Minding children

<span style="font-size: large;">My sister was stuck for a babysitter yesterday so I minded my niece and nephew for a few hours.  Wow, minding children is tough work.  They are great kids but they need constant attention.</span><br /><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">When they were dropped off we straightaway walked to the shops.  I gave Oliver the job of lugging my pull along shopping trolley and put Eleanor in charge of the dog. Short and Sweet

Hi everyone - today was a bum kind of Saturday. I hung out with my best friend and went looking around for ideas to decorate, etc. I'm wanting to do something for my dinning table I won in February - it needs color but right money is obviously tight but hopefully before Christmas I can budget some fun stuff. It was a great day. I kind of cheated (SHHHH) and ate Mexican food BUT, I did eat a Taco salad minus the shell and ate about 4 bites. That was how I cheated - all that cheese and dab of sour cream. Shame on me! ha - actually, I just ate literally about 4 or 5 bites and I was like blah...... (I had some salsa and chips too ha). Anyway, My blog has over 16,000 views. I am so happy I have so many interested in my progress. I did make it to the grocery store to get a few things for meals. Tomorrow, I am going to make a homemade rub for some chicken breast and I am going to bake it wrapped up in tin foil so all of the juices can just stay within. Mmmmm. I went to the farmers market so I have fresh home grown green beans to make. I also am cooking asparagus, but not for this meal, I want to have it for a salad on Monday. I plan on dicing up the chicken that is left over for a really good salad with Asparagus and a homemade vinaigrette dressing. I also got some fresh peaches, grapes, and apples. I LOVE FRUITS AND VEGGIES!!!!!!!!! Why am I so fat??? Oh yeah, I LOVE SWEETS haha. But I don't eat them anymore. I have zero desire for cake or anything like that. Thanks BELVIQ!!!!!!! Book Review: 4 Books on 4 Exhibitions

<i>The year 2013 is a good one for architecture exhibitions, and a few of them are highlighted below through their companion books. Two of the exhibitions are on 20th-century masters, one is on contemporary architecture in a specific region, and one is on an artist who is greatly appreciated by architects. Kim<br />Prestel, 2013<br />Hardcover, 304 pages<br /><br /><div class="views-field-field-booklist-review-value"><div class="field-content">Fans of James Turrell are being treated this year with three major exhibition on the artist: “<a href="http://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/james-turrell-retrospective">James Turrell: A Retrospective</a>” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), “<a href="http://www.guggenheim.org/new-york/exhibitions/on-view/james-turrell">James Turrell</a>” at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and “<a href="http://www.mfah.org/exhibitions/james-turrell-retrospective/">James Turrell: The Light Inside</a>” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. To accompany the show at LACMA, curator Michael Govan has put together an impressive catalog with Christine Y. Kim that charts the artist's five-decade-long career and beautifully documents his <b>“</b>skyspaces” and other architectural constructions, most notably the ongoing Roden Crater project in Arizona.<br /><br />Turrell's career to date is covered in ten chapters interspersed by four essays—two introductory essays by Govan and Kim, the others by Alison de Lima Greene and E.C. Krupp. Kim's essay is required reading, since it not only gives a biography of Turrell's life but also features his words through interviews; after direct experience, Turrell's work is best understood through his own concise but complex descriptions. The ten chapters focus on particular themes and types of works (painting in space, blind light, sky light, etc.) that end up tracing a roughly chronological path. This means that his ongoing work at Roden Crater in Arizona is found near the end of the book; logical, since it is the culmination of his years of working with light and perception.<br /><br />The longest chapter is the one devoted to what Turrell calls "Skyspaces," typically one-room constructions with a square or circular oculus open to the sky. Skyspaces can be found all over the world, and they are the pieces that architects most appreciate because they are spatial but also transcendent. In addition to the many photographs in the book, architects should appreciate the occasional construction drawings documenting the Skyspaces and other installations. Like a magician’s secrets, they reveal what is hidden and what enables the spaces to be perceived in certain ways, while also illustrating how they are physical constructions that rely on particularly complex details.<br /><br />Not surprisingly, Turrell’s installations and Skyspaces are best experienced firsthand (this points to the obvious recommendation to visit at least one of the museums holding a Turrell exhibition). They can be discussed and documented, as they are in this book, but that is hardly a substitute for the tangible effects that happen when sensing one of his works, ideally for long durations. A good chunk of the budget, whatever the figure, most likely went into the construction of four full-size rooms that trace the Swiss-French architect's incredibly influential career. While the rooms are not immersive (one glances at them from the other side of a rope), they do more than most architecture exhibitions are able to through the usual drawings, photos, and small-scale models.