This program is to pair a new administrator with one that has more experience. This is not meant to be the typical “mentor-mentee” relationship, but the hope is that through active sharing, each administrator will be help to learn from each other, and others can learn from all of the shared experiences. <br /><br /><div dir="ltr"><strong>Program Design</strong></div><div dir="ltr">This program is meant to last for the 2013-2014 school year (typically August to June) although it is open to administrators from all over the world. Each person that is a “mentor” will be paired with three (maximum) “mentees” that they will be able to connect through virtual means (email, twitter, videochat, etc.) to help them develop their leadership. There will also be an online sessions (once a month) that will help to share ideas for learning and leading with guest speakers. All of these talks will be archived and shared if they do not fit into your regular schedule. This is more than likely to be done through the use of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://https//plus.google.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Google+">Google Hangout</a>.</div><div dir="ltr"><br /></div><div dir="ltr">All of the standards that we will be focusing on will be based on the <a href="http://education.alberta.ca/media/949129/principal-quality-practice-guideline-english-12feb09.pdf">Alberta Principal Quality Standard</a>. Managing School Operations and Resources</div><div dir="ltr">7. Understanding and Responding to the Larger Societal Context</div></blockquote>Although these “standards” were created within the province of Alberta, Canada, they are not unique to other areas of the world. The focus will be to continuously look at these standards and how they look in schools currently. The hope, through open group forums and mentoring, is to look at all facets of leadership that take place within schools. <br /><br /><div dir="ltr">This should NOT replace mentorship within your own organization, but is to give you an outsider perspective to leadership that you may not be receiving. It would be beneficial as a new leader to have mentorship within your own school/district.</div><div dir="ltr"><br /></div><div dir="ltr"><strong>Program Requirements</strong></div><div dir="ltr">Each “mentee” will be required to keep an open blog to share their learning openly with the world, while also helping to create a digital portfolio of their work. Each “mentor” that takes part in the program should already have a blog to model what we are expecting from the people that they are mentoring. It will also be required that participants have a Twitter account that they will use to actively engage and share their learning with others in the program through the <a href="https://twitter.com/search/realtime?q=%23savmp&src=typd">#SAVMP</a> Twitter hashtag.</div><div dir="ltr"><br /></div><div dir="ltr">Since the program is free, the expectation to share through a blog and Twitter is crucial. Mentors should have a minimum of three years in administration. This is not limited to Principals, but we encourage Assistant Principals (Vice, Associate, etc.) to apply as well.</div><div dir="ltr"><br /></div><div dir="ltr"><strong>Application Process</strong></div><div dir="ltr">To apply for this program, you will need to simply fill out the form below and indicate whether you want to be a “mentor” or “mentee”. Although there is a lot of interest to do both, you will have to choose one role.</div><div dir="ltr"><br /></div><div dir="ltr">Once applications are received, we will be looking to pair people with one another that are in the same continent. The hope is to get an outsider perspective on education and learn from a variety of people and viewpoints. We are hoping to accept all of those that apply, but it is crucial that we keep the “mentor-mentee” ratio no higher than 1:3.</div><div dir="ltr"><br /></div><div dir="ltr">Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Location will also be considered to try to pair up applicants to someone in a relatively close time zone. Happy Monday (she says with a forced smile that comes after a long holiday weekend)! Thanks everyone for the kind words about the CNN feature and my birthday. 'Merica and I had one great birthday celebration. Here is hoping your weekend was filled with summer fun.<br /><br />I'm going to diverge from design today to give y'all an update on the <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2013/06/potty-time.html" target="_blank">potty training front</a> and share some successes and some rather stinky failures. If you don't want to hear about the bodily movements of a toddler, I totally understand and I'll talk with you on Wednesday. For the rest of you, let's chat.