He has <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2013/11/21/aaron-carter-files-bankruptcy-dog/#ixzz2lNEluw3Y" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">claimed in court documents</a>that he has assets worth just $8,232.16 – including computer and music equipment and $60 in cash – but owes creditors more than $2 million in liabilities. A big chunk of his liabilities is owed to the Internal Revenue Service: he has an outstanding tax bill totaling $1,368,140.</div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;"></div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Carter’s tax bills date back to 2003. <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/11/20/aaron-carter-tripped-up-by-irs-tax-lien/" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">In 2009</a>, the IRS slapped Carter with a million dollar lien – the same year he appeared on the ninth season of ABC’s<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Dancing with the Stars</em> with professional dance partner Karina Smirnoff. Smirnoff said about the tax lien and Carter’s debts at the time, “I don’t see why he can be held responsible. He was a baby when all that… happened.”</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">In 2003, Carter was just 15 years old. He was old enough to earn millions and be subject to tax but likely too young to understand his financial responsibilities. That’s what management is for, right?</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Carter has a new management team now but his prior management team included Lou Pearlman. Yes, you’ve heard of him. Pearlman created Trans Continental Records and was responsible for creating the boy bands ‘NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys – big brother Nick Carter’s former band and the best-selling boy band of all time. He also dabbled in reality television, “finding” the boy band O-Town on the first season of ABC’s <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Making The Band</em> (Pearlman would bow out for season two as P. Diddy took over search duties).</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Pearlman created and managed a number of short-lived popular bands under his belt including LFO, Take 5 and Innosense, whose original band members included pop princess Britney Spears and Playboy model Mandy Ashford. He also promoted a number of other artists on the label<span class="forbes_entity" style="background-color: #dddddd; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 1px; vertical-align: baseline;"></span> – including Aaron Carter.</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Pearlman appeared to be a cash machine. Only he had a bit of a secret: he was playing fast and loose with other people’s money. Nearly every musical act that Pearlman managed or represented has sued him for fraud – including Carter. Carter actually filed suit against Pearlman twice. He filed suit first in 2002, alleging that Pearlman failed to turn over hundreds of thousands of dollars in royalties. Then, just 15, <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/carter-pearlman-to-settle-20021017#ixzz2lNbxRwl5" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Carter said</a>, “Over in Europe, we sold millions of albums and I didn’t get anything for it.” That suit was settled out of court.</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Carter <a href="http://www.contactmusic.com/news/carter-wins-pearlman-lawsuit_1048651" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">sued again in 2007</a>, asking to be let out of his recording contract since he signed while still a minor. Carter won that suit. He also asked for an accounting of his royalties: that wouldn’t happen as Pearlman, who was awaiting trial at the time of the suit, would eventually <a href="http://www.taxgirl.com/lou-pearlman-stops-playing-games-with-the-feds/" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">plead guilty</a> to conspiracy, money laundering and bank fraud charges and is now in federal prison. Pearlman was <a href="http://www.taxgirl.com/larger-than-life/#sthash.NKi3elUx.dpuf" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">alleged to have bilked</a> about 1,000 investors of more than $300 million, as well as an additional $150 million from banks. To secure the initial funding, Pearlman offered fake tax returns to banks and investors for the years 2003 and 2004 allegedly prepared the accounting firm of Cohen & Siegel – a firm that didn’t exist but was made up in order to perpetuate the fraud. So maybe not the greatest financial role model for the young Carter.