December 31, 2010...where will you be?

It's not that long until December 31, 2010. A ittle over four months. What you can you accomplish in four short months? Where will you be on that day? Who will you be with? What will you be thinking?<br /><br />You can throw away these four months if that's what you want. But...on December 31, 2010, you'll be filled with regrets. You'll be wondering why? Why didn't you eat better and exercise more? Why didn't you just try harder?<br /><br />I'm starting <a href="http://theantijared.blogspot.com/">Tony's</a> Weight Loss Challenge. It's not really a contest with other people, but a challenge to yourself to really give it 100% of your effort to get to a healthier weight by December 31.<br /><br />This is just the kick I needed. I'll post my progress here each Monday to let your know how I'm doing.<br /><br />Tomorrow is  my new day one. I'm planning on the gym in the morning nad a walk at lunch. I haven't been both of those activities on the same for seal <br /><br />I also plan on breaking my bad habit of packing a gigantic lunch for work. It's all Point friendly food, but I'm eating too much.  From now on, I only pack what I can act<br /><br />Where will you be on Decmeber 31. Hating yourself or patting yourself on the back for a job well-done. I hope you're there with me ceebraing!

Why I haven't been posting very often

My posts have been few and far between these days. Last week I only posted once. That usually means something bad in the blog world. If that's what you're thinking, you're right.<br /><br />I'm kind of in a funk lately. Not exactly depressed, but not my usual happy self. I'm finding it harder and harder to even fake happiness, and usually I'm pretty good at faking happy. In fact, I'm so good at it I can usually talk myself out of a bad mood just by pretending to be happy. Lately though, it's just not that easy.<br /><br />I wonder if maybe this is depression and what if I feel like this forever. Is that what people feel like when they're clinically depressed and seek out psychiatric help and antidepressants? Okay, maybe I'm not that sad, I'm just kind of sad. I'm not happy where I am at this point of my life, on many levels, but I'm not quite ready for nut house.<br /><br />I'm reading all your blogs, but I'm not commenting. No particular reason, just that I always feel rushed and exhausted. Plus, honestly, I say the same old thing over and over. It's never really inspiring or helpful. Just the same old thing. I wish I had some worthy bits of wisdom to share, but I'm struggling myself so I don't feel anything I have to say is worthwhile. If I had the answers, I'd fix myself.<br /><br />My personal weight loss journey has come to a standstill. I'm not gaining weight, but I'm up 20 pounds from my lowest weight in the last two years (175.6 this morning). I'm not losing weight. More importantly, I'm not really trying anymore. I've become lazy, bored, and just tired of it all.<br /><br />I still exercise, but lately my heart really hasn't been into it. I'm finding it difficult to make myself get out of bed in the mornings and get to the gym. Instead of working out six or seven times a week, I've cut back to four times a week.<br /><br />I haven't been tracking my food either. I usually start out with good intentions, but about halfway through my day, I usually just give up. <br /><br />My eating isn't terrible, I'm not eating junk food unless you call the Dreyers 70 calories Pomegranate frozen juice bars junk food (and they are sort of). Other than that one thing, my food is completely healthy and wholesome, but my servings are too large. <br /><br />So what am I going to do about this situation? I honestly don't know. I'd kick my own butt if I could, but I just don't have the energy nor the desire anymore. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I need to get out of this mood I've been in. I miss the old me.<br /><br />There were a few things that made me smile this week:<br /><br />1. I tried to call Riverroad Animal Hospital on my Blackberry using my Bluetooth. I said, "Call Riverroad". The phone said, "Call rrrr-rrrr?". I thought, well, sort of sounds like Riverroad. I said "yes". Phone said "Calling rrrr-rrrr". It called Linda Mathys (my niece). Really, Linda Mathys sounds like "Riverroad"?<br /><br />2. I constantly forget to lock my cell phone when I throw it in my purse. As a result, it's always yelling at me "Say a command!". Yesterday I said, "Just shut up and turn off!". The phone said "Voice prompts off". Blessed silence. Then I had a moment of my panic because I didn't know how to turn voice prompts back on.."turn on" worked.<br /><br />3. I was sitting at my desk at work today (and yes, today is Sunday!), stepping through the same chunk of code for five freaking hours and not being able to figure out why my web service call kept failing, I literally said out loud to myself (alone in the office): "I wish I was smarter!".  Then it occurred to me to to take the web service error I was getting and search for it in Google. The first search result that came back said to check the CurrentState of the object. That was the problem! Okay, so I'm not smart, but Google is smart (thank you Larry Page and Sergey Brin!). <br /><br />4. I was listening to a new Ke$ha song on my iPod. I wanted to know the name of the song so I pressed the middle button, the iPod said "My First Kiss featuring Kah-dollar-sign-ha 303". It's obviously Ke$ha<br />30H!3. No wonder iPod is confused!<br /><br />5. Thursday was my twenty-second wedding anniversary. After work my husband met me at a restaurant for dinner. When I pulled into the parking lot he was standing there holding a dozen peach roses and the sweetest card he's ever given me. I haven't exactly been a joy to live with lately so I was surprised. It made me smile. <br /><br />I guess life isn't all black and horrible. As my mom would say, this too shall pass. :)

