Hanging Out, Getting Interviewed & Taking Days Off

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="MsoNormal">Holaaaaaaaaaaa! So, this is just a quick post to let you know that there is no post today. Well, okay, there’s a post today, but it’s not regular type post. I’m posting yesterday’s show which was awesome and you should totally listen to it. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">We basically just kicked back and shot the breeze for the whole time. Well, for a while we shot the breeze with Bill the Kid down at the Beer Mine. That was pretty exciting. Then at the end of the show we shot the breeze with <a href="http://mikenet707.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Mike</a> who didn’t really have anything, but he called in anyway cause Matt yelled at him to and so he could tell is John Goodman story. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">We did have a very special Poet’s Corner with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/paul.piatt.9" target="_blank">Paul Piatt</a>, a reading of some of the top Favstar Tweets by <a href="https://twitter.com/MildCheddar_IWS" target="_blank">Bobby Kraft</a> and a few live look-ins at Wimbledon.  Aaaaaaaaaand of course there was a Pee Break with Schmoop where she talked about her Staycation! <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Other than that we talked about our Fourth of July weeks, Jay’s family being in town including the sweet little doggies. Jay’s trip to Springfield, MO and the Springfield Brewing Company and Bass Pro Shops and Matt’s bitter disappointment that Rally’s was closed on the fourth. And then we talked about lots of other stuff too cause we didn’t have any topic for the show. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Anyway, even without a topic it went pretty smoothly and was actually an above average show. Sandy toes and a weepy nose

It was a wonderful holiday with much needed, desperately needed time with my family. I did something unheard of... I left my work at home. Ok, I did bring my computer to whip out a newsletter that is due first thing tomorrow morning. But other than that, I didn't work. I finished reading a book, started re-reading another. The outlaws, yes they were here for part of the time, but it was okay. For the first time in more than six years, I took a nap on the beach. No worries about kids being swept away with the change of tide, gramma had it all under control. Slowly, ever so slowly, I felt the tension peel away and my eyelids grew heavy. When I woke, most of the other boats had left for the day and took their kids dogs and music with them. I'm in the middle of all God's glory. Just a few hours' drive one way and I'm in the mountains on top of the world or the other way I'm at the coast overlooking the edge of the world. It just doesn't get much better than this.<br /><br />We're back home now, back to school and work in the morning.  Today though, I have a strange sense of peace that I don't often feel.  <br /><br />I shed a lot of tears this weekend, probably an unnecessary amount of tears for someone who didn't know or barely knew me... though I knew him very well.  I thank you, Bas, for making such a huge impression on this whole community and not just in this little corner of my world.  <br /><br />In a strange way, I think those tears weren't just for him.  Maybe they were tears that never fell after my mom died.  We had a horrid relationship, as she did with everyone around her.  Many terrible things were said both ways between both of us.  Words that make me shudder as I hear my voice saying them, words that bring tears to my eyes as I hear her saying them to me.  I can't blame her for my mouth, though I can say she trained me well :-(<br /><br />She hung on for about 10 years, many longer than they said she would.  It wasn't a life that was cherished until the last moment. Not on her part or anyone else's for that matter.  I never cried for her.  I did cry for my dad as he faced the inevitability of dealing with the next chapter of his life.  I cried horribly as I found myself finally growing close to my father and getting to know him, just to have that rug ripped out from under me weeks later as the claws of his next wife sunk in.  I was again alone in the world.<br /><br />So many years of therapy later, I've come to accept that she did the best she could.  She was horribly abused as a child, was mentally ill, and genuinely knew no better.  My dad has issues too and also did the best he could.  Acceptance of it all allows me to forgive and move on.<br /><br />Once my tears started coming, my life from about 13 until I met the man that would become my husband started flashing by.  All the hurt, the loneliness, the mistakes (oh, the horrible mistakes), the emptiness, all of it hit me like a bomb.  Tears not just for the loss of a parent but for the one I never really had.  I've cried before, yes an awful lot.  But I'm not sure I've cried as much, as hard, or as completely as I did this weekend.  For once, I think I got it all out.  Stuff I didn't know needed to get out... there it went.<br /><br />Sitting in the sand, listening to the gentle waves, it just brought it all back together.  I'm not really sure where this story is going or what it really means.  I just know I'm at peace.<br /><br />

