This year it's the Baltimore Ravens against the San Francisco 49ers—or if you're inclined to credit their respective medical teams, it's <a href="http://www.medstarhealth.org/body.cfm?id=556775&action=detail&ref=62" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">MedStar Union Memorial</a> vs. <a href="http://stanfordhospital.org/49ers/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">Stanford Hospital & Clinics</a>. The Ravens and 49ers are among the 23 NFL teams with "official" health care providers. (That figure is a hand count that the league declined to confirm.) These arrangements differ, but the standard deal includes reduced-rate medical care and/or a payment from the hospital to the team in exchange for the medical provider getting to ballyhoo the affiliation in its marketing. "The halo effect is huge," Lew Lyon, vice president of the Ravens-affiliated MedStar Sports Medicine, tells me. "Friends will call me and say, 'Can you get me into see one of the Ravens docs?' And they're very accessible. For one, by league policy, individual players are free to opt out of any official team arrangement and see another medical provider, as the Ravens' Ray Lewis <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/ravens-insider/bal-ray-lewis-has-triceps-surgery-placed-on-injured-reserve-designated-for-return-20121017,0,6689645.story" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">did this year</a> when he had surgery on his triceps (and when the linebacker <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl/news/20130129/the-strange-lab-that-lured-numerous-athletes/?sct=hp_t11_a2&eref=sihp" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">allegedly ingested deer-antler spray</a> to aid in his comeback). But consider the logjam for a physician in this setting. Privacy, confidentiality, speed of recuperation, treatment regimens—all of them stand to suffer when players see a doctor employed by an organization that prefers they return to work ASAP. Then imagine this added conflict: The doctor who just cleared you for duty was so thrilled to have the gig that she paid your employer for the privilege. Now you're getting closer to <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20112378/ns/business-sports_biz/t/unholy-alliance-nfl-doctors-marketing/#.UPbH4Sd9LE1" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">the situation many pro athletes face</a>. Put yourself in their cleats for a moment. Would you want to be treated by a doctor who had your employer's profitability anywhere on her list of concerns? Yet it's standard for teams to sell their affiliations to the highest bidder. After the New York Yankees won the 1999 World Series, the team solicited $1.5 million for its health care marketing rights. Among the hospitals to decline that honor was the Yankees' longtime care provider, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Its executive vice president told the <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; ">Daily News</em>: "Even if we were flush, I'm not sure I would do it. I'm not comfortable with that kind of deal, and I don't think it would necessarily be good for the institution." Other doctors have voiced similar concerns. Then-Atlanta Falcons team doctor Andrew Bishop <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/18/sports/sports-medicine-sports-turnaround-the-team-doctors-now-pay-the-team.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">told the <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; ">New York Times</em> in 2004</a> that he would resign if the team entered a hospital sponsorship deal: "It compromises you as a physician. Marty Barrett, a player and a patient, tore his ACL during the 1989 pennant race, and later won a suit against Pappas in which the player claimed that the doctor/owner disclosed to Barrett neither the extent of his injuries nor the time needed for proper recovery. A <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1007355/index.htm" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">1995 <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; ">Sports Illustrated</em> report</a> on Pappas and other team docs cited a Chicago Bears doctor who botched a knee operation and then tried erasing part of a videotape of the surgery so as not to lose his contract with the team. No less than Bill Walton, Dick Butkus, and Carlton Fisk also believe their injuries worsened when team physicians hustled them back into the lineup. (Lucie's employer,<a href="http://www.joionline.net/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute</a>, is still the team's "exclusive sports medicine partner" after winning its bid for that right.) Novak suffered a bone bruise that the lawsuit claimed Lucie squeezed and scraped at. Novak played hurt, which led to infection, profuse