<br /><br />In book form <i>An Atlas of Modern Landscapes</i> becomes a much more academic account of Le Corbusier's career, rather than a catalog of the exhibition. Many of the pieces on display at MoMA are included in the book—Richard Pare's panoramic photos commissioned for the show should be highlighted—but most of the book is made up of texts by the likes of Cohen, Stanislaus von Moos (an editor of the Kahn book below), Mary McLeod, Barry Bergdoll, Anthony Vidler, Antoine Picon, and Mardges Bacon. This does not make the book any less of a contribution than the exhibition, but something different, something to be digested in pieces slowly over time.<br /><br />Like the sequence of galleries in the exhibition, the book's chapters are geographical, which also relates to the chronological path of Le Corbusier's life: from his home in Switzerland, time spent in Germany, and travels in Italy and other countries, to his move to Paris and his increasingly larger and more international work in Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Each contributor then focuses on a particular building or city. Like Cohen's treatise for the exhibition, in general the essays examine the role of landscape in Le Corbusier's process, revealing that it was a concern, even though many interpretations describe him as a <i>tabula-rasa</i>-loving architect that ignored landscape. The view of Kahn as a hinge between modernism and postmodernism gives way to a broader understanding of the architect based on six themes: City, Philadelphia as urban laboratory; House, regional building; Science, the world as structure; Eternal Present, ruins and archetypes; Grounding, earth, water, wind, light; and Group Form, the logic of assembly.<br /><br />These themes are addressed in the dozen-or-so essays that make up the bulk of the book (most are text, but one is photography and one is a thorough chronology of important events in Kahn's life), a portfolio of Kahn's sketches and drawings, and a 60-page catalogue section that corresponds to the drawings, models, and photographs in the exhibition. Additionally, there are transcripts of interviews with some well-known architects—Frank Gehry (who designed the building the exhibition was housed in during the summer), Robert A.M. Stern, Denise Scott Brown, Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor, Sou Fujimoto, and others—on how Kahn influenced them.<br /><br />The whole undertaking attempts to elevate the status of Kahn alongside those of Corbusier, Wright, and Mies, getting over the early antagonism of architects like Peter Eisenman who said (I'm paraphrasing) "he ruined modernism." Most architects in the 20th century probably consider Kahn to be a great architect, aided by Nathanial Kahn's 2003 film <i>My Architect</i>, but as the inclusion of the interviews with contemporary architects makes clear, it's all about his lasting influence. Is it on par with the "Big 3"?<br /><br />I'd wager that Kahn's architecture will continue its influence for a long time, given his idiosyncratic attempts at getting to the beginnings of architecture. The poetic constructions of his buildings are undeniable, and the fact he's being given this major exhibition in Europe rather than the United States or India, where the majority of his buildings can be found, points to an attempt to sway a population lacking in first-hand Kahn experience (he didn't build anything in Europe). Cries of "No Gehry = No Show" followed, but Gehry eventually relented (to Thom Mayne, reportedly) and rejoined the show a couple weeks before its revised start date in mid-June (it runs until mid-September, like the Le Corbusier show at MoMA). Press also focused on the exhibition's large budget—it received a $445,000 grant from the Getty, <a href="http://news.getty.edu/press-materials/press-releases/pacific-standard-time-presents-modern-architecture-in-los-angeles.print">the most of any component of Pacific Standard Time</a>.<br /><br />Yet I had received the companion book well before the controversy and the opening of the exhibition, a signal of how publications and exhibitions are strongly wedded these days (it's close to impossible to have one without the other)—but also how they are produced relatively independently from each other. The focus of the book, like the show, is on the architects that have reshaped Southern California and become some of the most influential practitioners and academics (a two-page spread at the back of the book actually maps the teaching engagements of the various architects) on a global scale: Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne, Eric Owen Moss, Michael Rotondi, Greg Lynn, Neil Denari, Michael Maltzan, and lots of others. Photographs of their projects are the majority of the visual material in the book; only renderings of proposed pavilions by emerging architects in and around LA allude to the physical reality of the exhibition.<br /><br />The architects are presented through photographs of completed buildings (no renderings of in-progress projects) in Southern California and beyond. Their order in the book is apparently random; my best guess is age, since it starts with Gehry and ends with Ball-Nogues. But given the purely visual presentation, curator/editor Christopher Mount's introduction and the four essays interspersed between the architects (by Margaret Crawford, Johanna Vandemoortele, Sam Lubell, and Nicholas Olsberg) are especially important. A standout of these is Vandemoortele's "conversations with clients in Southern California." If the region is (still) seen as a bastion of what Eric Owen Moss calls "perpetual experimentation," then the openness of clients to allow architects to do so with their money is required. Testing, pushing, rebelling, shouting and just plain mean

