Facilitates the management  of all donated items, which includes receipt, acknowledgement, and the  sorting of materials. Updates, maintains, and copy catalogs new and  donated materials, including searching for bibliographic records and  downloading them from online utilities, updating those utilities to  accurately reflect the University Libraries’ inventory as needed.  Initiates and supervises special projects as necessary and appropriate.  Assists in the training and oversight of student library assistants in  the processing of materials. In addition to many millions of people lacking health insurance, financial barriers to care and a lack of primary care providers compared with other rich countries, people in the US consume more calories, are more sedentary, abuse more drugs and shoot one another more often. Unfortunately, these debates often fail to factor in our health. It may tax less and spend less on social programmes than most rich democracies, but when you add in tax-based subsidies and private social spending, it <a href="http://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/social-issues-migration-health/is-the-european-welfare-state-really-more-expensive_5kg2d2d4pbf0-en" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-decoration: none; color: rgb(52, 163, 209); ">ranks as the fifth highest in the world</a>, just after Sweden. What distinguishes the US is how that money is spent. More goes on healthcare – while still leaving many without health insurance or access to care – and less on children, families and the disadvantaged.</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Digging into the social determinants of health can be tricky. Social scientists and other researchers are rightly trained not to confuse correlation with causation. In the US these ideas have yet to gain much traction.</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Moving beyond the dismal headlines generated by the NRC/IOM report, we can hope that the evidence of a health disadvantage in the US is now so compelling that the terms of the conversation and even the political calculus will begin to change. I got his photo and talked briefly with him, asking how he felt about not being included in the debate and if he hoped to be in future ones.  He was upbeat and said he's working to make that happen.<br /><br />Just down the hall stood Greg Letiecq in the hallway talking with someone so I patted him on the arm as I passed. NoVa was in the house.... <br /><br />Heavy media coverage. Extra tables were brought in after all seats were taken.<br /><br />Someone's cell phone went off at 12:25 on Republican side of ballroom -- it was playing some kind of country song that went on for several seconds while Cuccinelli was speaking -- another awkward moment.<br /><br />Many thanks to Marilyn Shaw with the VBA who does a great job year after year of communicating with the press and including bloggers. The Homestead was gorgeous, as always. Another year, another VBA debate tucked away into the archives.
