It is in line with the raising of Germany’s military profile that we have predicted ever since the U.S. administration announced a refocusing of its defense priorities to embrace the ASIAN sphere to a loss of focus on the NORTHERN Hemisphere, in particular EUROPE and the MIDDLE EAST. </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">German-Foreign-Policy.com, quoting wordage from the Kiel study, states that it was conducted “against the background of the ‘geostrategic realignment’ of the U.S. toward SOUTHEAST ASIA.” In the light of this realignment of U.S. defense priorities, the report claims that the GERMAN government has “in the future more responsibility to take over the maintenance of stability and security of EUROPEAN borders in troubled regions.” </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">The report claims that “it is in the interest of GERMAN ‘foreign policy’ to assist in ending the rebellion and restoring order and safety for the governments of ‘fragile’ respectively ‘weak’ states whose ‘stability’ is being threatened by ‘insurgents.’” </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">SOCIAL UNREST AND POLITICAL UNCERTAINTY WILL CONTINUE TO DEFINE THE EUROZONE FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE</b></span></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">In the author’s view it is obviously a responsibility of the GERMAN government to decide which are those “fragile,” “weak” states whose “stability” is being threatened. The recent expression of GERMAN attitudes toward GREECE and CYPRUS comes to mind. With a situation extant in EUROPE that leads analysts to claim “social unrest and political uncertainty will continue to define the EUROZONE for the foreseeable future,” any number of EU states could be read to fit that definition. </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">Not so long back in history, a certain GERMAN leader apparently decided that POLAND, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, BELGIUM and the NETHERLANDS were “fragile,” “weak” states whose “stability” was being threatened, and overran them in Blitzkrieg warfare! </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">In words not used to describe GERMAN foreign policy for 70 years, author of the report, Robin Schroeder of the Institute for Security Studies at the University of Kiel, declares that, “Strategically, one must focus on ‘<i>all means available to the state’</i> to <i>smash</i> action directed against WESTERN [GERMAN] interests by resistance movements, but also of ‘over-ambitious state building project(s)’ such as adopted in AFGHANISTAN” (op. cit.; emphasis added throughout). </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">Schroeder then observes that the role of the Bundeswehr is critical to the success of GERMANY’S counterinsurgency initiatives, calling for a wider deployment of the GERMAN military to “be placed so that they can be used immediately in <i>potential future scenarios</i>which require the management of a rebellion and the fight against irregular forces.” </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">Again, the assessment of “potential future scenarios” is left up to the GERMAN government to decide. This is to hide the reality of a heightened aggression in the strategic planning of the GERMAN High Command and the glaring fact of a GERMAN industry yet once again highly tooled for the production of military weapons. </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">Now, using the excuse of the threat of stability in EUROPE posed ostensibly by “fragile,” “weak” states, GERMANY’S Ministry of Defense is about to adopt plans that will produce what Spiegel Online once termed a “<a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/no-longer-the-aggressive-camping-organization-afghanistan-deployment-forges-more-assertive-bundeswehr-a-794189.html" target="_blank">more assertive Bundeswehr</a>,” deployed not only in current theaters of combat, but even in areas designated by the GERMAN government as “potential future scenarios” for conflict. </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">One vital key to the preparation of the GERMAN military for its “more assertive” role has been the Bundeswehr’s involvement in AFGHANISTAN. This has provided GERMAN troops and their officer cadre with vital battle hardening not experienced since World War 2. For Bundeswehr officers, it has involved not only the command of the 4,000 German troops in AFGHANISTAN, but also, on occasion, a command extended to the over 11,000 NATO contingent deployed in that country. </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">CHANGING THE CULTURE OF THE BUNDESWEHR</b></span></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">Maj. Gen. Hans-Werner Fritz was the first GERMAN officer to order an artillery salvo in combat in a foreign theater since World War 2. Since that experience in Kunduz, AFGHANISTAN, in July 2011, GERMAN troops have been engaged in many more such battles in that country. </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">As Spiegel observed, “The counterinsurgency operation in <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/no-longer-the-aggressive-camping-organization-afghanistan-deployment-forges-more-assertive-bundeswehr-a-794189.html" target="_blank">AFGHANISTAN</a> is also slowly changing the culture of the Bundeswehr, whose