At Santo Niño Church, near the waterfront in the flattened city of Tacloban, birds flitted between the rafters overhead as women moved through the pews with collection plates. At the end of mass, the Roman Catholic congregation broke into applause. Rosario Capidos, 55, sat crying in one row, hugging her nine-year-old grandson, Cyrich. Capidos had been sheltering at home with nine other members of her family when Haiyan struck on November 8. As the waters rose, she floated her three grandchildren on a slab of styrofoam through a road flooded with debris and shipping containers to a nearby Chinese temple. Philippine authorities and international aid agencies face a mounting humanitarian crisis, with the number of people displaced by the catastrophe estimated at 4 million, up from 900,000 late last week. Nearly half a million houses were damaged by the storm, half of them destroyed, according to the United Nations. While aid packages have begun to reach more remote areas, much of it carried by helicopters brought by the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, the United Nations said people were still going hungry in some mountainous provinces. President Benigno Aquino, caught off guard by the scale of the disaster, is scheduled to visit affected areas on Sunday. He has been criticized for the slow pace of aid distribution and unclear estimates of casualties, especially in Tacloban, capital of hardest-hit Leyte province. There are 1,186 people missing, according to the national count. The official death toll has only risen by 60 since Friday, giving hope that initial local estimates of 10,000 dead were overstated. The government estimated damage to infrastructure and agriculture at about 10 billion pesos ($ 230 million), the bulk of it in the farming sector. The United Nations warned that economic and human cost could rise if aid did not reach farmers in rice-growing regions in time for the next planting season in December and January. Most important was that he showed that talent and durability when Louisville needed them most. Brown ran for a career-high 137 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the third quarter, and No. 20 Louisville held on to beat Houston 20-13 on Saturday night. Listless on both sides of the ball and trailing 13-10 at halftime, Louisville turned to Brown, who carried 11 times in the third quarter for 50 yards and a 3-yard touchdown. He finished with 27 carries. 'My hat's off to the offensive line,' Brown said. 'The tight ends and receivers did a great job of springing me for the long runs. 'When a running back gets the momentum, you got to keep running him.' Houston needed just two drives to tie the game, driving 48 yards for Kyle Bullard's 46-yard field goal and 60 yards ending in Kenneth Farrow's 4-yard run with 6:35 left before halftime. Those drives were telling as the Cougars' no-huddle offense seemed to confuse the Cardinals' defense, which struggled to keep up. Defensively, Houston succeeded in pressuring Bridgewater, sacking him twice and keeping him on the run at other times. Two key plays helped the Cougars take a 13-10 lead. The first was Michaelee Harris' muffed punt recovered at the Louisville 39 by Trevon Stewart, who entered leading the nation with eight turnovers. Louisville appeared to escape damage when Hakeem Smith intercepted O'Korn's tipped pass at the 15 and returned it to the 35. But Cardinals defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin was penalized for roughing O'Korn, wiping out the turnover and setting up first down at the 24 and leading to Bullard's 22-yard field goal with 25 seconds left in the half. The gaming industry last month brought in $791.1 million in retail sales of new hardware, software, and accessories, up 5 percent over October 2012, NPD said. NPD's Liam Callahan estimated that used and rental sales for the month totaled $89 million while digital format sales like mobile apps and social network games brought in an impressive $491 million, bringing total U.S. video game sales to 'just over' $1.3 billion in October. The retail increases were largely driven by software sales, which climbed 10 percent from a year ago to $495.1 million, and accessory sales, which grew a modest 1 percent to $136.9 million. Hardware sales expectantly declined in October, falling 8 percent to $482.5 million as gamers waited for new systems to hit the market, though portable hardware sales minimized decreases in this segment of the market. October marked the sixth consecutive month that the Nintendo 3DS led overall hardware sales. As for consoles, the Xbox 360 moved back to the top spot after PlayStation 3 took the crown in September. Meanwhile, growth on the software side was driven by continued strong sales of Grand Theft Auto 