bleeding and, ultimately, his retirement. John Jurkovic, a teammate of Novak's in Jacksonville, described the health culture that coach Tom Coughlin fostered there: "[The team trainer] would never intervene on a player's behalf. He was browbeaten. Coughlin controlled him. That's who has no spine. He's a puppet." Novak said Coughlin was prone to kvetching that injured players were "sick, lazy and lame." Weeks before St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile died of a heart attack during the 2002 season, the team's official health care provider had published a publicity shot of him with a Washington University doctor as evidence of the hospital's bona fides. The doctor, George A. Paletta, explained soon after Kile's death that a normal battery of tests for a 33-year-old athlete wouldn't have caught the 90 percent blockage in two of Kile's arteries. <a href="http://espn.go.com/gen/s/2002/0912/1430969.html" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">ESPN.com found doctors who disagreed</a>, saying Kile's father's fatal stroke at 44 should've prompted a stress test for the pitcher. But it's worth noting that there's a lot at stake here beyond merely keeping players upright. These multiyear contracts include marketing components such as gate sponsorship, in-stadium signage, presence at league health events, training camp sponsorship, training facility sponsorship, athlete and coach endorsements, as well as medical components beyond just caring for players and their families. MedStar, for example, also has the contract to provide medical services at Ravens home games, a setting that MedStar Sports Medicine VP Lew Lyon describes as a war zone, albeit one imagined by Joseph Heller. He recalled one incident in which a woman aspirated on a chicken bone and went into cardiac arrest. The medics got the bone out and got her heart going again. When they tried to move her to a hospital, she threw a fit, saying she'd paid to see the game. "They didn't even sell chicken wings at the stadium," Lyon said. You don't assume that all NFL players drink Bud Light or drive GM trucks just because <a href="http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2012/02/20/Research-and-Ratings/NFL-Sponsor-Loyalty.aspx" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(86, 129, 140); text-decoration: none; ">those brands sponsor the league</a>, and no one is harmed if you're that gullible anyway. Health care is different. Such branding implies that players trust those doctors with the most vital service they can get in a high-risk occupation. The truth is something else. Players may have their own favorite surgeons. Or they may not trust the doctors' competing allegiances to patient health and management's demands. BlackBerry 10: Not All The Right Moves

Don't think for a minute, however, that Balsillie and Lazaridis played a large role in bringing BlackBerry 10 to the market. It launched a new smartphone platform, new smartphones, new features and a new company (based on the name change and other factors).</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">What BlackBerry Got Right:</strong></div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">1. The hardware.</strong> They aren't perfect, but the Z10 and Q10 are decent smartphones. They don't have the high-quality appeal of the iPhone 5, but they're easily the nicest BlackBerrys brought to market. In particular, the fact that the company was smart enough to introduce an all-touch device and a touch+QWERTY device to bridge two different user groups shows that it is thinking about winning over new users as well as retaining its loyal fan base. These devices have enough appeal that some may think twice about picking up an Android handset or Windows Phone.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">2. Carrier partners.</strong> BlackBerry has 160 carriers signed up worldwide to support BB10. That's incredible. The four major carriers in the U.S. (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon Wireless) are all on board, and even some prepaid carriers (Virgin Mobile USA) are on board, as well. BB10 will be available everywhere. That's good.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">3. Content partners.</strong> BlackBerry trotted out a huge list of companies, such as music and movie studios, that will create or offer content for BB10. That's important. If there's one thing Apple and Google have proven, it is that consumers are comfortable purchasing content from their devices.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">4. Enterprise Stuff.</strong> Need I say more than BlackBerry Safeguard and BlackBerry Balance? These are the tools enterprise customers need to better manage their employees' work and personal data. Together with BES 10, RIM has a strong enterprise story (just as it has historically).