When <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/05/low-wage-strikes-starting-to-yield.html" rel="nofollow">unions help improve conditions for low-wage workers</a> through sudden one-day strikes at retail stores, fast-food restaurants, warehouses and the <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/LA-port-drivers-strike-electrifies-workers.html" rel="nofollow">ports</a>, that's alt-labor.<br /><br />Today, the <a href="http://www.teamster.org/content/washington-taxi-drivers-form-association-teamsters-union" rel="nofollow">Teamsters announced</a> the formation of the Washington, D.C., Taxi Operators Association. Here's what the press statement said:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Cab drivers in the nation’s capital are joining together with the Teamsters Union to announce the formation of the new Washington, D.C. Taxi Operators Association. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">The association is being created to give the more than 6,000 taxi cab drivers in Washington, who are independent owner- or lease-operators, a united, collective voice for positive change in their industry. The association will be affiliated with Teamsters Local 922 in Washington. The first meeting will be held Oct. 29. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">“For far too long, taxi drivers in Washington, D.C., have not had a strong voice to provide input about regulations and policies that affect their livelihoods,” said Ferline Buie, President of Teamsters Local 922. “Their new association with Teamsters Local 922 will give them the strong voice they need and deserve.” </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">The drivers approached the Teamsters because they need to have input on regulations before they take effect. Up until the release of Mandisa's "Overcomer" at least one from the duo of Carrie Underwood and Phillip Phillips have been in the Top 100, and on the first week they both fell out of the top 100, "Overcomer" was still at #92 to represent the Idols. However, <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/billboard-chart-date-110213.htm" target="_blank">this week on the album chart</a> with Carrie's "Blown Away" at #158 and Phillip's "The World From the Side of the Moon" at #142, "Overcomer" has stayed steady at #111 on its eighth week (from #112 last week), so the lone Idol in the Top 100 is the brand new one, Scotty McCreery's "See You Tonight" at #6 (#1 Country) with sales of 52,000. Scotty's debut sales are the best Idol album sales since Fantasia's release of "Side Effects of You" back in May (where she sold 91K first week and landed at #2).<br /><br />I am certain Scotty's album will stay in the Top 100 for several weeks, and when Kelly Clarkson's "Wrapped in Red" album is released next week he will have more American Idol company at the top of the charts, followed by Kellie Pickler and Daughtry's releases in November ("The Woman I Am" on Nov 11 and "Baptized" on Nov 19). Phillip even has his live EP released on the Nov 19 so he should see another jump in sales too. There should be American Idols everywhere on the charts this holiday season.<br /><br />Another interesting thing I noticed before watching the Cardinals sloppily lose to the Red Sox last night, was that Mary J. Blige sang the National Anthem. Why is that noteworthy on an American Idol blog? Well, last year it was <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/phillip-phillips-national-anthem-game-1-world-series-2012-video.htm" target="_blank">Phillip Phillips</a> and the year before then it was <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/scotty-mccreery-sings-the-national-anthem-at-world-series-game-1.htm" target="_blank">Scotty McCreery</a> who sang the anthem at Game 1. Was Mary J. Blige the stand in for Candice Glover since "Music Speaks" was never released earlier this month? I suppose Candice did sing it at the <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/candice-glover-national-anthem-mlb-all-star-game-2013-video.htm" target="_blank">MLB All Star game</a> in July, but that is not the same size audience as the World Series.

What to Make of "What Starbucks Gets that Architects Don’t"

This week architects have been busy <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/440358/why-i-left-the-architecture-profession/">reading</a> and <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/84452042/what-starbucks-gets-that-architects-don-t">commenting on</a> Christine Outram's <a href="https://medium.com/what-i-learned-building/a844ec3343da">essay at Medium</a>, "What Starbucks Gets that Architects Don't: Or why I left the architecture profession." On my first read a couple days ago I got the message (architects need to listen to the people who occupy their buildings) and agreed generally that buildings and spaces could be designed better, although I detested the way it was written and didn't find that round tables at Starbucks to be a strong argument for architects talking to and listening to people. <br /><br /><a href="https://medium.com/what-i-learned-building/a844ec3343da"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvjFcgEgwFj7kJC9YIzxyMRIqq6IN2Vz1RLqbY0lMg8ZL9zOC-RtJx_EJCkaYQ55b-SSozEvZksbFHFQs2WE6Q6RFbYUccWLaIsXcuqstJQdqTgxhZ9PayVjsfc64C8NLp1o8jjQ3FgXAE/s1600/Starbucks-Medium.jpg" /></a><br /><br />To make just one comment on her article in this blog post, it's worth focusing on what I think is the gist of her argument:<br /><blockquote>"You [architects] don’t understand people. I correct myself. You don’t listen to people."</blockquote>These sentences come right at the beginning of her piece, setting up her argument about Starbucks ("Form follows feeling") and using the Internet to poll people about things like where a new shop should really be located (something usually outside an architect's scope). But what if her statements are incorrect? I correct myself. What if there is a more accurate criticism about architects?:<br /><blockquote><i>You [architects] are people, but you don't listen to yourselves, to what's inside.</i></blockquote>This statement may sound a bit goody-goody or mushy at first, but my point is that by focusing on users as a distinct group of people—them, not us—former-architect Outram is perpetuating the gulf between the two. Actually, I'd argue that architects are also Starbucks customers (and homeowners, and students, and the other people that use buildings), and given their education and practical experience they are in a unique position to gauge how design can make one's cup of coffee in a chain cafe a better experience, to use her example.<br /><br />Is it necessary to poll hundreds of coffee drinkers to determine that round tables "protect self-esteem for those...flying solo"? Or could an architect have come to the same determination by believing their impression that round tables work better in some environments than square tables, be it by observing patrons at a local cafe or in a public park, or by choosing a round table over a square one themselves? Any architect will admit that all of their observations and experiences influence how they think about architecture, so I'm wont to believe the latter.<br /><br />So then why don't architects listen to what's inside? The obvious conclusion would be to blame clients—after all, they are the entities that sit in that supposed gulf between architects and users. Yet the case of Starbucks shows (if anything) that clients are open to design solutions when they lead to benefits both for them and whom they serve; and to make a fairly safe assumption, a developer should be open to design solutions that make residents happier so they can ask for higher rents or selling prices.<br /><br />But traditionally the client's bottom line has driven decision-making, therefore conditioning architects to prioritize that over human needs. Therefore I'd wager that architects don't listen to what's inside because they're afraid of ignoring what they see as the client's wishes or of even losing the job. Yet ultimately the architect exists to balance human needs (the users, as filtered through the architect's own experiences and expertise) with those of the client, as well as with the environment and other considerations that are greater than both.<br /><br />So I believe that architects <i>do</i> listen to people, internalizing conversations and experiences so as to make better decisions about design. Often they don't follow through on those feelings and therein lies some of what Outram is getting at. I don't believe architects need to carry out online polls or data mine (what people in advertising, Outram's current gig, do) to create buildings and spaces that are in line with how people want to feel. Architects can interpret such data if it exists, but not at the expense of understanding themselves and the shared human condition.