Testing, pushing, rebelling, shouting and just plain mean. That's a hard act to shake.  It's comfortable.  It's habit.  It protects me on the inside.  I rolled with this submission thing for a while with nobody to submit to.  Then the old ways started back.  They creeped in slowly and the comfort they provide won out over any remorse after the fact.  Yes, it perfectly coincided with medication tinkering and taking away.  I compeltely own up to being hard to handle and the nutty one.<br /><br />So here I am - testing, pushing, rebelling, shouting and just plain mean.  A little is towards the kids.  Everything is fine until there's an argument or some problem, then I'm resorting to screaming in a flash.  Mostly towards hubby as if anything is his fault.<br /><br />This morning, I decided I'd get a lot of my work backlog taken care of and I'd be Super Wife/Mommy the rest of the weekend. I was motivated.  I started uncovering things I messed up with our businesses.  A missed payment, some late payments, we were massively overcharged for something and I paid it as it was without fixing it. For some stupid reason I sat there announcing it to him.  He told me what I should do to prevent this again, I argued none of it was my fault (wtf? it's all my fault!) and his way would just create more work for me.  He handles all finances at home but I am in charge of them for our business matters.  Kids are in the next room but it still got heated and ended up with me screaming at him about why his idea was so stupid and "I AM NOT MAKING YOU A STUPID CHART AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!"<br /><br />Hmmph!  Last words, I won!<br /><br />But I didn't win and I know good and damned well I screwed up.  He was trying to help.  His idea is probably a good one.  And I know I should've seen his effort to lead me back on the right track for what it was worth.<br /><br />He's left with the kids for the rest of the day so I can finish working.  Tonight he's going to a concert to see a member of his favorite band on the planet.  They're not all around anymore and so this is the closest it gets for anybody.  Going with one of his brothers, who all share this disturbingly deep infatuation with this band, is the icing on a perfect cake for him.  But anyway...<br /><br />No real time to talk today.  It's always the same though.  I'll apologize, as I always do.  He'll give me a look of "whatever" and we'll move on. <br /><br />I'm like an electric fence for livestock.  I promise him it's turned off and he won't get bit.  C'mon sweetie, come here... it's okay... just touch it... I promise it won't bite...  Sometimes the power is turned off.  Sometimes that tentative little touch with his fingertip goes smoothly.  Other times, it snaps and he has to reel back in self defense.  This morning, he marched right up to the fence and grabbed it with his entire hand and it shocked the crap out of him.  One can only be shocked so many times before giving up and not believing the story of it being powerless.<br /><br />I guess if he took charge in general maybe I'd be more receptive?  I'm not purposefully trying to sabotage anything.  I think though, it just comes back around to him expecting me to fix everything wrong on my own.  He "knows" he's not the problem and he'll be there with open arms when I get our lives and marriage fixed.<br /><br />He's not on board with DD as of our last conversation a few weeks ago.  He's still convinced I'm brainwashed or that I've become addicted to the idea.  I suppose I have, not for reasons of addiction but more that it resonates so deeply for me.  There's been a natural set of roles we've had all along.  He's been saying for years "lets just stick to what we do best" when i do something that's not my territory.  There's unwritten rules for both of us - no shouting, no bad words, and basic parenting things we've agreed upon.  Then there's been a list (a binder actually - <a href="http://flylady.net/" target="_blank">Fly Lady</a>) of things I have to do (both home and business) for a good year now.<br /><br />He doesn't want enforce, remind, or bring up in any way things I'm not doing or doing wrong.  Well except for sarcastic things like him making his half of the bed when I didn't do it.  I know I'm doing wrong wrong wrong.  Not on purpose so much but unwilling to stop whatever it is while it's happening.  I just think if there was something, even a little cue to tell me "chickie, you're crossing the line, shape up" that maybe it'd be easier.  Easier for me at least.  He sees that as a version of role-playing and he's adamantly opposed to that concept.  Easier for him is to walk around frustrated with me and making sure the payments on my life insurance are current (joke, it's just a joke).

