The full song emerged this weekend as a tender, expansive ballad for her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. The song opens with an echoey a cappella chorus before the beat kicks in with the lyrics “When you were born the angels sighed with delight/ They never thought they’d seen such a beautiful sight.” Strings, pianos runs and hand-claps punctuate further lyrics about kissing little feet and perfect smiles. My Proust (Book) Questionnaire

Designers & Books has been celebrating the 100th anniversary of the publication of the first volume of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time with <a href="http://www.designersandbooks.com/blog/celebrating-proust-anniversary-proust-questionnaire-book-edition">a book version of the Proust Questionnaire</a>. Like the original, the book version aims to reveal one's personality through pointed questions, in this case about one's favorites, collection, and habits. I've liked reading the responses that D&B has been posting throughout November, so I thought it would be fun to tackle all of the 25 questions (respondents at D&B have answered between 10 and 25). It ended up being more challenging than fun, but enjoyable nevertheless. 1. Of these, your reading preference: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama: Nonfiction. I can't remember the last time I read anything else. 2. Your favorite childhood book (or favorite childhood author): The books that come to mind from my childhood are those by Dr. Seuss and P.D. Eastman, like <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0394844947/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0394844947&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">And To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0394800184/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0394800184&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Are You My Mother?</a> As an adult, my favorite childhood books (for my daughter) are those by Mick Inkpen and Crockett Johnson, such as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316418862/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0316418862&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">The Blue Balloon</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0064430227/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0064430227&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Harold and the Purple Crayon</a>. 3. Your favorite book character: Enjil, the fictional master of numbers who believes that math need not be difficult, in Cecil Balmond's <a href="http://archidose.org/wp/2004/05/14/number-9/">Number 9</a>. 4. Your favorite book title (because you like the sound of it): All That Is Solid Melts into Air by Marshall Berman. 5. A book you could never finish: Proust's multi-volume In Search of Lost Time (I've only finished volume one, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0142437964/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0142437964&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Swann's Way</a>). 6. A book you will never start: William T. Vollmann's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060548193/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0060548193&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Rising Up and Rising Down: Some Thoughts on Violence, Freedom and Urgent Means</a>, be it the 750-page or 3,300-page versions. 7. If for some reason it turned out that you could save one and only one book from among those you own, which would it be: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0156453800/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0156453800&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Invisible Cities</a> by Italo Calvino; not a book I return to as often as I should, but one I would have a hard time getting tired of if I had no other books around. 8. A book you should have read but haven’t: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0813513898/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0813513898&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Loft Living: Culture and Capital in Urban Change</a> by Sharon Zukin (see #16). 9. The best “book as object” you own (how it looks over what it says): Herbert Muschamp's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0262131102/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0262131102&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">File Under Architecture</a>. I bought this book at a used bookstore recently, and while I didn't find it as enjoyable as when I first read it a decade-and-a-half ago as a library book, the <a href="http://observatory.designobserver.com/entry.html?entry=6037">cardboard cover</a>, brown paper, Courier text and notes (in various fonts) in the margins make for a lo-fi yet beautiful book. 10. Your reading speed: very slow, slow, moderate, fast, very fast: It varies, depending on the book, so let's say moderate. 11. While you read, are you a note-taker? If yes, where do you record your notes: Sometimes, especially if I'm going reviewing the book for a publication. These notes used to happen in a special journal (that I just rediscovered, so I'll resume using it), but sometimes I use whatever journal I have handy or even the bookmark I'm using at the time – never on the pages of a book. 12. Your most idiosyncratic reading habit: Having to be at a stopping point – end of a chapter, break in the middle of a chapter, etc. – when I'm done reading, be it when getting off the train on the way to work, at the end of lunch, or before bed. 13. The most expensive book you’ve ever bought (and, if you can remember, the price): I've bought a couple used books that were priced just over $100 –  <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0262200066/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0262200066&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Ise: Prototype of Japanese Architecture</a> by Kenzo Tange and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0817660992/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0817660992&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Peter Zumthor Works: Buildings and Projects, 1979-1997</a> – but cumulatively I paid $40 for those, since I was trading in other books on both occasions. 14. If you could be any author: John McPhee; he makes any subject accessible and fascinating. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0374522596/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0374522596&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">The Control of Nature</a> is a favorite. 15. If you are what you read, the book that best says who you are: <a href="http://www.archidose.org/books/simmons.html">Interpreting Nature: Cultural Constructions of the Environment</a> by I. G. Simmons, not for the subject, but because it's an eclectic grab-bag of interests and influences, and explores the interactions of various disciplines; it's the antithesis of specialized knowledge, something I appreciate and strive for (even if it doesn't come across on this blog or elsewhere). 16. Your favorite writer of the gender opposite yours: Sharon Zukin. 17. The last book you bought: <a href="http://cooper.edu/architecture/publications/constructed-thought">Solitary Travelers</a>, a slender, two-volume book in a slipcase documenting the work of visiting scholars at the Cooper Union School of Architecture in 1977. 18. Your favorite place to purchase books: Used bookstores – rather, good used bookstores, where the selection is eclectic but not overpriced. The last book I bought (previous question) was found at a basement used bookstore (below a library, to boot). Like others in my library, it's a book I never would have known about, or purchased, if I limited myself to new bookstores and online marketplaces. 19. The book you are currently reading: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/906450749X/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=906450749X&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Deventer</a> by Matthew Stadler. It could be described as "narrative nonfiction," about the closest I get to fiction. 20. The book you will read next: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/3791345222/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=3791345222&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Crossover</a> by Cecil Balmond. 21. The current location of the book you will read next: On the shelf next to my chair at home. 22. Your favorite format for books: paper or pixels: Paper for two reasons: If I have a "book" in digital format, it ends up getting lost amongst all of the other data on my laptop or iPad; paper books can be located near at hand (see previous question), where they won't be forgotten. And because reading a book is like "taking a break" from looking at pixels the rest of the day; it is a breather from distractions and work in the digital realm. 23. If you could have written any book: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1873200137/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1873200137&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City</a> by Ian Lambot and Greg Girard, for that would mean I would have experienced <a href="http://www.archidose.org/KWC/">KWC</a> before its demolition – not to mention the place is beautifully and thoroughly documented in the book. 24. A book that was particularly meaningful to, or highly recommended by, an acquaintance of yours: John Updike's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0878465774/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0878465774&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Just Looking: Essays on Art</a>, recommended by architect Ann Beha. I've never read Updike's fiction, but his takes on art tell me that interests and expression need not be limited to categories or genres. 25. If you have the chance to plan it, the last book you’ll read: George Perec's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1567923739/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1567923739&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Life A User's Manual</a>. This is a book I started a few years ago, but circumstances kept me from finishing it, reading only Part 1 of 6. There is something fitting about a last book being one that focuses on the intricate and wondrous puzzle-like details of a singular moment in time. And it would be good to end with a novel.

In the first six months with pot legal in the state, 745 drivers stopped by police tested positive for the drug’s psychoactive ingredient, THC, in their blood, the data show. Over half of those were over the state’s new legal limit of 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood. By contrast, in each of the last two full years, about 1,000 drivers who were pulled over tested positive for THC. The increase comes despite the fact that recreational-use pot stores will not open in Washington state until next year. Washington State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins said the findings, while preliminary, indicate more people may be driving impaired than was the case before Washington and Colorado in January became the first states to legalize recreational use of the drug. Some 20 states and the District of Columbia allow medical marijuana use. Calkins said that, in the first half of the year, the overall number of people pulled over by the State Patrol on suspicion of driving under the influence, whether of alcohol or drugs, remained roughly on par with figures from the last two years. The State Patrol arrests about 20,000 people a year on suspicion of impaired driving. A similar number of arrests are made by other police agencies around the state. Whether people are driving under the influence of pot, alcohol or prescription drugs, Calkins said, “It all comes back to a bad decision to drive while impaired.” Kevin Sabet, co-founder of Project Smart Approaches to Marijuana, a group that opposes its widespread use, said the results are troubling but not surprising. “People are getting the impression that marijuana use is okay,” he said. “Even before one recreational store opens in Washington, we are already seeing the effects.” Douglas Hiatt, a Seattle-based criminal defense lawyer and marijuana advocate, said the state’s new “stoned driving” standard wrongly encourages police to pull over more drivers on suspicion of marijuana use. <h2>Toymaker Goldieblocks fights copyright infringement claim</h2> <div class="body"> The toy company behind the viral advertisement that used a parody of the song “Girls” to mock stereotyped toys for young women has filed a lawsuit fighting copyright infringement claims by the Beastie Boys. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goldieblox filed their suit in California federal court on Thursday seeking a declaratory judgment that the video falls within fair use. GoldiBlox, which makes engineering and construction toys targeted to girls, sparked widespread discussion about gender stereotyping in children’s toys when it posted the video on Monday. The ad features three young girls building an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine while singing the Beastie Boys’ 1986 hit with the lyrics changed to express their dissatisfaction with conventional girls’ toys.  See Where ‘Licensed to Ill’ Ranks Among the 100 Best Debut Album of All Time “You think you know what we want – girls/ Pink and pretty it’s girls/ Just like the fifties it’s girls/ You like to buy us pink toys/ And everything else is for boys.” The video has been viewed more than seven and a half million times on YouTube.  GoldieBlox claims in the lawsuit that the Beastie Boys have threatened the company with copyright infringement. “Lawyers for the Beastie Boys claim that the GoldieBlox Girls Parody Video is a copyright infringement, is not a fair use and that GoldieBlox’s unauthorized use of the Beastie Boys intellectual property is a ‘big problem’ that has a ‘very significant impact.’” The lawsuit makes the argument that its revision of the original sexist lyrics constitutes a case of fair use. “In the lyrics of the Beastie Boys’ song entitled Girls, girls are limited (at best) to household chores, and are presented as useful only to the extent they fulfill the wishes of the male subjects,” the suit says. “GoldieBlox created its parody video with specific goals to make fun of the Beastie Boys song, and to further the company’s goal to break down gender stereotypes and to encourage young girls to engage in activities that challenge their intellect, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The GoldieBlox Girls Parody Video has gone viral on the Internet and has been recognized by the press and the public as a parody and criticism of the original song.” But whatever GoldieBlox’s social intent was beyond selling their products, Adam Yauch’s will specifically prohibited the use of his music in advertisements after his death. (It's the only way to be sure.) According to new documents provided by the National Security Agency's favorite foe, former employee-turned-whistleblower Edward Snowden, Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad is reporting that the NSA has infected more than 50,000 computer networks with malware in a process known as 'Computer Network Exploitation.' The process itself is nothing new; The Washington Post reported on these exploits in late August of this year. These 'implants,' as they're known in NSA terms, are deployed by a department within the agency known as TAO, or 'Tailored Access Operations.' Software engineers within TAO allegedly break into various routers, switches, and firewalls – to name a few devices – in an effort to compromise networks and, thus, gain access to the data being transmitted by the devices connecting up to them. As of 2008, TAO was allegedly able to deploy approximately 21,252 of these implants, and it was estimated that as many as 85,000 or so could be deployed by the end of 2013. Since the numbers NRC Handelsblad is reporting are based on a mid-2012 count, it's certainly possible that the NSA has been able to achieve its goal. 'The malware can be controlled remotely and be turned on and off at will. The 'implants' act as digital 'sleeper cells' that can be activated with a single push of a button,' describes reporters Floor Boon, Steven Derix, and Huib Modderkolk. However, if you're thinking of some kind of Mission Impossible-like setup whereby a team of hackers in a room somewhere are launching pretty, graphical attacks at enemy networks — something that could be straight out of the Uplink game as well, we suppose — you'd be a bit mistaken. As described by NRC Handelsblad, the British intelligence agency 'Government Communications Headquarters,' or GCHQ, performed a similar bit of network infiltration within Belgacom, a telecommunications provider in Belgium. To hack its way into the network, however, the agency employed fake LinkedIn pages and Slashdot websites to ensnare employees within the company's security and maintenance divisions and dump malware on their systems. 'In the case of Belgacom, the GCHQ used a sophisticated variant of the man-in-the-middle attack, known as a 'quantum insert', which Der Spiegel says could only be performed by a spy agency that's able to insert its own boxes into the web. This way, when the target tries to access LinkedIn, GCHQ can serve them a spoofed version of the website instead of the real LinkedIn page,' described SiliconAngle. </div>

It's the first non-sanction year in which the Gators (4-7) have not gone to a bowl since an 0-10-1 season in 1979. Florida extended its losing streak to six consecutive games - the longest streak since the winless '79 team. Georgia Southern (7-4) accumulated 429 yards on the ground - the fourth-highest rushing total by an opponent in Florida history. Nebraska ran for 524 in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl. It was the first win by the Eagles over a FBS school in 21 tries. Georgia Southern had lost 19 scholarship players to injuries this season. Florida led 10-7 at halftime but was actually saved by Georgia Southern mistakes. The Gators' Frankie Velez hit a 27-yard field goal with 8:34 left in the first quarter for the game's opening points. Velez's 22-yard field and 46-yard TD pass from Mornhinweg to Solomon with 5:41 left in the game tied it back up but the Eagles went 75 yards in five plays to regain the lead at 26-20 with 2:44 to go on Jerick McKinnon's 14-yard run. The extra point was wide right. Florida got to the Georgia Southern 24. A 17-yard pass to Quinton Dunbar got the ball but Mornhinweg threw incomplete on first down. The Gators called time out with 25 seconds left in the game. A pass to Patton moved the ball to the Eagles' 16, two yards shy of a first down with 14 ticks left on the clock. UF then called its final time out. Mornhinweg's pass fell incomplete in the end zone to bring up fourth down with eight seconds remaining and on fourth down the Eagles knocked a pass down inside the Gators' five to end the game.