<br /><br />As I <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2013/06/potty-time.html" target="_blank">said before</a>, I changed up my tactics a bit this time around to accommodate for my independent Eve. I read blogs, books, articles, and talked to anyone and everyone to find out what worked for them. And from all of that research the only thing I learned is that there is no magic potion. For every person who said, "Blank worked really well for my child", I had someone else who said, "Don't do blank, it didn't work for my child". Only you know your child - their temperaments and sticking points - so don't follow one theory or method, but instead follow your gut and go with the flow (I couldn't <i>not</i> have a pun).<br /><br />So with that in mind, I'm not going to give a tutorial or the 10 best tips etc, because I don't think this is something that can be wrapped up that easily. I'm simply sharing what we did. Take it as advice or just a funny antidote. So for several weeks before we officially started training I left the door open while Amelia went to the bathroom (I know, eww). Eve would hang out in there, sometimes watching and sometimes just playing in the sink. But she noticed.<br /><br /><b>Take your pants off</b>. <br />We took the standard trip to Target where Eve got to pick out any underwear she wanted (Dora) and any candy she wanted (Peanut Butter M&M's). But for the first few days she had no underwear on at all and she's worn only dresses. This saves valuable seconds between the 'I have to go' and the actual...going. We go all the way in this house. It makes for a messy few days but I think its worth it in the long run. How confusing to put on things that look and feel just like diapers but be told they aren't diapers. We do however do wear the night time pull ups but that's mostly because I'm lazy and don't want to change sheets in the middle of the night. One battle at a time I think.<br /><br /><b>Clear the decks</b>. <br />I have a hard time hiding my frustration when my favorite pillow/chair/rug is hurt in any way (mean mommy) and if there is one time when a child's ego is especially delicate it is when they are trying to master a new task. So to decrease the chance of injuring any of mommy's favorites and keeping spirits high, I covered furniture with towels and rolled up any rugs I was concerned about. We also tried to hang out in the yard whenever possible as nature doesn't care about her floors as much as I do.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0GhiGZQljhyQK0N3J-L8tBrjb_x7NT4QOrH0t357pCkXyKeZJBf5tBQPrU90DYH94_MK7PyRK6J4avkc7x0SLMtsgXLp0zX3_BEee9-LJKrhbPD7b3gUjN9RPPtqFpmZZHgJVO-mSfmzM/s1600/eveathome.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0GhiGZQljhyQK0N3J-L8tBrjb_x7NT4QOrH0t357pCkXyKeZJBf5tBQPrU90DYH94_MK7PyRK6J4avkc7x0SLMtsgXLp0zX3_BEee9-LJKrhbPD7b3gUjN9RPPtqFpmZZHgJVO-mSfmzM/s400/eveathome.jpg" width="356" /></a></div><br /><b>House arrest</b>. <br />This goes right with the no pull ups and no underwear thing. Eve and I hunkered down and didn't leave the house until we had a full successful day, (Well, that isn't entirely true but I'll get to that in a minute) which turned out to be about four days. Amelia was at camp every day so Eve and I had the house to ourselves and it was all about her. I didn't let her out of my sight until we had a few successes as I didn't want her failure to be because I wasn't there to help her get on in time. That potty was two carted around everywhere.<br /><br /><b>Don't ask me again</b>. <br />The first day I did the 'let's sit down every 10 minutes and see if anything happens' theory but I quickly found that it created more anxiety than necessary. It is a big change to all of a sudden have to sit on this little throne and Eve was confused as to why she was being made to sit in that chair so often. It was starting to become a frustration for her and I wanted that chair to be something positive. So I changed course and backed off the regimented schedule. Instead I'd ask her after snacks, short walks around the yard, a tv show or anytime I went. Stickers work better for some kids, little figurines, whatever. The point is it is a prize. However, the prize is not given just for sitting on the potty. M&M's are only handed out once there is a success. I know a lot of people give out the treat anytime the kids says they need to sit down, whether they do anything or not. But (again mean mommy) I think this is silly and confusing. If all I had to do to get something I wanted was just do 20% of the job, hell I'd be asking to sit on the potty every 5 minutes. Nope. You give me something to flush and I'll give you some chocolate and peanut butter goodness.<br /><br /><b>And the oscar goes to</b>.<b> </b>Hand in hand with the M&M's come the theatrics. Accomplishments need to be celebrated much in the same way a Kardashian throws a wedding - over the top. We cheered, we clapped, we danced, we sang, we called people to tell them. In the words of Kool and the Gang - Celebrate good times, come on.<br /><br /><b>The P word.