Without the perfect view or close proximity to good schools, a great house can sit on the market for months.<br /><br />In a job hunt, some experts say that connections are the most important influences on landing a job. Without a personal referral to pass your résumé along to a manager or who can put in a good word for you, your chances of landing a job are supposedly nonexistent. You'll hear this over and over again and advice givers will tell you to network as much as possible.<br /><br />But is it true? Sure, networking seems like a likely aid for a job hunt, but not every person landing a job these days these days can have a direct contact at the company. Statistically it seems unlikely that the only people getting job offers are those with the right connections. Job seekers have enough to worry about without panicking that their lack of connections is dooming their hunt before it begins.<br /><br />Rather than pretend to have a simple yes or no answer to this question, we asked job seekers, employers and experts to weigh in with their experiences. <br /><br />"I would say without a doubt that it's not the number of connections, it's the physical connecting that gets you hired. You don't get referred if you don't connect with someone in a way that makes them trust you enough to refer you. Moreover, even if you are referred by 10 respected people to the hiring manager, if you don't connect with her or him, you won't get hired." -- J.T. O'Donnell, founder and president of Careerealism.com<br /><br />"The last four jobs I've had I've gotten through some kind of networking-- all four through different circumstances:<br /><br />1. A friend inside the company served as a referral.<br /><br />2. A friend inside the company put my resume at the top of a 300-plus résumé pile by bypassing the recruiter and e-mailing it to the hiring manager directly (which she was able to see since she was internal and had the visibility).<br /><br />3. A mentor at the previous job put me in touch with some of her connections, one of whom worked for a company that turned out to be looking for someone.<br /><br />4. When she took a job as a managing director at a new firm, we met in person for the first time for lunch turned out she was looking to build her practice group and I was looking for new opportunities. I'm only 25, but in the three jobs I had in college and one professional job after, I got every single one of them based on my connections. In fact, I've never sat through a formal interview in my life." -- Tyler Tervooren, author of Advanced Riskology<br /><br />"Connections, or networking, is more important than ever because in this down economy there are so many applicants that employers don't have time to perform the culling and elimination processes they once did. They are also less inclined to take a chance on an employee who comes only through a traditional application process, without the endorsement of one or more valued associates or colleagues.<br /><br />Job seekers, therefore, must hone their networking circuits to get themselves connected to the right employment opportunities." -- Sandra Lamb is a career expert and the author of "How to Write It, Personal Notes"<br /><br />"No, not all people are getting their jobs via networking and connections - but that is the best way to do it. However, many people have some odd assumptions on networking:<br /><br />1. Networking is not about reaching a higher-up person -- it's about reaching the right person. That's not always the top person or big cheese.<br /><br />2. Sometimes effective networking does not involve networking in a company - it involves connecting people to recruiters and placement companies. Focusing your networking only on specific companies ignores the fact that recruiters are out there.<br /><br />3. Networking requires definite planning and effort and tools. What Happens if I Embellish My Salary History?

Both are uncomfortable subjects, so you might not always be 100 percent honest about either. (Who hasn't shaved 10 lbs off their physique or upped their salary by a few thousand dollars when hanging with their rich and skinny friends?) Most of the time, these little white lies are no big deal -- it's not like your friends are going to ask you get on a scale to verify your BMI. <br /><br />However, while telling an occasional fib in daily conversation may be a misdemeanor offense, lying about your salary history on a job application can be a serious transgression. <br /><br />"Unlike many soft skills, salaries are finite concrete numbers that can be verified through things like a W2, 1099 [or] tax return," says Paul Peterson, national talent resource manager for Grant Thornton LLP; Meaning that if you lie about your salary history on your resume, there's a good chance that your potential employer will find out. "If someone goes to extremes to embellish a salary prior to getting the job, one has to ask 'What will they embellish when they are actually performing the job?'" Peterson asks. <br /><br />Though it's true that not all employers conduct background checks or delve as deep as checking a candidate's W2 forms, salary information can easily be verified through your references -- which most employers do check.<br /><br />"Salary is one of the very few things that former employers are often willing to reveal in a reference check," says Barry Maher, author of "Filling the Glass: The Skeptic's Guide to Positive Thinking in Business." "Even if they won't give the exact amount, a question like 'If I placed his salary range with you in the area of $100,000 would I be in the ballpark?' usually yields the information."<br /><br />Bottom line? "Lying about anything as part of a job search strategy is not a good idea," says Elaine Varelas, managing partner at Keystone Partners, a recruitment firm. "Starting a relationship with a company based on false pretenses may not hurt you in the short term, but chances are you will be exposed."<br /><br />Yet what about job seekers who feel they were underpaid at their last job? Should they just continue to settle for less money than they think they're worth, just to avoid embellishing their salary history? <br /><br />Not necessarily, say our experts. There are plenty of ways to get the salary you deserve without lying on a job application. <br /><br />Here, they offer three ways to broach the subject of salary increase with a potential employer: <br /><br />1. "If you're looking to make a significant jump in salary my advice to people is to convince the potential employer why you are worth what you are seeking and, where possible, quantify that number," Peterson says. <br /><br />2. "It's perfectly acceptable to say something like 'I'm making $80,000 now. And though my present employer would certainly agree that I'm worth more, the simple fact is ...' then give the reason, [whether it be] a salary freeze, budget constraints, tough times in that industry, whatever. [Then continue with] 'Since the industry standard for someone with my skills and experience is $120,000, that's one of the reasons I'm looking to move on,'" Maher says. <br /><br />3. "When you are asked about compensation, you can say: 'I was making in the mid- $70's which included a 20 percent performance bonus which I always got, and a very comprehensive benefits package.' Then ask 'What is the compensation range for this position?' Using this technique allows you flexibility and gets the employer to share compensation data. 7 Industries in Need of Workers Now

