A successful candidate will be joining a world leader in wafer inspection products and technologies designing and manufacturing the next generation of products.</div><div></div><div><b>Responsibilities:</b></div><div>The Wafer Inspection Division (WIN) is seeking a Systems Software Engineer in our Milpitas, California campus. You will be a key member of our highly integrated multi-disciplinary team comprised of software, optical, mechanical, robotics, electronics, control systems and image processing engineers.  You will be responsible for the creation of machine control, image computer and data storage software for next generation Semiconductor Wafer Inspection machines.  You will also be responsible for integrating multiple hardware and software sub-systems to solve some of the most advanced technical challenges facing the semiconductor chip industry.</div><div></div><div>The software is primarily written in Java with various components developed in C or C++ in a multi-threaded and distributed environment. Walmart claims it cares for its workers, but it has a funny way of showing it: A <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/walmart-holding-food-drive-for-its-own-employees.html" rel="nofollow">Walmart store in Ohio is running a Thanksgiving food drive for its own employees </a>who are so underpaid they need charitable donations to have a holiday dinner. Yum, canned peas!<br /><br />Hammergren empathizes with his employees the same way Duke does. In <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/07/teamsters-protest-mckesson-retaliation.html" rel="nofollow">McKesson's Lakeland, Fla., warehouse, workers don't earn enough to afford health insurance</a>. The workers voted to join the <a href="http://teamster.org/" rel="nofollow">Teamsters</a>, and now the company is threatening and harassing them in a by-the-book union-busting effort. <br /><br />Hammergren's signal achievement at <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/McKesson-shareholders-reject-CEO-pay.html" rel="nofollow">McKesson was racking up nearly $1 billion in fines for price-fixing and Medicaid fraud</a>. Now he claims he's concerned about government debt (he's not) and wants to lower it. Presumably he wasn't too worried about contributing to the government debt while he was looting the Treasury.<br /><br />Hammergren belongs to that uniquely loathsome group, <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/01/fix-debt-is-full-of-crap.html" rel="nofollow">Fix the Debt</a>, which wants to cut your Social Security. <a href="http://www.ips-dc.org/reports/platinum_plated_pensions" rel="nofollow">The Institute for Policy Studies</a> found three of the Fix the Debt CEOs who want to impoverish millions of retirees have pensions of more than $100 million each. Hammergren  has the largest retirement fortune of the three: $144.3 million.<br /><br />Another group aiming to throw millions into poverty, the Business Roundtable, is made up of CEOs whose retirement savings are 1,200 times bigger than the average worker's.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.thenation.com/blog/177251/ceos-massive-retirement-fortunes-push-social-security-cuts#" rel="nofollow">The Nation</a> recently exposed the shocking cruelty of Fix the Debt and the Business Roundtable. Reports The Nation:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">These CEOs aren’t just trying to short the average American retiree; they’re throwing their own under the bus. While raising alarm about the federal debt, Business Roundtable CEOs have run up massive deficits in their employees’ pension funds. According to the report, ten companies led by members of Business Roundtable have shortfalls in their employee pension funds of between $4.9 and $22.6 billion. The largest of those belongs to General Electric, run by Business Roundtable and Fix the Debt member Jeffrey Immelt, the prospective beneficiary of a $59.3 million retirement fund. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">GE stopped offering traditional pension plans for new employees in 2011, forcing workers to switch to 401(k) plans. Qualcomm CEO vows to return 75 percent of free cash flow

