New Mini: Bigger, faster, smarter

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/dam/assets/131118085249-mini-cooper-620xa.jpg" width="600"/>BMW unveiled a bigger, faster and better connected version of the iconic Mini hatchback on Monday.<br /><p>The German automaker said it is investing £750 million across its three U.K. manufacturing sites to support the launch.</p><br /><p>Most of that will be spent at a 1,000-robot body shop in Oxford, which is also celebrating 100 years of car making this year.</p><br /><p>The new generation will have a completely new engine and new chassis technology, while staying unmistakeably true to the Mini design tradition.</p><br /><p>It will also make a big leap in the small car market by allowing devices and apps based on Google 's Android and Apple 's iOS integrate with Mini Connected, its version of BMW's iDrive multimedia navigation and entertainment system.</p><br /><p>Related: Corvette named Automobile of the Year</p><br /><p>BMW revived the brand in 2001. Since then, more than 2.4 million Minis have rolled off the assembly line, and nearly 1.9 million have been exported.</p><br /><p>Designed by Alec Issigonis, the original Mini was launched by the British Motor Corporation in 1959, setting new standards for space and driving performance in a small car.</p><br /><p>Related: Best resale value cars</p><br /><p>Production of the original version continued under various owners until 2000. But it has been looking for ways to limit his power.</p> <p>At an afternoon meeting on Monday, the council was set to vote on a motion that, among other things, would cut Ford’s office budget to that of a normal city councilor, and make the deputy mayor the chair of the cabinet-like executive committee.</p> <p>Ford has vowed to fight the moves in court, but his lawyer, George Rust-D’Eye, said on Monday he will not seek an injunction to stop the council meeting. That does not rule out challenging the decision later.</p> <p>On Friday, the council suspended Ford’s ability to appoint and dismiss the deputy mayor and the heads of council committees. It also granted the deputy mayor, rather than the mayor, special powers to act during emergencies such as natural disasters.</p> <p>A new television show featuring the mayor and his brother, councilor Doug Ford, is set to debut Monday evening on Canada’s right-wing Sun News Network. FBI Blames Federal Hacks On Anonymous Campaign

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://img.deusm.com/informationweek/news.png" width="600"/><img src="http://img.deusm.com/informationweek/schwartz-IWK-125x125.jpg" width="600"/><img src="http://img.deusm.com/informationweek/editor-RSS.png" width="600"/><img src="http://img.deusm.com/informationweek/editor-email.png" width="600"/><img src="http://static.1.rp-api.com/buttons/repostus_bttn_shrt_embed.png" width="600"/><br /><p>A British suspect is accused of attacking numerous government agencies, including the U.S. Army and NASA.</p><br /><p>Attackers with ties to Anonymous have waged a year-long hacking campaign that's successfully exploited numerous US government systems.</p><br /><p>So read an FBI memo, distributed Thursday, which said that the group of attackers gained access to government systems via SQL injection attacks, as well as by exploiting vulnerabilities in outdated versions of the website development platform Adobe ColdFusion, Reuters first reported.</p><br /><p>That group of hackers was allegedly responsible for the July 2013 Department of Energy (DOE) data breach. In the wake of that breach, agency officials reported that attackers had exploited vulnerabilities in an outdated and insecure version of Adobe ColdFusion to obtain personal information -- including names, social security numbers, and dates of birth -- for more than 100,000 past and current federal employees, including dependents and contractors. Attackers also obtained 2,800 employees' bank account numbers.</p><br /><p>According to the FBI memo, however, the DOE was but one of the government agencies that the attackers successfully breached. Indeed, the bureau said that systems run by the U.S. Army, Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Sentencing Commission were likewise breached via ColdFusion vulnerabilities, and suggested that many more agencies may have been likewise compromised.</p><br /><strong>[ What are the new threats? Read Internet Of Things Opens Doors to Attack. ]</strong><br /><p>Related investigations are still underway. 'The majority of the intrusions have not yet been made publicly known,' according to the bureau's memo. 'It is unknown exactly how many systems have been compromised, but it is a widespread problem that should be addressed.'