I have been sharing excerpts from God Of Our Silent Tears in the order they appear in  the book, because the book is an argument from our encounter with evil to a better image of God to an understanding of how God helps ("God who has brought us thus far on the way") to a call for us to respond to evil and suffering in a godly way.  But the occurrence today of yet another mass shooting, another multiple homicide, prompts me to share this excerpt out of order. As we were about to go to press, the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary sent me back to add this section to the end. I have argued that God's response to the pain we feel in this transitory life is a transcendent redeeming beauty which manifest as a serene center, as compassion, and as vitalizing spirit. I conclude that our best response to suffering, our own suffering and that of others, is to mirror God's response. This excerpt applies that mirroring in the context of Sandy Hook. Perhaps it has something to say to today's new tragedy.<br /><br />      <br /><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 24.0pt; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt;">                  Over the years of writing this book, tragedies have compounded, each one forcing me back to the existential drawing board – seeing my text on the computer screen exposed as pitifully inadequate in the face of flesh and blood sorrow. There have been natural evils – 230,000 killed in the Haiti earthquake of 2010; 70,000 killed in the Sichuan quake of 2008; the Pakistan flood of 2012; the Japan earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2012. There have been human evils – atrocities in the Congo and Sudan; mass shootings at Virginia Tech, Ft. Hood, the Aurora Theater, the Sikh Temple, Tucson, and a one-room Amish school to name just a few.            <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 24.0pt; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 24.0pt; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt;">                        As this book goes to press, we have just witnessed the mass murder of elementary school children and their teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Again the question, “Where was God?” Again many interpretations are drawn. Absurd things are said, like “this is God’s punishment for the absence of prayer in schools.” <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 24.0pt; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 24.0pt; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt;">                        This book has not prescribed a neat formula to which such a thing can be reduced. The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary demonstrates that evil will not be reduced to any neat formula. We all do. If we suffer at their deaths, God suffers infinitely. The Cross happened again in Newtown, Connecticut. We meet God at that Cross, the God who will someday redeem and resurrect. The victims need a God who joins them, who goes all the way into the hell of death and grief with them. And they need people who embody God’s compassion, who, in Wolterstorff’s words, “Mourn humanity’s mourning, weep over humanity’s weeping, [are] wounded by humanity’s wounds . . . .” In the moment of loss, it is possible to find God precisely because in that moment we can find each other.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">                        The friends and parents of the slain children and teachers will need more than hope and compassion to find their way into a future. They will need that mysterious infusion of strength and courage the Spirit offers. They will need the meaning-making process of spiritual growth and transformation -- an inner process manifesting outwardly in life for others. That meaning-making will take different forms for each person. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">                        The public discourse in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre is a desperate scramble to make meaning out of senseless loss. People are proposing gun control, improved school security, expanded access to mental health, and other ways to improve society, mostly good enough ideas. But to me they all seem too small, too utilitarian. Tragedy of this magnitude calls for more than a technical fix to reduce the likelihood of it happening again. The best way to invest with meaning the wave of mass murders we have experienced in recent years would be to repent from social violence. Reasonable regulation of firearms would be the most obvious pragmatic way to back off from our compulsive habit of violence. But gun reform is a far, far cry from enough on the one hand, and extraordinarily hard to achieve on the other. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">                        Our societal violence goes much deeper than legislation can reach. More than any other developed nation, we have embraced the meta-narrative the late Walter Wink called “the myth of redemptive violence.” The myth he describes is an ancient story line beginning with the Enuma Elish, the Sumerian creation myth. Marduk, one of several Sumerian gods, becomes king of the gods because of his combat skills.  He slays the sea monster Tiamat and creates the heavens form her body. The import of the Enuma Elish, as Wink reads it, is that meaning, value, and heroism lie in killing the enemy. Wink offered the gospel of Jesus Christ as the counter-narrative of “redemptive love.” <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">                        But for every movie, book, and TV program valorizing a Christ-figure, there are 100 valorizing a Marduk-figure. The catechism of American culture is a course in the myth of redemptive violence. So we live with fantasies of someday blowing away a villain. The myth of redemptive violence invests our human worth in our capacity to kill. So we, as a nation, invested our wealth in a nuclear arsenal that would destroy every living person on earth many times over. We incarcerate more people than any other developed nation. Unlike most modern democracies, we persist with the death penalty. From the video games we sell our children, to our sports, to our law enforcement, to our foreign policy, we embrace violence. In our pride and in our fear, we have made what Isaiah called “a covenant with death”—meaning we ground our safety and our self-esteem on our capacity to kill. Is it then any wonder that the canaries in this spiritual coalmine turn assault weapons on our people, killing federal judges, young adults at movie theaters, and first graders at their desks?