contracts represent a lucrative business opportunity for tech companies, and explain why everyone from News Corp to Amazon is scrambling to get their tablets in front of children.</p><br /><p>Selling a 3D printer to every school would be boon to Makerbot, of course, but the company hasn't lined up any public contracts. Instead, the company's education initiative is based on crowdfunding. The kits it sells, which include the company's Republicator 2 printer, some of the raw material needed to make objects, and a service plan from the company, cost about $2,550. Teachers who want one go onto DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding site for schools, and describe what they would do with the printer. They are allowed to raise everything but $98 on the site. The rest they have to come up with offline, either by paying for it themselves, or getting the PTA or parents to chip in. This kind of not-quite fully funded grant lessens the chances of the printers going to waste, says Pettis.</p><br /><p>MakerBot and DonorsChoose describe this as a plan to get a 3D printer in every school in the country, but the chances are slim it can reach that scale without help. DonorsChoose projects raised $48 million last year. Even if donors gave all their money to 3D printing projects, that much money would buy about 19,000 printers; there are about 100,000 public schools nationwide. Further, the average project size was $600, or about one-quarter of what a 3D printing kit costs.</p><br /><p>Pettis hopes that corporate donors will fund individual schools. He announced one company that has already signed on: AutoDesk, which makes 3D design software, is funding 500 projects. Pettis also said that he will be 'taking care of Brooklyn' by funding projects in his home borough. As many potential customers tried to log in to the site, which opened Oct. 1, they received error messages, or, as they tried to create security questions, they were sent back to begin the process again.</p><br /><p>'The site is getting better each week, and by the end of November, the site will be moving smoothly for the majority of users,' Bataille said.</p><br /><p>The administration will be releasing enrollment numbers later this week, Bataille said, although she did not specify a date or time.</p><br /><p>Tuesday's announcement follows a week of leaked and projected insurance exchange enrollment numbers, as well as updates on the progress of HealthCare.gov, which was taken down for several hours over the holiday weekend for more updates and fixes.</p><br /><p><i>The Wall Street Journal</i> reported Monday that only between 40,000 and 50,000 people have enrolled in an insurance plan through the federal exchange. Bataille said she could not confirm that number. However, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said last week that the numbers would be low.</p><br /><p>When Massachusetts rolled out its program, just .3% of the enrollees signed up in the first month, Bataille said, repeating an oft-cited statistic.</p><br /><p>'Given the Massachusetts experience, we expect our initial numbers will be low and grow over time,' she said.</p><br /><p>Also on Monday, Avalere Health, a health advisory company, released an analysis showing that 12 state exchanges have enrolled about 3% - or 49,100 people - so far of what they expect to during the six-month enrollment period. Avalere expects those states to enroll 1.4 million people by the end of March.</p><br /><p>Three percent of the target population is 'less than what you want to see at this point,' said Dan Mendelson, Avalere's CEO.</p><br /><p>'But they have time to turn this around,' Mendelson said. 'They have not really started to do the major visibility and advertising push.'</p><br /><p>When Medicare Part D rolled out, only 10% of enrollments had signed up one month later. Another two-thirds signed up after coverage began, Mendelson said.</p><br /><p>Despite the early problems, Mendelson said, failure is not an option for the Affordable Care Act. The Obama administration's political future is too tied to its success or failure, he said. Also, Mendelson added, insurance companies have too much invested in the law.</p><br /><p>'It's slower than what you would expect, but the companies that are offering this insurance are in it for the the long time,' he said. 'They have to be.'</p><br /><p>There has been some good news for the Obama administration this week, as well. New York officials announced today that 48,162 people had enrolled in the state exchange, while 197,011 people had completed the full process and may now enroll in plans.</p><br /><p>And Enroll America, a group devoted to enrolling Americans in the exchanges, said it had reached 302,000 people in person or by phone and has raised $27 million since March to continue its efforts.</p><br /><p>Interest in the exchanges doubled from August to September, and then doubled again from September to October, said Anne Filipic, Enroll America's president. She acknowledged that the website problems had caused a slowdown in progress, but 'we're going back to the folks we've already had a conversation with.' About 30,000 people have said they are uninsured and that they want insurance, she said.</p><br /><p>Bataille said four teams are working to fix software and infrastructure problems. So far, they've doubled the number of servers to meet the high demand, overhauled the account registration process so that they can handle 17,000 registrants per hour, tested the system to create a list of things that need to be fixed, and replaced a virtual database with a 'high capacity physical database.' She said they've reduced the error rate from 6% to 2%.</p><br /><p>They fixed 'dozens' of issues, Bataille said, such as creating user alerts so people know they can't use subsidies on catastrophic coverage, as well as allowing people to upload documents to the system. Problem solving may aid mothers of kids with autism [ BeritaTerkini ]