</p><br /><p>Unnamed US government officials told Reuters that the Adobe ColdFusion hack attacks were linked to the case of Lauri Love, 28, who was arrested last month by the UK's National Crime Agency -- Britain's version of the FBI -- following an international investigation that was spearheaded by the US Army's criminal investigation command.</p><br /><p>Love's indictment in New Jersey federal court was announced on October 28 by US attorney Paul Fishman. 'According to the indictment, Lauri Love and conspirators hacked into thousands of networks, including many belonging to the United States military and other government agencies,' said Fishman in a statement. 'As part of their alleged scheme, they stole military data and personal identifying information belonging to servicemen and women. Such conduct endangers the security of our country and is an affront to those who serve.'</p><br /><p>According to the indictment, Love (aka 'nsh,' 'route,' and 'peace') operated from the south of England, and worked with three conspirators -- who investigators haven't named -- operating from Australia and Sweden. Their alleged attacks, which began in October 2012, targeted not only the US Army and NASA, but also the US Missile Defense Agency and the Environmental Protection Agency.</p><br /><p>Love himself allegedly launched 10 different attacks -- two SQL injection attacks and eight ColdFusion hacks -- that resulted in the theft of information pertaining to more than 5,000 servicemen and servicewomen. 'Once inside the compromised networks, Love and his conspirators placed hidden 'shells' or 'back doors' within the networks, which allowed them to return to the compromised computer systems at a later date and steal confidential data,' according to the indictment.</p><br /><p>Prosecutors said the hackers allegedly attempted to mask their online activities by using VPN proxies and the Tor anonymizing network, as well as each cycling through a range of online handles when communicating via IRC chat rooms.</p><br /><p>Love, who hasn't been charged by British authorities, is currently free on bail until February 2014. If convicted of the two counts with which he's been charged -- accessing as well as conspiring to access US government computers without authorization -- he faces up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or up to twice the gross loss incurred by the government as a result of the attacks.</p><br /><p>Some of the attacks ascribed to Love's group, reported Reuters, were publicized by Anonymous supporters as part of Operation Last Resort, which was launched after Internet activist Aaron Swartz committed suicide. The Anonymous campaign sought 'reform of computer crime laws, and the overzealous prosecutors' involved in Swartz's case. At 5 a.m., port drivers took up "Stop this unlawful war on workers signs" and hit the picket lines in a surprise short strike. Teamsters are marching in solidarity with the drivers.<br /><br />Local television, print and radio crews came out to cover the job action. The advisory informs us port truck drivers at three companies are walking off the job for 36 hours to protest Unfair Labor Practices, including harassment, intimidation, and other violations of Federal labor laws. According to advisory:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Striking drivers at two of the companies – <a href="http://www.greenfleetsystems.com/index.htm">Green Fleet Systems</a> and <a href="http://www.americanlogisticsintl.com/">American Logistics International</a> – are bona fide employees of these trucking companies. Region 21 of the National Labor Relations Board has received charges detailing unlawful retaliations against the drivers at these two companies in their efforts to organize a Union with the <a href="http://www.teamster.org/">International Brotherhood of Teamsters</a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pac9.com/">Pac 9 Transportation</a> misclassifies their full-time, exclusive drivers as “independent contractors.” Those drivers are demanding recognition as employees and have suffered harassment and intimidation from Pac 9 in their efforts. Charges for unlawful retaliation are pending before Region 21 of the <a href="http://www.nlrb.gov/">National Labor Relations Board</a>. This is the first time in decades that port truck drivers classified as “independent contractors” have gone on strike. Their efforts are significantly bolstered by the fact that more than 50 Pac 9 drivers, and hundreds of others have filed claims for wage theft with the <a href="http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/">California Labor Commissioner</a>.