Should women lift weights or stick to cardio? These are questions you'll commonly hear in most gyms but most people never find out the facts on these subjects, such is the level of confusion surrounding fitness in general.<br /> <br /> Whether your goal is to gain significant muscular size or simply to lose some unwanted weight, you will find it a very confusing journey if you succumb to the many myths which are in popular culture. When you begin basing your training and diet around scientific fact rather than the theories displayed in magazines and gossip columns, you'll notice far more success. []<br /> <br /> 1) Should females do resistance training?<br /> <br /> Do not buy into the old stereotypes of guys lifting dumbbells and girls running on treadmills. McDonnell kicks off opening of Powhatan State Park

It was a busy weekend but would have loved to attend Governor Bob McDonnell's kick-off of the opening of Powhatan State Park located on the banks of the James River. <br /><br />The <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/news/local/central-virginia/powhatan/gov-mcdonnell-helps-dedicate-new-state-park/article_173fbe7e-e66f-11e2-bc9d-001a4bcf6878.html">Richmond Times-Dispatch</a> reported:<br /><blockquote>The park, the 36th in the state’s park system, is the first to open in central Virginia since 1946. On the river’s southern bank, it sits on 1,564 acres with 2.5 miles of river frontage. The land, in the northwestern corner of Powhatan County, was previously part of the property of the neighboring Beaumont Correctional Center.</blockquote>With more than 1,500 acres, the park is the 36th in the state park system.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.wric.com/story/22773933/new-va-state-park-to-host-mountain-bike-center">WRIC TV-8 reported</a>:<br /><blockquote>The governor also announced funding of $50,000 to serve as seed money in developing an International Mountain Biking Association ride center at the park.<br /><br />The park will eventually include camping, cabins and other improvements.</blockquote>The land is very familiar to my husband who grew up in that part of the Commonwealth so we hope to soon check out this latest edition to the Commonwealth's state parks.

LTE: 'Abortion should never have been politicized'

<i>On July 2, 2013, my step-dad Calvin T. Lucy was the CORRESPONDENT OF THE DAY for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/opinion/correspondent-of-the-day-for-july/article_0491be42-4f22-5ccc-a7cb-73c3a2f84e5b.html">Abortion ... does it need to be politicized?</a></i><br /><br />Editor, Times-Dispatch:<br /><br />Recently, on your Editorial and Op/Ed pages, two writers came to essentially the same conclusion concerning the belief that the abortion issue can never be resolved politically. In a letter, Read F. Goode Jr. stated, “The sheer fact abortion has remained a front page, red-hot issue every single day since its legalization is de facto evidence that some issues cannot reach a national consensus.” On the Op/Ed page, Robert Sarvis was quoted on several issues, including abortion. He stated: “The absolutism on the (abortion) issue is ruining our political discourse. I think most voters would like some relief from the demonization and over-the-top rhetoric coming from both sides.”<br /><br />The desired relief has been staring thinking voters in the face for several years. The politicization of abortion has been one of the most terrible political errors in recent history; in that it will never be resolvable on the national, state and local levels simply because it is a highly personal issue resolvable one case at a time only by collaboration between a woman, her spouse, her pastor and her doctor.<br /><br />The conclusion and relief is that wise Republicans will immediately take steps to remove all aspects of abortion from political platforms, stating that it should never have been politicized in the first place, regardless of how rosy and vote-rich it appeared to be. Wise people will recall the Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” That wisdom has been in short supply for decades.<br /><br />Calvin T. Bush's "... rebuilding of presidential authority, badly degraded in the era of Vietnam, Watergate, and Bill Clinton. He didn't hesitate to conduct wireless surveillance of terrorists without getting a federal judge's okay. He decided on his own how to treat terrorists and where they should be imprisoned. Those were legitimate decisions for which the president, as commander in chief, should feel no need to apologize."<br /><br />4. "... Bush's unswerving support for Israel. Reagan was once deemed Israel's best friend in the White House. Now Bush can claim the title. He ostracized Yasser Arafat as an impediment to peace in the Middle East. This infuriated the anti-Israel forces in Europe, the Third World, and the United Nations, and was criticized by champions of the 'peace process' here at home. Bush was right."<br /><br />5. "No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the education reform bill cosponsored by America's most prominent liberal Democratic senator Edward Kennedy. The teachers' unions, school boards, the education establishment, conservatives adamant about local control of schools--they all loathed the measure and still do. It requires two things they ardently oppose, mandatory testing and accountability. Kennedy later turned against NCLB, saying Bush is shortchanging the program. In truth, federal education spending is at record levels. Another complaint is that it forces teachers to 'teach to the test.' The tests are on math and reading. They are tests worth teaching to."<br /><br />6. "Bush declared in his second inaugural address in 2005 that American foreign policy (at least his) would henceforth focus on promoting democracy around the world. This put him squarely in the Reagan camp, but he was lambasted as unrealistic, impractical, and a tool of wily neoconservatives. The new policy gave Bush credibility in pressing for democracy in the former Soviet republics and Middle East and in zinging various dictators and kleptocrats. It will do the same for President Obama, if he's wise enough to hang onto it."<br /><br />7. "Medicare prescription drug benefit, enacted in 2003. It's not only wildly popular; it has cost less than expected by triggering competition among drug companies. Conservatives have deep reservations about the program. But they shouldn't have been surprised. Bush advocated the drug benefit in the 2000 campaign. And if he hadn't acted, Democrats would have, with a much less attractive result."<br /><br />8. Some conservatives are cursing Chief Justice John Roberts  John Roberts for his recent upholding of Obamacare but he is his own man and a conservative, and was appointed by Bush along with Sam Alito. "In putting them on the Supreme Court and naming Roberts chief justice, Bush achieved what had eluded Richard Nixon, Reagan, and his own father. Roberts and Alito made the Court indisputably more conservative. And the good news is Roberts, 53, and Alito, 58, should be justices for decades to come." I have to tell.........

