Corporate takeover of social services rips off states, starves families

No, not the kind that John Boehner and right-wing extremists want to talk about. Rather, the money government is spending to outsource essential social services, paying inflated costs for inefficient corporate management. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;">Our friends at the <a href="http://www.prwatch.org/" rel="nofollow">Center for Media and Democracy</a> have a <a href="http://www.prwatch.org/news/2013/10/12264/profiting-poor-outsourcing-social-services-puts-most-vulnerable-risk">new report</a> on the corporate frenzy to defraud state and local governments and deny services to vulnerable communities -- all to collect huge profits:</span><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">As private corporations like ACS and Maximus rake in hundreds of millions of dollars in massive contracts, and their executives rake in colossal compensation packages, shareholder profits and warped incentives detract from the standards of care provided by these corporations. </blockquote>The CMD report looks at a <a href="http://blog.gulflive.com/mississippi-press-news/2013/04/mississippi_lawmakers_give_fin.html" rel="nofollow">recent bill passed in Mississippi</a> allowing the state's Department of Health Services to privatize government functions such as child protective services and food programs for senior citizens.<br /><br />Mississippi tried this before: it previously hired outside firm <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Maximus" rel="nofollow">Maximus, Inc.</a> to collect overdue child support payments. Maximus charged higher costs while collecting less than the state did in child support payments, according to CMD.<br /><br />So maybe it's just a problem in Mississippi? Definitely not:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">The <em><a href="http://extras.denverpost.com/news/foster0521a.htm" target="_blank">Denver Post</a></em> found a shocking pattern of abuse when it conducted an in-depth investigation of the privatization of Colorado’s foster care system a decade ago. The Post reported that numerous children were molested, abused, and even died in foster homes after the state started contracting with businesses that failed to ensure they were placed in safe homes. The state also paid three times as much to place a child in private foster care as it did in homes that were supervised by the counties.  </blockquote><a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/ACS" rel="nofollow">Affiliated Computer Services (ACS)</a>, another private firm, won a $1.16 billion contract from the state of Indiana in 2006. By 2008 there was a huge jump in the number of families and senior citizens incorrectly denied food stamps and Medicaid. <br /><br />But these errors, as devastating as they are, weren't simply the result of computer glitches. Instead, they are built into the for-profit framework of corporate-run social services:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Many question whether these services -- aimed at helping the elderly, single parents, and foster children -- should ever be delivered with a profit motive. As Bob Jacobson of the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families put it, "If you’re a corporation whose very mission is to increase shareholder value, that is automatically in conflict with a social service agency whose sole purpose is to meet the needs of people in the program."</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Jacobson noted that in the early days of privatizing social services in Wisconsin, contracts with Maximus and others were set up in such a way that "the profit motive was built in to deny benefits." That is, whatever money Maximus saved the government by not enrolling eligible individuals, it got to keep. "There was all sorts of money being siphoned off to build big houses for CEOs and it was perfectly legal."  </blockquote>Despite its reputation of billing the state of Wisconsin for questionable expenses related to its privatized welfare-to-work program, <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110519005027/en/MAXIMUS-Awarded-21-Million-Child-Welfare-Contract" rel="nofollow">Maximus won another $21 million bid</a> in 2011 to management the state's foster care services for the next five years.<br /><br />Earlier this year, the state of California's $69 million contract with ACS failed <a href="http://www.ocregister.com/taxdollars/strong-479003-href-http.html" rel="nofollow">37,000 people whose food stamp benefits disappeared</a>. <br /><br />And it isn't just state governments being swindled by private companies to prey on vulnerable families. CMD reports that Maximus just won a contract with the Department of Education to process federal student loan payments -- and it could run taxpayers as much as $848.4 million!<br /><br />It's no surprise then that Maximus's CEO took home $4 million last year and his company made over a billion in revenue. ACS's parent company, Xerox, made $22.3 billion last year and has awarded top executives over $120 million since 2008. <br /><br />Maybe that wouldn't be so bad if either company actually provided reliable services in exchange for the contracts they get from taxpayers. But that's the point: public services and private profits just don't mix.<br /><br />So the next time tea party radicals tell you we have a spending problem, tell them to blame privatization and corporate greed. <br /><br />It's not just robbing taxpayers -- it's killing the poor.

