Apartment housing at that time and place was mainly associated with tenements and lower class living, but in the late 1860s the <a href="http://www.nyhistory.org/community/first-apartment-building"><span style="color: red;">Stuyvesant</span></a> building opened. And though the building would face Central Park, that region of the park had yet to be landscaped or developed. In fact, the street that was to become Central Park West was still but a dirt road. He hired architect Henry Hardenburgh (the Waldorf-Astoria, the Plaza Hotel), then early in his career at age 32, to design the building. The project would establish Hardenburgh's reputation. Others would include Lillian Gish, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall (with and without Jason Robards, Jr.), Judy Holliday, Jose Ferrer and Rosemary Clooney, Teresa Wright, Robert Ryan, Zero Mostel, Jack Palance, Gwen Verdon, Zachary Scott and Patrick O'Neal. Composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein lived at the Dakota, as did dancer Rudolf Nureyev, playwright William Inge, director John Frankenheimer, <a href="http://www.classicfilmtvcafe.com/2010/12/ted-ashleywarner-brothersand-new.html"><span style="color: red;">Warner Bros. exec Ted Ashley</span></a>, CBS News legend Edward R. Murrow, singer Roberta Flack, feminist/writer Betty Friedan and interior decorator Syrie Maugham, one-time wife of author W. Somerset. Movie critic and Dakota resident Rex Reed recalled that a doorman warned him early on to expect to see Boris Karloff's ghost. Strange and unexplained events were witnessed below ground, in the basement and, for a brief period, a so-called "Phantom of the Dakota" vandalized the building and spooked its inhabitants. But it was only with the release of Roman Polanski's <i>Rosemary's Baby</i> (1968), set and partially shot at the Dakota, that the building's reputation for quirkiness and opulence took on a decidedly dark facet. Evans, destined to become a legendary figure in the New Hollywood era, saw <i>Rosemary's Baby</i> as a director's film and his interest was piqued by the Polish director of what he called "three <i>really</i> offbeat thrillers," <i>Knife in the Water </i>(1962), <i>Repulsion </i>(1965) and <i>Cul-de-sac </i>(1966). <i>Knife in the Water</i>, a<span style="font-size: small;"> taut psychological</span> drama that marked Polanski's feature film debut, brought an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and international acclaim. <i><span style="font-size: small;">Repulsion </span></i><span style="font-size: small;">starred Catherine Deneuve and <i>Cul-de-sac </i>starred her sister, <a href="http://eves-reel-life.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-birthday-tribute-to-francoise-dorleac.html"><span style="color: red;">Francoise Dorleac</span></a>; both were moody, surreal films that won international a<span style="font-size: small;">wards. style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">I have just finished a biography of Socrates read on the heels of a biography of Julius Caesar for an intentional contrast. These two ancient leaders had diametrically opposed approaches to leadership and life. Caesar was guided by an implicit assumption about the essence of human happiness – implicit and assumed because he was a man of action, not reflection. Socrates, on the other hand, was guided by a crystal clear explicit belief about happiness. He said the unexamined life was not worth living, so he examined his guiding principles quite clearly.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">Caesar was all about Caesar. He did things for people, but with the idea of earning their loyalty and so strengthening his own hand. Caesar lived to maximize his own power and glory. In the end, they killed him.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">Socrates lived humbly. A poor man, he owned almost nothing, earned little, went barefoot. He claimed to know nothing either. His goal was to become virtuous through learning the ways of virtue. He believed he had been called by God to help others find their own ways to virtue by asking them provocative questions. In the end, they killed him too. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">I suppose one moral of the two stories is that you can’t win. But I wonder if the quality of one’s death may sometimes say something about the quality of one’s life. When the Senators assassinated Caesar, his last act after having been stabbed multiple times, was to draw his cloak over his head so that people would not see his suffering and death. He died still trying to cover a shame – in this case the shame of being a vulnerable, mortal creature. He failed to amass enough power and glory to hide his shame. Socrates’ dying words were to the effect that he owed a cock to Asclepius, so he wanted his followers to pay the debt. Given that Socrates was a monotheist, executed in part for not believing in the gods, and that the fact that he was dying suggested Asclepius, the god of health and healing, was not serving him well, it was – in a word – a joke. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">It strikes me that Socrates made a better death.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">Socrates had something in common with Paul and also had a major difference with Paul. Socrates believed we all want to do good but that we misunderstand the good and so do evil through ignorance. Paul thought our propensity to do evil resided not in a defective intellect but in something deeper and less rational. “The good that I would do, I do not. The evil that I would not do, that is the very thing I do.” Paul is more Freudian; Socrates, more Kantian. That is the difference between them. But Paul and Socrates agreed that human happiness resides in virtue.” Rabbi Jonathan Sachs agrees that happiness consists of holding a set of moral values and living according to them.