Getting control

It's been eight days since I've posted anything. I don't have an explanation as to why I've been so silent. I didn't fall into a vat of Easter chocolate, or have some sort of out-of-control eight crazy day binge. <br /><br />Actually, it's been the opposite. I'm finally figuring out how to do this, after forty years of trying to eat healthy, the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place.<br /><br />Weighin 4/3/2010:  170.4<br /><br />Weekly loss:  0.6 pounds<br /><br />Total loss:  -69.0<br /><br />My goal for the week was 169.6. I didn't make it, but that's okay. Considering I was 181.2 four weeks ago on March 6, that's an eleven-pound loss for the month of March. Not too bad for someone that's been going the wrong direction with her weight for the past several months.<br /><br />I finally feel at peace with my new way of eating. There are a few new things I'm doing that has really helped with my food cravings and binges. I haven't had a binge since I made these changes four weeks ago. It's been a miracle.<br /><br />1. No added sugar<br />2. Seven to eight hours of sleep a night<br />3. Less processed foods<br />4. Mini-meals and eat more often<br /><br /><strong>Sugar</strong><br />Avoiding added sugar has been the easiest for me. The first few days without my beloved Weight Watchers ice cream bars was hell. Even after the first week of being sugar free, I almost bought a box. I'll always be addicted to sugar, but as long as avoid it as much as possible, it's losing it's hold on me. <br /><br /><strong>Sleep</strong><br />Getting enough sleep is difficult. Mainly because it really cuts into my free time. Between working full time, working out for at least an hour a day (usually an hour and a half), and preparing healthy food, plus sleeping eight hours, there really isn't much time left during a normal week day. <br /><br />I've finally realized the importance of sleep. Maybe I miss out on a TV show I wanted to see, or I can't read as many blogs or even post on my own blog, but it's made a huge difference in my binging and weight loss to actually get enough sleep every night.<br /><br /><strong>Processed foods</strong><br />I still eating processed foods, but I'm a lot more conscious about what's in the processed foods I'm eating. Not all processed food is created equal.<br /><br />About four weeks ago I was making my favorite Weight Watcher recipe for chicken fajitas. I was crunched for time, trying to get to bed by 8:30pm after getting home at 7pm. I had purchased frozen fajita vegetables. Normally I use fresh bell peppers and onions, but I keep a frozen fajita vegetable mix on hand when I'm in a hurry.<br /><br />As I was stir frying the vegetables I was reading the label. I wondered why there was 35 calories a serving and each serving was only 1/2 cup. Bell peppers and onions are extremely low in calories. <br /><br />I read the label: Red peppers, yellow peppers, green peppers, onions, corn syrup. CORN SYRUP! What the hell was corn syrup doing in my vegetables?! The rest of the ingredients (and there were several) were mostly unpronounceable. Now I understood the 35 calories per 1/2 cup.<br /><br />There are frozen bell peppers and onions without added corn syrup. I'd just been picking up a package without actually reading the ingredients. It's all processed food, some of it is healthier. <br /><br />Mainly I'm paying more attention to what I'm eating. For example, I traded out my Oroweat Sandwich thins for a slice of Dave's Killer bread. The calories are almost the same, but Dave's bread is a much better choice (see ingredients list for both at the end of this post).<br /><br />I'm not talking "clean eating". I've read the book on clean eating, and if I had all the free time in the world, I doubt I would spend that much time shopping for and preparing my food. I'm talking about "cleaner" eating. Cutting out as many of the chemicals and additives as possible without making preparing our meals my full-time job. <br /><br /><strong>Six Mini-meals a day</strong><br />We've heard this for years, eating smaller meals more often. I've been following Lyn's blog about eating six smaller meals a day on her MediFast plan. I decided to give this a try on my Weight Watcher plan. <br /><br />It's not easy because it seems like I'm eating all the time. Sometimes meetings at work get in the way, or something comes up, but it's my goal to eat about every three hours. <br /><br />My lunch and dinner are smaller these days, but my snacks are more significant. I try to always eat a carb and a protein together. I'm making sure I get 65 grams of protein a day. These complete snacks/meals with the carb and protein really help me feel satisfied.