</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">And it wasn’t just Pearlman who let Carter down. In December 2003, Carter filed for <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/46444/aaron-carter-cans-mom" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">legal emancipation</a> from his mother and manager, Jane Carter. Carter alleges that his mother took more $100,000 from his bank account, <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/46444/aaron-carter-cans-mom" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">saying</a>: “I worked hard for months — 10, 11 hours a day, not including school and press appearances — and I come home and owe money!” Carter eventually reconciled with his mother, and they both attended Carter’s sister’s funeral last year (brother Nick did not appear, citing his family’s “<a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20567902,00.html" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">complicated dynamic</a>“).</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">All of these legal and personal troubles for Carter bunched at roughly the same time: the year 2003 really stands out. Perhaps not coincidentally, the lien for Carter’s 2003 tax bill alone is just under $1 million.</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Ten years later, Carter is still facing those bills. Several efforts to get back into the spotlight, including that stint on <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Dancing With The Stars</em>, certainly increased his profile but not his bank account. His management team hopes that a Chapter 7 bankruptcy will offer the singer – who is still very young – a fresh start. Chapter 7, which allows most debts to be discharged, is more drastic than Chapter 13, which generally results in a reorganization of debt. Carter likely opted for Chapter 7 bankruptcy because he doesn’t own anything of value – like a house – that he wants to hold onto.</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">While it can be tricky to get rid of tax debts in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, it is possible. You can <a href="http://www.irs.gov/publications/p908/ar02.html#en_US_2012_publink1000273402" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">discharge federal income tax debts</a> under a Chapter 7 bankruptcy if the timing is right and there’s no fraud or willful tax evasion. In terms of timing, the tax debts must be old, meaning from a tax return that was due at least three years before bankruptcy and you must have actually filed the return more than two years ago. Additionally, taxes must have been assessed more than 240 days ago.</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Unfortunately for Carter, a Chapter 7 bankruptcy does not generally result in a discharge of existing tax liens. Translation: the IRS can’t chase Carter to collect but the tax liens remain until the debt is paid off or until the liens are withdrawn, whichever comes first. Federal tax liens usually remain in place for up to 10 years after assessment (the same time period the IRS has to collect those taxes).</div><div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Carter isn’t focusing on the bad, however. He <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/21/showbiz/aaron-carter-bankruptcy/" style="border: 0px; color: #666666; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">views this as a step forward</a> as he tries to get his life back together. His publicist, Steve Honig, said, about the filing, “This is not a negative thing. It’s actually very positive. They believe in practicing loving kindness towards every single living creature. "All living things fear being beaten with clubs. All living things fear being put to death. Putting oneself in the place of the other, let no one kill nor cause another to kill."- Dhammapada 129.</p> <p>Animals need our sympathy. Every living thing contributes something to the world's ecosystems, and they help maintain a balance of nature. It is unfair for humans to deprive them of their right to live. In fact, Buddhists go as far as to symbolize their animals. In Buddhism, the elephant is a symbol of mental strength. The revered elephant serves as a symbol of the calm majesty possessed by one who is on the path to enlightenment. Specifically, it embodies the boundless powers of the Buddha, which are miraculous aspiration, effort, intention and analysis. Truly a divine being!</p> <p>The Dog Buddhists believe that dogs are closest to humans in reincarnation. Doesn't that actually make sense when you think about it? They're very domesticated and wonderful companions! The Dalai Lama often kept dogs as pets and sent dogs as gifts to other kings. Maybe not something we're accustomed to in the Western World, but certainly a sign of prominence for the Buddhist religion.</p> <p>In addition, one of the more unusual poses that many westerners may not have ever seen before is The Buddha sitting with a monkey and an elephant, giving up offerings to him.  Animals share our precious world with us. Both Buddhism and Taoism preach that  every creature contributes something to the maintenance of our planet, destroying them is not the solution to overcome our disturbances. We should take other measures to maintain the balance of nature. Remember, you could've been an animal at some point before this lifetime, so share the love!