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://media.mwcradio.com/mimesis/2013-11/20/2013-11-20T123154Z_1_CBRE9AJ0YTF00_RTROPTP_3_TECH-US-QUALCOMM-CHIPS_JPG_475x310_q85.jpg" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>By Noel Randewich</p><br /><p>SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc CEO Paul Jacobs promised on Wednesday to return 75 percent of free cash flow to shareholders through stock buybacks and increased dividends, a new commitment that was lower than some investors hoped for following record returns last year.</p><br /><p>Unveiling his new capital return commitment, Jacobs said Qualcomm would increase dividends faster than earnings and continue repurchases as well.</p><br /><p>Many investors have called for the debt-free and cash-flush company to distribute more profits to shareholders and make firm commitments rather than occasional buybacks. Its plans for capital returns have been a major question for analysts going into this year's investor day in New York.</p><br /><p>'I was looking for something systematic rather than one-time - seems like we've got that,' said Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon.</p><br /><p>Qualcomm is among a growing number of technology companies, including Yahoo Inc and Microsoft Corp, that investors have urged to pay out more capital as earnings growth loses steam. Activist investor Carl Icahn has urged Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook since August to buy back $150 billion in stock.</p><br /><p>In fiscal 2013, Qualcomm returned $6.7 billion, or 86 percent of free cash flow, to shareholders in the form of $2.1 billion in dividends and $4.6 billion of repurchased stock. That percentage of cash return is a bit above average for companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index, according to Cowen analyst Timothy Arcuri.</p><br /><p>Earlier this month, Qualcomm committed to buy back $4 billion in shares in fiscal 2014 and pay $2.5 billion in dividends, but some on Wall Street wanted the chipmaker to make a long-term capital return commitment.</p><br /><p>At the end of September, Qualcomm had $8 billion in cash onshore. It also had $21 billion offshore, which was held by foreign subsidiaries and would be taxed if the company brings it to the United States.</p><br /><p>Qualcomm's shares traded down 0.1 percent after Jacobs' described the capital return plan. They are up 16 percent year to date, less than the S&P 500's 27 percent increase.</p><br /><p>NEW CHIPS</p><br /><p>Earlier on Wednesday, Qualcomm announced a handful of new chips for mobile and networking gadgets ahead of the investor event, where analysts are concerned about a shift in smartphone growth from the United States to China and other developing countries.</p><br /><p>Qualcomm said the fourth generation of its Long-Term Evolution chip, used for fast data transfer in top-tier smartphones, would begin sampling by manufacturing customers early next year.</p><br /><p>Qualcomm is the world's leading mobile chipmaker and is far ahead of Intel Corp and smaller rivals in LTE technology.</p><br /><p>With growth in the smartphone industry shifting away from wealthy markets such as the United States and toward China and other emerging economies, Wall Street has been concerned that less-expensive phones may affect Qualcomm's ability to sell high-end chips and hurt its profitability.</p><br /><p>This month, Qualcomm said it would curb fast-growing operating expenses and release new chips a little less often as it focuses more on less-costly devices.</p><br /><p>While the new LTE chips unveiled on Wednesday are for top-tier smartphones, some of the technology used in them will find its way into cheaper components used widely in low-cost handsets, Cristiano Amon, executive vice president and co-president of Qualcomm's chipmaking division, told Reuters.</p><br /><p>The San Diego company also announced its newest Snapdragon 805 processors for tablets and smartphones, with new features for Ultra HD video.</p><br /><p>The new Snapdragon chips will have up to 40 percent more graphics horsepower while using the same amount of battery power, Amon said.</p><br /><p>Also, Qualcomm said that early next year, manufacturers would start selling routers and media servers with beefed-up Qualcomm processors that allow for more connections and Internet traffic within the home.</p><br /><p>(Editing by Alden Bentley and Lisa Von Ahn)</p><br /></div>

They're coming off a loss to the Seattle Seahawks where Ponder threw two interceptions deep in the Vikings' own territory -- including one that was returned for a touchdown. And Peterson is backing Ponder again.</p><br />[+] Enlarge<img src="http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2012/1226/nfl_a_ponder11_300.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Asked to respond to Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson's comments to the (St. Paul) Pioneer Press that Peterson 'really needs a quarterback,' he said in an interview with FoxSports.com on Tuesday that 'I actually have confidence in Christian Ponder,' that the Vikings' problems on offense run deeper than their struggles at quarterback and that Ponder still gives Minnesota a better chance to win than Matt Cassel or Josh Freeman because he's been in the team's system the longest.