Ebola outbreak in West Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak in West Africa to be an international public health emergency that requires an extraordinary response to stop its spread.<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> <br /></div> WHO declared similar emergencies for the swine flu pandemic in 2009 and for polio in May.<br /> <br /> The WHO chief, Dr Margaret Chan, said the announcement on Friday is "a clear call for international solidarity" but acknowledged that many countries would probably not have any Ebola cases.<br /> <br /> "Countries affected to date simply do not have the capacity to manage an outbreak of this size and complexity on their own,'' Chan said at a news conference in Geneva.<br /> <br /> "I urge the international community to provide this support on the most urgent basis possible," she added.<br /> <br /> The agency had convened an expert committee this week to assess the severity of the ongoing epidemic - the largest and longest in history.<br /> <br /> The current outbreak of Ebola began in Guinea in March and has since spread to Sierra Leone and Liberia.<br /> <br /> The WHO said the situation is likely to get worse in the coming months.<br /> <br /> There is no licensed treatment or vaccine for Ebola and the death rate has been about 50 percent.<br /> <br /> Unclear impact<br /> <br /> The impact of the WHO declaration is unclear; the declaration about polio does not yet seem to have slowed the spread of virus.<br /> Stopping the world's worst Ebola outbreak?<br /> <br /> During a WHO meeting last week to reconsider the status of polio, experts noted countries had not yet fully applied the recommendations made in May, that there have been more instances of international spread and that outbreaks have worsened in Pakistan and Cameroon.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a national state of emergency on Friday over the Ebola outbreak in Africa's most populous country.<br /> <br /> He approved 1.9bn naira ($11.6m) of emergency funds to contain Ebola in the country, where seven cases have been confirmed since a man fell sick on arrival from Liberia, two of whom have died.<br /> <br /> In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have already elevated their Ebola response to the highest level and has recommended against travelling to West Africa.<br /> <br /> On Thursday, CDC director Dr Tom Frieden told a Congressional hearing that the current outbreak is set to sicken more people than all previous outbreaks of the disease combined.<br /> <br /> "I don't know what the advantage is of declaring an international emergency," said Dr David Heymann, who directed WHO's response to the SARS outbreak and is now a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.<br /> <br /> "This could bring in more foreign aid but we don't know that yet," he said.

As of 4 August 2014, countries have reported 1 711 cases (1 070 confirmed, 436 probable, 205 suspect), including 932 deaths. This is currently the largest EVD outbreak ever recorded. In response to the outbreak, a number of unaffected countries have made a range of travel related advice or recommendations.</span></div> <div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; Marquez focused on staying ahead

Marc Marquez is determined to stay ahead of the pack after making it 10 straight race wins in 2014 with victory in Indianapolis on Sunday.<br /> <br /> The 21-year-old Spanish sensation became the first rider since Mick Doohan in 1997 to record a double-figure winning streak, with the Repsol Honda star prevailing by just under two seconds from Movistar Yamaha duo Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi.<br /> <br /> Marquez will now seek to extend his sequence in the Czech Republic on Sunday, having narrowly won at the Brno circuit last year.<br /> <br /> "The race was very hard, especially as the track temperature was very high," Marquez said.<br /> <br /> "I struggled a little with the front tyre so I stayed behind Rossi to try to keep the front tyre cool.<br /> <br /> "I tried to push but then the rear started sliding. Eventually I was able to open the gap and take 25 points.<br /> <br /> "We will try to fight for the victory in Brno. The test we had went well but it was very slippery so we don't have too much data.<br /> <br /> "I have never gone great there and Jorge and Vale are very strong there.”<br /> <br /> Lorenzo, meanwhile, had to settle for second best for the second time this season, but was happy to see some light at the end of the tunnel just over halfway through a frustrating campaign.<br /> <br /> "It has been a long road, but we are getting better and better," said the 2010 and 2012 champion.<br /> <br /> "This is the closest race, other than Mugello, we have had to the front.<br /> <br /> "I needed one or two tenths to catch Marquez, hopefully it will come at the next race. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga completed his impressive Rogers Cup by claiming the title with a straight-sets win over Roger Federer on Sunday.<br /> <br /> The Frenchman battled to a 7-5 7-6 (7-3) victory over Swiss maestro Federer in the final in Toronto.<br /> <br /> It marked the 13th-seeded Tsonga's 11th ATP World Tour title and first since February 2013.<br /> <br /> On his way to the title, Tsonga claimed the scalps of four of the world's top 10 - Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Grigor Dimitrov and Federer.<br /> <br /> The 29-year-old will return to the top 10 for the first time since March after becoming the first Frenchman to win on Canadian soil.<br /> <br /> Tsonga served 11 aces and gave second seed Federer no break-point opportunities during the 107-minute battle at the ATP 1000 hard-court event.<br /> <br /> Both players were comfortable on serve in the first set, until Tsonga broke to 30 in the 12th game.<br /> <br /> Tsonga wasted chances in the second, squandering break points in the sixth and eight games.<br /> <br /> His next missed opportunity was a match point in the 10th, but he made no mistake from 3-3 in the tie-break as he ran away to claim the title.
