Furthermore, immigration movements from the BALKANS towards WESTERN EUROPE have actually lowered the population in BULGARIA, over the past decade or so.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The BALKANS has always constituted one of the fiercest terrains of ethnic – Cultural enmity in EUROPE. The reasons for the above are the placement of the Peninsula close to ASIA that reserved the role of the “EUROPEAN gatekeeper” for the whole of SOUTH EASTERN EUROPE. One has to remember of the Kraijna border area created by the AUSTRIANS in the 17th century in order to counterweight the Ottoman forces. </span></span></div><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Future seems to have elements of repeating this situation due to the ongoing rivalry between WEST and EAST, a phenomenon that one can easily retrieve by reading Homer’s Iliad or by comprehending the PERSIANS wars back in the 5th century BC, as they were recorded by Herodotus historiography. The BALKANS are the gateway between the WEST and the EAST, where OXIDANT meets ORIENT. <br /><br /><span style="color: blue;"><b>THE BALKAN PENINSULA REMAINS MORE THAN EVER “THE SOFT UNDERBELLY OF EUROPE”</b></span></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><br /></div><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The overall challenges for security and intelligence services, oriented in the BALKAN region seems overwhelming, judging by the multitude of challenges involved and the tasks needed to overcome them. The current époque has brought the re-engineering of security policies, in order to combat non- symmetrical threats such as the ones of organized crime and terrorism. Taking into account the globalization process, the interrelation between societies and the breathtaking advancements in telecommunications and transport; it is fair to assume that certain issues should be seriously reflected upon, on a different perspective than the traditional mode.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">A multiparty approach to organized crime should be form here upon the core of any intelligence activity in the BALKANS. Organized crime –Along with the rest of the perils for modern societies- need measures that are up to the modern way of life and communication of ours. A parallel and well constructed method of Open Source Intelligence gathering and the operation of specialized crime intelligence units would certainly help towards the aim of curbing crime and its calamities. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">In addition a conclusive analysis and synthesis of the available information, without any bias; should be the core of any serious attempt into reaching viable prognosis and stall malicious situations such as terrorists incidents and further empowerment of organized crime.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><br /></div><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">In order for the aforementioned to become a custom reality, there has to be a constructive and significant replenish of the human resources involved and an upgrade of the present era technical equipment. Celebration of 35 years of St. Paul's Swimming Club

<i>February is Book Month on A Daily Dose of Architecture. M. Stern Architects</i></b></a> by Robert A.M. Stern<br />The Monacelli Press, 2012<br />Hardcover, 400 pages<br /><br /><img alt="28-28_evidence.jpg" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/28-28_evidence.jpg" title="Book cover" /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.ramsa.com/people/robert-a-m-stern.html">Robert A.M. Stern</a> is an architect who fans of modern and contemporary architecture love to hate. His postmodern designs of the seventies and eighties gave way to a strong embrace of traditional architecture that continues to this day. Yet one's impression of Stern must be balanced by his 15-year tenure as <a href="http://www.architecture.yale.edu/drupal/people/faculty/stern-robert-am">Dean of the Yale School of Architecture</a>, where his own stylistic leanings hardly drive the curriculum (Yale is more like other Ivy League programs than, say, <a href="http://architecture.nd.edu/">Notre Dame's neoclassicism</a>), and his prolific writing, evidenced mainly by the New York histories (<i>1880, 1930, 1960, 2000</i>) that he co-authored. Even more books have been made on Stern's architecture—fifteen from 1981 to 2010, or one every two years. Number sixteen is <i>Evidence</i>, a welcome compact monograph, when compared to the coffee table tomes on his work that have prevailed in recent years.<br /><br />Where some recent titles have focused on Stern's houses and gardens (2005), buildings and towns (2007), and campus buildings (2010), <i>Evidence</i> is less concerned with typology, or even with presenting his projects as understandable wholes. Instead the book focuses on architectural elements—thresholds, paths, facades—and architectural form. In the short introduction, Stern even calls the book "evidence [of] a multitude of solutions that nevertheless reflect a consistent attitude to form." What follows is page after page of full-bleed photos without captions, grouped via the various elements and attitudes. Yet without a table of contents to guide the way, the book becomes a meandering journey through 40 years of Stern's career. It's not until page 378 that a key to the buildings photographed can be found; even then it's not easy to pair them up, given the lack of pagination.<br /><br /><i>Evidence</i> is like a print version of an online slideshow, where instead of swiping or clicking the right arrow, one turns the pages to see more photos of Stern's buildings. In this sense it's odd that an architect like Stern would be given this sort of "archi-porn" treatment, but I think ultimately this book helps to connect the architect with clients rather than other architects. Do potential clients want to read about individual projects, or would they rather look at some architectural variations of threshold, path, and facade? The answer is an easy one. What the book also shows, not surprisingly, is the strong relationship between an architect and a photographer, in this case Stern and <a href="http://www.peteraaron.net/">Peter Aaron</a>, who is responsible for about 90% of the book's photos. She got her Caseen stylus and showed me what she was doing and I loved it. She said that she had a whole semester's worth of notes. She took notes in this and went back to her dorm and printed off the notes so she could highlight and study them but that when she needed to review, she could. I have to admit, I was quite envious. There are some classes I took that I'd love to have in evernote. If you use a Droid, I'd recommend trying out handy notes. By his thinking, the Kaepernick-style quarterbacks — players such as Seattle's<a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/football/russell-wilson-PESPT0015762.topic" id="PESPT0015762" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Russell Wilson">Russell Wilson</a>, Washington's <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/football/robert-griffin-iii-PESPT0014793.topic" id="PESPT0014793" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Robert Griffin III">Robert Griffin III</a> and Carolina's <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/football/cam-newton-PESPT00008878.topic" id="PESPT00008878" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Cam Newton">Cam Newton</a> — eventually will log more pocket time than a stingy man's wallet.