Seaman</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Soon after children are diagnosed with autism, their mothers may benefit from learning problem-solving skills to cope with the challenges to come, researchers say.</p> <p>In a small U.S. trial, mothers who took part in the therapy were less likely to have symptoms of stress after three months, compared to parents who only got information on how to handle their children’s diagnosis.</p> <p>“I think what this offers is an evidence-based intervention that really focuses on skill building and that does not seem to be widely available at this point,” Emily Feinberg said. She is the study’s lead author from Boston University.</p> <p>Previous studies have found that mothers of children with autism report high levels of psychological stress, symptoms of depression and isolation, Feinberg and her colleagues write in JAMA Pediatrics.</p> <p>Typically, children diagnosed with autism get a tailored plan for services, such as speech and language therapy or social skills training. But the help offered to families rarely includes mental health services for parents, the researchers point out.</p> <p>To see whether a skills therapy could help mothers stave off stress and depression, Feinberg’s team recruited mothers and their newly diagnosed children from an autism clinic and six other community programs that serve low-income families in and around Boston.</p> <p>Of the 122 mothers included in the trial, 59 were randomly assigned to receive the problem-solving skills therapy and the other 63 got the usual care prescribed in their child’s individualized treatment plan.</p> <p>The skills therapy consisted of six sessions doing workbook-guided exercises with an educator. The workbook activities helped the mothers identify problems and work toward resolutions.</p> <p>For example, a mother who said she felt lonely would be guided to identify an objective, solvable problem – such as wanting to spend time with friends, but not having anyone to watch her child while she goes out.</p> <p>She would then set goals to resolve that problem, such as asking her sister to watch her child while she has an evening out.</p> <p>The hope, according to Feinberg, is that mothers could take the problem-solving skills they gain to overcome future obstacles that could cause stress.</p> <p>About 80 percent of mothers in the therapy group completed all six sessions over two months.</p> <p>Three months after enrolling in the study, about 29 percent of mothers in the usual-care group reported a concerning level of stress symptoms, according to the researchers. That compared to 4 percent in the therapy group.</p> <p>The researchers also found a small reduction in worse-than-normal symptoms of depression among mothers in the therapy group. A larger study, however, might have been able to detect a significant difference, Feinberg said.</p> <p>She also said that another, forthcoming analysis of her group’s study will look at whether the skills mothers learned have a lasting effect by reevaluating the women nine months after they first enrolled in the study.</p> <p>Annette Estes, director of the University of Washington Autism Center in Seattle, said the new study’s findings are consistent with a paper she and her colleagues recently published.</p> <p>“Obviously, the child with autism should be the primary focus, but family has to be part of the interventions as well,” she said. “The impact on them really needs to be addressed.”</p> <p>Feinberg said the therapy tested in the new study is not currently available, but there may be support groups or traditional mental health programs available.</p> <p>“The struggle is having access to those types of programs in communities that are in lower resource areas or areas that don’t have academic centers,” Estes, who was not involved in the new study, said.</p> <p>Feinberg also said people should keep in mind that the therapy tested in the new study is not meant to directly improve outcomes for children with autism.</p> <p>“It’s important to know that this is not a substitute in any way for treatment for the child,” she said.</p> <p>Instead, the hope would be that the therapy could lead to fewer stressed parents who are better prepared to engage and follow the recommended care for their children.</p> <p>SOURCE: http://bit.ly/16Z0Y3S JAMA Pediatrics, online November 11, 2013.</p> <ul id="topics" class="hidden"></ul> //<!--[CDATA[ jQuery(".gmframe").load(function (){jQuery(this).remove();}); //]]--> <br><br>

Stephen Gandel at <a href="http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2013/11/12/wal-mart-pay-raise/" rel="nofollow">Fortune Magazine</a> reported recently that Walmart could easily pay its workers 50 percent more. Here's how Gandel calculated:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Wal-Mart has a book value of $76.7 billion. Take 15.4% of that, and that means investors are looking to get paid $11.8 billion a year. That leaves $101 billion to pay employees. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Wal-Mart paid its top executives and board members $66.7 million last year. The rest of the money has to be split among Wal-Mart's remaining roughly 2.2 million employees. Of those, about 1.4 million work in the U.S. Assume that Wal-Mart spends about 2/3 of that on the salaries of its U.S. employees, because salaries are generally higher here. That leaves $66.6 billion for the U.S. workers, or $47,593. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 30% of the average U.S. workers' total compensation is spent on benefits. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">That means the average Wal-Mart employee's take home pay should be $33,315. Wal-Mart doesn't say what its actual average salary is. But Payscale estimated it to be just over $22,000 at the end of last year.