While I don't agree that kids are "{products" I do know that I have to spend quite a bit of extra time to have any hope of considering myself a good teacher. It is a thought provoking read challenging us to be more. WE're all getting so much out of Twitter (many of us are) and the off-time things we're doing and sharing, so you might want to think about it and read his post. Chris says: "My wish for 2013 is that the 2 or 3 teachers who read this go out and find someone on their campus who they can get together with outside of "normal" hours.  Then these same teachers need to get on twitter and find a group of teachers who is on twitter at times they are on and are willing to interact and help with plans and ideas.  Then these same teachers need to pick one day a week when they can devote to a twitter chat and start being an active participant. My wish is that every student has a teacher who is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure they are receiving the best education available. God bless you and happy New Year!"</blockquote><br />How could God have blessed me so much with students who take a minute to know that teachers have feelings too and that we often wonder if all that we give is worth it -- if anyone notices?<br /><br />Just want you all to know that I'm still here. Yesterday was the first day I've felt human in over a month with one of the worst illnesses I can remember having in a long time - largely exacerbated by a very tough schedule this December. This winter break has been a blur interjected with shots and doctor visits, quite literally.<br /><br /><h3>Encourage kids to given genuine thanks...teachers need it</h3>If you have child and they have a teacher who meant something to them - have you thought about mentioning that they might want to pass along a note. I have a tag in evernote that I file all of these "atagirl" comments that I read over when I feel hopeless and like I can't make it any more. Teaching is a high burn out job and we do these things to keep ourselves on track and focused about the main thing...our students.  You'd better love them...or you'll leave them...quite literally.<br /><br /><h3>Give genuine feedback to your students... they need to know they're not a number.</h3>Also, if you would like feedback from students, perhaps you should be giving them feedback as well as this was part of a response I received in response to a personal message I mailed to this student through my class Ning.<br /><br />Today, I needed this, and the fact that it comes from a precious 8th grader that I adore dearly, it means so much more.<br /><br /><h3>As close to perfect as teaching can get</h3>Tears of joy...back to grading and giving good, quality feedback to my students. Happy New Year to you! I hope you enjoyed a great holiday with family, friends or the remote. I enjoyed all of the above and truly had a relaxing and enjoyable time off. But the Christmas decorations are put away and the tree is at the curb, so its time to get to work.<br /><br />Before I share my goals for 2013 I thought I'd see how I did with <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2012/01/2012-goals.html" target="_blank">my 2012 goals</a>.<br /><br />1. <b>Redo the master bedroom</b>. Woop Woop. Check this sucker off. Big fat goose egg on this one. I must have been drunk when I thought of this because the idea that my children would give me enough time to dedicate to a herb garden is laughable. We barely are able to get raking and mowing done. Maybe in a few years. Until then I'll just continue to watch Barefoot Contessa and pretend that's my herb garden.<br /><br />4. <b>Lighting</b>. Well...sort of. I did get a <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2012/02/no-youre-knob-and-tube.html" target="_blank">new chandelier for the dining room</a>, (which will be moving again soon - stay tuned) but I never got around to the hallway light and the deck got candle sconces rather than electric ones. So maybe 75% complete? San Francisco bandwagon fans who truly the most horrible and ugly people you’ll ever come across.<br /><br />- There will be a “Debt Limit Crisis” in March, then a “Financial Crisis” in May, then a “Gas Price Panic” in June, then another “Debt Limit Crisis” in September followed quickly by another “Fiscal Cliff” in October and the Mother of All “Fiscal Cliff Financial Debt Limit Crisis Panics” in November.<br /><br />- Notre Dame will win the BCS Championship by a score of 9-5. Alabama will have the ball on the Irish one yard line first and goal with 2 minutes left but be unable to get into the end zone after running four consecutive dive plays right into the line. On fourth down there will be a mysterious Personal Foul call on Notre Dame giving Bama a new set of downs. They will run four more dive plays into the line and on the last play of the game will come up just two inches short of the goal line. The dramatic final sequence of plays will take place at 2:30 am as the game runs VERY late into the night because of the 8,391 commercials that ESPN will run.<br /><br />- The San Francisco Giants will win the World Series and those horrible people will be unleashed upon us good, decent folks again.<br /><br />- Someone you know will post “I won’t be around much for a few days as I’ve decided I need to unplug for a bit” on a social media site. That person will then proceed to post regularly or even more often than normal.<br /><br />- Several people you know will announce that they’ve had it and they are deleting ALL social media. Two days later they will be back on every single social media site. Even MySpace.<br /><br />- I’m With Stupid Podcast will again ascend to the top spot of the BTR rankings and this time will NOT give the #1 spot away.<br /><br />Well there you go. Ice cream!