</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">"Sooner or later, you get straightened up to the fact that to deliver championship football, it's from the pocket," said Young, now an <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/espn-%28tv-network%29-HOC792.topic" id="HOC792" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="ESPN (tv network)">ESPN</a> analyst, who capped the 1994 season by securing a fifth championship for the 49ers.</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">"I might be proven wrong, but I think we have a special gap in time. There's something unique happening, and I think it will close. Will it completely close? No. And I think that young, mobile quarterbacks will become more valuable now rather than in the past, and maybe become the prototype."</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">But, Young said, the ability to shred a defense with the run "can never be the full measure of what quarterbacks need to do in the league." That's why players such as Kaepernick, Wilson and Griffin — all of whom can pass, all of whom made the playoffs this season — are offensive cornerstones, and the one-dimensional <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/football/tim-tebow-PESPT008528.topic" id="PESPT008528" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Tim Tebow">Tim Tebow</a> is not.</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">Flacco, whose own father describes him as "dull," is one of the more exciting passers in football because he throws the risky passes, the ones that tickle the fingertips of defenders but ultimately rest in the hands of his receivers. From his bombs to his back-shoulder throws to his darts he could wedge through a mouse hole, Flacco takes chances.</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">In three games this postseason, Flacco has completed 54.8% of his throws for 853 yards and a lofty overall passer rating of 114.7. He has thrown 162 passes without an interception, his last coming in a Dec. 16 loss to Denver. He's not a dink-and-dunk quarterback; he's completed 15 passes of 20 or more yards in the three playoff games.</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">"He's a guy that was always in constant control," said K.C. Keeler, Flacco's college coach at Delaware. "And I asked him one day, 'OK, I'm going to talk to a youth group someday about you, what made you great. What makes you great?' And he goes, 'I'm not afraid to fail. It's that simple. I'm going to prepare as hard as I can, and I'm going to go out there, and it doesn't matter what the arena is, I'm just going to go play. And if we're successful, great. And if we're not? I'll live with it. But I'm not afraid to fail.'</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">"When you watch Joe play, you just wonder, 'How does he stay so calm?' Well, that's how he was brought up. This isn't something that I instilled in him or any other coach did. His parents just did such a great job of their simple messages. And that simple message of not being afraid to fail is the reason he's playing in this big ballgame now."</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">Flacco might not be afraid to fail, but, in the NFL, the stakes can't get any higher than Sunday's game.</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">Both of these teams were turned back at the altar last season — Baltimore came within a dropped touchdown pass of beating New England in the <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/football/american-football-conference-ORSPT000000250.topic" id="ORSPT000000250" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="American Football Conference">AFC</a> championship game, and San Francisco fumbled away its <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/football/national-football-conference-EVSPR00003532.topic" id="EVSPR00003532" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="National Football Conference">NFC</a> title chances in an overtime loss at home to the <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/football/new-york-giants-ORSPT000197.topic" id="ORSPT000197" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="New York Giants">New York Giants</a>.</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">"I think last year, just speaking for myself, is just like, 'Damn, we got so close,'" 49ers defensive tackle <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/football/justin-smith-PESPT000008996.topic" id="PESPT000008996" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Justin Smith">Justin Smith</a> said. "I've never been that close in my life. You don't think it's over or your window is closed or anything like that, just personally speaking, and you feel it kind of shutting.</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;">"To be back in the NFC championship game, I don't think our team took it as much for granted how hard it is to get there. Getting to the Super Bowl, now especially, you have to take advantage of it."</div><div style="color: black; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; text-transform: none;"></div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">The 49ers have a rich history of seizing these moments. They are 5-0 in Super Bowls and aiming for a sixth ring, which would tie them with Pittsburgh for the most by any franchise. San Francisco and Dallas are currently tied for second place.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">San Francisco has won a Super Bowl in New Orleans before, stomping Denver, 55-10, in Super Bowl XXIV (Jan. 28, 1990).