</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">Where BlackBerry Disappointed:</strong></div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">1. Availability.</strong> Sure, BB10 devices are hitting the U.K. and Canada this week, but the rest of the world doesn't follow for nearly a month. In fact, the Z10 won't reach U.S. carriers until mid-March, and the Q10 won't arrive until April. Heins blamed this on the time-consuming certification processes employed by U.S. carriers. The problem is, Mobile World Congress takes place before the Z10 goes on sale, where companies such as HTC, LG, ZTE, Samsung, Huawei and others are primed to debut their latest and greatest Android devices.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">2. Apps.</strong> BlackBerry listed a huge number of apps that will be available at launch, many of which are today's most popular iOS and Android apps. It is launching with some 70,000 altogether. Despite the strong starting list, there are major omissions, such as Netflix, Instagram, SnapChat and so on.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">3. Pricing.</strong> Pricing will vary by region, but in the U.S. it looks like the Z10 is going to cost $199 with a new contract and the Q10 is going to cost $149 with a new contract. These prices aren't too bad, but they could be more aggressive. For example, the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X, two high-end Windows Phones, sell for $99. BlackBerry should have been more aggressive with subsidies. After all, there are plenty of excellent smartphones that cost in the $49 to $149 range.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">4. Fuzzy Consumer Play.</strong> Sure, BB10 will win over consumers here and there, but there's nothing compelling about BB10 to convince iOS or Android users to jump ship. Android and iOS are widely supported and have massive ecosystems that consumers can depend on. BB10 is unproven and unknown.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;">It is clear that BlackBerry has been working very, very hard during the last 12 months. BlackBerry 10 is a great achievement, and the Z10 and Q10 will surely have appeal when they reach the market. It's doubtful BlackBerry will win over iOS and Android users in the U.S., at least initially. It will be interesting to watch how BB10 impacts sales of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform, though. Right now, that's the story to watch. Which will become the third player in the smartphone platform race: RIM or Microsoft?</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;">At this moment, it is difficult to predict the outcome.</div><br /></div>

Underwear…or as Jay called them, skivvies.  The word “panties” gives me a serious case of the goo.<br /><br /><b>Bologna:</b>  It’s lunch meat folks.  There is no sense, even if it is spelled pretentiously, to call baloney, Buh-Lo-Nuh.  If I hear a person refer to the poor man’s steak as, Buh-Lo-Nuh, I turn red, piss my pants, and look for a baloney rind with which to strangle them.<br /><br /><b>Pro-Active:</b>  Uuuuuuuch!!  Pro-Active literally (sorry Jay) means<b><i> for action</i></b>, but you know what? Most people who claim to be Pro-Active, typically want to hold a meaningless meeting and talk about the action of which they are for, yet nothing ever comes of it.<br /><br /><b>Sorghum:</b>  It’s a fucking grass…a grass that can be turned into a molasses type fodder thing.  Ick…Say it. Sorrrrrr Gummmmm.  Merely on the level of pronunciation, it's an icky and sticky word.  I bet sorghum is a big commodity down in Jay’s part of the woods, but I would never hold that against him.<br /><br /><b>Breast(s):</b>  Seriously?  Breasts?  They’re boobs…tits…fun bags!!  To hell with the clinical and sterile term, breast.  They can spurt out milk and are fun to play with.  Boobs and/or Tits, are much better names for such a jocular and happiness yielding creation.<br /><br />Another thing that Jayman mentioned yesterday…Sammy, addy, and pressie.  In that vein, I would like to add another…<b><i>“Bestie”.</i></b><br /><br /><i>“I want to show you all a picture of my newest bestie.”</i>  You mean your new best friend?<br /><br />How’s about I pour a gallon of fucking sorghum all over you and your "bestie's" bodies and place you both on a fire ant colony you idiot!?  Fuckin’<i>“bestie”.</i><br /><br /><b>Hitler: </b> Oh Dear God!!  I think I like Adolf Hitler more than all of these present day politicians and political pundits who invoke his name in order to elicit outrage and score a political point that is always way off base. Hitler was a nut, who had one nut, and killed millions.  Neither George W. Dublin City

<p>I had a meeting in town today.  As I walked home I took a few photos.
