The death toll was expected to rise.</div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Solomons officials reported two 4 foot, 11-inch waves hit the western side of Santa Cruz Island, damaging between 70 and 80 homes and properties, said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister. Many villagers had headed to higher ground as a precaution, Herming said.</div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;"></div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Earlier, Solomon Islands Police Commissioner John Lansley said local police patrols had reported that several people were presumed dead, though the reports were still being verified.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"Sadly, we believe some people have lost their lives," he said. "At the moment we potentially know of four, but there may of course be more."</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">One of the people presumed dead was fishing in a dugout canoe when the first wave hit, sweeping him out to sea, Herming said. Officials were searching for his body. Another woman was believed to have drowned when the water rushed into her village, Herming said.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Four villages on Santa Cruz were impacted by the waves, with two facing severe damage, Lansley said. Other areas of the Solomons did not appear to have been seriously affected.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Disaster officials were struggling to reach the remote area after the tsunami flooded the airstrip at the nearest airport and left it littered with debris.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">The tsunami formed after an 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Lata, on Santa Cruz in Temotu province, the easternmost province of the Solomons, about a 3-hour flight from the capital, Honiara. Temotu has a population of around 30,000 people.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami of about 3 feet was measured in Lata wharf. Smaller waves were recorded in Vanuatu and New Caledonia.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">The center cancelled earlier warnings for tsunami waves further away.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Richard Dapo, a school principal on an island near Santa Cruz, said he lives inland but has been fielding calls from families on the coast whose homes have been damaged by the waves.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"I try to tell the people living on the coastline, 'Move inland, find a higher place. Make sure to keep away from the sea. Watch out for waves,'" he said.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">He said he's heard the waves have swamped some smaller islands, although he's not aware of any deaths or serious injuries at this point. He said it's difficult to contact people because cellphone coverage is patchy in the region.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">In Honiara, the warnings prompted residents to flee for higher ground.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"People are still standing on the hills outside of Honiara just looking out over the water, trying to observe if there is a wave coming in," said Herming, the prime minister's spokesman.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Atenia Tahu, who works for the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp. in Honiara, said most people were remaining calm.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"People around the coast and in the capital are ringing in and trying to get information from us and the National Disaster Office and are slowly moving up to higher ground," Tahu said. "But panic? No, no, no, people are not panicking."</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Dr. Rooney Jagilly, the medical superintendent at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara, said the hospital asked about half its 200 patients to leave and stay with family or friends as a precautionary measure because the hospital is located near the shoreline. Those patients who weren't mobile enough to move stayed, but the hospital remained ready to evacuate them.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Jagilly said there had been no flooding and he hoped the hospital would return to normal Thursday. He said his staff was ready to mobilize to Santa Cruz because the small hospital there has no doctor after the previous one recently died.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">An official at the disaster management office in Vanuatu said there were no reports of damage or injuries there.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">More than 50 people were killed and thousands lost their homes in April 2007 when a magnitude 8.1 quake hit the western Solomon Islands, sending waves crashing into coastal villages.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">The Solomons comprise more than 200 islands with a population of about 552,000 people. That KIND of teacher