</b><br />Our downfall. Eve got the hang of peeing on the potty pretty quickly (day 2), but the other P word however was not so easy. The first day she didn't have one at all and the second day we had an accident. No biggie. The third day we had one success and one failure. Moving in the right direction. Then we arrived at the fourth day. Ugh, the fourth day. We had been doing so well up until then that she and I got a little cocky and decided to break one of my cardinal rules - Stay HOME. We picked up Amelia and her friend from camp and I decided to treat the girls to McDonald's. Eve had just gone to the bathroom before we left and I even brought the potty in the car, just in case. We waited in line, got our food and found a seat right next to the play place, all without incident. But then Eve walked over to the slide. The horror. I'll spare the specifics but my tiny 2-1/2-year-old managed to  horrify and disgust two 10 year old. Boys that just a few minutes before were enjoying a very creative burping contest. The janitor had to be called over and gave me the look of death as he put up the yellow cones. I had been shamed out of McDonalds. I didn't think it was possible. (With a master of the other P word about a week and a half after we started.) We have had a successful trip to the zoo and several stores and it feels good to be out of the house like a normal person again and not changing any diapers. Now we can enjoy the rest of the summer, even if we can't step foot in McDonald's again.</div>

Well, okay, there’s a post today, but it’s not regular type post. I’m posting yesterday’s show which was awesome and you should totally listen to it. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">We basically just kicked back and shot the breeze for the whole time. Well, for a while we shot the breeze with Bill the Kid down at the Beer Mine. That was pretty exciting. Then at the end of the show we shot the breeze with <a href="http://mikenet707.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Mike</a> who didn’t really have anything, but he called in anyway cause Matt yelled at him to and so he could tell is John Goodman story. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">We did have a very special Poet’s Corner with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/paul.piatt.9" target="_blank">Paul Piatt</a>, a reading of some of the top Favstar Tweets by <a href="https://twitter.com/MildCheddar_IWS" target="_blank">Bobby Kraft</a> and a few live look-ins at Wimbledon.  Aaaaaaaaaand of course there was a Pee Break with Schmoop where she talked about her Staycation! <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Other than that we talked about our Fourth of July weeks, Jay’s family being in town including the sweet little doggies. Jay’s trip to Springfield, MO and the Springfield Brewing Company and Bass Pro Shops and Matt’s bitter disappointment that Rally’s was closed on the fourth. And then we talked about lots of other stuff too cause we didn’t have any topic for the show. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Anyway, even without a topic it went pretty smoothly and was actually an above average show. Sandy toes and a weepy nose

It was a wonderful holiday with much needed, desperately needed time with my family. I did something unheard of... I left my work at home. Ok, I did bring my computer to whip out a newsletter that is due first thing tomorrow morning. But other than that, I didn't work. I finished reading a book, started re-reading another. The outlaws, yes they were here for part of the time, but it was okay. For the first time in more than six years, I took a nap on the beach. No worries about kids being swept away with the change of tide, gramma had it all under control. Slowly, ever so slowly, I felt the tension peel away and my eyelids grew heavy. When I woke, most of the other boats had left for the day and took their kids dogs and music with them. I'm in the middle of all God's glory. Just a few hours' drive one way and I'm in the mountains on top of the world or the other way I'm at the coast overlooking the edge of the world. It just doesn't get much better than this.<br /><br />We're back home now, back to school and work in the morning.  Today though, I have a strange sense of peace that I don't often feel.  <br /><br />I shed a lot of tears this weekend, probably an unnecessary amount of tears for someone who didn't know or barely knew me... though I knew him very well.  I thank you, Bas, for making such a huge impression on this whole community and not just in this little corner of my world.  <br /><br />In a strange way, I think those tears weren't just for him.  Maybe they were tears that never fell after my mom died.  We had a horrid relationship, as she did with everyone around her.  Many terrible things were said both ways between both of us.  Words that make me shudder as I hear my voice saying them, words that bring tears to my eyes as I hear her saying them to me.  I can't blame her for my mouth, though I can say she trained me well :-(<br /><br />She hung on for about 10 years, many longer than they said she would.  