</blockquote>Of course, Walmart management won't do that. <a href="http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2013/11/12/wal-mart-pay-raise/" rel="nofollow">Walmart CEO Mike Duke has to earn 1,034 times more</a> than the company's average worker.<br /><br />Harold Meyerson points an accusing finger at Walmart for bringing Southern pay practices North. He gives a brief history in an <a href="http://prospect.org/article/40-year-slump-mobile-version" rel="nofollow">American Prospect</a> essay about the decline in American wages that began in 1974. (Thanks, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Nixon" rel="nofollow">Richard Nixon</a>.)<br /><blockquote>The definitive Southern company, and the company that has done the most to subject the American job to the substandard standards of the South, has been Wal-Mart, which began as a single store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962. That year, the federal minimum wage, set at $1.15 an hour, was extended to retail workers, much to the dismay of Sam Walton, who was paying the employees at his fast-growing chain half that amount. Since the law initially applied to businesses with 50 or more employees, Walton argued that each of his stores was a separate entity, a claim that the Department of Labor rejected, fining Walton for his evasion of federal law. </blockquote><blockquote>Undaunted, Wal-Mart has carried its commitment to low wages through a subsequent half-century of relentless expansion. In 1990, it became the country’s largest retailer, and today the chain is the world’s largest private-sector employer, with 1.3 million employees in the United States and just under a million abroad. As Wal-Mart grew beyond its Ozark base, it brought Walton’s Southern standards north. In retail marketing, payroll generally constitutes between 8 percent and 12 percent of sales, but at Wal-Mart, managers are directed to keep payroll expenses between 5.5 percent and 8 percent of sales. Managers who fail at this don’t remain managers for long. While Wal-Mart claims the average hourly wage of its workers is $12.67, employees contend it is several dollars lower... </blockquote><blockquote>By controlling a huge share of the U.S. retail market, including an estimated 20 percent of the grocery trade, Wal-Mart has also been able to mandate reduced prices all along its worldwide supply chain. In response, manufacturers have slashed the wages of their employees and gone abroad in search of cheaper labor. The warehouse workers who unload the containers in which the company’s goods are shipped from China to the U.S. and repackage them for sale are retained by low-wage temporary employment agencies, though many of those workers have held the same job for years.  </blockquote><blockquote>Shunting its workers off to temp agencies is just one of the many ways Wal-Mart diminishes what it sees as the risk of unionization. When the employees in one Canadian store voted to unionize, Wal-Mart closed the store. When butchers in one Texas outlet voted to go union, Wal-Mart eliminated the meat department in that store and in every other store in Texas and the six surrounding states. But Wal-Mart’s antipathy to unions and affinity for low wages merely reflects the South’s historic opposition to worker autonomy and employee rights. <div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>LONDON (Reuters) – John Tavener, one of Britain’s most celebrated composers whose music was played at the funeral of Princess Diana, died at his home in southwest England on Tuesday at age 69, his publisher said.</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>Tavener studied at the Royal Academy of Music and spent five decades composing. He was best known for the classical chart-topper “The Protecting Veil” and for his “Song for Athene” that was played at Diana’s funeral in 1997.</p> <p>He recorded on the Apple label and much of his work was inspired by his spirituality after joining the Russian Orthodox Church.</p> <p>But Tavener was plagued by poor health for much of his life. He suffered a stroke in his mid-30s and in 1990 was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, a genetic condition that can cause heart defects. <p><cite class="byline vcard"><span class="provider org">Reuters</span> – </cite></p> <div class="yom-mod yom-art-content" id="mediaarticlebody"> <div class="bd"> <p class="first">BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Belgian telecoms company Belgacom said on Tuesday it bought one of the three Belgian licences to operate super-fast 4G mobile services for 120 million euros (101 million pounds).</p> <p>The 20-year licence for 800 Megahertz (MHz) spectrum will supplement the 4G service Belgacom has provided since November 2012 via the existing 1.8 Gigahertz (GHz) band and through the acquisition in 2011 of a 15-year 4G licence for 2.6 GHz.</p> <p>Belgium’s telecom regulator said at the start of October that the country’s three main operators – Belgacom, Mobistar and KPN’s BASE – had bid for mobile spectrum in an auction held this month.</p> <p>The asking price was 120 million euros.</p> <p>A similar auction in the Netherlands in December 2012 opened the door for Swedish group Tele 2 to enter the market as the country’s fourth mobile operator and raised 3.8 billion euros.</p> <p>Fourth generation services enable ultra-fast mobile data traffic, allowing users for example to watch television on smartphones, tablets or laptops at a quality similar to that of a fixed line.</p> <p>Belgacom said it aimed to extend its 4G network to reach half of Belgium’s 11 million population by the end of the year.</p> <p>(Reporting by Philip Blenkinsop; editing by Robin Emmott)</p> <p></p> </div> </div> //<!--[CDATA[ jQuery(".gmframe").load(function (){jQuery(this).remove();}); //]]--> <br><br>