</p><br /><p>'I don't feel like last week I was as consistent as I needed to be, but it doesn't show up as much because I'm not throwing the ball 30 times,' Peterson said. 'When you're inconsistent at quarterback and you get it picked off that stuff gets highlighted. As a running back, when you miss a hole it gets overlooked at times. I'm not as critical of the quarterback position because I know how much comes with it and I know how much scrutiny comes with it and how they are viewed in the public eye.'</p><br /><p>Ponder played one of his best games of the season on Nov. 7 against the Washington Redskins, completing 17 of his 21 passes for 174 yards, two touchdowns and an interception when he dislocated his left shoulder trying to stretch for the end zone on a 13-yard run. He continued to play well in the first half on Sunday against the Seahawks, connecting on nine of his 13 passes for 114 yards and lofting a 38-yard touchdown to Jarius Wright. But in the second half, he hit just four of his nine passes, for 15 yards and the two interceptions.</p><br /><p>'You can't base it off of last game,' Peterson said. 'I think he responded well when he came back and helped us get a win against Washington. He went out in that game with a dislocated shoulder and I'm on the sideline like, 'Hey man, shoot, pop it in and get back in there.' Guys were trying to get him back in there. It's one of those thing like when you're doing good everyone is with you and when you're doing bad they're against you. That's just how it goes, unfortunately.'</p><br /><p>The Vikings are 2-8 this season after going 10-6 and reaching the playoffs in 2012, but Peterson said coach Leslie Frazier still has the players' confidence.</p><br /><p>'One thing that hasn't been lost is the will to win,' Peterson said. 'Even though we don't have a lot of W's, guys are out there and we're playing football. Google kills Currents, launches a Flipboard

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://gigaom2.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/shutterstock_1542757671.jpg?w=300&h=200&crop=1" width="600"/><br /><p>Apple is no longer the only mobile platform with a digital Newsstand: Google said on Wednesday that it is launching a one-stop Android shop for magazine, newspaper and blog content called Google Newsstand, an app created by merging Currents - the Flipboard-style magazine app it first launched in 2011 - with its existing Google Play magazine store. The company says the app will offer more than 1,900 free and paid content sources.</p><br /><p>In addition to the magazine partners it already had through Currents, Google is adding subscription-only newspaper providers like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal to the Newsstand app. Google Play product manager Scott Dougall said users will be able to import accounts they already have with those outlets, and will also be able to click and subscribe to other news-content providers such as the Financial Times from within the app. Existing users of Currents and Google magazines just have to upgrade their apps, he said.</p><br /><img src="http://gigaom2.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/newsstand_n7_readnow_landscape.png?w=708&h=470" width="600"/><br /><p>The Newsstand gives users a single place to catch up on all the news and information from the sources they want with its 'Read Now' stream, Dougall said - and it will also recommend new types of content or new topics based on what it knows about a reader. This kind of smart curation, driven by the vast quantities of data Google has about users, could be one of the app's biggest strengths, especially when compared with a similar service such as Flipboard.</p><br />A shot across Flipboard's bow<br /><p>In what appeared to be a shot at Flipboard, Dougall said that while the reading experience of Google Newsstand is similar to the app - in that content from multiple sources is pulled in - the Google experience involves a closer relationship with the media partners whose content appears there. 'We have full article access, we're not just repurposing content that's out there,' he said. 'We are working very closely with our media partners.'</p><br /><p>Flipboard has faced some criticism in the past for not providing enough value to the media companies whose content it uses, but the company says it has been working to develop better relationships with providers like the Wall Street Journal - where Flipboard also integrates with the paper's paywall. CEO Mike McCue has also said that it plans to roll out support for more subscription-based media offerings, and wants to help providers take advantage of premium advertising as well.</p><br /><img src="http://gigaom2.