Yet despite a national unemployment rate that hovers near double digits, there are industries that are in need of well-trained, qualified employees. <br /><br /><br />According to CareerBuilder's 2010 Mid-Year Job Forecast: <br /><br />One-in-five employers (22 percent) reported that, despite an abundant labor pool, they still have positions for which they can't find qualified candidates. <br /><br /><br />Forty-eight percent of HR managers reported that there was an area of their organization in which they lacked qualified workers. <br /><br /><br />Health-care employers were the most likely to report a skills deficit with 63 percent of HR professionals in large health-care organizations stating they have a shortage of qualified workers. <br /><br />Here are seven industries currently in need of workers, the reasons behind each, and why you might consider directing your career path toward one of these employee-hungry sectors. <br /><br />1. Skilled trade <br /><br />According to a talent shortage survey conducted by staffing firm Manpower Inc., skilled trade jobs (HVAC, electricians, plumbers, pipefitters, etc.) are 2010's hardest jobs to fill. <br /><br />Why there's a need: Many skilled trade positions fall into the "middle-skills" job category, or jobs that do not require a four-year degree, yet do require some education or training beyond high school. The shortage of qualified workers in this area has been largely attributed to a need for additional programs designed to attract high school students to the community colleges and trade school programs that train these workers. <br /><br />Why you should consider it: You can get paid while you learn. Most skilled-trade professions require training, much of which can be done during a paid apprenticeship. Skilled trades can also be a good career option for the business minded, since many skilled-trade workers are self-employed and own their own businesses.<br /><br />2. Transportation <br /><br />According to a 2010 job outlook study done by online ad research firm Borrell Associates, the transportation, warehousing and utilities industry is expected to see 31.6 percent more job openings this year than it did in 2009. In-demand jobs will include transportation analysts, transportation managers, and transportation and warehouse coordinators. <br /><br />Why there's a need: In June 2010, the U.S. manufacturing sector marked its 11th straight month of economic growth, according to the Institute for Supply Chain Management, and the sixth straight month of employment growth. An increase in manufacturing creates a domino effect that extends to both the warehouses that store manufactured products and the transportation used to distribute them. <br /><br />Why you might consider it: The barrier to entry is low. A clean driving record, a Commercial Driver's License and an age restriction are the most typical job requirements. <br /><br />3. Automotive<br /><br />Though Michigan's unemployment rate is testament to how hard the recession hit the auto industry, there could actually soon be a shortage of workers in the recovering field. The Center for Automotive Research recently reported that new jobs created in the industry may top 15,000 by the end of 2010, and could be as high as 100,000 per year from 2011 through 2013. <br /><br />Why there's a need: Nearly 228,000 workers were laid off when the industry hit its low point. Now that car companies are starting to see a rebound -- both Ford and General Motors surpassed expected sales in May -- the auto industry is looking to bring back its workforce. <br /><br />Why you should consider it: The salaries of motor vehicle manufacturing workers are high compared to other manufacturing industries. <br /><br />4. Education<br /><br />While it's true that many school districts are facing budget cuts and layoffs, there are still many areas of education where teachers are in short supply. Each year, the U.S. Department of Education puts out a list of nationwide teacher shortages, and 2010 is no different in terms of the overwhelming need for qualified educators. Areas of education most in need include special education, mathematics, bilingual teaching and foreign language. <br /><br />Why there's a need: Teacher shortages are not a new phenomena, and poor teacher retention rates and low salaries are often blamed. Troubled school districts and areas of education that attract fewer teachers have high turnover rates, leaving many schools in a constant search for new educators. Meanwhile, fewer college students are choosing teaching as a career path, due to an unappealing combination of advanced training requirements, complicated licensing procedures and low starting salaries. <br /><br />Why you should consider it: Many states are now offering alternate certification programs to entice potential career-changers into the classroom. These programs allow non-education bachelor's degree holders to work in the classroom while taking the courses necessary to complete their teaching certificates. <br /><br />5. Health care<br /><br />Though there have been reports of leveling off in health care job growth, the industry continues to have a surplus of job openings. According to a December 2009 survey by AMN Health Care Services, 95 percent of hospital CEOs agreed that there was a shortage of physicians in the U.S.; and from 2008-2018, the BLS reports that 600,000 new jobs will be created in nursing alone. Job openings also abound for workers without advanced schooling; 2010's most wanted health care workers include home health aides, x-ray technicians and nursing home workers. <br /><br />Why there's a need: In 2011, the baby boomer generation officially begins to turn 65, creating twofold implications for the health care industry. Not only will the aging U.S. population require more medical care than ever, but many of the baby boomers currently employed in health care will begin to retire, both factors that will contribute to an increasing gap between health care supply and demand. Additionally, with the passing of the Health Care Reform Bill, even more Americans will be eligible for health care in coming years, meaning that the need for providers will only continue to increase. <br /><br />Why you should consider it: Ten of today's 20 fastest-growing occupations are in health care. <br /><br />6. Engineering<br /><br />In 2008 and 2009, the Manpower Worker Shortage Survey named engineering jobs the hardest to fill. While the 2010 title has gone to Skilled Trade positions, the engineering sector is still in need of well-qualified workers.<br /><br />Why there's a need: Like health care, the engineering industry is seeing many of its workers reach retirement age. Additionally, fewer college students are graduating with engineering degrees. Adding to the need for engineers is last year's economic stimulus package, which prompted an upswing in transportation and infrastructure projects that demand the expertise of skilled engineers. <br /><br />Why you should consider it: Depending on the concentration, average salaries for engineers can average well into the six-figures. While an engineering degree is required for most positions, those with a bachelor's degree in math or science fields may also be considered for open positions. <br /><br />7. Sales and customer service<br /><br />According to CareerBuilder's Mid-Year Job Forecast, 25 percent of hiring managers surveyed said they plan to hire workers for customer service positions in the second half of 2010, while 22 percent said they'd be hiring more salespeople. <br /><br />Why there's a need: Companies are currently focused on building new client relationships and bringing in revenue, meaning that there is an increasing need for the people responsible for these functions -- customer service and sales representatives. <br /><br />Why you should consider it: Many sales and customer service jobs don't require a college degree, just a strong work ethic and ability to build great relationships. Overqualified? The Pros and Cons of Accepting a Job with Less Money or Prestige