</blockquote>Josh Eidelson at Salon wrote a terrific story about the <a href="http://www.salon.com/2013/11/18/breaking_truckers_who_haul_for_wal_mart_and_forever_21_plan_surprise_strikes_today/" rel="nofollow">strike</a>, titled, "Truckers who haul for Wal-Mart and Forever 21 plan surprise strikes today." The subhed is even better: "Hundreds of workers will defy vengeful companies and laws that deny they're even employees." Eidelson writes,<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">In labor’s latest challenge to a low-wage economy and a legal system that excludes huge swathes of the workforce, hundreds of non-union Port of Los Angeles truck drivers plan to stage surprise strikes against three companies Monday. The workers transport goods from the port to companies including Costco, Forever 21, Sketchers and Wal-Mart. They allege their companies — Green Fleet Systems, American Logistics International, and Pac 9 — illegally punished workers for organizing and exposing wrongdoing. While drivers striking at GFS and ALI (starting at 5 a.m. PST and 4 p.m. PST respectively) are legally employed by those logistics companies, the workers at the third company, Pac 9, are among the growing ranks of so-called “independent contractors” who legally aren’t employed by anyone at all. They plan to walk (or drive) off the job at 5 p.m. PST Monday. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">“I’m demanding what a worker deserves,” Pac 9 driver Jose Galindo told Salon in Spanish in a pre-strike interview. Like strikes targeting the <a href="http://www.salon.com/2012/10/09/walmart_strikes_spread_to_more_states/">Wal-Mart supply chain</a> and the <a href="http://www.salon.com/2013/08/29/largest_fast_food_strike_ever_today_50_cities_will_be_affected/">fast food industry</a> (also significantly supported by affiliates of the same union federation, Change to Win), the truckers are mounting one-day strikes rather than indefinite ones, and framing their protests as a response to illegal retaliation – two tactics with some potential to maximize public scrutiny on bosses while reducing the ever-present risk that the striking workers lose their jobs. Home builder confidence flat amid rising construction costs

Tech stocks: Pandora, Salesforce earnings this week

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Shares of Salesforce.com are up nearly 2% in pre-market trading, as the company prepares to announce third quarter earnings results after the markets close Monday.</p><br /><p>Last quarter, the cloud computing company reported a 31% bump in revenue to $957 million, while bumping its revenue forecast for the fiscal year to more than $4 billion.</p><br /><p>This week, the company kicks off the Dreamforce software conference in San Francisco. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg are expected to attend.</p><br /><p>On Thursday, Pandora reports third quarter earnings following a strong showing during its last quarter. During that time period, Pandora reported $162 million in revenue and $7.5 million in profit. Loss to Broncos exposes possibly fatal flaw in Chiefs' game

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/dam/assets/131118023909-dwaynebowe-111813-single-image-cut.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>DENVER -- This was, of course, the working assumption all along with these Kansas City Chiefs. We were waiting to see their obvious weakness exploited. The standings said the Chiefs were a 'perfect'' 9-0 entering Sunday night's AFC West showdown against Denver, but everyone knew where their vulnerability was.</p><br /><p>If they get ahead, they're likely going to stay ahead. But if they fall behind, well, Sunday night at Sports Authority Field told the sad story on that front.</p><br /><p>The Chiefs have many strengths, but they simply aren't made to play catch-up ball, or deal with a deficit of any magnitude. The first opponent to put them into a significant hole was going to beat them, and that eventuality came to pass against Denver, which got out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead and was never truly in danger of losing to the NFL's last remaining unbeaten team.</p><br /><p>The 1972 Dolphins might be celebrating with their ritual champagne -- their 17-0 perfect season is still a singular event -- but it was Kansas City that learned a sobering truth about itself against Denver.</p><br /><p>Make no mistake, the Broncos' 27-17 victory over Kansas City did not represent Denver's best punch -- far from it. The Chiefs still couldn't take it. Kansas City has thrived by winning low-scoring games this season, and this wasn't even low-scoring enough for its purposes. The Broncos (9-1) at one point built a 14-point advantage over the Chiefs, and with the way K.C. is built to win, 14-point deficits are very tall mountains to climb.