The updated policy will clarify that listings for Bitcoin and other similar virtual currencies must be listed in the Virtual Currency Category in the Classified Ad format.<br />The Virtual Currency category is expected to be available on the UK site on February 10th.”</blockquote>A Reddit post earlier today sparked rumours of the change in policy. The post included an email from eBay stating that the company does not currently permit listings of digital currencies, but that this will soon change.<br /><a href="http://s24.postimg.org/hkrd5makl/Capture.png" target="_blank">The email</a> reads:<br /><blockquote>“Please know that per our recent policy update, Virtual Currency (i.e. Bitcoin and Litecoin), whether digitally or physically delivered, cannot be listed in Auction-style or Buy-It-Now listing formats. eBay is opening a Virtual Currency category to allow the sale of virtual currency in Classified Ads format on February 10, 2014.<br />We request that you do not list these items until that date. Please be informed that repeated breach of the policy may further jeopardize your account status. To avoid any inconvenience in future, we’d appreciated it if you go through our help pages or contact us before listing any such items.”</blockquote>At press time, the policy change only applies to eBay’s UK site. An eBay customer service representative said: “Our policies are different for different country sites, so to know more about other countries, you need to contact the respective eBay sites.”<br />In December, an eBay user found a loophole that enabled him to sell digital currency via the site. The company has shown it is certainly not anti-bitcoin, and that it is prepared to adjust its policies to accommodate the fledgling currency and its alternatives.<br />The firm’s bosses have made it clear they are interested in virtual currency and they are sure to be watching closely as other large online retailers start to accept it as a form of payment.<br />Overstock – a company with revenue of $1.1bn for 2012 – <a href="http://www.coindesk.com/overstock-opens-bitcoin-sales/">started accepting bitcoin</a> last week, using California-based online wallet and payment processing firm <a href="http://www.coindesk.com/companies/coinbase/">Coinbase</a> to handle its transactions. The company subsequently enjoyed a huge surge in sales, as CEO Patrick Byrne revealed on Twitter.<br />Byrne said <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0-S0ErCohA" target="_blank">in a recent interview with CNN International</a> that he is certain other retail giants will follow his company’s lead and start accepting bitcoin payments soon.<br />“This forces the hand of Amazon and some other big players. They have to follow suit. You will see them follow suit, I’ll be stunned if you don’t, because they can’t just cede that part of the market to us, if we’re the only main, large retail site taking bitcoin. Bullets are still cheap enough though.<br /><br /><br />As I recall, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/19/us/19death.html?_r=0">Utah still uses the Firing Squad for death penalty executions.</a><br /><br />With the European drug companies deciding they don't want US executions using their products anymore and the latest execution that used alternative drugs in Ohio having people wringing their hands about cruel and unusual punishment because a convicted killer took 25 minutes to die and made "gasping noises" instead of just becoming unconscious and losing control of his body functions like a good boy,<br /><br /><br /><blockquote><a href="http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/01/17/missouri-republican-proposes-a-bill-allowing-inmates-to-choose-death-by-firing-squad/"><b>Missouri Republican proposes a bill allowing inmates to choose ‘death by firing squad’</a></b><br /></blockquote><blockquote>Missouri State Representative Rick Brattin (R) is proposing legislation that would allow death row inmates to choose a firing squad as their means of execution.<br /><br />States have been struggling to acquire the drugs required to perform lethal injections in a manner that is neither “cruel” nor “unusual.”<br /><br />Missouri has executed two inmates in recent months using pentobarbital, but the drug comes from a compounding pharmacy in Oklahoma that isn’t licensed to do business in Missouri. Also, because the injectable form of pentobarbital is licensed to Lundbeck, the manufacturing of it by a compounding pharmacy violates the Food and Drug Administration’s regulations against producing “copycat” versions of FDA-approved drugs.<br /><br />One solution is to return to firing squads, which are a constitutionally approved means of execution. They are also, as an advocate of a similar bill in Wyoming notes, “one of the cheapest.” </blockquote><br />Since when any politician gets really concerned about what any damn thing costs these days is a mystery to me, I'll have to file this under political grandstanding.<br /><br />It wouldn't, however, surprise me one bit if it didn't pass and become law though.<br /><br />I can still remember when they shot <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Gilmore">Gary Gilmore</a> clear back in 1977 and what a fuss was made over it.<br /><br />Another option is hanging.<br />Both are legally condoned methods of execution, <a href="http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/methods-execution#authorized">there are five total.</a><br /><br />The length of new rope they have to use would still cost more than bullets though.<br /><br />It's kind of a strange twist of fate but I wound up living in the same small town in Washington state where <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westley_Allan_Dodd">Wesley Allen Dodd </a>, one of the few killers in this state who was hanged, was caught by the boyfriend of the mother who's child he tried to abduct at the Liberty Theater.<br /><br />So if firing squads are going to be making a comeback then I would expect to see more hand wringing and sniveling from the same people who are crying about lethal injection.<br /><br />Personally I would rather be shot at dawn than face the prospect of spending the rest of my days in prison but then again, I don't plan on going out and killing someone for no good reason.<br /><br />I look at Capital Punishment for murderers the same way I do for Mad Dogs.<br /><br />Kill 'em all.<br />

Invariably, they earn much less than high-paid computer programmers.</i></b></div><br />On the one hand, this is absolutely shocking. Who would have guessed that high-paid white-collar employees invariably earn more than low-paid blue-collar employees? Time hasn't shocked me this much since they declared my snowboard to be a fad in the 1980s. I believe it was doomed to go the way of the hula hoop if memory serves. Oh how I laughed over that one at the time.<br /><br /><div style="color: red;"><i>News outlets have detailed everything from the exhausting nature of warehouse work (employees can walk as much as 15 miles daily) to ambulances waiting outside a facility to collect workers who overheated because of a lack of air conditioning.</i></div><br />On the other hand, that would definitely suck (pardon my language). I've walked a lot of miles in recent years and anything over 7 miles is risking a blister or two. I can't imagine doing it every day. The thought of an ambulance waiting for me after a long shift is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_them_eat_cake">icing on the cake</a>. I can definitely empathize with the frustration.<br /><br /><i style="color: red;">Look at the Tesla factory - what's the worker to robotic arm ratio in that factory?</i> - polarbear429 (in the comments)<br /><br />And on that third hand, the more the poorest among us are paid the sooner their jobs will be replaced by automation. Talk about a lose-lose situation for the workers. There is no backup plan once the jobs are permanently gone either, other than to pretend they will all miraculously find work elsewhere. As a side note, the more Amazon and other automated online retailers sell, the less brick and mortar retailers can sell. There are potentially <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/USTRADE">15 million retail jobs</a> at stake here, and when they go they will no doubt take others with them. But no, it's just automated computers (in ever greater numbers) mining virtual bitcoins (in dwindling numbers). Put another way, it requires ever increasing streams of energy to generate fewer and fewer bitcoins. What a frickin' long-term plan of wasted effort that is (not necessarily from a miner's perspective, but for society in general).<br /><br />At least <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2010/11/gold-porn-and-instant-gratification.html">gold gives you something shiny to fondle</a> once the mining's complete. I say this as one who owned gold from 2004 to 2006. It treated me very well over that period. No complaints. No desire to buy it again though (at these prices anyway).