</p> <p>Buddhism is based on the teachings of <em>Siddhartha Gautama</em>, also known as <em>Shakyamuni</em> – sage of the Shakya clan or the 'Awakened One' of the Shakya clan. He is often pictured in the lotus pose, but there is a Buddha pose for every day of the week and everyone has their own "pose" that is determined by the day you were born. The Thai zodiac puts great importance on individual  days.</p> <p>Many Thai temples have 8 small Buddha statues, often times with bowls next to them for money offerings. The money is used to maintain the temple. Which bowl you donate into is determined by the day of the week you were born. Though there are only 7 days a week, Thai people split Wednesday into 2 poses: those born before noon, and those born after.</p> <p>Days of the week poses</p> <p>For those born on a Sunday, your Buddha poses standing upright, with his arms crossed over his abdomen, with the back of his hands facing out. The eyes are wide open. This pose symbolizes mental strength. Monday's Buddha has his right hand raised in the pose of Preventing Calamities of Preventing Relatives from Fighting. On Tuesday, the Buddha lies on his right side, with his right hand tucked under his head, and the left hand lying along the left side of his body. Wednesday, before noon, Buddha is posing with both of his hands carrying an alms bowl in front of his chest. Wednesday, after noon, Buddha is with a monkey and an elephant. The animals are giving an offering to him. Thursday is the Buddha in meditation. The Buddha sits in the lotus pose with his hands resting in his lap, with palms facing upwards. On Friday the Buddha is standing in contemplation. Both of his arms cross the chest, with the backs of his hands facing outward. Saturday the Buddha is seated under a Naga, which is a seven headed serpent), meditating. To launch the game, click on the play button in the center of the doodle, and select your doctor. 'I definitely didn't want you to just play one level and that is it, I love the idea of the Doctor being able zoom around the universe.' (And yes, doodle designer is Cruickshank's real, full-time job.)</p><br /><p>As the Guardian points out, the 'Whodle' comes after extensive lobbying from the Doctor Who fanbase, including an online petition that racked up 4,000 signatures. 'Doctor Who is a show that changed my life,' one petitioner noted a month ago. 'It not only has been a way to be entertained, but it also has been a way to connect with people. Some of my greatest friends were made because of a shared passion for Doctor Who.'</p><br /><p>The very first episode of Doctor Who premiered in November of 1963 on the BBC. The protagonist was played by British actress William Hartnell, who was to remain in the role for three years, until 1966. Hartnell's Doctor was old and a little grumpy; he sometimes supported his weight with an ebony walking stick. From the BBC synopsis of the pilot:</p><br /><p>Schoolteachers Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton become intrigued by one of their pupils, Susan Foreman, and visit her home address - a junkyard at 76 Totter's Lane - where they meet her grandfather, the Doctor. The Doctor and Susan are aliens who travel through time and space in their ship, TARDIS, which looks like an ordinary police box but actually houses a huge gleaming control room.</p><br /><p>Later, the Doctor and Susan, aided by Chesterton and Foreman, do battle with the malicious Daleks; they travel to France at the height of the Revolution, and to Mexico, where they visit with the Aztecs. Over the years, the hectic pace of the time-traveling stayed the same, but the hero changed quite a bit. In 1966, the First Doctor collapsed and returned, through a mysterious process, as the Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton.</p><br /><p>Troughton was replaced by Jon Pertwee; Pertwee by Tom Baker. The 31-year-old actor Matt Smith currently plays the series' lead, although the BBC says he will end his tenure as Time Lord. His replacement? Peter Capaldi, a Scottish veteran of big-budget flicks such as 'World War Z.'</p><br /><p>'It's been an honor to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell... But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go,' Mr. Smith said in June.</p><br /><p>In an appreciation on the Hero Complex blog in March, Robert Lloyd wrote that 'loss is the heart of the show' - the successive loss of one beloved character and the introduction of the next.</p><br /><p>'[I]t is a show about people who are meant to be together,' Lloyd concluded. Last night the concert went ahead as planned with country's shining stars paying tribute to the 'King of Broken Hearts.'</p><br /><p>Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, George Strait, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton were among the performers who took part in the almost four hour concert. Lakers Hall of Famer Vern Mikkelsen dies at age 85