Enough brightness to help everyone else feel hope. Be that KIND of teacher. </td></tr></tbody></table> <p> You can tell a lot about a teacher at the copier machine. People are watching you and certain small things earn a great amount of respect because they tell a bit about you. When you have a school full of this KIND of people, things just run smoother.</p> <p><strong>When the copier runs out of paper, do you load just enough for your job or do you top off the copier?</strong></p> <p>Think about it ... if everyone loads just enough for THEIR job and the copier is used 50 times a day, that tray is opening and closing 50 times. Then, you have 50 times that people are frustrated that SOMEONE ELSE didn't top off the copier. Your copier breaks more often and people are MORE on edge. If just 2 or 3 people topped off the copier, wouldn't your day run much more smoothly? I know of people that just pop in and load the copier when they are waiting on something else ... it seems little, but I notice how much paper people put in the copier because it says whether they think of others after them or just themselves.</p> <p><strong> Do you have labels that you use consistently for students and other teachers that are limiting your thoughts and interactions?</strong></p> <p>Label maps not people. People can change, but not when you try to hold them in a certain place. Smart. Hard working. Sorry. Lazy. Struggling. Emotionally unstable.</p> <p>There are some teachers who consistently use certain terms relating to kids. "Lazy" is one of those terms I just cannot stand. A child may not be doing your work, but are they really lazy? What if you're so boring that they have to pinch their arms to stay awake, like I did with a history professor in college? What if they are so lost they don't know where to start? What if they think you hate them and they're just trying to get by? What if you make fun of them every time they try something and make them feel like an idiot in front of the class? What if they had to take care of their little brothers and sisters while their parents fought again last night? Can you honestly condense your assessment of a student down to the word "lazy."</p> <p><strong>Do you go to bat and help those teachers who are so tired they can't even get out of the dugout?</strong></p> <p>There are times when there is so much work to be done, or a teacher is so loaded down, they can't see straight. Right now is one of those times for me - I'm so tired I can't see straight. </p> <p>I had a down day and a teacher did something for me. When it dawned on me what she had done -- I looked at her and said "thank you, I can't believe you did that for me" and she said, "I went to bat for you because you're worth it." I could have cried, what she did for me was huge.</p> <p>Another teacher jumped in and helped solve a problem for me with a few minutes of her time...she went to bat for me too. Another offered to keep a class for me during what will be a very busy time...she went to bat.</p> <p>Do you notice who is losing their mind with work and worry and do you come up under that burden for them? My sister brings me a diet cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper when she knows I'm having one of those days. She shows up at my desk, puts in on my desk, smiles, says "I love you" and leaves. I know what it means. She loves me and she loves me enough to give up her (and my) favorite soda. She goes to bat. She is that KIND of sister.</p> <p><strong>What kind of teacher are you?</strong></p> <p>Teaching is tough. Tough, but very rewarding. We put up with the yucky stuff kind of like you put up with those dirty diapers on your toddler - you love the squirming, sometimes fussy little child that makes those awful packages. We have students and stress and that means we have someone to teach. Because we teach, we have all these extra stresses and worries. The kids are worth it.</p> <p>But when other teachers take a moment to be unselfish in little ways, it makes a difference. Because the KIND of teacher who is KIND makes that KIND of school where everyone wants to work. Not a perfect school but the KIND of school where mutual respect and kindness underlie the very hard work that we're called to do.</p> <p>Let's be that KIND of teacher - whether people notice or not. Don't tell her this, but I'm ready for a change too. I'm going White, Pink and Blue (with some yellow and green thrown in for good measure.) In 2011, 1.4 million died from it, making it the world's deadliest infectious disease after <a href="http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/aids/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="In-depth reference and news articles about AIDS/H.I.V.." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">AIDS</a>. Thanks to billions of dollars spent on diagnosis and treatment over the past decade, deaths and infections are slowly declining. Yet a disturbing phenomenon has emerged that could not only reverse any gains we've made, but also encourage the spread of a newly resistant form of the disease.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">In the largest study of its kind, to be published today in the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, colleagues and I have found that fake and poorly made <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/health/diseasesconditionsandhealthtopics/antibiotics/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="Recent and archival health news about antibiotics." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">antibiotics</a> are being widely used to treat tuberculosis. These substandard drugs are almost certainly making the disease more resistant to drugs, posing a grave health threat to communities around the world.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Our research team collected samples of two commonly used medicines, isoniazid and rifampicin, from neighborhood pharmacies and markets in 17 countries where tuberculosis is pervasive across Africa, Asia, South America and Europe. Nearly one of every 10 pills we collected failed to meet basic quality standards. In African countries, one in six pills was substandard.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Failing pills typically had too little of the active ingredient — the molecule that destroys tuberculosis bacteria. Most of these drugs came from legitimate manufacturers; they were either poorly made or corroded in transit. The rest appeared genuine, but after researchers tested them and more closely analyzed the packaging, they turned out to be fakes — produced and distributed through criminal enterprises. A pack of fake pills might sell for a dollar on the streets of India, but estimates of the global market for fake drugs range into the tens of billions of dollars.