This project is cast to perfection, with every actor — in parts large or small — making the most of the sharp script from writer/directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Very few films leave us wanting more, as the screen darkens, the lights come up, and we regretfully abandon our seats. I didn’t want this one to end. Indeed, I wanted to watch it again, if only to catch some of the dialogue that was buried beneath the laughter coming from last week’s delighted preview audience.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The action takes place in the summer beach community of Marshfield, Mass., and the surrounding area on Boston’s South Shore. Although the setting is contemporary — only because we spot smart phones and ear buds — the locale feels oddly timeless, as is appropriate for the narrative. Youthful angst knows no specific era; the desperation of adolescents struggling for maturity has been relevant ever since Shakespeare’s <i>Romeo and Juliet</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This anywhen atmosphere is further amplified by Water Wizz, the somewhat dilapidated water park that plays such an important role in these events. (It’s no set; <a href="http://www.waterwizz.com/">Water Wizz</a> is a fully operational, mom-and-pop operation in East Wareham, Mass.) Back in the day, Hollywood sometimes used traveling carnivals and circuses as settings for coming-of-age sagas; fading theme parks seem to have become the modern equivalent. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I’d love to see this new film on a double bill with 2009’s under-rated <i><a href="http://derrickbang.blogspot.com/2009/04/adventureland-enjoyable-ride.html">Adventureland</a></i>, which has a similarly nostalgic vibe, although its protagonist is a bit older. Now, <i>that</i> would be a grand night at the movies.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anyway...<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Fourteen-year-old Duncan (Liam James) has been dragged along for a summer “vacation” at the beach house owned by his divorced mother Pam’s (Toni Collette) overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell). To say that Trent is a calculating bully would be understatement; he views Duncan as a potential impediment toward his pursuit of Pam — an absolutely accurate appraisal — and snatches every opportunity to crush the boy’s already fragile spirit.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><a name='more'></a><br /> <div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Carell should play bad guys more often; he’s <i>really</i> good at it. We want to smack the condescending smirk off Trent’s face the moment we meet him, and it just gets worse. Carell modulates his line deliveries so that only Duncan detects the underlying disdain; everybody else in the room believes that Trent is trying his best to “get along” with the “obstinate” boy.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The dialogue is note-perfect; Faxon and Rash have an almost scary talent for capturing the way cheerfully ruthless adults can wreak havoc with an adolescent’s disorienting emotions. The verisimilitude likely results from an author’s core mantra, to “write what you know.” Rash claims, in the press notes, that he actually endured what became this movie’s opening scene, when his mother’s second husband played a similar head-game with him.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">No wonder so much of this film’s anguish feels genuine.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But that’s not to say that Faxon and Rash have delivered a downer: far from it. True, Duncan’s plight initially gets worse, as he’s surrounded by the neighbors in this beach resort — well known to Trent — who take this setting as an excuse for spring-break-ish hedonism. But the filmmakers ensure that we share Duncan’s view that these adults are behaving very, very badly ... and that Pam, in her own way desperate enough to go along, is making a massive mistake.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But Duncan can’t articulate his own feelings, let alone find a way to offer relationship advice to his mother.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Just about the point we’re ready to die from the agony of sharing this poor kid’s worst nightmare — each of Trent’s orchestrated humiliations a bit worse than the previous one — things improve. A bit. Maybe. Probably.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Summertime next-door neighbor Betty (Allison Janney), an often inebriated free spirit with absolutely no filter, is a hot mess whose husband deserted her and their three kids. One of the latter, Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb), is a mite older than Duncan, but not so much that she’s unattainable. She also obviously understands the heartbreak of divided parents; like Pam, Susanna compensates unwisely, in this case by hitching her fragile psyche to the local “mean girls” led by Trent’s bitchy daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The immediate circle of adults is completed by Trent’s longtime friends, Kip and Joan (Rob Corddry and Amanda Peet), a wealthy couple whose sybaritic tendencies clearly poison the group dynamic. Joan is just as condescendingly unpleasant toward Pam, if a bit more artfully, as Trent is to Duncan. Peet is marvelously waspish, with Joan easily reducing Pam to deer-in-the-headlights uncertainty. We can’t help but shiver.