For Elliot the whole experience has felt somewhat unreal. Ironically that is the political front of the Heritage Foundation, the  leading GOP think tank that is credited by some architects of Obamacare  as the initial inspiration of their health care program. The difference  is that whereas the Heritage Foundation was pushing a mild health care  reform based on increased profit for private insurers, as in the plan  Mitt Romney introduced in Massachusetts, the Republicans object to the  provisions in this president’s program that broaden access for the  needy.</b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>They were abetted in this decision by a Supreme Court ruling last  year granting the states the option of not expanding Medicaid to cover  the uninsured under the new act. As a consequence, 8 million of our  fellow Americans with annual incomes of less than $19,530 for a family  of three have been prevented from obtaining the health care coverage  that we as a nation decided to grant them.</b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>It might seem odd for governors to reject a program to help those living  in their state that is fully funded by the federal government for the  first few years and then 90 percent covered by the feds thereafter. But  turning down a federal program to aid your own state’s population makes  perfect sense when connected with the racist appeal initiated by Nixon  that has turned the once Democratic South into a rock solid Republican  bastion. There are certainly many whites among the 435,000 cashiers,  341,000 cooks and 253,000 nurses aides who the Times estimated will be  denied needed health care in the states controlled by Republican  governors who have decided to veto the most important provision of the  Affordable Care Act. </b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>In the end, this is a replay of the civil rights drama that gripped  the nation more than half a century ago, but back then the Republican  Party, following the enlightened leadership of Dwight Eisenhower, was on  the humanitarian side of the equation. Now the elected leaders of a  party that has been on the side of emancipation since the presidency of  Abraham Lincoln acts to deny the basic human right to life-sustaining  health care to the Southern progeny of slaves. As the Times study noted:  “In all, 6 out of 10 blacks live in the states not expanding Medicaid.  In Mississippi, 56 percent of all poor and uninsured adults are black,  though they account for just 38 percent of the population.”</b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>But that also means that almost 44 percent of the poor and uninsured  in Mississippi are white, and the gutting of this program that hurts  them is evidence of the false consciousness that informs racist appeals.  As the Times points out, someone, black or white, making $11,000 a year  frying chicken in a convenience store falls into the gap of making too  much to qualify for the state’s existing Medicaid program but not enough  to be subsidized under the new health care plan as the state defines  it. For those who lose out, there’s what the Republican die-hards call  tough love. That’s not love. It’s hate. </b></span></span>

Job Summary: The Library Technician IV works under the direction of the  University Librarian to perform support duties across multiple  functions, including interlibrary loan, circulation, technical  processing, serials, instruction, shelf maintenance, etc. Responsible  for learning advanced procedures as Library increases electronic  services and resources. Duties and Responsibilities: Assist patrons in use of Library  resources and services and software on Library computers. Assist patrons  printing, scanning, copying or needing Projectors/TVs/VCRs. Maintain  Room Scheduling Calendar and manage Room Use/Policies daily. Train and  Coordinate activities of student workers. Check In and Check Out of  Library Resources. Assist patrons with Renewals, Process overdues, late  fine and fee resolution and communicate all changes of system fees with  University Librarian and other Library staff. Utilize all relevant functions in ExLibris Library  system, including Voyager Acquisitions, Circulation, and Web Voyage,  Metalib, SFX, and Primo. Process patron requests for interlibrary loan  when needed. Participate in developing new, more efficient workflow and  policies. Participate in staff meetings representing student issues.  Communicate patron requests and complaints to University Librarian.  Shelve and straighten materials, shifting when necessary. Create written  procedures when requested. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.  Qualifications: 2 years of college and 2 years appropriate experience in  a Library. Excellent keyboarding skills; demonstrated basic knowledge  of Excel, Word, and Outlook. Demonstrated mastery of basic computer  operations, including internet navigation skills. Ability to work with  minimal supervision. Ability to make steady progress on large tasks  weekly. Attention to detail; production of high quality, accurate work.  Demonstrated ability to work in teams, be flexible and acquire new  skills independently. Must be able to lift 30 pounds and work around  dust and mold. Strong service orientation.