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">I believe Paul is closer to right than Socrates about the way we go off course. But I believe Socrates, Sachs, and Paul together offer a striking contrast to contemporary assumptions – which may I add are implicit assumptions worthy of Caesar – about what will make us happy. We are guided by Madison Avenue, not our theologians or moral philosophers. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">Most of us assume happiness lies in getting what we want – usually consisting of material possessions, glory (social or professional status), power or some such thing. Happiness goes along with something we can get, hold, grasp, and cling to.  If we are unhappy, we are apt to seek guidance from psychotherapy, which helps is clarify what it is we really want – like Socrates, therapy helps us “figure it out.” Unlike Socrates, it is figuring out what we want instead of what we believe is right.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">What if happiness is not a matter of getting what we want, since the very wanting keeps us unhappy, and because our desire is inherently insatiable, the quest for what we want is what keeps us unhappy? Buddha would see it that way. What if Jonathan Sachs, Socrates, and Paul are right that happiness consists in habitually doing the right thing? Might we be missing a critical moral foundation to psychology?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><!--EndFragment-->

Create Flat Learning Experiences (also called <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tandem_language_learning" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Tandem language learning">Tandem Learning</a>)</h2><a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/103000836051717567628" target="_blank">+Eva Brown</a>  worked with <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/106887291545106852484" target="_blank">+Barbara Morganfield</a>  @<a href="https://twitter.com/blmteach" target="_blank">blmteach</a> to create a powerful learning experience for their students. They each had an expertise and a topic they were teaching. (Eva - ICT and Barbara - Discipline issues) Eva's students presented tools that would fit what Barbara's students were needing to use in their situations. Barbara's students provided feedback to Eva's students on what worked and didn't.<br /><br />Teachers should graduate from college programs with ready-made connections between teachers in other parts of the world. This makes them more valuable to their schools and their students.<br /><br /><h2>2. Connect with K-12 Classrooms</h2>There is no excuse. With the proliferation of online K-12 projects, preservice teachers can interact with students before they start their student teaching. This is ideal because they can learn about online learning platforms at all levels. I love how she and some of my other highered friends <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/106891555400300093104" target="_blank">+Leigh Zeitz</a> and <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/106123080536346008783" target="_blank">+Eric Brunsell</a>  do this as well.<br /><br /><h2>3. Encourage Teachers to Master the Tools they always have</h2>Eva gives some of the most compelling reasons for mastering the tablet device I've heard. As she moves around working with teachers, she says that she needs to be "ready  to teach" all the time. She says if you can use the tablet and tools like <a class="zem_slink" href="http://prezi.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Prezi">Prezi</a> and <a href="http://www.haikudeck.com/" target="_blank">Haiku Deck</a> then you can reduce the time to prepare and "get to the learning." Very compelling conversation about why she uses them as well.<br /><br /><h2>4. Fit the Tools to the Task</h2>If I handed you a hammer and asked you to cut down a tree, you'd laugh at me. Eva works hard to fit the tools to the task. It is fascinating to me that when Eva covers keyboarding, they use virtual worlds like <a class="zem_slink" href="http://secondlife.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Second Life">Second Life</a> and <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Warcraft" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="World of Warcraft">World of Warcraft</a>.<br /><br />She continually points out different tools that fit a specific purpose. Like a mechanic working on high end automobiles, we've got an increasing toolset and need to start selecting wisely from that set. Paper and pencil are the hammer we used to use for everything, not any more.<br /><br /><h2>5. Always moving forward</h2>She ends the show with such wise advice. I hope you'll listen to see what she says, but it comes down to this. Move forward.<br /><br />In the south we say "when you're green you're growing, when you're ripe, you rot." It applies to crops and it applies to people.<br /><br /><b><span style="color: blue;">Focus on your students</span></b> as you prepare to end the school year. Today I'll run focus groups with my students as they give me feedback about what they learned, where they struggled, and what needs to be improved for next year. Over the summer, I tweak what we're doing. It is about my students and maximizing the all-to-short time we have together.<br /><br />Eva is an example of a teacherpreneur at the college level who is pushing her students to be globally connected and social media savvy. I hope you'll dig into what she has to say because her classroom matters and yours does too. It is my dream that by featuring classrooms at all levels from around the world that it will foster conversations that need to happen about excellence in the classroom. I don't care where you teach, you are important.