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in 6.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">                        When I think of a transformation that would give some modicum of meaning to the blood shed by our children, nothing less than a societal conversion from a model of valor like Marduk to a model of valor like Jesus will do. The Sumerian creation myth says the universe is born in bloodshed; hence, the Savior Marduk comes with guns blazing. Perhaps there are other reasons that we’re plumping up, they proposed. Among their alternate obesity theories: we’re not sleeping enough, air pollution messes up our metabolism, we’ve adapted to air conditioning— and so we don’t need to regulate our internal temperatures by ramping up our metabolic rates (thus, burning more calories). All that may be true, but that doesn’t change the fact that eating right and exercising are the ways to manage your weight. To that end, try incorporating some of these excellent ways to exercise without even knowing it. You may not think of the activities below as exercise—but at the end of the day, all of these strategies burn calories and get your heart rate up.<br />1. Wash your car.<br />Embrace the summer heat—with a hose: Burn calories and make your car look beautiful as you wash it, dry it and get it (and you) buff.<br />2. Do your own yard work.<br />Tell the teenage kid from down the street that you’ll mow your own lawn—and pay him to make some iced tea instead. While you’re at it, weed the vegetable garden and toss some new mulch around the perennials out front.<br />3. Reinstate the “water cooler.”<br />Everyone needs a periodic work break, but instead of emailing witty quips to your buddy in the next office, walk to the water cooler and dish in person.<br />4. Get started on that home-improvement project.<br />Painting, hammering, hoisting—it’s all exercise (some of it moderate to vigorous). And don’t discount all the walking that you’ll do as you wander around the big home-improvement warehouse looking for that specific hinge (or someone who can help you find it).<br />5. Dog sit.<br />For a puppy, ideally. You won’t be able to sit on the couch for long—unless you don’t care about your carpet—or your shoes. Know anyone with a dog? Ask if they’ll be heading out on holiday this summer, sans pet. You’ll sneak in a week’s worth of exercise—and probably earn yourself a nice bottle of wine upon their return.<br />6. Eat al fresco.<br />Pack a healthy picnic—one that requires schlepping a big ice-filled cooler across a field or a park. The development of Weimar cinema coincided with the transition from silent films to sound pictures and German filmmakers excelled in making cabaret-style comedies and popular musicals. Most film fans are familiar with <i>Viktor und Viktoria</i> (1933) as the inspiration for not one but four remakes. Berlin’s cabarets were home to some of Europe’s most creative and experimental individuals, encouraging a free exchange of ideas and influencing art, cinema, literature, music and philosophy. The cabaret scene brought into being an incisive and satirical world of humor and music, exploring fads and fashions, political ideologies and sexual mores in the city and Germany at large. In fact, the tension between conservative and liberal, experimental and quotidian made Berlin’s cabarets simultaneously attractive and a target to competing factions. Viktor admits that he is presently working as a female impersonator, and when illness prevents him from performing his act, he persuades his new friend to perform in his place. Susanne and Viktor’s luck changes over night and the pair is launched on a European tour that eventually takes them to London. Schünzel’s use of sound and image to comic effect, and his integration of singing and dancing in the plot, foreshadowed the integrated Hollywood musical. <i>Viktor und Viktoria</i> (1933) is not simply a brilliant example of the early sound era musical, but a joyous exploration of the rhythm of speech and music. The entire film is in blank verse, rhyme or <i>sprechgesang</i> (the spoken song), in combination with carefully orchestrated blocking, camera movement and editing. The film also reflects irony and nostalgia for operetta, once a part of the cabaret legacy and denounced in 1913 as ‘the worst enemy of German theatrical art’. The more optimistic film operettas of the late Weimar era reflect a myth that luck could bring overnight prosperity. The  material for Schünzel’s <i>Viktor und Viktoria</i> becomes a sophisticated adult comedy and adds levels of gender ambiguity, when the traditional plot of a woman dressing as a man evolves to a woman passing for a man. The film also expands the notion of pre-code films and takes the screwball comedy to levels Lubitsch and Mamoulian would not have been permitted to explore, in which feelings are present but denied or thwarted. However, contemporary audiences and non-German speaking viewers are at a disadvantage in appreciating the film’s allusions and nuanced jokes. The most skillful effort of translation can take the viewer only so far in understanding an element of humor uniquely rooted in Berlin joke-telling. In his book <u>Berlin Cabaret</u>, Peter Jelavich recounts an experience of a visitor to the city, “No gestures, no wry faces, no smirks: the Berliner is dry and cold-blooded when he jokes. He displays an intentionally deadpan countenance, which