Jackie pleaded with Rose not to return to the Doctor and go on further adventures with him, but this had no effect on Rose's decision to keep travelling with the Doctor. Rose did however stay in touch with her Mum, the Doctor upgraded her mobile so that she could call her from any time or place and she returned home on frequent visits.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white;">Rose pleaded with the Doctor to take her back to 1987 (Father's Day) as she wanted to be with her father when he died. He did as Rose asked but she couldn't resist saving Pete's life and created a wound in time which let in the Reapers, which rampaged across the planet until Pete sacrificed himself for the sake of saving the world.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white;">Later when Rose travelled to a parallell  universe (Rise Of The Cybermen / The Age Of Steel) she discovered an Earth where Pete was still alive and had become a successful business man - she however had never been born and, much to the Doctor's amusement,  her mother Jackie doted upon a small dog named Rose instead. It was only after Jackie had been converted into a Cyberform that Rose revealed her true identity to Peter but he was confused by her claims and shunned her.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white;">Rose was to meet with this version of Pete again when the 'Pete's world' Cybermen  attacked Rose's Earth. Unaware of it's true nature, Rose has initially felt sympathy for the imprisoned creature and had inadvertently allowed it to absorb her DNA, enabling it to regenerate. As the Dalek killed the inhabitants of the base, Rose used her connection to the Dalek to end the slaughter, ordering it to commit suicide in the process.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white;">Some time later, the TARDIS crew, were transported onto the Game Station in the year 200,100, shortly before it came under attack from a huge Dalek fleet. The Doctor sent Rose home in the TARDIS, condemning himself to death alone. Desperate to return to his side, Rose forced open the ship's console hoping to communicate with the heart of the TARDIS. Instead she absorbed the Time Vortex itself, granting her mastery over the whole of time and space and allowing her to return to the Game Station. Here she confronted the Dalek Emperor and divided it's fleet into atoms. The power though was killing Rose and the Doctor absorbed it from her, with a kiss, sacrificing his own life to save her from a certain death.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white;">This was the first time that Rose 'lost' the Doctor - the Vortex energy triggered his regeneration and Rose found herself with an apparent stranger. Rose made the decision not to accompany her family in to 'Pete's World' and chose the Doctor over them.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white;">As Rose helped the Doctor to activate the Levers that opened the breach and sucked the Daleks and the Cybermen into the Void, she slipped and fell towards the opening, but she was saved by Pete Tyler. She was transported to 'Pete's World', where she joined Jackie and Mickey. Rose now had her whole family around her, with Pete and Jackie reunited and expecting a new baby. But the the breach was closed and she could never see the Doctor again. Rose was inconsolable and sobbed uncontrollably. It became clear that Rose was madly in love with the Doctor and she was beyond heartbroken at being parted from him.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white;">Sometime later Rose began to hear the Doctor's voice calling her. She told her family and they all followed the voice to Bad Wolf Bay in Norway where a projection of the Doctor appeared, <span style="line-height: 19.1875px;">he was harnessing the power of a supernova to transmit through one of the final breaches.</span></span><br /><span style="line-height: 19.1875px;"><span style="background-color: white;">Because the breach was to close permanently in two minutes, the pair share one last but very brief conversation. Rose broke down as she confessed to the Doctor that she loved him, but just as the Doctor starts to reply, the breach closed and he was gone from her life forever. She attempted to make contact with the Doctor first via the scanners in the TARDIS (The Poison Sky) and then on Midnight, via Crusader 50's video screen, but he didn't notice her and the signal wasn't strong enough to allow audible contact. After helping defeat the Daleks, the Doctor returned Rose and her mum Jackie to Pete and her new brother Tony on 'Pete's World' - but he left behind a part human Doctor, created by his regeneration energy mixed with Donna's human DNA. This Doctor could confess that he loved Rose, and the two began a new life together - the Doctor and Rose were together at last. Organizing is in the blood of this Teamster family