<br /><br /><strong>Conclusion</strong><br />None of this is new information. I've known all these things most of my life and you probably have too. The only thing that's new is that I'm actually making it part of my life.<br /><br />It's been four weeks since I incorporated these changes and it's made a huge difference. The craving for sugar that was once uncontrollable is gone. The starving-to-death hunger I felt on a daily basis is mostly gone too. Sometimes a meal will be delayed, then I'll feel that old familiar hunger that makes me feel crazy. Fortunately it happens a lot less often now. <br /><br />I'm pretty sure someone will comment, asking how can I live without ever having a cookie again or a piece of candy? The same way a recovering alcoholic can never have a drink again. I'll probably slip, but my intent is to give up sugar completely. I know this won't work for everyone, but it works for me.<br /><br />I feel like I'm in control these days. This is something I can do for the rest of my life. It turns out it's not about total deprivation; it's about eating healthy food, eating it more often, but in reasonable amounts. The interviewer wants details -- how does this company stand apart from its competitors, what new products or services are they offering -- and this is the moment to shine by having well-researched answers ready to deliver. If possible, mention something you are particularly familiar with about the company that you can link directly to your own work experience and talents.<br /><br />Even when asked the inevitable "What are your strengths?" find something in your own background that shows the particular talents you bring to this company's table. Put your strongest qualities into the context of what this prospective employer does and how they meet the company's goals.<br /><br />Then there's the flip side: "What are your weaknesses?" For years, people have been counseled to envelope their "weakness" in an answer that actually makes it sound like a strength. But job interviewers have heard them all, and those answers tend to sound hollow these days. Rather, choose a time when you had to face a significant challenge or adversity -- without getting too personal -- and tell how you overcame that dilemma and were improved by it. Tell what you learned and how that newfound knowledge benefited you as a professional. People who recognize their weaknesses and show they want to do better are showing a prospective employer they are willing to do their best, even if it means learning from mistakes.<br /><br />The company wants a team player and an independent worker <br />When you are asked whether you work better alone or in a team, what they really want to know is how you interact with others and how much direction you need when you're assigned to work by yourself.<br /><br />If you use time alone well, are you able to keep your boss posted on your progress at reasonable intervals? Are you good at brainstorming in a group, the one who comes up with rapid-fire ideas? Or are you the person who is likely to mold them into a collaborative effort to find a solution for the challenge at hand? Either alone or in a team, you want to convey that you can interact well with co-workers at various levels of authority, but that you're a person who can be productive and come up with answers on your own as well.<br /><br />Remember, an interview is a two-way street, and that's true where questions are concerned. Be sure to ask questions that show you have researched the company and that you're aware of current issues faced by the company and the industry it's in. You need to show an interest in the company if you want it to show an interest in you.