The level of competition among job seekers has caused many professionals to consider applying for positions for which they may consider themselves overqualified. Sometimes, this approach may seem like the only way to land a job at all.<br /><br />But should you do the same? Following are some pros and cons to help you decide whether you should seek a position that may not offer the money or prestige of your former job. <br /><br />Pro: You can make a mark<br /><br />If you take a job that you may perceive as a step down from where your career had been, one thing is virtually guaranteed: You won't be overlooked. Chances are you can bring valuable perspective, new ideas or suggestions for improvement to the role because of your professional experience. As a result, you're likely to gain a higher level of visibility than you might otherwise. You might even be first in line for a promotion if the right opportunity emerges. <br /><br />Accepting a staff position when you were formerly a manager also could help you build certain aspects of your skill set that have been underdeveloped or overlooked. For instance, if you've been in a leadership role for several years, you may not have had a chance to do hands-on work in your field for some time. This could expose you to technologies or processes that have evolved since you were last in an individual-contributor role. If you go back to a management role at a later date, this experience in the trenches can be invaluable.<br /><br />Con: You might be bored<br /><br />If you accept a less challenging or demanding position than you had before, you could quickly grow bored with the job. Be sure you'll be comfortable and satisfied with less challenge and, likely, less reward. <br /><br />Also keep in mind how your previous roles may affect your relationships with managers and co-workers. You may very well have more experience or more impressive credentials than your supervisor. Are you OK with being told what to do and how to do it, even if you feel more qualified than your supervisor to make decisions? Respect the chain of command, be open to others' opinions and avoid bragging about your advanced qualifications if you want to establish solid working relationships within your team.<br /><br />Pro: You may reignite your passion<br /><br />In the middle of a busy career where you've always been focused on the next move up, a step down can give you a new perspective. "I interviewed a gentleman who looked great on paper but said two things during the interview that made me think 'really?' Clearly, I was looking for someone who would exercise tact with top-caliber people who would come into our office. Lakes, mountains and mosquitoes

Seattle broke a record on Saturday, 95 degrees! Fortunately we were up near Mt. Rainier where the it was comfortable, low 70's.<br /><br />Unfortunately the mosquitoes and flies loved the heat and were out in full force while we were hiking. I've never seen anything like it, and I'm from Alaska where the mosquito is called the state bird.<br /><br />We started off the hike at the Mowich Lake trailhead and our goal was Tolmie Peak Lookout, a fire lookout. Round-trip was only 6.5 miles and it was rated moderate. Moderate is never what I would expect it to be (somewhat easy), it's always a lot harder. <br /><br />The views were breathtaking, but when we got to Lake Eunice the mosquitoes ruined my good time. There were literally thousands of the little blood-sucking beasts. Of all the times I've hiked up near Mt. Rainier I've never been bothered by mosquitoes, yet I always carried insect repellent. In my infinite wisdom yesterday I decided to lightened my 20-pound backpack and take out the repellent. I never use it anyway so why carry it?<br /><br />Oh.my.God. I was eaten alive. Lake Eunice was beautiful, but the mosquitoes swarmed me. I was covered in bites, at least 30 on each arm. They were weird mosquitoes, very small but they left big bumps that itched like crazy. However my husband didn't get a single bite! <br /><br />Sunday morning the bites didn't itch anymore, and were just lots of tiny bumps. In Alaska the mosquitoes are huge, and they leave a bite that itches for days with huge welts. The bites still look awful, it's like I have some sort of arm and leg acne, but at least they don't itch.<br /><br />The hike was difficult, and we didn't make it all the way to Tolmie Peak. Mainly because the mosquitoes were so bad I couldn't take it anymore. I felt like I was going insane trying to keep them from biting me. Plus that last mile to Tolmie Peak was very steep, up the side of a mountain. We both agreed to head back to the trail head. <br /><br />Even though the hike was beatiful, the bugs were horrible. Besides the mosquitoes, there were swarms of small flies everywhere. We might try the hike again in late September when there aren't so many bugs.<br />  <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>My eating was good until I got home and made a Flatout pizza, which has become my new favorite food. It's mostly vegetables (red bell peppers, onions, mushrooms) with either chicken breast or turkey pepperoni and 1/4 cup 2% cheese. It makes a huge serving and it's delicious, but I haven't figured out the calories/Points yet (because I'm not sure I want to know). Then I ate four--yes four so sort of a binge--Dreyers Pomegranate frozen fruit bars (second ingredient is sugar so not exactly a health food). They're 70 calories each, but I ate four. Not a good thing.<br />  <br />Even though I burned 800 calories on our three-hour hike yesterday (only 5.5 miles round-trip but they were HARD miles), I still weighed 173.6 Sunday morning. Free National Parks Weekend

