All I can say is I’d love to ride in that elevator!”</p> <p>Gold has been on quite a ride lately: Last June, the Berlin native released the compilation LP <em>Axtone Presents Thomas Gold</em>. Well, I decided to not wait 2 weeks to weigh in!!!  I am pretty excited about the results!!!!   <br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/yzc4vy9kshY" width="420"></iframe><br /><br />WOW!!! So 13 pounds to go and I will lose 50 pounds!! 7 pounds away from going from the 250 bracket on the doctors scale to the 200 bracket. THAT will totally be a video I do from their office because that is a moment. The old saying that behind every successful man is a woman comes to mind but, in the case of politics, behind every successful candidate is a successful campaign manager and consultant.<br /><br />Enter 32-year-old Richard Crouse, the man behind the candidates, who has worked numerous campaigns and served as political director of the Republican Party of Virginia over the past decade. He doesn't just talk the talk ... he walks the walk of successfully getting Republicans elected.<br /><br />Richard's resume is long, filled with the familiar names of those currently serving in office. He was part of the push in 2008 that recruited candidates and picked up enough seats to make Republicans the majority party in the Virginia House of Delegates. In 2009, during the epic historic Republican sweep of McDonnell-Bolling-Cuccinelli in the top three leadership spots, Richard was all over the state helping in the effort that brought in more GOP House seats as well as governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general. <br /><br />In 2010, Richard was part of the effort to defeat three Democratic congressmen (Boucher, Perriello, Nye) to put in Republican representatives Hurt, Griffith, and Rigell. He worked on special elections to get Republicans elected (Greg Habeeb, Tony Wilt, Jeff McWaters, Bill Stanley). Working with Mike Thomas in 2012, he served as political director for former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen.<br /><br />Richard's latest success is <a href="http://www.lesadams.org/" target="_blank">Les Adams</a>, one of 2013's newest Republicans elected to the House of Delegates. A sixth-generation native of Southside Virginia and Liberty University graduate, Les won the 16th House District seat in Pittsylvania County on Election Day with 65 percent of the vote.<br /><br />The campaign began earlier in the year when Delegate Don Merricks announced his retirement. With no money and considered the underdog against a well-known candidate, Les pulled Richard on board his campaign and they went to work. Together they raised a war chest to get Les elected, winning the primary on June 10, 2013, with an overwhelming 81 percent of the vote to become the Republican candidate in a solid red district.<br /><br />On election day they sealed the deal when Les won against his Democratic opponent. In January, he will be heading to Richmond with the freshman class for the 2014 Virginia General Assembly session. Congratulations to both Les and Richard for a job well done.

Good gracious y'all!! Thank you so much for your response to the <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2013/11/one-room-challenge-week-6-aka-reveal.html" target="_blank">One Room Challenge</a>. Not only am I grateful for all of you, but I had such a great time looking thru all of the fabulous rooms of the other ladies as well as all the amazing linking party participants.  There is some serious talent out there, and I was thrilled to be apart of it. In an interview on <i>Sky News</i>, the racing driver Amanda Stretton and robotics specialist Emma Byrne stated that this innovation could have a profound influence on the future direction of traffic, and seemed broadly sympathetic to it.</p> <p>I wish I could share their enthusiasm. Of course, the improvement of public transport – or indeed, the actual creation of a public transport system, considering the existing ‘public transport’ is all owned privately – would be an excellent thing, I am by no stretch of the imagination attached to the idea of cars as a concept or status symbol. But we should be extremely weary about creating a matrix-like control grid where all vehicles are tracked and everything drives itself.</p> <p>Firstly, before going into the deeper issues, there must surely be questions over safety here. It’s perfectly reasonable to argue that the existing road network is far from safe, and this is naturally completely correct. Thousands of people die on the roads every year, this cannot be contested. But everyone that currently applies for a driving licence and goes out onto the road knows these dangers, or would have to be incredibly ignorant not to be aware of them.</p> <p>The potential for accidents to occur due to computer and mechanisation errors is completely different. We all accept driver error as an in-built risk of driving a vehicle. Would people really accept being put at risk due to errors by artificial intelligence? I’m quite sure that the people proposing this will argue that it’s completely failsafe, no such errors can occur, and no accidents are possible. This is usual sort of rhetoric that we hear in these cases, and it always turns out to be baseless.</p> <p>Perhaps a more important issue though is what this says about the future of our cities and transportation within them. I first encountered the concept of such a transport network in a series of videos by an organisation called ‘Forum for the Future’. Their presentation, ‘Megacities on the Move’ depicted a future which I can only reasonably describe as dystopian and Orwellian. Within one of the videos, the female narrator cheerily talks of her commute, all controlled by computer, as being a case of “switch(ing) off her brain, and going to work”. Not really the vision of a society that I’m overly keen on. There are already EU plans to greatly reduce the amount of traffic in city centres, though, and such technology would doubtless receive a bureaucratic thumbs up.