We saw the McDonalds in KW for the first time the other day. We had some classes together in college and even worked in the same cognitive psychology lab for a while. But I didn't really know him. Even so, when I heard that he had brain cancer that would kill him in four months, it stopped me cold.</span><br></div><p>I was 19 when I first saw him -- in a class taught by a famous neuropsychologist, Karl Pribram. I'd see Tom at the coffee house, the library, and around campus. He seemed perennially enthusiastic, and had an exaggerated way of moving that made him seem unusually focused. Pribram paused to look out over the classroom and told us that his colleague had been one of the greatest neuropsychologists of all time. Pribram then lowered his head and stared at the floor for such a long time I thought he might have discovered something there. Without lifting his head, he told us that his colleague had been a close friend, and had telephoned a month earlier to say he had just been diagnosed with a brain tumor growing in his temporal lobe. The doctors said that he would gradually lose his memory -- not his ability to form new memories, but his ability to retrieve old ones ... in short, to understand who he was.</p><p>Tom's hand shot up. To my amazement, he suggested that Pribram was overstating the connection between temporal-lobe memory and overall identity. Temporal lobe or not, you still like the same things, Tom argued -- your sensory systems aren't affected. If you're patient and kind, or a jerk, he said, such personality traits aren't governed by the temporal lobes.</p><p>Pribram was unruffled. Many of us don't realize the connection between memory and self, he explained. Who you are is the sum total of all that you've experienced. Where you went to school, who your friends were, all the things you've done or -- just as importantly -- all the things you've always hoped to do. Whether you prefer chocolate ice cream or vanilla, action movies or comedies, is part of the story, but the ability to know those preferences through accumulated memory is what defines you as a person. This seemed right to me. I'm not just someone who likes chocolate ice cream, I'm someone who knows, who remembers that I like chocolate ice cream. And I remember my favorite places to eat it, and the people I've eaten it with.</p><p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">From a friend, Pribram had learned that his colleague had decided to go to the Caribbean for a vacation with his wife. One day he just walked out into the ocean and never came back. He couldn't swim; he must have gone out with the intention of not coming back -- before the damage from the tumor could take hold, Pribram said.</span>Pribram walked up to the lectern and gripped it with both hands. When they had spoken last, his colleague seemed more sad than frightened. He was worried about the loss of self more than the loss of memory. He'd still have his intelligence, the doctors said, but no memories. "What good is one without the other?" his colleague had asked. That was the last time Pribram spoke to him.</p><p>The room was silent for 10 or 15 seconds -- stone silent. I looked over at Tom's notebook. "Neuropsychologist contemplates losing his mind," Tom had written.</p><p>If he had lived, Pribram's colleague would have experienced what neuroscientists call retrograde amnesia. This is the kind of amnesia that is most often dredged up as a plot element in bad comedies and cheap mystery stories; so-and-so gets hit on the head and then can't remember who he is anymore, wanders around aimlessly, finding himself in zany predicaments, until he gets hit on the head again and his memory remarkably returns. This almost never occurs in real life. Although retrograde amnesia is real, it's usually the result of a tumor, stroke, or other organic brain trauma. It isn't restored by a knock on the head. Because they can still form new memories, patients with retrograde amnesia are acutely aware that they have a cognitive deficit, are painfully knowledgeable about what they are losing.</p><p style="text-align: -webkit-auto; ">***</p><p>Tom and I crossed paths years again later when we were both working for a research company. He was part of a team designing virtual musical instruments for non-musicians, like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, seeking to give customers an awesome music-playing experience after zero hours of practice. I saw Tom in the halls from time to time, said hello, saw him at a couple of company jam sessions; he was a really good keyboard player.</p><p>Sometime after I left the research company to begin my first academic job, I ran into a woman from the company who asked if I'd heard the news about Tom.</p><p>"He has an inoperable brain tumor, temporal lobe. The doctors say he has four months to live. I just visited him. You might want to drop by and say hello."</p><p>"Well I ... I don't really know him. I mean, we said hi in the halls and stuff. But, I don't know him ... I don't think we've ever had a conversation longer than two minutes."</p><p>"It doesn't matter," she said. "He doesn't really have anything to do, other than to visit with people. I think he'd really appreciate it." She gave me Tom's number, saying I should phone first, because he has good days and bad.</p><p>I phoned and a caregiver answered. We made an appointment for the following Thursday at 1:00 pm. "He's not so good first thing in the morning. The drugs. And some days aren't good at all. Call first, around 11:00 in the morning, and I'll let you know how he's doing. Toot toot! Train is coming to town!

2013 is here!

<p>What a great NYE celebration we had last night!</p><p>We had a 9.30 dinner reservation at Salute the Beach.  We arrived at about 9.15pm and they were able to seat us immediately.  It was a set menu for the night that was in it.  Looking out on to the beach we sat and sipped a glass of champagne - what an amazing setting.  At 10pm, there was a firework display provided by the Southernmost Hotel.  We had a birdseye view of the fireworks!</p><p>After dinner we moved to the bar to enjoy ambiance and listen to the live music. Come 11.30 or so we cycled home to ring in the New Year alone on our balcony which is what's have done for the past few years.</p><p>Here's to 2013, let's hope it's a good one!!!</p>

You can sign in with your Twitter account and let them know you're interested in sharing. It is supposed to let the most interesting things rise to the top as it is curated, but it really looks quite a bit like Tumblr. I don't have posting rights yet, but I did sign in and ask for them.