5 and the launch of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y , Callahan said. GTA 5 was the top-selling game for the second month in a row, selling 'just fewer' than 1.1 million units, while Pokémon X and Pokémon Y came in second and third, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 games of the month were: Battlefield 4 in fourth place, followed by: Batman: Arkham Origins, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, NBS 2K14, Skylanders SWAP Force, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, and WWE 2K14. Looking ahead, gaming industry sales are sure to get a boost for the rest of the year thanks to the PS4, which hits stores today, and Xbox One, which goes on sale Nov. 22. 'With the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One, we hope to see positive trends over November and December which would lead to an increase in software sales for the year,' Callahan said. Photograph: James Perrin/Rex Features </div> <div id="article-body-blocks"> London has become a cycling city – and Britain something of a cycling nation – by default. The recent surge in its popularity has been a grassroots phenomenon, prompted by overcrowded and expensive public transport, a large number of young, talented people on low wages and a wider recognition of its health and environmental benefits. As demonstrated by the recent toll of cycling fatalities, the response from the authorities has been slow, inadequate and, in the case of the appalling Cycle Superhighway 2 in east London, counterproductive. There has been no sense of urgency about improving cyclists’ safety. Transport for London’s long-awaited freight strategy to reduce lorry journeys at peak times to avoid conflict with cyclists has not materialised, despite the fact that during the Olympics a very similar scheme was successfully deployed. While cycling remains relatively safe, TfL’s statistics show that every journey carries a 10% greater risk of resulting in a serious injury or death than in 2008. The Cycling Vision drawn up by Boris Johnson’s cycling tsar, the journalist Andrew Gilligan, is commendable, but lacks both urgency and the coherent thread that would deliver safe cycling for all. One of London’s rival global cities, New York, is demonstrating what could be done immediately. The city’s transport commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, has embarked on a radical plan to improve the lot of pedestrians and cyclists. Times Square, for decades a permanent traffic jam, has been turned into a space so peaceful that the city authorities installed deckchairs in the summer; local businesses have boomed. Crucially, it’s not just Times Square – 50 spaces in suburban centres have been improved in the same way. All this has been done quickly and experimentally, allowing unsuccessful aspects to be reversed, using principally, as Ms Sadik-Khan put it, “paint and plastic” to reroute traffic and create usable spaces. This is not, as she emphasises in a brilliant TED talk available online, just about cycling. Creating a city fit for cyclists also ensures it is a better place in which to live and work. The lesson from New York is that things can change and quickly. What is needed is a strong political vision and the boldness to implement it. Take Seville, often reckoned too hot and cramped for cyclists, which has gone from 2,000 cycle trips per day to 72,000 in seven years, thanks to mayor Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín’s strategy of building cycle lanes, reducing road space for cars and launching a cycle hire scheme. That answers the naysayers who argue that London is not Amsterdam or its streets are too narrow. Britain is dependent for its future on attracting bright young people, They are the ones most likely to hop on their bikes and consequently they make up a disproportionate number of these tragedies. They deserve the infrastructure to travel safely, arriving at their destination in one piece, rather than having their lives shattered by a 40-tonne truck or a double-decker bus – and we should recognise it is our duty to safeguard their futures in this way. The worst home loss in Brown's 16 years at Texas just undid all of that. Case McCoy threw for 221 yards but had three interceptions and No. 12 Oklahoma State beat the Longhorns 38-13 on Saturday. The blowout dealt Texas its worst loss at home under Brown and did so at a time when questions over his job security had just begun quieting down amid a midseason resurgence. But in getting clobbered by the Cowboys, the Longhorns looked more like the shaky team that fired its defensive coordinator between early losses to BYU and Ole Miss before turning things around. Now they'll have to do so again but with just two games left, including playing at No. 4 Baylor. 