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">The World Health Organization recommends that tuberculosis patients receive supervised treatment and quality medicines provided by public health departments. But traveling to the clinics where this treatment is dispensed can be very expensive, especially for poorer patients. Private markets for tuberculosis drugs — where we procured our samples — are often easier to access. For patients in Zambia, for example, treatment through the national tuberculosis program is three times more expensive than self-administering treatment with drugs purchased at local markets. In addition, counterfeiters in emerging markets can infiltrate the legitimate supply chain by submitting falsified paperwork and lying about where the drugs originated. When this happens, most pharmacists have no idea that the products they sell won't work.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Some patients will die outright when shoddy medicines fail to cure them. Others will take drugs with too little active ingredient, killing some of their infection's bacteria but leaving the strongest to multiply. These patients could go on to spread a drug-resistant form of the disease, which is deadlier and vastly more expensive to control.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Back in the 1990s, New York City spent more than $1 billion on an epidemic of drug-resistant tuberculosis. Today, curing a single case of it in the United States can cost more than $200,000. The financial and public health risks for Americans are so great that the Department of Homeland Security has called the most lethal known form of the disease, an extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis called XDR-<a href="http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/pulmonary-tuberculosis/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="In-depth reference and news articles about Pulmonary tuberculosis." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">TB</a>, an "emerging threat to the homeland." Virtually unknown 10 years ago, XDR-TB has now been identified in at least 77 countries — including the United States.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a drug called Sirturo, designed to target drug-resistant forms of the disease. While this provides a welcome new hope, we fear it will not be enough. Tuberculosis will not be brought under control until we reduce patients' exposure to substandard medicines.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">This is not a problem for just the developing world. While stronger manufacturing practices, more effective regulatory agencies and more alert customs officials help protect the supply here, the United States is not impervious to bad drugs. Last fall, a generic version of <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/health/diseasesconditionsandhealthtopics/lipitor_drug/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="Recent and archival health news about Lipitor." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">Lipitor</a> produced in India was recalled after it was found to contain particles of glass. Since the United States is currently facing a shortage of tuberculosis medicines, it will look to sources outside the country. It must ensure that these drugs are of sufficient quality.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">The United States <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/c/centers_for_disease_control_and_prevention/index.html?inline=nyt-org" title="More articles about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." class="meta-org" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a> is best positioned to lead the fight against substandard and fraudulent tuberculosis drugs. The agency works with public health organizations around the world to stop health threats before they reach our shores. And it is run by Dr. Tom Frieden, who led New York City's successful campaign against drug-resistant tuberculosis in the '90s. The C.D.C. should work with the State Department's new Office of Global Health Diplomacy and the World Bank to help foreign governments, law enforcement agencies and pharmaceutical companies strengthen drug supply chains and prevent companies from making substandard products.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">They should follow the lead of the President's <a href="http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/malaria/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="In-depth reference and news articles about Malaria." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">Malaria</a> Initiative, which tests every batch of drugs it provides to patients in poor countries, and encourage authorities to do the same for tuberculosis drugs. Drug regulators should also confirm that available medicines are really registered where they say they are (we found that unregistered medicines were more likely to be substandard). Finally, they must prosecute and imprison makers of lethal fake drugs.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">As long as substandard tuberculosis drugs are permitted in the marketplace, people will continue to die in pursuit of a cure. Baby boomers have a reputation for being addicted to exercise and obsessed with eating well.<br /><br><br /><br>But that story didn't jibe with what physician Dana E. King and his colleagues see walking through the door of their family practice every day in Morgantown, W.Va.