6 Ways to Get the Job When You're Not the 'Ideal' Candidate

After all, many job seekers can't even get a hiring manager's attention when they do appear to be a perfect fit.<br /><br />But if you believe you're capable of performing a job well despite the fact that your background doesn't completely align with the requirements of the position, there might still be hope. You need to consider yourself from a hiring manager's perspective and build a case that shows why you're the best person for the position. Following are some tips:<br /><br />1. Don't waste their time <br />First, make sure your background meets at least the most basic criteria for the position. If the job requires expertise in three specific software programs, for instance, and you are familiar with only one, don't apply. But if candidates should possess seven years of experience, and you have five, an employer might consider your application. Keep in mind, however, that some firms simply will not interview you if you don't meet every requirement, no matter how close your qualifications are. After all, companies still can afford to be picky.<br /><br />2. Find an inside connection <br />One of the best ways to get your foot in the door when you're a near fit for a job is by getting a referral from someone who can speak to the hiring manager on your behalf. Social networking Web sites such as LinkedIn and Facebook can be especially helpful in uncovering individuals who may have an "in" at your target firm, but be judicious when requesting assistance. You should have established trust and credibility with anyone you ask to go to bat for you.<br /><br />If you can, try to leverage your contacts to arrange a meeting with the hiring manager. Sometimes, all it takes to get a chance at the job is a face-to-face meeting where you can make your case directly. This allows you to establish a rapport with the employer and demonstrates your enthusiasm for the position. <br /><br />3. Address concerns upfront<br />Instead of hiding any shortcomings you possess, acknowledge them. For example, if you're overqualified for a position, use your cover letter or the interview to explain why the job nonetheless appeals to you. Perhaps after managing a large team of employees for years, you've decided you'd prefer to do more hands-on work as an individual contributor and not oversee others. Or if you're a bit underqualified, you might note how strength in one area (such as a well-regarded certification you recently earned) could make up for weaknesses in another (your lack of necessary experience, for instance). <br /><br />4. Highlight return on investment<br />Hiring managers seek employees who have a track record of saving previous employers time or money. Promote the bottom-line benefits you can offer by highlighting accomplishments in your résumé or cover letter. You could note, for example, how you spearheaded the implementation of a new billing system that saved people time when uploading data, freeing up staff to focus on other critical tasks.<br /><br />5. Offer a trial run <br />With some companies only beginning to cautiously add new staff, hiring managers are less likely to take a risk on someone who doesn't exactly match the job criteria. As a result, you might have to sweeten the deal to persuade an employer to take a chance on you. You might offer to start the job on a project or temporary basis, for instance, with the agreement that you will be brought on full time if certain performance objectives are met. <br /><br />6. Be truthful <br />Above all, keep in mind that you should never stretch the truth in an attempt to improve the odds of getting a job. Your lie could easily be uncovered, and you could damage your professional reputation, seriously harming your prospects of finding a job not only with your target firm but also other companies. <br /><br />Many organizations are willing to take smart risks on seemingly promising employees, but it's up to you to show them why taking a small leap of faith would be a wise move. Easter Weekend

<p>Hello my favorite blog friends!! I hope everyone is enjoying their Easter weekend so far! Iowa…March…80 degrees…I’ll take it!

<p>Is this week <strong><em><u>flying</u></em></strong> by or what?!?! Wait or should I say March? This week is almost over and tomorrow is the beginning of April! Learning & Moving Forward

I then proceeded to have a piece of <strong>string cheese</strong> for <strong>1 point</strong>. Then I “<em>thought</em>” I was still hungry and I ate some cereal with Kyle (that’s what he ate for supper :p). I had <strong>honey nut cheerios</strong> with a <strong>small banana</strong> for <strong>6 points</strong>.</p> <p>At the end of this was more than full! Why does my head do this to me? I would have been fine without that cereal. I can’t dwell on it though. I must <strong>learn from it</strong> and <strong>move forward</strong>! That’s the only thing I can do! :D</p> <p>Kyle & I are behind on BL episodes, so we caught up on one over the internet before hitting the pavement for a run. We ran <strong>2 miles</strong> in <strong>20 minutes</strong>. I think it was tough on me because of everything I ate, my legs are super sore from the <a href="http://weightloss-stories.blogspot.com/2010/03/ready-for-rockin-week.html">Jillian DVD yesterday</a>, and the 20 mph winds didn’t help either! But I pushed through! I only used 1/2 scoop to keep my points lower, but still get some protein in! I really want to start adding some spinach into my smoothies…but I’m nervous! </li> <li><strong>Question</strong>: Does Kyle cook anything for you?       <strong>Anaswer:</strong> You can more than tell from my blog that I am <strong><u>not</u></strong> a “chef” by any means and I would have to say Kyle is less of a cook than I am! But when it comes to breakfast he is “<strong>the man</strong>”!!! Ready for a rockin’ week!