operational thinking had until then been largely shaped by its experience of peacekeeping in the BALKANS”. The extent to which “counterinsurgency” strategy may be used to justify GERMAN military expansion is made very clear in the Kiel report to the GERMAN Defense Ministry. </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">The propaganda effect of soldiers returning home who have been hardened in combat in AFGHANISTAN is not lost on such as Major General Fritz. He “speaks of a ‘different generation’ of young GERMAN officers who, unlike their predecessors, have seen extensive combat. ‘Obviously these young people are affected by what they experience,’ he says. ‘They have a clear idea of the sharp end of our profession. Gen. Hans-Werner Fritz on Feb. 24, 2011, RC North is under the command of Bundeswehr Maj. Gen. Markus Kneip with U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Sean P. Mulholland as his deputy. They are responsible for nine provinces stretching 900 kilometers east to west and 400 kilometers north to south. Included are 14 cities (like Mazar-e-Sharif or Kunduz) and 9,000 small villages. It borders five neighboring countries: TURKMENISTAN, UZBEKISTAN, TASCHKISTAN, CHINA and PAKISTAN. </div><div class="quote" style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="quote" style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">UK AND USA OBLIVIOUS TO THE DANGERS OF A “MORE ASSERTIVE” GERMAN MILITARY</b></span></div><div class="quote" style="line-height: 15.75pt;"><br /></div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">The administrations in London and Washington remain largely oblivious to the dangers of a “more assertive” GERMAN military. While they are increasingly diverted by significant financial and economic challenges plus the prospect of increasing social disruption at home—and with the U.S strategic focus transferred largely to SOUTHEAST ASIA—GERMANY quietly reasserts itself in its traditional militaristic, imperialist role. </div><div style="line-height: 15.75pt;">There’s more than a sense of déjà vu about all this. There are certain uncanny parallels with the 1930s. Yet there is a voice that is increasingly answering the prophetic call to warn of the impending storm that is even now building in EUROPE’S heartland. Not because I hate myself or I'm rested, but because I have a burning dream.<br /><br />You see, I've found that dreams aren't made on sandy beaches with your feet up drinking a cold Diet Coke. That might be where they are first thought about, but it isn't where they are made.<br /><br />I've accomplished more dreams since I started setting my alarm clock for 5 am than before. Dreams are made out of work. They are made out of early mornings and late nights.<br /><br />Five am is particularly attractive to me (and sometimes 4 am if on a deadline.) They are attractive because they are guilt free. I have no one who needs my attention and more importantly, there is no one who feels ignored or untended to. If I have to work all day and let my family know ahead of time, there's not usually struggle there.<br /><br />So, I'm up writing again on a Saturday morning when lots of people are sleeping. This will be my second book. I did this on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0132610353/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0132610353&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwbrighc-20" id="static_txt_preview" style="background-color: white; color: #996633; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; text-align: center;" target="_blank">Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds: Move to Global Collaboration One Step at a Time</a> and I'm sure I'll do it again.<br /><br />Lots of dreams mean lots of work, but like a good delicious watermelon, you can only bite one small piece at a time.<br /><br /><h2><b>The 3 keys to reaching your dreams</b>:</h2><br /><ol><li><b>FOCUS. </b>Pursue one at a time</li><li><b>ENLIST SUPPORT. </b>Make sure your inner family circle is supporting and with you (don't ignore them)</li><li><b>WORK. </b>Make a plan for when you'll work on it every week so that motion is always forward</li></ol><div>If you struggle with your family being "in on" your dream - there are ways to work with that. It also doesn't mean ALL of your family. For me, my inner circle is my husband: 1 person. The person you live with should be 'in on" or at least respect that your dream is happening because it takes the sacrifice of everyone in the house to help dreams happen. For me, no dream is worth losing my family. </div><div><br /></div><div>I add also a fourth and <b>PRAY </b>over it - which for me, as a Christian, is vital. The dreams I pursue must be aligned with my personal values or the inner conflict will sabotage any forward motion.