As a <a href="http://www.teamster.org/content/organizing-victories" rel="nofollow">Teamster organizer</a> and a <a href="http://driveupstandards.org/durham-school-bus-workers-forum" rel="nofollow">Durham School Services school bus driver</a>, Shelley Goodman witnessed a lot of hardship in 21 years. She worked to alleviate it -- and to pass that torch to a new generation.<br /><br />Goodman saw what happened to school bus drivers without a union. One school bus monitor sold her blood to make ends meet in Jacksonville, Fla. Goodman met her on an organizing drive.<br /><br />A worker who had terminal cancer came to cast his vote in the Teamster election in Minnesota, so committed was he to a better future for his coworkers.<br /><br />“I’ve witnessed all these battles,” Goodman told the audience of 1,000 Teamsters at the recent<a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/09/teamster-womens-conference.html" rel="nofollow"> 2013 Teamsters Women’s Conference</a>. “But there are two women who I would like to recognize today. They encouraged me to be an activist. They are my two daughters.”<br /><br />The two sisters have the same fire as their mother to empower workers to better their working conditions and their lives.<br /><br />Goodman said she is extremely proud of her daughters as she called on the audience of Teamsters to continue their fight and pass it on to the next generation.<br /><br />Courtney Goodman Bell is a business agent with Local 777 in Chicago. Kacie Goodman Romero is a special education teacher in Louisiana and a chief shop steward working to organize and mobilize her coworkers.<br /><br />Romero is learning from her mother and sister about empowering workers to stand up for their rights.<br /><br />“I’m glad to be at the Teamsters Women’s Conference," Romero said. "Having moved from Illinois to Louisiana, a <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/04/how-to-talk-about-right-to-work.html" rel="nofollow">right-to-work</a> state, I have a lot to learn about organizing and unions. I want to empower myself to help others.<br /><br />Romero is one of five union members among a work force of 80. The teachers and staff have a growing interest in organizing, but also a fear of retribution from their employer.<br /><br />Romero remembers workers coming to their house to talk to their mom, the fighter, she told the<a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/09/teamster-womens-conference.html" rel="nofollow"> Teamster</a> women at the conference. “Mom would go to her shop steward meetings and bring us along when we were little,” Romero said.<br /><br />Bell said being in a union is ingrained in their family.<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Our father was a union ironworker. When I was eight years old, Mom organized at her bus terminal. For us, it was common conversation at the dinner table.</blockquote>Bell is the youngest daughter, but advises her sister on how to organize in her workplace.<br /><br />“I’m a business agent and I represent school bus drivers, and I can explain to them, I rode a bus, too, with my Mom. I know the gratification and challenges of being a bus driver,” Bell said.

Blocked vein theory of MS debunked again | Metro

TORONTO – A long-awaited Canadian study has found that narrowed neck veins are as common in healthy people as those with multiple sclerosis, sounding what's being called the "death knell" of the theory that blocked blood vessels may cause the debilitating neurological disease.<br /><br><br /><br>The study, published Tuesday in The Lancet, is the latest to question the validity of a controversial theory put forth in 2009 by Dr. Paolo Zamboni that MS is related to narrowed neck veins, which prevent blood from properly draining from the brain.<br /><br><br /><br>The Italian vascular surgeon named the condition "chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency," or CCSVI. He suggested iron deposits from backed-up blood cause the lesions in the brain that are the hallmarks of MS. The disease causes inflammation that destroys the myelin sheath around nerves, leading to widespread disability.<br /><br><br /><br>Zamboni said patients treated with a procedure to open up their neck veins — called balloon venoplasty — saw a significant reduction in symptoms.<br /><br><br /><br>News of Zamboni's "liberation therapy," generated through traditional and social media, sent thousands of MS patients from Canada and elsewhere to private clinics around the world, where they spent thousands of dollars each for the unproven treatment.<br /><br><br /><br>In the Lancet study, researchers at the universities of British Columbia and Saskatchewan found CCSVI was a rare phenomenon: out of 177 MS patients, unaffected siblings and healthy volunteers, only one in each group was found to have CCSVI as defined by Zamboni.<br /><br><br /><br>"And this was a big surprise to all of us," said Dr. Anthony Traboulsee, medical director of the UBC Hospital MS Clinic, who headed the study. "We were really expecting to find many more people with this feature."<br /><br><br /><br>What they did find, however, was that at least two-thirds in each group — so both those with MS and those without MS — had a 50 per cent or greater narrowing in a jugular or other neck vein.<br /><br><br /><br>Among 79 subjects with MS, 74 per cent had neck vein narrowing, while the same was true for 66 per cent of 55 unaffected siblings and 70 per cent of the 43 healthy volunteers.<br /><br><br /><br>"So there weren't really any significant differences between the three groups," said Traboulsee, noting that the study was done with catheter venography, considered the gold standard for radiologists to view the inside of veins — and the one Zamboni used, along with ultrasound imaging.<br /><br><br /><br>"So using the best method available, we were unable to confirm Dr. Zamboni's theory that MS is caused by CCSVI," he said. "And our conclusion is that the narrowing of the neck veins is common and a normal finding in most people.