</p><br /><p>'They got us today,'' said Chiefs first-year head coach Andy Reid, experiencing defeat for the first time since his last game in Philadelphia, last Dec. 30. 'To start with, when you've got the opportunity to score touchdowns against this team, you've got to score touchdowns and not kick field goals. I thought out defense gave us (a chance). But we've got to take full advantage of that.''</p><br /><p>The Chiefs (9-1) didn't fail miserably in this big-stage setting, but they did fail. And the skeptics will say this is what happens when Reid's team isn't facing a backup quarterback, as it seemed to do so often over the course of its somewhat charmed season. Or they will say that this is what happens when the Chiefs' running game doesn't dominate, their pass rush doesn't overwhelm, and their game-manager quarterback ( Alex Smith) doesn't have a lead to preserve and protect. This game illustrated that Kansas City's margin of error is relatively small on offense, and it can't survive against good teams when it turns the ball over in the red zone (as it did on fullback Anthony Sherman's fumble at Denver's 16-yard line in the first quarter), or settles for chip-shot field goals (a 20-yarder by Ryan Succop in the second quarter) instead of touchdowns.</p><br /><p>The Chiefs were never really out of this game, but in some ways, it felt as if they were never really in it, either. That's the problem with a team that isn't equipped or constructed to score quickly or play from behind. A two-score game feels like it's out of reach, and a double-digit deficit seems like it carries the weight of a much larger gap.</p><br /><p>Coming into the Denver game, the Chiefs hadn't faced any deficit larger than seven points this season. That makes sense for a team that tied an NFL record of not allowing more than 17 points in any of its first nine game. The Chiefs have played their share of tight games, but they haven't faced the firepower that the Broncos can throw at you, and the challenge Sunday night was to keep up with a Denver team on a record scoring pace.</p><br /><p>'Well, not good enough,'' said Smith, when asked how he felt this team fared playing from substantially behind for the first time this season. 'I felt like we put ourselves in holes and didn't start fast enough in the first quarter. We got behind and they got us one dimensional. When they get up a couple scores, you have to answer. We weren't able to get it done tonight. In the third quarter, we had a couple chances to make that game tight, and we couldn't get it done. We hurt ourselves with penalties and with a turnover in the red zone.''</p><br /><p>This time, the Chiefs' defense did not ride to the rescue of the less-than-explosive Kansas City offense, as it did in Week 9 at Buffalo, when a pair of second-half defensive touchdowns helped the Chiefs out-last the Bills. Kansas City came into the Denver game leading the NFL in sacks with 36, but never laid a hand on banged-up Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Denver's 37-year-old QB threw 40 passes, completing 24 for 323 yards and a touchdown, but never had to endure any more pounding on his sore right ankle, on which he wore a brace that was visible through his sock.</p><br /><p>Zero hits on Manning had to be this game's most shocking headline, but the Broncos' offensive line did yeoman work, Manning moved away from pressure in the pocket adeptly, and the Chiefs' pass rush has been a bit slacking of late. After getting to opposing quarterbacks 35 times in the season's first seven games, K.C. has just one sack in its past three games, and its good fortune of facing quarterbacks named Gabbert, Fitzpatrick, Keenum, Pryor, Campbell and Tuel ended abruptly when it stepped up in weight class against the likes of Manning -- gimpy or not.</p><br /><p>'I thought he did a good job of getting the ball out fast, and I thought he worked the pocket pretty well,'' Reid said. 'There were times when we had pressure and you saw him slide and throw opposite (side), which isn't an easy thing to do. He's a pretty good quarterback. He did that and got away with a couple that most guys wouldn't be able to get away with.''</p><br /><p>Smith and the Chiefs' passing offense tried to take their shots down the field at times, but they couldn't produce the chunks of yardage needed to keep up with the Broncos. Smith's longest completion went for 26 yards, to receiver Dwayne Bowe, and his 21-of-45 passing night for 230 yards, to go with three sacks and two touchdowns, wasn't enough to hang with Manning. It was two teams bringing different kinds of weapons to the same fight, and the results were predictable.