<p>Happy Monday!! You know Monday's aren't always the most fun day, but I figure to <strong>make the best of it</strong> you just have to stay positive!! I took my camera out of my purse in my office and forgot to put it back in so <strong>no lunch pictures</strong> today, but it was leftovers, so you aren't missing much! I had <strong>1 slice</strong> of <a href="http://weightloss-stories.blogspot.com/2010/03/feeling-good.html"><strong>leftover pizza casserole</strong></a> and a serving of <strong>cottage cheese</strong> for <strong>8 points</strong>. </p> <p>I could hardly wait for 5pm to come, it was a such a <strong><u>beautiful day</u></strong> outside! I came home and tackled our <strong>to-do list</strong> we thought up on the plane ride  home from Florida! It was a slow, but good run. I got in a little over <strong>2 miles</strong> in <strong>21 minutes</strong>. It was a pretty windy evening so I think that had some impact on the run.  Overall though it felt great and I’m glad I squeezed it in!</p> <p>When I got home I re-fueled with <strong>1 c honeydew</strong> for <strong>1 point</strong>. Feeling good!

But I’m so bummed…</p> <p>I forgot to take a picture of my outfit! I wore a new <strong>denim pencil skirt</strong> from Gap ($9.97 clearance score!!), a <strong>cardigan</strong>, and a <strong>spring-y scarf</strong>…I got so many comments at church about how nice a looked & a few people asked if I had been losing weight! I know many of you have said it before…but it sure is motivating to hear those <strong><u>kind words</u></strong>!!</p> <p>I did have a<strong> fiber one bar</strong> for <strong>2 points</strong> on the way to church…photographed though. </p> <p>After church Kyle and I made breakfast! He wanted <strong>pancakes</strong> so I had a repeat of <a href="http://weightloss-stories.blogspot.com/2010/03/fun-productive-saturday.html">yesterday</a>. I kept them <strong>simple</strong> today…but I made them “just” how I like them… “<strong><u>rare</u></strong>”! Don’t ask…but I love them that way! :) I also had a small amount of Kyle’s sausage patties. Today I added some <strong>yellow & red peppers</strong> and also some <strong>ham</strong>. Fun & Productive Saturday

<p>Happy weekend everyone!! We made it! :)</p> <p>I got up early enough to see Kyle off to work. I feel bad for the poor guy, he never has Saturday’s off! :(</p> <p>I did a few things at home…i.e. sorted a winter’s worth of recycling that was piled up in shed (too cold to sort it during the winter!), took back pop cans, made a quick stop at Target and then……</p> <p>the <strong><u><em>GYM</em></u></strong>!!! It felt good to get it done after being gone for a week. Everything is back<strong><u> in it’s place</u></strong> now and we have a <strong><u>spic & span</u></strong> house! :)</p> <p>In the middle of my cleaning I took a <strong><u>break</u></strong> to have some brunch (it was after 12pm already!). I used my new <strong>Krusteaz FF pancake mix</strong> to make some pancakes. I topped them with a <strong>small sliced banana</strong> with some <strong>sf syrup</strong> on the side for dipping. It was pretty fun, not like the Hangover though. That is what I’ve been hearing everyone compare it to!</p> <p>Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! Life is like a bike ride - up a very steep hill