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://thecelebritycafe.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/image_display/_img/2013/11/Vern_Mikkelsen.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Vern Mikkelsen, former Hall of Famer of the Minneapolis Lakers, passed away on Thursday.</p><br /><p>The Los Angeles Times reports that Mikkelsen died at the age of 85 surrounded by family in his home in Wayzata, Minnesota. He battled with prostate cancer for 11 years before his death. He also suffered two strokes and diabetes, according to the Associated Press. His wife died in 2002.</p><br /><p>The team also confirmed the sad news.</p><br /><p>Mikkelsen played for the Lakers for 10 years, and was inducted to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995. The forward was a six-time All-Star and four-time champion in his NBA career, which lasted from 1949 to 1959.</p><br /><p>'Vern was one of the first in a long line of great Lakers players, and a key link to our franchise's early years in Minnesota,' said Lakers President Jeanie Buss in a statement. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Millions Of Policies Set To End This Year Posted by Alex Nochez on Nov 23, 2013 - 3:34:25 AM</p><br /><p>CALIFORNIA―The Board of Covered California voted to keep its deadline to discontinue health plans that do not meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Thursday, November 21.</p><br /><p><img src="http://www.canyon-news.com/artman2/uploads/7/covered-california1.jpg" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>In a unanimous vote, the board that governs Covered California decided to keep the December 31 deadline that would force health insurers in the state to end existing health insurance plans that fail to meet ACA requirements for essential benefits. The board claimed that there was no benefit in extending that deadline that could affect over 1 million people in California , saying it could cause confusion about accessing affordable health care. The protection of consumers from poor health plans was also cited as reason for the decision.</p><br /><p>This comes after the Obama administration's plea to health providers nationwide that certain policies be extended for certain individuals whose policy cancellations would have them 'finding that [quality health insurance coverage] would be more expensive than their current coverage, and thus may be dissuaded from immediately transitioning to such coverage,' according to a letter from the Department of Health and Human Services.</p><br /><p>Taking into consideration the possible confusion, the board has also seen to design an implementation of a hotline that people can call should they have questions regarding their policy at 855-857-0445. In addition, the enrollment deadline for health coverage has been extended from December 15 to December 23, while deadline payments due have been extended from December 26 to January 5, 2014.</p><br /><p>By law, health providers must provide a 90 day notice of policy cancellation to its policyholders should their plan be discontinued or canceled.</p><br /><p>A recent study unveiled by Families USA shows that the number of residents with individual plans who have incomes above the 400 percent Federal Poverty Level (FPL), a number which would determine if they were eligible for federal financial help should it sit below the FPL, and who retain individual coverage for more than a year in California was .8 percent, or 264,232 people.</p><br /><p>'These new strategies will provide consumers a better enrollment experience, more flexibility in the selection of a plan and, most importantly, increased knowledge with which to make the best health coverage choice possible,' said Covered California Executive Director Peter V. Lee in a statement.</p><br /><p>Support for the decision has come from Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg who said in a statement of his own, 'The Covered California board has made the appropriate decision to stay the course.' The California Association of Health Plans President and CEO also commended the board, with the following statement, 'Covered California made the best decision for consumers by supporting the success of our new health insurance marketplace.'</p><br /><p>The board's vote has a detractor in California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, who has been vocal about his disapproval of Covered California's deadline for health insurers. 'Covered California could have honored President Obama's request, without causing damage to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act or the Exchange,' said Jones in a statement.