Did you know this weekend is free admission to all National Parks? We're heading out to Mt. Rainier this morning and a hike around Mowich Lake. It's a  little over an hour's drive to get there. I'm so excited! I love going to the mountains. <br /><br />Last weekend was a bust because it rained hard all weekend, we (I) decided not to hike in the rain. I've done it but it's just not very fun even with rain gear. I'm really a fair weather hiker.<br /><br />I'm hoping it's a little cooler in the park since the weather forecast for most of Western Washington is sunny and in the 90's (even Mt. Rainier at the lower altitudes is forecasting 90 degrees!). Why the f--- not?

The back side and rear windows had several smiley face stickers. In small letters on the side window were the words:<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><em>"Why the f--- not?"</em></div><br />The f- word wasn't spelled out, it was just "f---". It's embarrassing to admit this, but I didn't know what it meant. I actually said to myself, Why the <em>what</em> not? Why not <em>what</em>? <em>What</em> are they talking about?<br /><br />I'd had a bad day at work, and I had been feeling overwhelmed, stressed and just generally not in a happy mood. As I stared at the words, it finally clicked, and I started giggling, then laughing, and then thinking that was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. "Why the f---- not smile?" I wanted to thank the driver for making me laugh, it was one of those 'I needed that!' moments.<br />~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br /><strong>Back on the wagon</strong><br />I've finally returned to sanity. I'm even allowing myself to feel hunger pains again. I'm not starving myself, just eating like a person trying to lose weight on Weight Watchers. Smaller portions, weighing and measuring my food, and for the most part, tracking my food. More importantly, facing the reality that I can't eat what I want when I want it.<br /><br />My exercise has been really good this week. I've taken a spin class, an aerobics class and a strength training class, plus my regular gym workouts. I didn't like the aerobics class. It wasn't as fun as I remembered. In fact, I could barely walk the next day.<br /><br />This morning my weight was 173.4 (down from the 176.6 on Monday), so I'm feeling very hopeful I'll at least be back into the 160's again very soon. <br /><br />Giving away all my size 14 clothes was really an incentive for me to get a reality check. Since I didn't have any bigger pants to wear, it was lose some weight or be really uncomfortable in tight clothes. You would think that was an easy decision, but surprisingly, it's taken me a couple weeks to get back to doing what I should be doing. I guess I just wanted that vacation from watching what I eat to go on indefinitely.<br /><br /><strong>Women Food and God</strong><br />I've finished the book. Although it's a good book, and I agree with most of it, it's not a miracle. This week I caught the first half of Oprah's interview with the author, Geneen Roth (a re-run of a re-run). When Oprah proclaimed 'this is the miracle you've been looking for!' I just shook my head. There are no miracles when it comes to losing weight. Even Geneen says in her book, 'there are no quick fixes'.<br /><br />It's a great read and if you have food issues like me, you'll probably identify with most of it, but I don't think you'll think it's a miracle. I wish it was a miracle. I wish we could all easily follow Geneen's eating guidelines and miraculously get to our healthy weight. I think it'll help, and Geneen's ideas are solid and make sense, but the hard work is still on us. We have to create our own miracle.  <br /><br />I'm going to read through it again. There were a couple places I skimmed over because they were boring, and I was eager to get to the good parts. Maybe I missed the "miracle" part. One can always hope. :)<br /><br />Here are Geneen's Eating Guidelines, and if you were to follow them, I'm positive you'd get to your healthy weight. From page 211 (the last page) of Women Food and God by Geneen Roth.<br /><br />The Eating Guidelines<br /><br />1. Eat when you are hungry.<br />2. Eat sitting down in a calm environment. This does not include the car.<br />3. Eat without distractions. Distractions include radio, television, newspapers, books, intense or anxiety-producing conversations or music.<br />4. Eat what your body wants.<br />5. Eat until you are satisfied.<br />6. Eat (with the intention of being) in full view of others.<br />7. Eat with enjoyment, gusto and pleasure.   <----I've got this one down already!