Yesterday I went for a bike ride in a nearby neighborhood that I've never been to before. I ended up on an extremely steep street as it wound down to the waterfront. Halfway down the hill I decided to stop and take a video (which didn't turn out).<br /><br />When I was ready to take off again, I looked at how steep the hill was going down, I decided there was no way I could do it. I had a fear of flipping over head first. I'm use to hills, but this one was a suicide hill. I decided to turn around and head back up the hill. The problem, the hill was just as steep going up it as it was going down. <br /><br />There were houses on one side and the waterfront on the other side. I kept thinking maybe there were people inside the houses watching me. My pride wouldn't let me push my bike up the hill. I thought I'm strong and powerful, I can do it.<br /><br />After six failed attempts at getting my bike started back up the hill, after coming close to falling over and crashing to the pavement, I finally realized I couldn't do it. I couldn't bike up this hill starting at the mid-point. I swallowed my pride and pushed my bike up the hill. It was humiliating, but I had no other choice.<br /><br />On my way home I starting thinking my bike ride is exactly how my weight loss has been for my entire life. Sometimes I just fly up the hills, sometimes I just can't do it and I fall, over and over I'll fall. My pride gets hurt, I'm humiliated with weight gains, and I finally, I just give up.<br /><br />Right now I'm practically coasting downhill with my weight loss. I'm going through one of those "this is so damn easy, why was I struggling" phases. I'm smart enough to know the easy button won't last forever. It never does. <br /><br />So why is my weight loss different this time? Why is this ride different than the other hundred plus times I've done this?<br /><br />Number one is you. Yes, the you that is reading this right now. I feel like I owe you something, that I want you to know this can be done. <br /><br />I'm just like you, I have a major problem with food. I love food a little too much, and it's been too big of a focus in my life. I use it for comfort and I use it for joy. I've struggled my entire life trying to get to a healthy weight and stay there. I want to prove to you it can be done by eating healthy, regular foods. I want to give you hope.<br /><br />I know how hard it is to lose weight, I've been doing it since I was fourteen. I'm fifty-four. That's forty years of trying to lose weight. You would think with all that practice I  would have figured it out. The fact is I'm great at losing weight. I've lost hundreds of pounds over the years. My problem is that I've never kept the weight off for more than a year. I bet you're sitting there nodding your head yes, and thinking "me too!".<br /><br />I want to show you this is possible. Believe me when I say this...if I can lose weight and keep it off, anyone can do it. Since I'm someone that's failed at this numerous times, it's logical that I'll fail at it again. Yet, I have confidence this time is different from all the other times. I'm not being cocky, and I'm not feeling like I'm superior or I have secret knowledge on how to do this. Or that I'm stronger or more disciplined than anyone else. In fact, just the opposite is true. I'm kind of lazy, I have no discipline, and my follow through on most things suck. Yet I truly believe I can do this, and I believe you can too.<br /><br />There are some other things that are different this time around. It has a to do with my eating, how and what I'm eating. I have a post started which I'll publish later this week. I don't know if it'll help anyone else but it's working for me. Again, it's not secret information or any new revelation. It's just something I've been trying for the last three weeks that has kind of changed my life.<br /><br />Speaking of bike rides, I think I'll go for one while the sun is still shining. <br /><br /><strong>My weighin Saturday, March 28, 2010</strong><br />I set the goal of 170 six weeks ago. I didn't quite make it, but close enough. I'm also losing a little faster than desired these last two weeks. The week before last I lost 3.2 pounds and then this week 2.8 pounds. That's a total of six pounds in two weeks. I was "talked to" by the weighin gal and then the Weight Watchers online weight tracker gave me a warning that I'm losing too fast.<br /><br />I eat all the time (every three hours when I'm awake), but my night binges are under control. It's not just any store, it's HMart. I'm in love with this place. It's like a super store of Asian markets. It's huge.<br /><br />It's a Korean store, but they carry all different kinds of Asian food and some American food too. The best part is their fresh produce section. It's unbelievable. For example, they have six different types of bok choy. The produce guys, who are all Korean, speak perfect English. The produce section is so huge they usually have four guys working in that area, putting out fresh produce. It's like a huge adventure every time I go there.<br /><br />I wanted to take pictures because it's so amazing, but it turns out grocery stores have a rule of not taking pictures inside their stores. I got into big trouble at the Metropolitan Market in Seattle a couple weeks ago. I thought the guy was going to take my camera away from me. Stupid rule.<br /><br />If you have an HMart near you, you absolutely must go visit it. It's always strange to me that there are so few Caucasians in this store. I was a towering blond amongst a sea of dark-haired, petite people. The variety of their produce and seafood is beyond amazing. He's kind of in love with me. If I leave anything of mine laying anywhere, he curls up with it and goes to sleep. This was my iPod strap left on the bed. Which is odd because my husband is the one that keeps letting him in the house. A body worth keeping