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/newsstand-feature3-all.png?w=708" width="600"/><br /><p>The name Newsstand suggests similarities to Apple's mobile magazine and newspaper store, but Google's version is very different, Dougall said. Whereas the Apple version of the Newsstand contains discrete magazine and newspaper apps, he said - something that has drawn a lot of criticism from those who feel apps get lost in the Apple Newsstand, and are difficult for users to find or update - Google's version is more of a Flipboard-style experience, he said, where content flows into the app from different sources.</p><br /><p>Media companies like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times weren't part of Google Currents because the web giant's app didn't support subscription models or paywalls, Dougall said, but they are part of Newsstand because Google can now integrate with those plans. Fewer people traveling for Thanksgiving

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/dam/assets/131120110211-aaa-thanksgiving-travel-report-miami-traffic-story-top.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p><strong>(CNN)</strong> -- Fewer people are expected to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday this year.</p><br /><p>Some 43.4 million Americans are predicted to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday next week, a 1.5% decrease from the 44 million people who traveled last year, according to AAA projections.</p><br /><p>The number of people traveling at least 50 miles from home during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period fell short of last year's four-year high. Travel company AAA describes the Thanksgiving holiday travel period as Wednesday, November 27 to Sunday, December 1.</p><br /><p>Some 90% of travelers drive rather than fly during the holiday, but fewer are also driving this year: Some 38.9 million travelers will drive, a decrease of 1.6%. The number of people flying is also expected to drop 3.7% from 3.26 million last year to 3.14 million this year, according to AAA.</p><br /><p>'While the economy continues to improve, the sluggish pace of the recovery is creating uncertainty in the minds of some consumers and therefore AAA is projecting a slight decline in the number of Thanksgiving travelers this year,' said AAA Chief Operating Officer Marshall L. Doney, in a Wednesday press statement. 'For those traveling the good news is motorists will receive a holiday bonus in the form of lower gas prices which are at their lowest levels for the holiday since 2010.'</p><br /><p>The Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday will be the holiday's busiest overall travel day, according to AAA. Thirty-seven percent of travelers expect to travel on Wednesday and the second busiest day will be Sunday, with 33% planning to return home that day.</p><br /><p>For fliers, the busiest travel day is expected to be Sunday, December 1, with an estimated 2.56 million travelers, according to Airlines for America, an airline industry group. The second busiest is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (November 27) with 2.42 million fliers. Those numbers compare to the estimated 1.87 million travelers on Saturday, November 23.</p><br /><strong>Impact of gasoline prices on travel plans</strong><br /><p>Drivers may find some relief at the gas pump, with AAA predicting prices of lower than $3 per gallon at gas stations in most states -- the cheapest gas prices for the Thanksgiving holiday in three years. The national average price of gas is at its cheapest level of the year and is expected to continue dropping for weeks.</p><br /><p>Car travelers are expected to drive an average of 601 miles this year compared to 588 miles last year. They are also spending less on travel, with median spending expected to drop from $498 last year to $465 this year.</p><br /><strong>Help for the infrequent traveler</strong><br /><p>If you are flying this holiday season and rarely fly, here's a bit of helpful holiday advice from the Transportation Security Administration:</p><br /><p><strong>What about my shampoo and conditioner?</strong> Follow the TSA's 3-1-1 rule. If you want to travel with liquids in your carry-on bags, you can most likely bring them in bottles that hold 3.4 ounces or less, placed in one quart-sized, clear, plastic, zipped bag. (One bag per passenger, please.) Frequent business travelers: Just because you carried more bottles on your weekly trips doesn't mean you will be allowed during the holidays. These flights will likely be full, and you don't want to be the one slowing down your TSA security line.</p><br /><p><strong>Travelers with medication, disabilities or medical conditions.</strong> People can travel with their medication, but make sure to tell the TSA officers at the start of the screening. And there are rules to follow. Travelers who need extra assistance because of disabilities or medical conditions can call the TSA Cares line at 855-787-2227 before your trip for guidance.