Nevada Smith: The American Dante

Ok, I’ll admit there are some minor differences between Dante’s Divine Comedy and the 1966 movie classic, Nevada Smith. But basically Nevada Smith is a cowboy Dante for Americans.<br /><br />At about age 20 (“midway upon the journey of my life” –given the short life expectancy of an adventurer in the Wild West), Max Sand loses his parents. They are tortured, mutilated, and then murdered by 3 villains. Sand thereupon becomes “lost in the dark wood” of the myth of redemptive violence. That myth is the basic plot line of gratifying revenge. Think of The Outlaw Josey Wales, Collateral Damage, or most any action movie or TV show you have ever seen. Mythologist Joseph Campbell coined the term and Biblical Scholar Walter Wink says it is the actual religion of our culture. Drawn from ancient Sumer, it is still our dominant belief system even though it runs 180 degrees opposite to Judaism and Christianity. Max sets out to kill the malefactors but the story is about his own spiritual transformation as he becomes Nevada Smith. (Compare Man On Fire in the previous blog.)<br /><br />Just as Dante began his quest trusting in his own inadequate resources, so did Max. Just as Dante was immediately waylaid by three obstacles – a lion, a leopard, a wolf, representing envy, pride, and greed; Max falls in with 3 ne’er-do-wells who prove to be envious, proud, and greedy. They steal his gun and his horse. Thus Max, stranded in the desert, wanders forth imitating the ascetic spiritual seekers of the Near East and Russia where they are called “poustniks” or desert people.<br /><br />There in the sagebrush wilderness, Max meets his first guide – Jonas Cord, a gun merchant played by Brian Dennehy (who by the way appeared in the mini-series A Season In Purgatory.)Dante’s first guide was Virgil, a virtuous pagan who was able to help Dante along the way – but only so far. Just so, the gun merchant is not a Christian and is to some extent caught in the violence myth himself. But he has a good heart and just as important, good sense. He trains Max in the use of guns, but also in the life skills needed to do combat with viscous killers. Cord imparts what the Hebrew Scriptures call “hachma,” practical wisdom, knowing how to do the job. That is the foundation for the larger Greek version of Wisdom, “Sophia” -- regardless of what one is doing, even if it is drinking, gambling, and shooting, you need to know how to do it well. That is where Max properly begins his formation.<br /><br />Max succeeds in killing the first murderer but is injured in the process. He is taken in by the Kiowa. Max is himself half Kiowa. How this interlude fits the story is not clear to me. But I think it may be that the bad guys will consistently characterize Max’s determined quest for vengeance as typical of his Indian blood. So this part of the movie shows the Kiowa urging Max to abandon his quest to stay with them. It may be there to prevent the racist reading of the plot.<br /><br />Since the 2nd murderer is doing time in a Louisiana prison camp, located in a swamp, Max deliberately gets himself convicted of bank robbery so he can go there too. The brutal camp oddly allows conjugal visits by Cajun women who work in the nearby rice paddies. Granted, this is a stretch of credibility, but it advances the plot. Here Max meets his second guide, Pilar, a Cajun woman played by Suzanne Pleshette (deep sigh from the blogger). She helps Max and the murderer (who Max has befriended) escape in a canoe. In the swamp, Max guns down the unarmed man despite Pilar’s urgent pleas not to do this thing. It is then we know the significance of the crucifix she wears around her neck. She means it. During the escape, Pilar was bitten by a water moccasin. After the killing of murderer, she lies on the shore dying. Max wants to save her, but she will not go with him. She says he has used her to commit murder. She does not want “to die in sin looking at (his) face.” While Max is preparing the canoe to leave, Pilar dies. Her death is a judgment on Max who has lied to and manipulated her for his own violent ends. Then the righteous avenger says “I am sorry.” It is a moral moment. Remember Dante. His second guide was the Christian Beatrice whose death was the turning point in Dante’s life as the Cajun woman’s death ultimately proved to be for Max.<br /><br />That death in the swamp was a moral moment but not a definitive conversion. Dante views life as the soul’s journey toward God and Harold Robbins who wrote the novel which was the basis for this film apparently agrees. Max is touched but not yet transformed. He continues his pursuit of the last villain, Joe Fitch (Karl Malden). In the vicinity of Susanville I would guess, he falls into the hands of Fitch’s gang who drag him with their horses through a river. Darned if that baptismal imagery doesn’t keep happening at just the right spot in the story (see Man on Fire post). As he comes out of the water, and is about to be dragged to death, out of nowhere, a Franciscan priest, Fr. Zaccardi intervenes, stops the violence, and take the physically and spiritually injured Max to his home, which from the cell where Max stays appears to be a monastery though we see no other monks. Max has met his 3rd spiritual guide.<br /><br />“But wait,” you say, “Dante only had Virgil and Beatrice.” Not so. Even Beatrice could not take Dante the last leg of his journey to God. The Blessed Virgin was his final guide. Just as Mary represents Mother Church, so Mother Church was well represented by Fr. Zaccardi. He takes Max into the church building. Max has never been in a church before. He is most struck by the crucifix. Fr. Zaccardi asks if Max has ever seen that man (Jesus) before. Max says he has. He saw him on a silver chain. (Pilar’s). Fr. Zaccardi gives Max a Bible, explains the faith, and tells his own story of the murder of his own parents. Max listens but is stubbornly unpersuaded and continues in his hunt for the wicked Joe Fitch.<br /><br />By the time he meets Fitch, Max’s name is on wanted posters everywhere and Fitch knows Max Sand is after him. So Max takes the new name of Nevada Smith. The first name expresses his memory of the home he seemed to have lost. The second name shows his change from the raw material of sand (perhaps a reference to earth and humanity (“adamah” Hebrew word for humanity formed from the earth) to Smith suggesting a craftsman who forms the raw material into something of value. Eventually, he chases Fitch down and shoots him in the leg and hand, disabling him from doing further harm – but decides in that moment not to kill him. Fitch is furious and taunts Max to finish him off, calls him a weak coward. But Max will not yield to the temptation of redemptive violence. He turns away.<br /><br />We know what happened to Dante. He received the beatific vision and was “lost in wonder, love, and praise.” What will happen to Nevada Smith? Will he go back to partner with Cord, to live with the Kiowa, or to join the Franciscans? Dante took us all the way on his story of redemption, but Nevada Smith has taken us along the journey only far enough to see the decisive step of turning. Conversion is not a sudden about face. To “shuve” (turn around in Hebrew) or experience “metanoia” (same thing in Greek) is a slowing, then an arching, curving half circle that sets us off in the new direction – headed toward life instead of death.