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Duncan finally — mercifully! — finds respite at Water Whiz, where he comes under the perceptive eye of the park’s gregarious manager, Owen (Sam Rockwell). Although manifesting the persona of a goofball motormouth, Owen recognizes a desperate misfit going under for the third time. A bond is struck: initially fragile, built on Duncan’s failure to recognize when Owen is joshing him, but soon much, much stronger.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Owen’s carefree manner notwithstanding, he’s smart enough to understand the need to proceed very cautiously with his new young friend.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sadly, though, Owen doesn’t take similar care when dealing with Caitlin (the always effervescent Maya Rudolph), an employee who obviously likes him, but wishes that he’d fer-gawd’s-sake grow <i>up</i>, already.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Few young actors could survive being surrounded by such an ensemble cast of scene-stealers, but James rises to the occasion. That’s not merely impressive; it’s essential. This is Duncan’s story, and James is in virtually every scene. He perfectly captures Duncan’s awkward helplessness: the boy’s inability to fence with a cruel authority figure — Trent — who outmatches him in every respect.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">James even delivers silence unerringly, his expressive face an often tortured tapestry of misery, his words and emotions so bottled up that he can’t get <i>anything</i> out. It’s a genuinely sublime performance ... and <i>oh</i>, how we feel this boy’s pain.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Rockwell is a similar revelation. Although often typecast as a loutish jerk, thanks to varied efforts such as <i>Choke</i> and <i><a href="http://derrickbang.blogspot.com/2012/10/seven-psychopaths-deranged-in-all-wrong.html">Seven Psychopaths</a></i>, those of us who admired his one-man tour-de-force in 2009’s <i><a href="http://derrickbang.blogspot.com/2009/07/moon-thoughtful-sci-fi.html">Moon</a></i> know that he’s capable of much, much better. His work here fits that rarefied bill; his reading of Owen is rich and subtle, the character an engaging blend of gentle “tough love” and spontaneous acts of hilarious irresponsibility.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And yes, Owen uncorks a seemingly endless stream of Faxon and Rash’s hilarious one-liners, all delivered with impeccable timing.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Collette, who always brings her A-game, gives James a run for his money, as this story’s most tragic figure. Pam is caught between what she wants, and what she believes she must settle for: a dynamic most of us recognize all too well. Watch Collette’s face, as Pam struggles over who to side with, during Trent’s constant verbal duels with Duncan; she’s a master of subtlety.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Janney is a hoot as Betty, the archetype of the neighbor who doesn’t understand boundaries, and whose candor forces everything about her to bleed into everybody else’s life. And yet, her own personal agonies notwithstanding, Betty is the most honest person in the noxious little group that Trent assembles ... and, in her own way, probably the kindest.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Robb deftly handles her quieter role as Susanna: an island of calm in this roiling ocean of uncontrolled emotions. River Alexander is a hoot as Peter, Susanna’s younger brother, a cocky preteen trying to cope with how his mother fusses over his lazy eye. (Betty’s ill-advised solution: a garish eye patch.)<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Finally, Faxon and Rash give themselves small but memorable acting roles as Water Wizz employees: the former as Roddy, who controls access to the park’s signature slide tunnel; the latter as the nerdy Lewis, who staffs a sales shed that nobody visits.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My one complaint: Although Rob Simonsen’s underscore is reasonably well employed, the intrusive pop songs are bad choices that work against the film’s tone. They sound like weak Paul Simon imitations: mawkish and awkwardly sentimental, when the story clearly demands edgier material.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But that’s a small thing.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Its many delights as a successful film aside, I also must mention that <i>The Way, Way Back</i> boasts its own underdog back-story. Faxon and Rash met in 1999 as members of the Los Angeles-based Groundlings Theater, whose graduates include Paul Reubens, Kristin Wiig, Will Ferrell and this film’s Maya Rudolph. The two began writing what became <i>The Way, Way Back</i> almost a decade ago, and their script eventually wound up on the 2007 “Black List,” an annual compendium of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then they wrote and won an Academy Award for 2011’s <i><a href="http://derrickbang.blogspot.com/2011/12/descendants-doing-right-thing.html">The Descendants</a></i>. Thus armed with the clout to revive their earlier project, they’ve made their directorial debut with <i>The Way, Way Back</i>. Given the on-screen results, they’re clearly as skilled at extracting engaging performances, as they are at putting choice words in their characters’ mouths.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This one’s a treasure. See it quickly, before friends spoil any of its many pleasures ... and before media hype blows it out of proportion.</span></span><!--EndFragment-->
