AP uses sledge hammer on reporter Bob Lewis - UPDATED

The news heard 'round the internet on Monday was long-time Richmond-based reporter Bob Lewis' firing by the Associated Press. Social media lit up as supporters from all sides of the political aisle expressed shock that his earlier suspension had turned into a pink slip as he was booted out the AP door.<br /><br />The entire episode began two weeks earlier, as reported by Andrew Cain with the <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/news/latest-news/ap-fires-reporter-editor-over-mcauliffe-error/article_f6124b90-3a97-11e3-be61-001a4bcf6878.html"><i>Richmond Times-Dispatch</i></a>:<br /><blockquote>AP erroneously reported the evening of Oct. 9 that documents in a federal fraud case in Rhode Island alleged that McAuliffe “lied to a federal official” investigating Joseph Caramadre, a Rhode Island estate planner who is accused of defrauding terminally ill people.<br /><br />In a bulletin that night killing the story about 90 minutes after it was first posted, AP said “the indictment did not identify McAuliffe as the ‘T.M.’ who allegedly lied to investigators.”</blockquote>To hear the AP retract a story sent a shiver throughout the news world. To have the questioned article be authored by Bob Lewis was even more stunning after his 28 years with the AP.<br /><br />It certainly has caused a stir in Virginia's political atmosphere. From the <i>RTD:</i> <br /><blockquote>Lewis and Potter “have always been fair, tough and smart. Virginians deserve dedicated reporters like them,” Gov. Bob McDonnell tweeted.<br /><br />Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling tweeted: “Sorry to see the AP fire Bob Lewis. Bob is one of the most respected reporters in Richmond. We all make mistakes. Bob did not deserve this.”<br /><br />Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., tweeted: “AP’s Bob Lewis has been a fixture at the Va Capitol and his reporting will be missed by Virginians. Best wishes at a tough moment, Bob.”<br /><br />Sen. Timothy M. Kaine, D-Va. tweeted: “Big loss for Virginia. @APBobLewis is an even-handed, talented reporter & a class act.”</blockquote>As many question whether Lewis' firing was overreaction by AP, former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore took to Facebook to advocate on Lewis' behalf Monday, writing, "<span class="userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">I add  my voice calling for the AP to reinstate Bob Lewis and Dena Potter.   Bob Lewis is 'Mr. AP.'  They made a mistake but corrected it  immediately. What if they fired every reporter who made a mistake?  I  got a list."</span><br /><br />Wherever he goes, Bob Lewis will have a built-in audience of those who have followed -- and respected -- his work for years. Count me as one of them.<br /><br /><b>Update:</b>  The reaction from Lowell at <a href="http://www.bluevirginia.us/diary/10462/negative-reaction-pours-in-to-aps-firing-of-bob-lewis-dean-of-the-virginia-political-press-corps">Blue Virginia</a> and the Richmond Democrat, er, <a href="http://www.the-richmonder.com/2013/10/the-aps-dismissal-of-bob-lewis-is.html">The Richmonder</a>, confirms that reactions to Bob Lewis' firing are bipartisan even among bloggers, a good reflection of a good reporter.<br /><br /><b>Update #2:</b> The <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/news/state-regional/government-politics/ap-fires-third-staffer-over-mcauliffe-error-guild-files-grievances/article_947ae2be-2e60-5556-a959-e1528335ca0d.html"><i>Richmond Times-Dispatch</i></a> reports that a third person has been fired by the AP even as the News Media Guild has filed grievances on behalf of Lewis and his colleagues.