I've finally decided the only way I'm going to get back to losing weight is to pretend like every day is the very first day I'm on Weight Watchers.<br /><br />If you've ever done Weight Watchers, you know how exciting and "almost" fun it is at the beginning. You have a set of rules to follow, and you try to follow them exactly. You're rewarded week after week with nice, healthy losses. <br /><br />Then one day, after, oh, let's say two and half years, you kind of get tired of it all. The weighing and measuring, the tracking, and all the other tedious things that are part of the Weight Watcher plan. <br /><br />The compliments stop because you've been at the same weight for months, or maybe you've even gained ten or twenty pounds. No one cares or seems to notice that you're still trying to lose weight, but you're struggling. You've lost your momentum. <br /><br />You've stop measuring your portions, so four ounces of chicken becomes seven or eight ounces. You stop trying to get in five vegetables a day, and take the five to seven vegetables or fruits to mean <strong>seven to nine</strong> <strong>fruits</strong> per day (maybe an obligatory vegetable or two). You certainly don't track your Points, because if you're honest, you don't really want to know.<br /><br />Maybe you stay away from the bad* stuff, the candy and cookies, but you eat too much of the healthy stuff. Your size 12 jeans are now snug and your thighs are starting to take over. In fact, when you look in the mirror all you see are your thighs.<br /><br />That's where I am right now. So let's just say this is my day one, not day 912 (that's approximate, but it's been about 2 1/2 years since I started). <br /><br />For today, my day one, I'm tracking my food, staying within my Points, weighing and measuring everything that goes in my mouth, and trying to follow the healthy eight guidelines. Easy peasy, right? I certainly hope so because my critical voice is driving me insane. She won't shut up about my eating, and if I could just smash her into tiny pieces, I'd be happy. <br /><br />Geneen (WFG) says to quiet The Voice, which I agree with to a point. However, I still think that internal voice serves a purpose. It really does have my best interest at heart, and it helps keep me in check, because Lord knows, someone needs to. However, these days I use a somewhat kinder, gentler voice with myself. I wasn't making any progress with the old voice.<br /><br />One other thing I have to do this week is face my Weight Watcher leader. She's been sending me cards in the mail, "Where are you?" or "We miss you!" or (and I love this one), "It's never too late to come back!". I haven't been to a meeting since June 5, when I weighed in at 162.8. I've definitely done some damage over the summer. <br /><br /><strong>What it feels like to be the fattest person in the room</strong><br /><br />Today I went to a spinning class. I've attended spinning classes before but always when I weighed less, 150 to 165. At 175 I usually feel too fat to be walking (or spinning) among the fittest people at the gym. Today I thought to hell with it, I'm going.<br /><br />I hadn't been to a spinning class in months and the instructor was new to me. She came over and talked to me before class. I could tell she thought I was a novice to spinning, but I'm not. I know how to ride a spin cycle. It's just like riding a bike, anyone can do it and it doesn't take any special talent, just endurance.<br /><br />Right before the class started I looked around the room, and yes, I was indeed the largest person in the room. I'd guess the average woman was maybe 125 pounds (skinny!), and the average man, maybe 150-160. There were about 20 people and every one of them looked like they had stepped right off the pages of a fitness magazine. Strong, muscular arms, flat abs and of course, great legs. <br /><br />I was able to keep up without too much pain (okay, a lot of pain!). In 45 minutes I burned 340 calories, and since I had warmed up for five minutes before the class, I'm counting all 45 minutes of the spinning class for 6 APs. I had also done 20 minutes of upper body strength training before the class. <br /><br />*<em> I'm pretty sure someone is going to comment that there aren't any "bad" foods. I know that's true, sort of. Most people can have these foods in their house without going crazy. My sister is like that, she always keeps ice cream, cookies and candy in her house for her grandchildren. She very rarely eats any of it. She doesn't have a weight problem. </em><br /><br /><em>I'm not one of those fortunate people like my sister. I will eat it until it's gone, every cookie, every piece of candy or every bite of the ice cream. It's a sickness I have, similar to an alcoholic, but one I can deal with it. I just can't have those foods in my house. That's why I call it "bad" food. </em>

It's official, I can get the senior discount at IHOP now...or 55 and still alive!