stands in such contrast to his words that it never fails to provoke laughter” (many cabaret performers stood absolutely still while performing). Although a visit to the barber and a visit to a seedy cellar cabaret play-out ironically, Susanne remains a sweet, if baffled, young woman in over her head, showing no hint of the transparent sexuality Dietrich displays in her Lola-Lola or Amy Jolly characters. This is hardly surprising given the political climate in Berlin at the time. Work on the film began, and the film's premier occurred, within month's of the Nazi accession to power. In October of 1932, Berlin’s chief of police ordered a ban on same-sex couples dancing in public. In January of 1933, the process of <i>gleichschaltung</i> (“the forcing into conformity”) brought artistic organizations under state control while eliminating objectionable artists from the field. The actress made twenty-five films between 1929 and 1937, and her role in Reinhold Schünzel’s <i>Peter der Matrose</i> (1929) was the first of seven comedies in which she appeared for the director. She continued to play coquettish and self-confident females, however, in 1937 when UFA became "the most horizontally and vertically intergrated German film conglomerate under the Nazis"; she found her career increasingly sidelined and she was forced to take a role in <i>Togger</i> (1937), a blatant propaganda film. In May of the same year, <u>People Of The Studios</u>, reported “O.E. Lubitz, once producer-manager for Bavaria and Atlantia films, has formed a company with Styria-Film of Vienna, with offices in Berlin. Renate Müller, one-time English star takes the lead in a film version of the Strauss operetta, <i>Die Fledermaus</i>", in fact, the role went to another actress. The reporter proceeded to refer to the actress as a “Nazi spy, film actress and musical comedy star” and the proposed film as a “spy thriller”. The actress's biography would eventually receive the cinematic treatment, over protests of surviving family members, in <i>Liebling Der Götter</i>/<i>Darling of The Gods</i> (1957). Tim Bergfelder in <u>International Adventures: German Popular Cinema and European Co-Production</u> describes the film's grim opening, “Even audiences previously unfamiliar with Müller’s fate would have known not to expect a happy ending after an introductory, and rather didactic, caption at the beginning of the film informed them that the narrative would 'portray the life and death of an artist in unfree times'. Ever find yourself in a discussion with a self-proclaimed "libertarian" who believes in "free markets?" They can't accept that some rich people aren't rich because they deserve it, but because they pillaged, looted and plundered and then got away with it.<br /><br />Our friend R.J. Eskow wrote a great piece for <a href="http://www.salon.com/2013/09/12/11_questions_to_see_if_libertarians_are_hypocrites/" rel="nofollow">Salon</a> in which he exposes the nuttiness of the libertarian beliefs that order in society arises "spontaneously" and that market forces always produce the best outcome.<br /><br />The <strike><a href="http://benedict%20arnold/" rel="nofollow">Benedict Arnold</a></strike> Koch brothers are big advocates of what they call libertarianism. They spend millions on think tanks and front groups that claim to promote libertarian views -- mostly because that sounds better than "we're tools of greedy corporations." The brothers are notorious for benefiting from huge amounts of government largesse while demanding spending cuts for everyone else. They get big government contracts, enormous ethanol subsidies, use taxpayer-funded roads for logging operations and graze their cattle for free on federal land.<br /><br />So if you find yourself talking to someone who claims to be a libertarian, try the Libertarian Hypocrisy Test out on them:<br /><ol><li>Are unions examples of "spontaneous order"?</li><li>Are you willing to admit that production is the result of many forces, each of which needs to be rewarded?</li><li>Can you acknowledge that employees who bargain with their employer, either individually or collectively, are employing market forces?</li><li>Are you willing to admit that the "free market" requires regulation?</li><li>Do you believe in democracy? It always boggles my mind.<br />I can't for the life of me understand why some people who get pissed off decide they need to go kill a whole bunch of other people they have never met before.<br /><br />Let me say this to any other potential assholes with thoughts of mass murder on their minds.<br /><br />Use one fucking bullet on yourself first and save the rest of us a bunch of grief if you are that unhappy.<br /><br />Seriously,just kill yourself now. Taking Responsibility

That's what I've set out to do, to take responsibility.  Seems silly for me to even say that, I'm extremely responsible.  Work stuff, not so much, but that's more a boredom and procrastination issue than being irresponsible.<br /><br />Much of my life has been essentially devoted to making everybody happy, to make everything run smoothly and efficiently, and basically to make everything perfect.  I take it personally when I can't make others laugh or when we hit bumps in the road were preventable.  Anything short of ideal I see as a personal failure.  I understand this is something I need to learn to move past but it's deeply ingrained in my personality.<br /><br />My old shrink "Sweets" has been found. We broke up a few months ago when he moved to a new practice and a non-compete agreement prevented him from seeing me.  I found him at the new place and we're just not going to transfer my records to make it all okay on his end.<br /><br />It felt good to be back.  He already has a good grasp on my nutty little head and doesn't judge my often questionable choices.  I laugh at me and it gets him laughing.  It makes for a good time and he was glad to have me back.<br /><br />I've become comfortable in that questionable little gray area of not quite right even though it's not wrong.