The Charlotte Observer also has <a href="http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/10/22/4407782/elevation-pastor-building-big.html#.Ume2GhCjQYI" target="_blank">posted an article about Furtick</a>. Looks like Satan is busy attacking Steven there in Charlotte. Perhaps even two helicopters were flown over Stevens <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2013/10/furticks-pre-emptive-move-tells-church.html" target="_blank">"not so great of a house"</a>.<br /><br />Watch it. It is fair. Lack of Transparency: Watson points out that the church will not give out exact numbers on the sums of money involved in the book deal. How much were the advances, how much did the publisher pay Elevation for the promotions, how much did Furtick donate? Furtick's salary? All top secret, always will be. They have to be. If the numbers were known, it would hurt giving. An easy decision for the church. Total secrecy. I've written about this numerous times, including <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2010/09/cowardice-of-preachers-lack-of-openness.html" target="_blank">here</a>. <br /><br />2.  Cult of Personality: Furtick is a rockstar. Watson makes that clear. Furtick IS the brand. That is the model of the modern mega or giga church. People want their pastor to be famous. They want him to be "edgy", a bit controversial, and even <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2011/03/crybaby-pastors-part-3-steven-furtick.html" target="_blank">confrontational</a>. He has to be these things because after all, a pastor is fighting Beelzebub himself and is in the business of saving souls.  Ed Stetzer warned about the <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2009/10/ed-stetzer-on-leadership.html" target="_blank">cult of personality back in 2009</a>. Furtick is a classic example of this phenomena. Megachurches are More "Business" and Less "Church": As Watson shows how money flows back and forth between book publisher, Furtick, and the church, and the church members have no clue about the amounts - we see the cold hard truth. Elevation and others like it are just big businesses who operate as tax-exempt 501(c)3 religious organizations. But they want their followers to think it is the "church of the living God" - and thus they are obligated to support it with the first 10% of their income. <br /><br />5. Manipulative Methods for Raising Revenue: What the untold story is HOW Elevation raises money. Their financial strategy is to tell members they are cursed by God (or devoured by the devil) unless they give 10% of their income. <a href="http://elevationchurch.org/sermons/banneryears/part3" target="_blank">Furtick has had Robert Morris in to shake down the congregation</a>. <br /><br />And tomorrow night Stuart Watson will present the 2nd part: who the men are that decide Furtick's salary. They are other mega church pastors, not the members, not elders or trustees elected by the members.<br /><br />So glad men like Stuart Watson are letting their light shine where it needs to be shone.

You realise how committed lawyers are to giving people a decent defence because he was in the middle of a case where media reports would have you believe that we should throw away the key, but his commitment to his client stopped me in my tracks and I ended up thinking, 'This is a miscarriage of justice.' Before I jump in on Week 4 progress, I want to thank everyone for your sweet comments on the <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2013/10/im-in-hgtv-magazine-lets-celebrate-with.html" target="_blank">HGTV Magazine feature</a>. It wasn't totally real until I could share it with y'all and I'm still on cloud nine. Actually I'm kind of hoping that euphoria will carry me through the next few weeks because I feel like this project is growing. The list should be getting smaller at this point right? My design ADD is killing me. (catch up on previous weeks <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/p/one-room-challenge.html" target="_blank">here</a>.)<br /><br />Now that the painting is done and I'm ready to get going on the meat and potatoes of the room I wanted to take this week to share some details on what will be sitting on those newly painted floors.<br /><br />If you are new to LBD then I should let you know; I like a good bargain. And I love things that have a story to tell. I found this beauty at Goodwill and loved it right away. Then the 'do I or don't I' debate started and I decided I would walk away and check back tomorrow. If it was still there it was meant to be. I thought about it all night and couldn't wait for the store to open the next morning. I rushed in and paid the $30. That's right. $30. I picked it up the next day in a surprise (and severe) snow storm with it hanging out of the back of my car for the 2 miles home. My friend and I go to an annual high school garage sale every spring and we usually come away with something great. The lines are long, we have to go super early and it is pure madness when we get in. We love it. This past spring we went and came up with a big fat nothing until we headed toward the exits. I saw these chairs and said to her that I had no more room for armchairs in my house (I have 4 extras in my basement), but don't they have great lines? And then she said the best thing a friend could say - "They are $8. Get them!" (thanks Becca). And so I did. They won't look like this the next time you see them, but they are again in excellent condition and I love their shape. She assured me I could find some way to paint over that veneer and I pulled the trigger. $20. Snatched it up while at a retirement home sale with a client (they had great stuff). My <strike>monkeys</strike> girls' broke the glass top during an illegal dance party so it needs to be fixed and spruced up. Some of them have already been made over, some are still in process and some I still need to start (ugh!). The primary tasks for this position include the development / improvement of pattern recognition system, alignment system, stage map, analyzing the trace logs to improve MTBI/MTBF, and MAM/TPUT.<span style="color: #1f497d;"> </span>Other responsibilities for this position include interfacing with multi-disciplinary teams in the US and overseas.<br /><br />This position may require less than 25% oversea/domestic travel to the customer sites.<br /><br /><b>Preferred Qualifications:</b>Candidate should have doctoral degree in physics/applied sciences/ materials sciences with at least 5-10 years of experience. Experience in the semiconductor industry and in other film/CD measurements would be a plus. Candidates should have excellent written and oral communication skills. Candidates should be familiar with analytical tools such as Matlab, Mathematica.