<br /><br><br /><br>"The perception is that the baby boomers are very active — they are, you know, climbing up mountains, and they are a very healthy bunch," says King, a professor in the department of family medicine at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. "We actually see people that are burdened with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, [and] who are taking an awful lot of medication."<br /><br><br /><br>So King and his colleagues mined data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a big federal survey, to compare baby boomers — those who are now in their late 40s to 60s — with people from two decades ago who were in that age bracket.<br /><br><br /><br>There were some surprises, says King, who, along with his colleagues, reports the results in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.<br /><br><br /><br>Baby boomers are healthier in some important ways. They are much less likely to smoke, have emphysema or get heart attacks. But in lots of other ways, the picture's not so great.<br /><br><br /><br>"The proportion of people with diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity [is] increasing. And perhaps even more disturbing, the proportion of people who are disabled increased substantially," King says.<br /><br><br /><br>Double the percentage of baby boomers, as compared with the previous generation, need a cane or a walker to get around. And even more have problems so bad that they can't work.<br /><br><br /><br>"Only 13 percent of people said they were in excellent health compared with 33 percent a generation ago, and twice as many said they were in poor health," King says. "And that's by their own admission."<br /><br><br /><br>King says the reasons are pretty clear: big increases in obesity and big decreases in exercise.<br /><br><br /><br>"About half of people 20 years ago said they exercised regularly, which meant three times a week, and that rate now is only about 18 percent," he says. "That's an astonishing change in just one generation."<br /><br><br /><br>The impact could be far-reaching if millions of baby boomers are already in such bad shape just as they're starting to grow old.<br /><br><br /><br>"The implications for health care costs in the next decade are astounding," King says. "The baby boomers are going into those high medical-use years in much worse condition than their forefathers."<br /><br><br /><br>The report comes at a time when the baby boomers are starting to enter old age in large numbers. "There are ... something like 10,000 a day reaching 65," says Richard Suzman of the National Institute on Aging. "It doesn't look good."<br /><br><br /><br>Part of the reported decline in health may be that baby boomers look sicker. They're getting diagnosed and treated for health problems their parents never knew they had.<br /><br><br /><br>But there may also be something else going on. "I'm part of the leading edge of the baby boom, and I know from personal experience that we have high expectations of life," saysLinda Martin, who studies health trends at the Rand Corp. "And so it could be that the decline in reports of excellent health could simply be that we have [a] higher expectation of what excellent health is."<br /><br><br /><br>Despite all this, baby boomers are living longer than their parents. So each site will consist of different projects. Available resources, such as time, money, space, and labor, will certainly play a role in what projects are chosen. Perhaps the easiest project, and one that can be done anywhere, is to install bird feeders and bird houses. Bird feeders and houses are relatively cheep, err I mean cheap, can be put up in a few minutes, and can be installed any time of the year. Bird feeders are also one of the quickest ways to attract wildlife to your facility. Lesson plans can easily be developed from early childhood all the way up through high school. Some examples include keeping track of the number of birds or species that visit the bird feeder, or tracking the number of birds or species through different seasons. Install multiple feeders, and fill them with different types of food. Determine what types of birds use the different feeders and analyze the different beak adaptations for the different food types. <o:p></o:p></span><br /><h4> To buy, or not to buy? That is the question.<o:p></o:p></h4><span style="font-family: Arial;">Obviously, the quickest way to install both bird houses and feeders is to purchase them. There are numerous styles and sizes available to fit into almost any budget. There are a few key areas to pay attention to. First, what species of birds are you interested in attracting? Birds use different types of houses, eat different types of food, and prefer different types of feeders. Generally you will have better success trying to attract birds that already frequent your area. For bird feeders, there are several bird feeders on the market that are quite small and dainty. In order to keep your birds’ interest, it is important to keep the feeder filled. Although kids enjoy filling bird feeders, one that is too small may need filled too frequently to be practical. Younger students can also construct feeders and houses for birds. There are several “kid friendly” designs available. Better yet, have students utilize recycled materials to construct bird houses or feeders for use at school or home. Houses and feeders can be constructed from margarine tubs, milk cartons, coffee cans, and even soda bottles. Plans are available from a variety of sources on the web. <o:p></o:p></span><br /> <br /><h4 class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1em 0in;">A bird in hand…<o:p></o:p></h4><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">Although most WILD School Sites contain multiple projects that can take years to develop from start to finish, birds feeders and houses offer an opportunity to start educating youth about Ohio’s wildlife right now. 28 in 28 #5: Sourcebook of Scandinavian Furniture