</p><br /><p>Also released by Covered California were a number of statistics surrounding the rate and number of applications filed for health coverage in the new exchange since its debut. The organization boasts that 360,464 applications have been filed as of November 19, with 39 percent of those likely resulting in Medi-Cal qualification.</p><br /><p>In terms of demographics, the 18-34 age group has filed 6,904 applications, or 23 percent of all applications filed, which is almost proportional to the 21 percent population segment that is comprised of the 18-34 group. The 45-64 demographic, however, have filed 17,252 applications for health coverage, or 56 percent of applications filed. This over-represents the 25 percent population segment they currently hold.</p><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Summary: Joining Yahoo and Google, Twitter is the latest tech giant to promote its tactics for preventing decryption of sensitive user data.</p><br /><p><img src="http://cdn-static.zdnet.com/i/r/library/uk-carousel/twitter-logo-bird-620x202.jpg?hash=LGL4AwpkZm&upscale=1" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>Following up a similar move by <strong>Google</strong> earlier this week, <strong>Twitter</strong> has announced that it is adding forward secrecy to its digital doors.</p><br /><p>Forward secrecy is gaining traction with many top tech properties lately as it adds a new property to prevent cyber criminals from using cracked and/or stolen session keys to decrypt recorded traffic for nefarious purposes.</p><br /><p>But decryption prevention methods are also being implemented far more in order to both thwart off monitoring by federal agencies and save face with users.</p><br /><p>The micro-blogging platform actually wasn't one of the nine original tech giants revealed back in June to be utilized as a source for the National Security Agency's now-controversial data mining program, PRISM.</p><br /><p>That is likely because virtually anyone can sign up for Twitter, and for an unlimited number of accounts, with information that doesn't necessarily need to be authentic.</p><br /><p>Just one out of millions of examples of fake Twitter accounts includes one established this week dedicated to Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff's Christian Louboutin shoes worn during his fireside chat with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg on Wednesday. Needless to say, the haute couture, multi-colored hi-tops drew the attention of the tech press in the audience, for better or worse.</p><br /><p>Nevertheless, the San Francisco-headquartered company, which recently underwent one of the most buzzed-about IPOs in recent memory, is taking a proactive approach and also ensuring its name is in the mix of Silicon Valley giants taking a public stand against the U.S. Government's data collection methods.</p><br /><p>Jacob Hoffman-Andrews from Twitter's product security team took things further in a blog post on Friday, positing that forward secrecy 'should be the new normal for web service owners.</p><br /><p>'Our work on deploying forward secrecy is just the latest way in which Twitter is trying to defend and protect the user's voice in that world,' remarked Hoffman-Andrews.</p><br /><p>While he didn't explain the other methods Twitter is already employing or at least developing in this particular post, Hoffman-Andrews extensively outlined how forward secrecy is being implemented for shoring up security on twitter.com, api.twitter.com, and mobile.twitter.com.</p><br /></div>

'Getting On' and 'Ja'mie: Private School Girl': TV Review

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/thumbnail_medium_200/2013/11/getting_on.jpg" width="600"/>The Bottom Line<br /><p>Getting On is about the nurses and patients at an elder care facility -- a remake of a British series that hammers home the sad truth that aging is awful. And Ja'mie: Private School Girl is the latest Chris Lilley import that HBO has picked up, this time focusing on Lilley's least likeable character and proving the sad truth that a little bit of a purposefully annoying character goes a long way and a lot of that same character makes a half hour seem like half a century.</p><br />Premieres<br /><p>Sunday, Nov. 24 at 10 p.m. ( Getting On) and 10:30 p.m. ( Ja'mie: Private School Girl)</p><br />Stars<br /><p>Getting On: Laurie Metcalf, Alex Borstein, Niecy Nash, Mel Rodriguez</p><br /><p>Ja'mie: Private School Girl: Chris Lilley</p><br /><p>HBO has never been afraid to put on comedy series that aren't predictable ( Enlightened) or push the boundaries of one character's likability ( Curb Your Enthusiasm, Eastbound & Down). You could even say that HBO will put almost anything on as a comedy and hope that it will work.</p><br /><p>But the channel doesn't own a lot of blockbusters in the comedy genre. Curb has always been excellent, but there's no timetable for its return. Eastbound & Down is retiring. Veep and Girls are by far HBO's best offerings. If it can be said that HBO is willing to take a swing at just about anything, it should also be noted that making contact at a better percentage would also be nice.