<br /><br><br /><br>"We recognize that for many people with MS, this will be a great disappointment. Many people were hoping that this was really a breakthrough in terms of knowledge of MS."<br /><br><br /><br>In an accompanying commentary, Dr. Friedemann Paul of NeuroCure Clinical Research Center in Berlin and radiologist Mike Wattjes of the MS Center Amsterdam said the Canadian study "sounds a death knell for the hypothesis of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency as a disease entity."<br /><br><br /><br>"Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency is not highly prevalent in multiple sclerosis," they write. "The disorder is neither specific to the disease nor does it have a causative role."<br /><br><br /><br>Paul and Wattjes also said the findings should put an end to discussions about whether millions of dollars spent on researching CCSVI in relation to MS has been a waste of valuable time and intellectual energy.<br /><br><br /><br>The study should be viewed as "the definitive conclusion to this discussion … now it is absolutely clear that no reason exists to allocate any further resources to chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency research, be they financial or intellectual."<br /><br><br /><br>However, the MS Society of Canada, which primarily funded the $450,000 study, said in a statement that it "remains committed to funding research that will answer the questions of those who live with the disease."<br /><br><br /><br>And Traboulsee said a federally supported clinical trial of the so-called liberation therapy is going ahead as planned.<br /><br><br /><br>The cross-Canada study will enrol 100 MS patients with evidence of narrowed veins to receive either the venoplasty treatment — in which a tiny balloon is fed into the neck veins to widen them — or a sham treatment. Neither patients nor the doctors who assess them will know which treatment they received.<br /><br><br /><br>Researchers will follow patients for two years to assess whether they experience sustained improvement in symptoms and whether tests, such as MRI brain imaging, show evidence of a reduction or halt in the progression of lesions.<br /><br><br /><br>Traboulsee said it is critical that researchers determine whether many of the MS patients who have sought the treatment — including at least an estimated 3,000 Canadians — truly had improvement or experienced a placebo effect, as some critics of the procedure contend.<br /><br><br /><br>"People might want to discount this as a placebo effect," he said. "I think that's being a bit patronizing to people and we need to do the proper research to fully address if there is any treatment benefit. And if we determine treatment benefit, then we have to figure out why."<br /><br><br /><br>Yet Traboulsee admits he has struggled with the issue, given that Zamboni's theoretical basis for the therapy appears after many studies to have no validity. "If the original theory is now faulty, why continue down this pathway?"<br /><br><br /><br>"Sometimes these things can become separated, and what we've found is that although CCSVI as defined by Zamboni doesn't really exist … we still have the situation where thousands of Canadians have gone abroad and have had a treatment … (and many have) reported significant improvement."<br /><br><br /><br>Other underlying theories in medicine have been proven wrong but have still led to benefit for patients, he said. "I think it justifies going forward.<br /><br><br /><br>"But I'll be honest — I don't fully understand how they're feeling better," admitted Traboulsee, suggesting that opening up veins may set off a process in the nerves or cause the release of substances that reduce symptoms like fatigue and brain fog.<br /><br><br /><br>A spokeswoman for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, which has earmarked $6 million for the clinical trial, said the study will continue "because we still need to determine the safety of venous angioplasty and better evidence on patient outcomes."<br /><br><br /><br>So far, seven MS patients have been randomized to receive either the treatment or the sham procedure. All 100 patients should be recruited by next summer and preliminary results should be ready by fall 2015, Traboulsee said.<br /><br><br /><br>His message to MS patients is the same as it's been from the beginning: "Please do not rush out and spend your hard-earned money, mortgage your house, (spend) your life savings to get this procedure done out of country at private clinics.<br /><br><br /><br>"Research is the way to answer this," he said. "We're doing the research. We're doing it as rapidly as possible. one room challenge - family room week 2

It is only week 2 of the One Room Challenge (<a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2013/10/one-room-challenge-family-room-week-1.html" target="_blank">read week 1 here</a>) and it is already time to get down and dirty - aka carpet removal.<br /><br />Now in the interest of full disclosure, we removed the carpet several weeks ago, as soon as the leak was stopped and fixed, for obvious reasons. It's the stuff that is under the carpet that is the real work. The tack strips, the glue, the holes left by all of the nails. Hell on earth. I followed <a href="http://www.vintagerevivals.com/2013/06/how-to-paint-concrete-plus-my-secret.html" target="_blank">Mandi's tutorial</a> and it worked like a charm. It was super smelly however and since we are in a basement, and ventilation is a bit harder to achieve, there were a lot of breaks throughout the process. And the cocktails help too.