'I'm disappointed,' Brown said. 'I don't get stunned about anything anymore.' A resurgent Texas had just returned to the Top 25 after a two-month absence. Now the Longhorns (7-3, 6-1) are almost certain to fall unranked again, but more costly in this blowout was relinquishing control of their destiny in the Big 12. Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more as the Cowboys (9-1, 6-1) won in Austin for the third straight time. They've now pulled off six straight wins since an early stumble against West Virginia, and have kept looking like the Big 12 contenders that many predicted to start the season. 'We understand how big the game is. I'm not sure if at times everybody wants to say that that's a heck of a win, but it is what it is,' Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. 'You very seldom go on the road and win by more than three touchdowns with teams that are undefeated in conference play in the middle of November.' Oklahoma State still has yet to face undefeated Baylor, which was playing Texas Tech later Saturday. The Cowboys host the Bears next week. Chelf threw for 197 yards and an interception. He was also Oklahoma State's leading rusher, running for 95 yards that were largely piled up with long sprints from the shotgun that cut through the middle of the Texas defense. Texas running back Malcolm Brown ran for 79 yards and a touchdown. Texas' previous worst loss at home under Brown was a 34-12 defeat by UCLA in 2010. The Longhorns now have now been blown out at home twice this season after losing 44-23 to Ole Miss in September. A close first half turned into a runaway behind two near-misses by Texas in a span of less than a minute. First up was Texas safety Adrian Phillips missing a would-be interception in the end zone, with the ball ricocheting off his hands and into the arms of Tracy Moore for an Oklahoma State touchdown. Even more deflating for Texas was the ensuing Texas drive, when Cowboys safety Justin Gilbert picked off McCoy just 18 seconds before halftime and returned it 43 yards for another score. McCoy finished 26 for 39 for 221 yards and would throw two more interceptions. Linebacker Caleb Lavey picked off one of them, running it back to Texas' 21 to set up a Chelf touchdown pass to Charlie Moore on the very next play. 'The quarterback goes out and throws three picks, you're not going to win the ballgame,' McCoy said. 'It's very rare that happens. So it's on me, my team knows it's on me, and we're going to get it fixed and go win.' Charlie Moore led all Oklahoma State receivers with six catches for 83 yards. Oklahoma State played without leading wide receiver Josh Stewart, who didn't make the trip after appearing to injure his left leg in a win over Kansas last week. Stewart is also the nation's leading punt returner, but aside from understudy David Glidden bobbling a few catches, the Cowboys hardly noticed his absence. On hand to watch Brown's worst loss ever at Royal Memorial Stadium was new athletic director Steve Patterson, who was hired from Arizona State earlier this month to replace DeLoss Dodds. Patterson has said he doesn't intend to 'make change just for the sake of making changes' as he takes over the nation's wealthiest athletic department. Brown began the season talking about Texas being ready to compete for a national title again after a run of uneven seasons since losing to Alabama in the title game in 2009. But the Longhorns instead started out by losing badly to BYU on the road and getting blown out at home by Ole Miss. Speculation about Brown's future intensified after revelations that the agent of Alabama coach Nick Saban had talked to University of Texas regents a few days after the Crimson Tide won the national championship last season. The warning covers about 15,000 recalled guidewires, which are inserted through an artery and used to guide other devices into place, such as stents to hold open blocked arteries. A recall of the guidewires began Oct. 21 after Medtronic received reports of four complaints, including one patient who went into cardiac arrest but was resuscitated, company spokesman Joseph McGrath said Saturday. The recall notice warned hospitals and distributors worldwide that coating on the guidewires could break off, which could raise the possibility of blocking a blood vessel. The wires are coated to make them slide through blood vessels more easily. Medtronic announced Friday night that the Food and Drug Administration had classified the recall as Class I, a category reserved for products with reasonable potential to cause serious injury or death. The Minneapolis company said the recall affected certain lots made since April. The company said it has taken steps to prevent new shipments of the wires.