I've had very few dreams in the last couple of years that I actually remembered when I woke up. Since I started sleeping more I've been remembering my dreams. Some of the dreams are good, some not so good, some borderline nightmares.<br /><br />Last night was a good dream. I think it stemmed from something I've started doing every morning after I get out of the shower. The idea came from <a href="http://mepschronicles.blogspot.com/" target="blank">Mary</a>, when she suggested to try and say something nice about our body.<br /><br />I've been doing the opposite for years. Almost every day I've been saying something or several things bad about my body for as long as I can remember. During the past week, each day I've stood in front of the mirror, naked, and found something positive to focus on. <br /><br />This little task is not always easy. My natural response is to immediately go for the negative. Hips too wide, thighs too fat, stomach sticks out too much. You know the routine.<br /><br />Every morning  last week I said something nice to myself about my body. Nice shoulders, strong arms, narrow waist, strong legs. I also touch the body part and could feel the muscles underneath the skin. Skin that's 54 years old and has been stretched and shrunk many times with my yo-yo dieting. Even though it's not the taut skin of a 20-year old, it's still soft with firm muscle underneath in most areas.<br /><br />I still turn sideways and stare at my belly with disdain, as well as the hips and thighs. However, I try to end each one of these morning evaluations with something positive. Love the shoulders Diana! Great triceps! Just one positive thing. <br /><br />The dream last night was odd, but it was a good dream. I was doing the Camel yoga pose. It's the pose where you kneel, bend backwards arching your spine and grab your ankles, and stretch, tucking your hips in and thrusting out your chest. <br /><br />While I was doing this, I was also outside my body. My other self was touching my naked back, admiring the firmness of it. My stomach didn't stick out since I was arched backwards. In my dream I didn't even notice my hips or my thighs. I just remember thinking what a strong body I had, that I liked it. That it was a good body.<br /><br />It was just a dream, but I woke up thinking wow, that was profound. Was that my subconscious telling me it's okay that my hips are too wide and my thighs are fat? That I'm still strong and powerful and should be happier with my body.<br /><br />Another thought I had when I woke up this morning is that I'll never be fat again. I know we all say that when we lose weight. It's the mantra I hear and read all the time. I've done it myself. <br /><br />Recently I went back to some of my old posts where I said "85 pounds gone forever!". I was so cocky and so sure of myself. Then I gained 20 pounds. That knocked the wind right out of my sails.<br /><br />I'm completely back on plan now and have been for about three weeks. I've made some significant changes in my eating which I'll write about in a later post. Things that we all know, but I never actually tried doing. There's no magic pill, but there are things that work like magic (with a little hard work thrown in).<br /><br />I think I want to keep this body. If it means an hour at the gym every day for the rest of my life, I'm okay with it. I've been doing that for over two years now and it's really not that big of a deal. If it means I have to eat less but eat healthy, delicious foods, I can do that too. This body is worth any hard work it takes to keep it as healthy as possible for as long as possible. It's a body worth keeping.<br /><br />I guess I found my words. :)

Finally Friday

<p>I know, I know I only had a 2 day work week, but I'm ready for some down time to clean the house and just chill! It’s been a <u>LONG</u> time since I was there! ;)</p> <p>After getting back to town after my presentation I met up with Kyle at the grocery store. Finally we will be re-stocked!</p> <p>One *new* thing I picked up was <strong>Boca burgers</strong>. It took a lot of time and work to get where I am today!</em></p> <p align="center"><em>Tips for shedding lbs!- well the best tip I can give is to stay motivated and keep that desire to want to lose weight in your head... When you do "cheat" a little, just get back to that mind set of losing weight and get right back to your normal routine of eating and exercising and burn those calories you took in!:) I try to eat little meals throughout the day, my normal eat/snack times right now are 9, 12:30, 3, 6, and 8:30.</em></p> <p align="center"><em>I have seen living proof (my aunts) of people that have lost so much weight and put it almost all back on because they let one "cheat" lead to another, and another...and another!