</p><br /><p><strong>Don't wrap your presents (yet)</strong>. While there's no absolute rule against wrapped gifts, TSA officers may need to unwrap your gifts to inspect them. Why not wait until you land to wrap them?</p><br /><p><strong>Don't carry a knife.</strong> Knives are still prohibited in carry-on luggage, but they can be placed in checked luggage. (Yes, there was a debate earlier in the year about knives, but the knives didn't win the right to fly in the passenger cabins.)</p><br /><p><strong>Don't carry a gun.</strong> Passengers carrying guns up to a TSA security checkpoint can be subject to arrest and prosecution, even if bringing your weapon was an accident. Check TSA and airline regulations before trying to transport firearms and ammunition.</p><br /><p><strong>Knitting needles are dandy</strong>. Knitting needles and other needlepoint items -- including scissors under 4 inches -- can be packed in your carry-on bags. But any cutter with a blade, including circular thread cutters, must be packed in your checked baggage.</p><br /><p><strong>Still have questions?</strong> Call the TSA. Really. <b>Management Information Systems</b> (MIS) not only include software systems, but the entire set of business processes and resources that are used to pull together information from functional or tactical systems. Data is then presented in a user-friendly and timely manner so that mid and upper-level managers can use it to take the right actions. The entire system is designed so that the company will meet its strategic and tactical goals.<br /><br />Organizations have multiple functional systems. These usually include sales systems, call center systems, financial systems, inventory systems, logistic systems and more. MIS combines information from multiple systems. This helps management staffers better understand their own departments' contributions. In many cases, the combination of data, such as sales figures combined with available inventory, help the manager take the appropriate action in order to meet the customer's needs.<br />Function<br /><br /><br />The primary function of MIS is to help a manager take an action, answer a question or ask the right question. The questions or actions should directly relate to tactical or strategic goals. A sales manager who uses projections from the financial systems to compare with actual sales from the sales system can better gauge whether goals will be met. As an MIS project grows, so does the cost of implementing a solution, managing the information processes and monitoring daily activities. The result of an MIS project must provide value back to the organization in order to be worth the cost.<br />Misconceptions<br /><br />Many managers mistakenly believe that, for MIS to be effective, all data from all systems must be combined. The value of MIS is based upon how much it can help managers manage. If this means bringing just the data needed from several systems and ignoring the rest for now, the end result still has worth, which is the ultimate goal of MIS.

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://a57.foxnews.com/global.fncstatic.com/static/managed/img/Scitech/660/371/RTR2OF7R.jpg?ve=1" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>The proposed changes to the current landline system in the United States will replace the currently used copper wires.Reuters</p><br /><p>Move over, Ma Bell.</p><br /><p>While cellular iPhones and VoIP calls placed over fiber-optic cables are how many Americans make phone calls today, the backbone of the country's communication system is still a century-old network of copper wires -- the POTS network, short for <i>plain old telephone system.</i> And even cellular calls still touch and depend on all that old copper.</p><br /><p>That's about to change, however.</p><br />'This is what I have called the Fourth Network Revolution, and it is a good thing.'<br /><p>- FCC chairman Tom Wheeler</p><br /><p>The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Tuesday announced plans to expedite the largest change to the nation's phone system in decades -- a move away from circuit-switched systems that send analog signals over copper cables to a digital, IP-based network that largely relies on fiber optic.</p><br /><p>'This is what I have called the Fourth Network Revolution, and it is a good thing,' FCC chairman Tom Wheeler wrote in a blog post. 'The way forward is to encourage technological change while preserving the attributes of network services that customers have come to expect ... we have listened, and now it is the time to act. In this, I agree with my commission colleagues.'