</p><br /><p>Its two latest offerings, premiering Sunday, are unlikely to help. Getting On is mostly a depressing and unfunny (which is more depressing) look at an eldercare facility, the people winding down their days ignominiously in said facility and a handful of people who work there. Based on the British series of the same name (which never aired in the U.S.), Getting On at once attempts to be an office comedy and at the same time a bleak look at what it means to be old and stuck in a mostly uncaring institution. Having watched the first three episodes (of only a six episode season), Getting On -- adapted by Big Love creators <strong>Mark V. Olsen</strong> and <strong>Will Scheffer</strong> -- never manages to nail what is very clearly a difficult tone to pull off. The comedy isn't particularly funny and the depressing nature of lives stalled out in eldercare purgatory makes the episodes drag out in a tediously slow fashion.</p><br /><p><strong>Alex Borstein</strong> ( Family Guy, MadTV), plays Dawn, a longtime nurse in the field and one who fluctuates between understanding for and flimsy tolerance of the patients and of her lot at the facility. She's bringing along Didi ( <strong>Niecy Nash,</strong> Reno 911!), a newer nurse and the one presence on the show who seems real and thus is someone you'd actually want to follow. Didi is also a very sweet nurse and that attribute is a fine counterbalance to the underlying sadness that's all around her. If Getting On has one strand that I'd be willing to follow, it's finding out how long Didi can go in such a situation without turning colder or simply not being able to take it emotionally.</p><br /><strong>PHOTOS: 'The Newsroom': Exclusive Photos of Aaron Sorkin and the HBO Cast</strong><br /><p><strong>Laurie Metcalf</strong> ( Roseanne, Toy Story, etc.) is Dr. Jenna James, whose disdain for the eldercare facility (the lowest part of the hospital totem pole) comes back to haunt her when a spat at the hospital finds her punished by getting sent back to oversee the eldercare group. We are meant to see in Dr. James the uncaring end of medicine as it pertains to the forgotten elderly, but Getting On doesn't even attempt to weave in the American health care situation in any meaningful way. Dr. James is just an odd bird who collects feces for a study she's hoping will make her seem more important (and the whole first-episode attempt at making elderly incontinence funny falls flat).</p><br /><p><strong>Mel Rodriguez</strong> ( Enlisted, Community) joins the show in the second episode as the head nurse but quickly becomes another character that finds conflict almost immediately (none of the characters are given much chance to become fleshed out) and someone else it's hard to care about.</p><br /><p>Undoubtedly some people will think that Getting On is heroic or cutting edge for taking on the subject matter. But the fact is, at least in the American version, there's not only a lack of humor to the show that fails to offset its bleakness, but there's nothing in the bleakness that is making a larger point. You can see what Getting On was trying to get at, but mostly you just see it failing to get there.</p><br /><p>As opposed to Getting On, <strong>Chris Lilley</strong> has never had any problems manufacturing humor. HBO tapped his Australian series, Summer Heights High and Angry Boys, which both wonderfully showcased the Australian series creator, writer and star for an American audience. Lilley, who plays a bevy of disparate characters in his series -- like a manically creative kid putting on an entire show for the world -- returns this time with Ja'mie: Private School Girl, which takes his snotty, spoiled, mean and foul-mouthed character and gives her starring status and loads more screen time.</p><br /><p>That's the problem.</p><br /><p>Ja'mie is funnier in short, searing scenes. She was surrounded in Summer Heights High with tons of other great Lilley creations and popped from the screen when given the chance to be, well, rich and bitchy. But centering one of Lilley's most annoying characters in a series to ramble on incessantly robs the character of its past effectiveness and makes her -- and the series -- almost unbearable to watch. In this series, Ja'mie is back from her brief stay among the great unwashed and returned to the final year of queen bee status at upper crust Hillford Girls Grammar in Sydney, where she's surrounded herself with sycophants and sets out to torment everyone else while drowning in her own shallowness.</p><br /><p>Maybe a good idea on paper, but not in execution. You'd have to be the biggest of Ja'mie fans to want to watch her never stop talking for 30 minutes. That's not to say Ja'mie: Private School Girl is devoid of laughs. Of course not. Lilley is too good at what he does to not find the funny. But it worked so much more effectively when he spread himself around to disparate characters.