</div><div><br /></div><div>Got a dream? Here is a view looking from the west, where the building reflects <a href="http://departmentstoremuseum.blogspot.com/2010/06/john-wanamaker-new-york.html">Daniel Burnham's Wanamaker department store</a>:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/8723011673/" title="51 Astor Place by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="51 Astor Place" height="516" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7384/8723011673_6bc1f924a9_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br />I have not really studied the design of Maki's building, and I'll admit I did not fall in love with the early  renderings of it, but I don't think it's the best (or would that be  worst?) example of what Bernstein is criticizing. The faceted  massing and variety of glass and framing types push the building a notch  above most glass-wrapped buildings in the city. If anything, it's a glass building made even glassier by its small trapezoidal site, which lets it be seen prominently from at least three sides, and by the adjacency of the old stone buildings of Wanamaker's and Cooper Union's <a href="http://cooper.edu/about/history/foundation-building-great-hall">Foundation Building</a>—the latter is visible on the left side in this view looking north up Third Avenue:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/8723011295/" title="51 Astor Place by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="51 Astor Place" height="575" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7380/8723011295_6ed04e9b33_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br />In these views from the south and east (above and below), the double-sided nature of Maki's design comes across. On the west, where it reflects Burnham's 1905 building, 51 Astor Place appears to be a glass slab, akin to a small-scaled Miesian office building. But on the east it reads as three masses: the tallest black slab, a truncated triangular section in the middle, and a four-story base that fills just about the whole block, minus a plaza on the southeast corner (the massing can be seen best in <a href="http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.showprojectbigimages&img=2&pro_id=2044">this model view</a>). This sculpting of the glass building is fairly diagrammatic, but it's made better by the articulation of the exterior wall—the diagonal change from dark, butt-glazed panels to lighter glass with vertical fins gives the impression that the middle section of the building peels away from the taller slab. I'll grant that this is a visual conceit, but it's one that somehow manages to work well.<br /><br />Here is a view looking from the east, with Charles Gwathmey's earlier glassy "<a href="http://www.gwathmey-siegel.com/portfolio/proj_detail.php?job_id=200204">Sculpture for Living</a>" in the background:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/8724132288/" title="51 Astor Place by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="51 Astor Place" height="480" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7454/8724132288_067a9a6541_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br />Where I disagree with Bernstein is the fact he lumps so much scorn on Maki's building but goes pretty easy on Gwathmey's earlier building—its undulating wall is seen in the middle of the photo below, a view looking north on Lafayette toward 51 Astor Place. If there is one notable glass building in New York City since 2000 that I cannot stand, it is Gwathmey's tripartite tower. The clunky tower does the same things as Maki's tower (reflecting/refracting its surroundings, breaking up the mass, using different types of glass and framing), but in a much less elegant way. The faceted curves that make up the portion of the tower above the two-story base is one of my least favorite anywhere. Maki's building has a much bigger footprint than the Sculpture for Living, but I'd argue that the later building works better with the neighborhood, in terms of massing and articulation of glass, than the earlier one.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/8724132634/" title="51 Astor Place by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="51 Astor Place" height="410" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7373/8724132634_fff6d41851_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br />In terms of Bernstein's general argument—glass as the default wrapper for new buildings needs to be reconsidered—I'm in agreement. It's something I've actually <a href="http://archidose.blogspot.com/2006/05/glass-is-new-painted-concrete.html">talked about in the past</a>, though to me the issue is about the design and articulation of glass walls as much as their prevalence. If all glass walls were given the care of 51 Astor Place (the area above the entry on Lafayette is seen below), or a building like 7WTC (not 1WTC, which is bland in comparison), then the "glazing over of New York" would not be so objectionable.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/8723011547/" title="51 Astor Place by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="51 Astor Place" height="480" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7338/8723011547_e7132b7a0b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br />One example Bernstein uses that I am in total agreement with is <a href="http://3columbus.slgreen.com/">3 Columbus Circle</a>, a 1928 that was <a href="http://nyc-architecture.com/?p=1047">literally glazed over</a> with what the developers call a "New Glass Sleek Façade" to create a new image for a building that occupies a similarly small and trapezoidal site (but in a more vertically crowded context) to 51 Astor Place. If, as Bernstein says, "it takes both old and new, working in concert, to keep a city from becoming a suburban office park," then arguing to maintain the historical qualities of buildings like 3 Columbus Circle makes more sense than decrying 51 Astor Place's attempts at fitting into its context.