</p><br /><p>In January, the FCC is expected to begin 'a diverse set of experiments' in order to figure out how to transition to the new IP-based system, a transition that will likely take years, if not decades. The initial tests will experiments will likely include regional tests of an IP-based system to ascertain reliability, scalability and so on, an FCC spokesman told FoxNews.com.</p><br /><p>The upgrade may mean introducing the age of video calling to landlines. An IP landline network, unlike current copper wires can handle much larger amounts of data that could be used to make video calls.</p><br /><p>'Our current infrastructure has served us well for almost a century but it no longer meets the needs of America's consumers,' AT&T's Jim Cicconi said in a response published online. 'The transition to broadband and IP services that has already begun is driven by consumers who are moving to the Internet and choosing to connect in ways not imagined just a decade ago.'</p><br /><p>Companies like Verizon and AT&T currently control the existing landline phone network and are subject to strict rules by the FCC to protect consumers. It is unclear how the planned changes will affect the telephone companies as the FCC has historically been opposed to classifying broadband Internet as a telecom service.</p><br /><p>'The way forward is to encourage technological change while preserving the attributes of network services that customers have come to expect,' Wheeler wrote. 'History has shown that new networks catalyze innovation, investment, ideas, and ingenuity.'</p><br /></div>

<div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Kate Kelland</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>LONDON (Reuters) – Total health spending fell in one of three OECD nations between 2009 and 2011, with poor people in countries hardest hit by the financial crisis at risk of longer-term problems due to reduced access to medicines and check-ups, the OECD said on Thursday.</p> <p>The drop is a sharp reversal of strong growth in health spending in the years prior to the financial crisis, the Paris-based organization said, and makes it all the more important that governments work to make healthcare systems more productive, efficient and affordable.</p> <p>Spending per capita fell in 11 of 33 OECD countries between 2009 and 2011, according to the 2013 “Health at a Glance” report.</p> <p>In Greece, which has been crippled by financial and economic crises in recent years, per capita spending plunged by 11.1 percent, while in Ireland it dropped by 6.6 percent.</p> <p>Growth also slowed significantly in other countries, including the United States (1.3 percent) and Canada (0.8 percent).</p> <p>The OECD cautioned that short-term benefits to budgets are likely to be greatly outweighed by the longer-term impacts on health, and health spending.</p> <p>Only Japan and Israel saw the rate of health spending growth accelerate since 2009 compared with the previous decade. Spending in South Korea continued to grow at more than 6 percent per year from 2009, but more slowly than in previous years.</p> <p>With recessions, downturns and faltering economic growth hitting many OECD countries, governments have sought to cut spending by reducing prices of medical goods, especially pharmaceuticals, and by capping budgets and introducing wage cuts in hospitals.</p> <p>The OECD said the market share of generic drugs has increased significantly over the past decade in many countries. Yet generics still represent less than 25 percent of the market in Luxembourg, Italy, Ireland, Switzerland, Japan and France, compared with about 75 percent in Germany and Britain.</p> <p>More than three-quarters of OECD countries reported a cut in real-term spending on prevention programs in 2011 over 2010, and half spent less than in 2008.</p> <p>Cuts to spending on cost-effective prevention programs on obesity, harmful use of alcohol and smoking are a cause for concern, the report said.</p> <p>Reductions in the supply of health services and changes in their financing through increases in direct out-of-pocket payments for patients are also affecting access to care.</p> <p>After years of improvement, waiting times for some operations in Portugal, Spain, England and Ireland are now on the rise, the OECD said.</p> <p>It also warned that across the OECD, the poorest people are worst affected and may be going without care they need such as medicines or check-ups for chronic conditions.</p> <p>“This may have long-term health and economic consequences on the most vulnerable in society,” it said.</p> <p>(Editing by Ralph Boulton)</p> <ul id="topics" class="hidden"> <li>Politics & Government</li> <li>OECD</li> </ul><p></p> //<!--[CDATA[ jQuery(".gmframe").load(function (){jQuery(this).remove();}); //]]--> <br><br>