Today, I fit into a dress a bought over 2 years ago and I haven't been able to wear it at all - it was too tight and now fits PERFECT.  I am so excited!!  I can see a difference - JUST TWO WEEKS!!!  crazy!<br /><br />My body is having a hard time adjusting to the new eating habits.  Not from a hunger standpoint, but a nutritional standpoint.  I think my potassium got a little low today because I was having charlie horses like mad.  I bought a supplement today and some bananas.  My mom always swore by drinking pickle juice, so I have some of that.  I've been feeling very fatigued and extremely nauseated.  So, I am trying to get some nutrients in so I can bounce right back.  Remember, I ate more than 3000 calories a day and I went down to  less than a third of that.  I can't wait until the 15th when I can afford to get my virtual nutritionist.  It will help in this area tremendously.   <br /><br />If you have any suggestions you would like to share, please do so.  I am open for opinions. <br /><br />This blog will be short and sweet because I had a very busy day and somewhat exhausted.  I ate fruit and some yummy pasta with chicken (frozen dinner - lean cuisine) oh, and eggs this morning.  I'm full and I can't even think of eating.  I will try to get some fruit in again in a bit.<br /><br />Remember, Sunday is my day off from Blogging so no new updates until Monday.  I hope to go by and weigh in Monday - or Tuesday for sure!!!  So, be on the look out.......<br /><br /><br />

One of the most important things on the Internet (for both hosts and visitors) is the use of thumbnails to attract attention. Think of what you decide to click on through the day, and most likely links with thumbnails are near the top. This applies to articles on a website generally, but also to architects and how they present themselves on sites like Architizer and Archinect, where firm logos are prominent. (A few years ago <a href="http://archidose.blogspot.com/2010/05/firm-faces-13.html">I looked at how some firms used these thumbnails to show their own faces</a>, but for the most part logos prevail.)<br /><br />So what are some of the trends in how architects brand themselves through logos? Browsing through <a href="http://archinect.com/firms" target="_blank">Archinect</a> and <a href="http://www.architizer.com/en_us/firms/" target="_blank">Architizer</a> I found some consistencies that are presented below, though this is hardly an exhaustive list. Logos often work in concert with firm names (What acronym is formed by the name? How does the logo express what the architects and firm are about?), but the below groupings focus solely on their appearance. Given that many people will decide within one second if they'll click forward (a guess, but probably a good one), it certainly makes sense to consider a logo as a thumbnail on a website, not just as