</p> <p>The increasing sophistication and increased usage of technology in our society is absolutely inevitable. <div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Paul Sandle</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>LONDON (Reuters) – London-listed Shire is buying ViroPharma for $ 4.2 billion, attracted by a pipeline of potentially lucrative drugs to treat rare diseases, a growing trend as drugs companies lose revenues from patent expires on conventional treatments.</p> <p>Several companies including France’s Sanofi, according to reports, were interested in ViroPharma, which makes Cinryze for the treatment of immune disorder hereditary angioedema.</p> <p>Treatments for such rare disorders can command huge prices, running into hundreds of thousands of dollars a year per patient.</p> <p>Shire said on Monday it had agreed to pay $ 50 a share in cash for U.S. biopharmaceutical ViroPharma, a 27 percent premium on Friday’s closing price. Shares in the group spiked nearly 30 percent in September on bid speculation.</p> <p>Though some investors have raised concerns about the sustainability of the business model for rare disease drugs, healthcare providers have so far generally accepted the high costs, given the transforming effects of the medicines and the very small number of patients who need them.</p> <p>The value of biological drugs to treat rare disease was crystallized in 2011 when Sanofi paid more than $ 20 billion to buy Genzyme.</p> <p>Rare diseases are already an important part of Shire’s portfolio, including drugs to treat Gaucher’s disease and Fabry disease, and it said buying Exton, Pennsylvania-based ViroPharma would create a $ 2 billion a year unit, accounting for 40 percent of Shire’s total revenue.</p> <p>Shire Chief Executive Flemming Ornskov said the deal was “entirely consistent with our clear strategic objective of strengthening our rare disease portfolio”.</p> <p>Shares in Shire, already at record highs in recent weeks after the group raised 2013 earnings guidance, reached a new peak of 2,899 pence. They were trading up 3.6 percent at 2,898 pence by 0951 GMT. [ID:nL5N0IE2MB]</p> <p>Analyst Savvas Neophytou at Panmure Gordon, who has a “buy” rating on Shire, said the deal was “clearly at an eye-watering multiple” of 7.6 times enterprise value over revenues, but it was strategically very sound.</p> <p>“Given the company’s growth characteristics, a premium valuation is warranted in our view,” he said.</p> <p>NO PRESSURE</p> <p>Ornskov declined to comment on competition to clinch a deal, but he said he was under no pressure and the price agreed was good for both sets of shareholders.</p> <p>He said Cinryze, ViroPharma’s leading product, would complement Shire’s Firazyr on-demand treatment for acute attacks for hereditary angioedema, a rare genetic disease characterized by sudden attacks of swelling of the skin or the mucous membranes, which can be disfiguring, painful and life-threatening in some circumstances.</p> <p>“Hereditary angioedema is a devastating rare disease that affects about 18,000 patients in the U.S. and EU,” he told reporters on Monday.</p> <p>“We will be able to better serve them by long-term prophylactic prevention with Cinryze and on-demand prevention of acute attacks with Firazyr.” Firazyr is one of Shire’s fastest growing drugs.</p> <p>Shire, whose biggest selling drug is hyperactivity blockbuster Vyvanse, has largely grown by buying up promising companies and licensing drugs rather than building its portfolio from first-stage research.</p> <p>Ornskov said mergers and acquisition and in-licensing was in Shire’s DNA: “Our focus on this does not stop as a result of today’s transaction.”</p> <p>ViroPharma is forecast to have annual revenues this year of $ 445-465 million, up from $ 428 million in 2012. The bulk of revenues this year, some $ 395-405 million, is expected to come from Cinryze sales in the United States. And it celebrates the legend of Doctor Who. The question was: what was the most important thing that happened to the Doctor, the day the Doctor won't forget. It will redefine him."</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The episode is particularly exciting in that it sees the return of David Tennant and Billie Piper as the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">"David and Matt are magic together," says Moffat. “The Doctor is the Doctor. He is one man who has different phases and faces. He is the same man inside - the same man at different stages. "I had to go and get a couple of DVDs.  It just sort of came back. It's something about its energy. It's not naturalistic like most other things are. It's the tone that's unlike anything else. That's what people find when they guest on it. Well it does when you’re looking at renders this good. Thanks to Marti Hajek & Steve Hemmerstoffer for this hyper realistic look at what could be in Apple’s future.</p> <p>One of the great things about these renders it that they aren’t too far fetched. They’ve taken what Apple has done in the past and applied it to the next step. Namely it’s thinner, has less bezel, and does away with yet another button. When we say it like that it almost sounds like the renders would be easy – but to create them at this quality we’ve got nothing but respect for these guys.</p> <p>While the form of the handset is the same as the iPhone 5S the screen would be a little larger as it’s grown as the bezel has shrunk. A bit like Samsung did with the Galaxy S3 to Galaxy S4 jump. And in another Android inspired move the home button has also been removed. Presumably Apple would need to introduce some sort of swipe system to replace this. While it looks great and we’d love to see it we can’t imagine Apple doing it soon after investing a lot in its Touch ID scanner just recently.</p> <p>So what do you think? It’s not a huge leap forward but we’ve come to expect that from Apple of late. It is beautiful though, something Apple does well.
