Toms River Continues To Rebuild A Year Later

I attended Wednesday's Tri County Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Luncheon in Pottstown to hear Paul Shives, Business Administrator for Toms River, NJ, speak on the recovery that Toms River faces from Sandy, even a year later.<br /><div><br /></div><div>Toms River is the ninth largest municipality in New Jersey, numbering over 90,000 residents at this point. Because of its size (41 square miles) and its position along a barrier island, Toms River features the most waterfront property of any New Jersey municipality. Given Sandy's eye moved ashore to their south, the Toms River area was particularly hard hit from the storm. </div><div><br /></div><div>Most of Toms River is west of the back bay; however, two parts of the community are along the barrier island -- Ortley Beach (which we're all aware of the damage) and Dover Beaches.  These are a part of the same barrier island that Mantoloking resides on -- the barrier island that was breached by Sandy's storm surge coming in at high tide during a full moon.</div><div><br /></div><div>Shives stated that while there's a lot that needs to be done in Toms River, much has been accomplished through partnership among state and local officials, as well as hard work by locals in numerous capacities. In fact, Shives mentioned that the last debris removal from the barrier islands occurred yesterday on Halloween.<br /><br />Out of Toms River's $10 billion property tax base, 20 percent of that was lost due to the storm. They apparently didn’t have budget to repaint the road markings, so the resurfaced around them. Aiee!</blockquote>Funding for basic infrastructure is a whopping $75 billion less than it was three years ago due to budget cuts and a gas tax that hasn't been updated since 1993,<br /><br />For the last three years, state, local and federal government groups have dramatically cut spending on roads, bridges and other infrastructure.  We currently spend less than half of what we need for highway repair -- and if we continue to not fix basic issues, it will only get worse.<br /><br />Unfortunately, federal, state, and local governments are only spending $91 billion annually on capital investments, meaning that each year our roads deteriorate further.<br /><br />It is not just highways in need of repair.  Over a tenth of American bridges need significant repair and maintenance.  Every day, 260 million trips are taken across these dangerous bridges.<br /><br />We need to refocus our priorities and start repairing our infrastructure while we can still afford to do so.  In the meantime, try to avoid the potholes.

NYC union construction workers twice as likely to be African-American

<span style="font-family: inherit;">A New York City construction worker who is union is twice as likely to be African-American as a New York City construction worker who is nonunion. </span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">That's the conclusion of the <a href="http://epi.org/" rel="nofollow">Economic Policy Institute</a> in a recent <a href="http://www.epi.org/blog/racial-underrepresentation-construction/" rel="nofollow">study</a> by Larry Mishel. The study shows the pattern is similar for the workforce living in the larger New York City metropolitan area.  </span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Conversely, New York City Latinos are less likely to belong to unions -- and more likely to be killed on the job. The <a href="http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/news/2013/10/24/new-york-latino-construction-workers-more-likely-to-die-on-job-report-says/" rel="nofollow">Center for Popular Democracy</a> studied OSHA statistics for New York City and discovered Latinos accounted for three-fourths of construction site deaths from 2003-11. According to <a href="http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/news/2013/10/24/new-york-latino-construction-workers-more-likely-to-die-on-job-report-says/" rel="nofollow">Fox News Latino</a>,</span><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Construction safety advocates and a study by the New York State Trial Lawyers Association cited safety violations on job sites run by smaller, non-union contractors and an unwillingness by some undocumented workers to report violations as main reasons for the high number of deaths among Latino workers.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></blockquote><span style="font-family: inherit;">The two studies paint a picture of unions as beneficial to the safety and prosperity of New Yorkers (something we all knew already, right?).</span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">An alliance of unions --including <a href="http://www.teamsterslocal282.com/" rel="nofollow">Teamsters Local 282</a> -- called <a href="http://www.buildupnyc.org/about/" rel="nofollow">Build Up NYC</a> is advocating for a stronger and more vibrant middle-class in New York City. Build Up NYC is promoting development that pays workers good wages and maintains safe work sites.