</p><br /><p>Denver scored 10 more points than Kansas City had allowed all season, and the 17 points the Chiefs scored normally would have won most of their games. But not this one. Not with the Broncos throwing for 323 yards, or 50 more than K.C. had given up to any opponent. Not with running back Jamaal Charles totaling a good but not great 78 yards rushing on 16 carries. And not with the Chiefs committing nine penalties for 53 yards.</p><br /><p>'It's terrible. It's not fun,'' said Smith, of losing, after bringing a starting record of 28-5-1 since the beginning of 2011 into the game. 'As great as it is to win, it's that lousy when you lose, especially in a division game, Sunday Night Football. It's a big game and a big environment. To come here and come up short hurts and stings. But it's good in some ways. We have to find a way to deal with it. How many teams have ever gone undefeated given the history of football? We have to find a way to get better and prepare for next week. We see them again in two weeks, but we have to prepare for another big division game next week against San Diego. These games keep getting bigger.''</p><br /><p>That they do, and the question the Chiefs left unanswered by this game is whether they will be able to elevate their play as the stakes rise? The thinking was that Kansas City could find a silver lining for the rematch in two weeks even with a loss Sunday night, providing they roughed up Manning a little bit and maybe got him to aggravate his tender ankles, or at the very least proved they could stay on the field and slug it out with the high-scoring Broncos. But they seemingly accomplished neither of those goals, and that is sure to affect how the Chiefs approach the rematch in Arrowhead in Week 13.</p><br /><p>The Chiefs found out Sunday that Denver can beat them playing Kansas City's type of game more readily than they can match the Broncos' style of play. For now, the doubts about the Chiefs' vulnerabilities didn't get erased, they only got accentuated. Maybe the story will be different in two weeks. But maybe the AFC West shifted for good here with this outcome, as our assumptions about Kansas City's offensive limitations proved true.</p><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://images.ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-17-at-4.57.03-PM1.png" width="600"/><br /><p>In the latest edition of quarterback-receiver arguments on Texas-based NFL teams, embattled Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub was involved in a shouting match with All-Pro wide receiver Andre Johnson at the end of the team's 28-23 loss to the Oakland Raiders.</p><br /><p>The Texans had a third-and-1 from the Oakland two-yard-line with 1:28 remaining, but failed to get the go-ahead touchdown when Schaub missed Johnson, who was covered by multiple Raiders defenders, on a fourth-down throw into the end zone.</p><br /><p>When the offense came off the field, Schaub and Johnson were seen jawing at each other until people stepped in to separate the teammates. Johnson turned around and walked off the field while the Raiders were kneeling down to kill the clock.</p><br /><img src="http://images.ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/2013-11-1713_44_13.gif" width="600"/><br /><p>According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Johnson was also seen getting frustrated with Schaub late in the fourth quarter when the QB didn't see him open in the secondary.</p><br /><p>Schaub, the Texans starter who was injured last month, replaced Sunday's starter Case Keenum late in the third quarter. Dow Futures Point to a Fresh All

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Daily Forex Technicals | Written by Forex.com |</p><br /><p>US stock index futures point towards a higher open on Wall Street with both the Dow and S&P 500 set to hit fresh all-time highs. Against the backdrop of sluggish growth and low inflation, the world's major central banks maintain their ultra-accommodative stance of monetary policy. This has been and will remain the major theme for the markets for the foreseeable future. Indeed, the ECB recently trimmed interest rates to just 0.25%, while comments from the Federal Reserve Chairperson-elect Janet Yellen last week suggests the Fed is no rush to reduce the pace of their asset purchases. Thus the equity markets remain in a strong uptrend, with shallow pullbacks.</p><br /><p>At the time of this writing, the Dow is hovering around 16000. As well as a psychological mark, this level corresponds with the 127.2% Fibonacci extension of the sell-off from 15720 to 14715 we saw between September and October. On top of this, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently at overbought levels of above 70. It is therefore possible that we could see some profit-taking, which could cause a healthy pullback in this strong uptrend. However should this not come to fruition then I would interpret it as an indication that the rally is extremely strong and that it has further room to the upside. In this scenario, the Dow, over the next couple of weeks or so, could potentially rise to 16340/5, i.e. the 161.8% Fibonacci level, before making its next move.</p><br /><img src="http://www.actionforex.com/images/stories/contributors/forexcom/2013111861.gif" width="600"/></div>