It wasn't a life that was cherished until the last moment. Not on her part or anyone else's for that matter.  I never cried for her.  I did cry for my dad as he faced the inevitability of dealing with the next chapter of his life.  I cried horribly as I found myself finally growing close to my father and getting to know him, just to have that rug ripped out from under me weeks later as the claws of his next wife sunk in.  I was again alone in the world.<br /><br />So many years of therapy later, I've come to accept that she did the best she could.  She was horribly abused as a child, was mentally ill, and genuinely knew no better.  My dad has issues too and also did the best he could.  Acceptance of it all allows me to forgive and move on.<br /><br />Once my tears started coming, my life from about 13 until I met the man that would become my husband started flashing by.  All the hurt, the loneliness, the mistakes (oh, the horrible mistakes), the emptiness, all of it hit me like a bomb.  Tears not just for the loss of a parent but for the one I never really had.  I've cried before, yes an awful lot.  But I'm not sure I've cried as much, as hard, or as completely as I did this weekend.  For once, I think I got it all out.  Stuff I didn't know needed to get out... there it went.<br /><br />Sitting in the sand, listening to the gentle waves, it just brought it all back together.  I'm not really sure where this story is going or what it really means.  I just know I'm at peace.<br /><br />

There are many common misconceptions when it comes to weight training and supplementation, so today we'll get to the bottom of the top five.<br /> <br /> How many workouts should you do per week? Should women lift weights or stick to cardio? These are questions you'll commonly hear in most gyms but most people never find out the facts on these subjects, such is the level of confusion surrounding fitness in general.<br /> <br /> Whether your goal is to gain significant muscular size or simply to lose some unwanted weight, you will find it a very confusing journey if you succumb to the many myths which are in popular culture. When you begin basing your training and diet around scientific fact rather than the theories displayed in magazines and gossip columns, you'll notice far more success. []<br /> <br /> 1) Should females do resistance training?<br /> <br /> Do not buy into the old stereotypes of guys lifting dumbbells and girls running on treadmills. The old myth that ladies will develop big, bulky muscles if the lift weights is pure nonsense. The problem is most people in gyms still believe this to be true. If you are trying to shed unwanted pounds and get leaner, you should include resistance training within your regular workout routine.<br /> <br /> 2) Do you need to use supplements?<br /> <br /> Supplements are a good thing. The enable you to enhance a good diet even further. However, they can become a bad thing when too much weight is placed upon their importance within your routine. Your main results are going to come from your diet and your training, not which whey protein brand your choose. Keep supplements down to a minimum, such as a whey protein and creatine monohydrate.<br /> <br /> 3) Should you workout every day to improve results further?<br /> <br /> Everybody is different so there are two different answers to this question. If you are just starting out in the gym you are able to experience great results if you tailor your training correctly. Try to stick to the basic moves, we call them compound exercises, and train your full body in each session. You'll get great results with 2-3 days per week on the weights. After a few months of training, however, your body will adapt and you'll need to shake things up. This is the stage where you should implement a split routine, training 3-4 times per week and hitting just one or two muscle groups in each workout.<br /> <br /> 4) Is diet crucial to success or not?<br /> <br /> Many people have their own opinions on whether diet is more important than exercise or the other way around, but the truth is they are both vital to your success. It's like trying to figure out whether fuel is more important than your car, it's a pointless argument because they need each other to get the best from both sides. If you think you can achieve success without watching what you eat, this approach will catch up to you very quickly.<br /> <br /> 5) How do you know your calorie intake is correct?<br /> <br /> If you have never watched your diet before then this can prove to be a tricky topic to get to grips with. The easiest way to set a good daily target is to multiply your target weight in pounds by anywhere from twelve to fifteen. This will set an attainable target for you and ensure you are providing your body with enough nutrients.<br /> <br /> Many people continue to buy into these myths on a daily basis and it's not uncommon to see folks who believe all of the things we have shown you today, despite the mountains of proof which is widely available to them.