Today is my birthday, and I am now 55 years old. In some circles I qualify for the senior citizen discount. If you Google "is 55 a senior citizen?", this is the most popular answer (and one I personally like):<br /><br /><em>Depends on who's asking. many businesses have set 55 as the age to qualify for a senior citizens discount. This does not mean that one is actually "over the hill" so to speak but is a marketing gimmick to draw the business of baby boomers. The official age of a senior citizen of the United States is 65.</em><br /><br />I started to write a list of my accomplishments, but it's a pretty short list and I don't really feel like tooting my own horn today (not that there's much to toot about). The only one that's important to me anyway is my weight loss. Sadly, I'm not at goal today which was what I set out to do in January. <br /><br />This morning I was at 174.2 pounds (down from the 176.6 on Monday). Not great, but it could be worse (it could always be worse). I have reined in my eating somewhat, but not to the level I need to lose weight quickly. Also, because of various reasons (excuses), I only made it to the gym four times last week. <br /><br />I saw a show on TLC last night, "How I Lost 100 Pounds", which is exactly how much I need to lose. It was somewhat inspirational. They told the story of five people and how they all lost a significant amount of weight (including two with surgery--learned a lot about Lap Band--definitely not for me).<br /><br />The first couple lost their weight through Weight Watchers, although they never said "Weight Watchers" they did say they were using a Point system that counts calories, fat and fiber. Plus I saw a Weight Watchers food scale they were using (just like the one I own). <br /><br />The husband lost over 200 pounds and the wife lost 90 pounds. They reminded me of how I was in the beginning, three years ago, maybe even two years or a year ago, still very gung-ho on the weight loss path. They were diligent about weighing and measuring their food, exercising consistently, and have made it a "life change".<br /><br />I remember the excitement of losing weight, of nearing goal. Then I stagnated for some reason that I've yet to figure out. Boredom? Just plain exhaustion from the constant vigilance it requires? The hard work? Fear of reaching goal? <br /><br />That last one is just plain stupid. I have no fear of reaching goal, even though it might appear that way since I keep sabotaging myself. I don't harbor any unrealistic fantasies about reaching goal and living happily ever after. <br /><br />I've been near goal several times in the last year, hitting 151 a few times (goal is 135). It didn't make life all that much sweeter, I just felt better and my clothes fit better. I still had to go to work every day, I still struggled with food, I still had fight arguments with my  husband over stupid stuff, I still had to exercise. Life was still hard, just not as hard as it was at 240 pounds.<br /><br />Funny, I don't really know where I'm going with this post. I guess I have no point to make. Just that it's my birthday, I'm older than dirt, and I'm still struggling with my weight. At least, for today, I get to do something I love, hiking at Mt. Rainier.<br /><br />With that final note, I have to get ready, pack our rain gear (darn Pacific Northwest weather), a little food (all healthy stuff), and get the heck out of Dodge (Federal Way, WA)!<br /><br />Have a great weekend!

Being a parent of a toddler, I haven't quite experienced the "Back to School" anticipation that parents have.  But I have many friends that are parents of school-aged children and I can tell that they are aching for school to start.  The complaints I'm hearing and that I'm seeing posted on Facebook and Twitter are that they have run out of things to do with their kids.  So here are a couple of suggestions on things to do outside with your kids for the few remaining weeks of summer:<br /><ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicB08LWgqc7643y46UqLVGdXRtajdmPj2yi4wL8TxzWszDo6vlaEL2YbGebyHuOAf3l7smPrnuwIjxiZN8BbxIaFywT4RrkRP3VSRXWyUyRwLigiAxm8vF0G1a-mjA3lD3Mkcw4N5YCFtQ/s1600/lightning-bugs1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" bx="true" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicB08LWgqc7643y46UqLVGdXRtajdmPj2yi4wL8TxzWszDo6vlaEL2YbGebyHuOAf3l7smPrnuwIjxiZN8BbxIaFywT4RrkRP3VSRXWyUyRwLigiAxm8vF0G1a-mjA3lD3Mkcw4N5YCFtQ/s200/lightning-bugs1.jpg" width="138" /></a></div><li>Make a bug terrarium!  A small glass aquarium with a screen lid can be purchased fairly cheaply from pet stores and larger retail stores.  Small butter tubs with holes in the lids can be used to collect bugs found outside.  Place sticks with leaves, some soil and grass in the tank and go on a bug safari.  You can do this at different times of the day to see what different kinds of bugs are out.  An after-breakfast bug hunt will yield very different finds than an after-dinner hunt.  Beetles, worms, lighting bugs, sow bugs (rollie polies), cicadas, grasshoppers, all make great residents for your terrarium.  Just be sure to let them go after a day or so.</li><li>Take a hike!  There are lots of city, metro and state parks in Ohio that provide great views and new challenges if you want to burn some of your kids' energy off for a day.  Take a backpack with some water, bug spray, sunscreen, and some snacks for a short hike.  You'll find lots to see and do and you'll be amazed at how fast the day passes.  And it's free!</li><li>Catch a fish!  Kids under 16 fish for free! Larger retail stores have beginner fishing kits that include the rods, reels, line and tackle already geared up and fairly cheap.  For more beginning fishing tips, check out the Ohio Division of Wildlife's <a href="http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/FishingSubhomePage/how_to_fishplaceholder/How_to_Fish_default/tabid/6497/Default.aspx">"New to Fishing?"</a> page for more information and suggestions.  And take lots of pictures!! Before you know it, they'll be back in school and you'll be finding that you actually miss them....maybe? ;-)