Nvidia Unleashes Tesla K40, Joins IBM on Future HPC Projects

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://www4.pcmag.com/media/images/407798-nvidia-tesla-k40.jpg?thumb=y" width="600"/><br /><p>Nvidia on Monday announced the availability of its fastest-ever GPU accelerator for supercomputing and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.</p><br /><p>The Tesla K40 GPU accelerator has double the memory of the Tesla K20X, until now Nvidia's top GPU accelerator, and delivers a 40 percent performance boost over its predecessor.</p><br /><p>'GPU accelerators have gone mainstream in the HPC and supercomputing industries, enabling engineers and researchers to consistently drive innovation and scientific discovery,' Sumit Gupta, general manager of Tesla Accelerated Computing products at Nvidia, said in a statement. 'With the breakthrough performance and higher memory capacity of the Tesla K40 GPU, enterprise customers can quickly crunch through massive volumes of data generated by their big data analytics applications.'</p><br /><p>The Tesla K40 is based on Nvidia's Kepler graphics processing architecture and sports 2,880 GPU cores supporting the graphics chip maker's CUDA parallel programming language. The most powerful graphics platform Nvidia has built to date has a whopping 12GB of GDDR5 memory, supports the PCIe 3.0 interconnect, and uses the company's Dynamic Parallelism technology to 'enable GPU threads to dynamically spawn new threads, enabling users to quickly and easily crunch through adaptive and dynamic data structures.'</p><br /><p>The Tesla K40 also features a technology familiar to CPU users, the ability to throttle up cores with converted power headroom. Called Nvidia GPU Boost, this user-controlled performance enhancer can 'unlock the untapped performance of a broad range of applications,' according to Nvidia.</p><br /><p>The new GPU accelerator is now available but isn't likely to be implemented in working supercomputing and HPC systems for a couple of months. Many of the systems listed on the new Top500 supercomputer list released this week already use the Tesla K20X accelerator.</p><br /><p>One of the first Nvidia partners to deploy the Tesla K40 will be the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas at Austin, which is building a remote visualization and data analysis system called 'Maverick,' scheduled to go online in January.</p><br /><p>'The Tesla K40 GPU accelerators will help researchers crunch through massive volumes of big data and gain new insights through large-scale, sophisticated visualizations. With Nvidia GPUs, Maverick will provide researchers powerful interactive capabilities to advance their most complex scientific challenges,' said Kelly Gaither, director of Visualization at TACC.</p><br /><p>Teaming Up With Big Blue Meanwhile, Nvidia has also announced a long-term collaboration with IBM to 'supercharge the corporate data center' with the development of GPU-accelerated enterprise software applications run on systems using IBM's Power processors.</p><br /><p>Nvidia called the partnership the initial step in bringing GPU accelerator technology 'beyond the realm of supercomputing and into the heart of enterprise-scale data centers' for the first time.</p><br /><p>Along with Google, Nvidia was one of the biggest names to sign on with IBM's new OpenPOWER Consortium in August, an effort by the computing giant to rekindle the flagging fortunes of its once-dominant processor architecture through licensing and allowing more third-party insight into the IP than ever before.</p><br /><p>'This partnership will bring supercomputer performance to the corporate data center, expanding the use of GPU accelerators well beyond the traditional supercomputing and technical computing markets,' Ian Buck, vice president of Accelerated Computing at Nvidia, said in a statement.</p><br /><p>'It will also provide existing supercomputing and high-performance computing customers with new choices and technologies to build powerful, energy-efficient systems that drive innovation and scientific discovery.'</p><br /></div>