Norton, 2012<br />Paperback, 304 pages<br /><br /><img alt="28-28_Scandinavian.jpg" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/28-28_Scandinavian.jpg" title="Book cover" /><br /><br />Using the word "timeless" is always problematic, because no human creation is truly timeless. Everything is created at a certain time, be it a particular day, month, year, or even decade, and therefore exhibits certain traits of that time. But it's hard not to describe Scandinavian furniture as timeless, because many of the chairs and other furnishings coming from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden don't age as quickly as designs from other countries; they don't immediately recall a particular time. Or to put it another way, Scandinavian design's balance of traditional crafts and industrial production—both working together to create beautiful, useful objects—is not as concerned with style and fashion as elsewhere. In turn it has become it's own style. It's not uncommon to hear "Scandinavian style" relative to furniture, interiors, and even architecture of a certain aesthetic; it's almost as common as phrases like "mid-century modern" or "Eames style."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.judithgura.com/">Judith Gura</a>'s <i>Sourcebook of Scandinavian Furniture</i> is valuable not only for collecting a wealth of available designs from the Nordic countries in one place, but for delving into what Scandinavian design actually is, mainly by discussing each country's history and thereby presenting what they uniquely contribute to the larger category of design that is Scandinavian furniture. Gura then traces Scandinavian furniture from 1950 to present, revealing how the enormous quality of design has always been accompanied by concerted efforts of manufacturers and governments to promote the designs abroad. Many people may equate Scandinavian furniture with the middle of last century, but Gura shows how "the current generation of designers has produced innovative furniture ... informed by the cultural heritage of its makers."<br /><br />The bulk of the book is the "selective sourcebook," 215 pages—or 400 pieces—of chairs, sofas, chairs, tables, chairs, storage, chairs, stools, and more chairs, not in that order. The sourcebook is not comprehensive (it does not tackle commercial or outdoor furnishings, for example), but the bulk falls into various categories of chairs. And it's hard to deny how skilled Scandinavian designers are with chairs; think of Arne Jacobsen's Ant and Egg chairs, Hans Wegner's Three-legged Shell (it graces the top of the front cover), or anything by Alvar Aalto. Each piece of furniture is pictured on a white or monochromatic background; very few pieces are seen in context, lest the book resemble an Ikea catalog. Further each piece is numbered and labeled with important information: designer, year, materials, dimensions, and producer. This numbering helps in regard to the companion CD-ROM, though unfortunately JPGs of the illustrations in the book are the only thing included in digital format. It would have been handy to have a richer media experience, one that hyperlinked each product to the website of its producer, for example. Selects vendors, monitors vendor performance and negotiates vendor agreements for electronic book packages and other electronic monographs and one-time purchases. Supervises the Acquisitions Assistant. With the Assistant, adapts processes to take advantage of new technologies, establishes procedures when new systems are implemented, and covers essential duties of the Assistant when necessary. With the Acquisitions Assistant, handles complex or difficult order requests, reviews the status of outstanding orders, and communicates with students, faculty or others if material is not available, suggesting alternatives when possible. Serves as the Coordinator of Collection Development, convening Selectors’ and Collection Group meetings, providing regular reports on monograph spending by department and format, and generally supporting the work of managing the Library’s monographic collections. Evaluates monographs offered as gifts, supervising processing and acknowledgement, and consulting with selectors or other librarians regarding the suitability of offered monographs for the circulating collection. Selects materials in one or more areas of expertise and serves as a faculty liaison. Serves as a member of the regular Olin Reference Desk coverage rotation. Acts as the primary Wesleyan representative on the CTW Collections Group to explore consortial purchase options for monographic materials that will increase access while reducing cost-per-use. Serves the Wesleyan community through library and campus-wide committees. Participates actively in regional and national professional organizations and contributes to the profession. Minimum Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS; Three or more years’ experience working in an academic library;Supervisory experience; Experience using the acquisitions or cataloging module of an Integrated Library System; Expertise in library acquisitions as well as knowledge of emerging trends in scholarly communication; Demonstrated time management and organizational skills; Demonstrated oral and written communication skills with a variety of campus and other constituents; Experience using financial systems, spreadsheet applications and other productivity applications. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of academic publishing practices; Experience with international library acquisitions; Familiarity with Voyager Integrated Library System; Background in English Literature; Experience working with faculty.
