<p>I had a meeting in town today.  As I walked home I took a few photos. "Deconstructivist Architecture" at 25

The show featured drawings and models for ten major projects by seven architects: Coop Himmelb(l)au, Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, and Bernard Tschumi. Three have won Pritzker Prizes since 1988, and all are well known now, but at the time they were hardly familiar names.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/8410538474/" title="Rooftop Remodeling by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="Rooftop Remodeling" height="512" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8077/8410538474_14d018c969_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br />MoMA has put some pieces from their collection that were in the 1988 exhibition back on display in a small room in the contemporary galleries on the second floor. Pieces like Coop Himmelb(l)au's model of the Rooftop Remodeling in Vienna (pictured here) are also accompanied by some pieces that were not in the show, like Eisenman's drawings for House VI. The few drawings and models on display aren't much of a 25-year celebration of what can be seen as a very influential show (not as influential as the <i>International Style</i> exhibition of 1932, but still important considering the subsequent careers of the seven architects and their influence on countless others), but MoMA did at least hold a panel discussion with Eisenman, Tschumi, Wigley, and curator Barry Bergdoll. Helmets for Ski and Snowboard Safety - NYTimes.com

Although they hadn't informed the volunteers, their primary aim was to determine whether wearing a helmet increased people's willingness to take risks, in which case helmets could actually decrease safety on the slopes.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">What they found was reassuring.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">To many of us who hit the slopes with, in my case, literal regularity - I'm an ungainly novice snowboarder - the value of wearing a helmet can seem self-evident. They protect your head from severe injury. During the Big Air finals at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo., this past weekend, for instance, 23-year-old Icelandic snowboarder Halldor Helgason over-rotated on a triple back flip, landed head-first on the snow, and was briefly knocked unconscious. But like the other competitors he was wearing a helmet, and didn't fracture his skull.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">Indeed, studies have concluded that helmets reduce the risk of a serious head injury by as much as 60 percent. But a surprising number of safety experts and snowsport enthusiasts remain unconvinced that helmets reduce overall injury risk.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">Why? A <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19225972" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; ">telling 2009 survey of ski patrollers</a> from across the country found that 77 percent did not wear helmets because they worried that the headgear could reduce their peripheral vision, hearing and response times, making them slower and clumsier. In addition, many worried that if they wore helmets, less-adept skiers and snowboarders might do likewise, feel invulnerable and engage in riskier behavior on the slopes.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">In the past several years, a number of researchers have attempted to resolve these concerns, for or against helmets. And in almost all instances, helmets have proved their value.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">In the Innsbruck speed experiment, the researchers found that people whom the questionnaires showed to be risk takers skied and rode faster than those who were by nature cautious. No surprise.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">But wearing a helmet did not increase people's speed, as would be expected if the headgear encouraged risk taking. Cautious people were slower than risk-takers, whether they wore helmets or not; and risk-takers were fast, whether their heads were helmeted or bare.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">Interestingly, the skiers and riders who were the most likely, in general, to don a helmet were the most expert, the men and women with the most talent and hours on the slopes. Peripheral vision and response times are a serious safety concern in a sport where skiers and riders rapidly converge from multiple directions.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">But when researchers asked snowboarders and skiers to wear caps, helmets, goggles or various combinations of each for <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21440468" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; ">a 2011 study</a> and then had them sit before a computer screen and press a button when certain images popped up, they found that volunteers' peripheral vision and reaction times were virtually unchanged when they wore a helmet, compared with wearing a hat. Goggles slightly reduced peripheral vision and increased response times. Foodies eat things not available at fast food joints or food carts. Even though foodies tend to be a bit pretentious and hipster-like, I don’t really mind them, just the word.<br /><br /><b>Panties:</b> The correct word is “skivvies.” Skivvies is a much more festive word than “panties.” If you say “I’d love to see her in her panties” I would assume you were talking about a girl. But, if you say “I’d love to see her in her skivvies” I would assume she is not only a woman, but a woman doing something fun and exciting. <br /><br /><b>Potty:</b> Do you have to go wee-wee? Or make dookie? No? Then you don’t have to go “potty.” Just excuse yourself or say “I gotta take a leak” or “I gotta wiz” or jump up and yell “PEE BREAK!”<br /><br /><b>Squishy: </b>Pretty much anything that is squishy will also be <b>slimy</b>. I’m not a fan of either. Also, if something is squishy it probably squeaks and makes other very annoying noises. If something is squishy (and therefore slimy) I will have to use food safe gloves to handle it.<br /><br /><b>Vomit: </b>This word is just too descriptive. It’s allows me to visualize what you did and even recall what it might smell like from previous vomiting by other people. Let’s just stick with “I got sick and threw up” Thank you. <br /><br /><b>Guacamole:</b> I can’t stand either the word or the slimy (and therefore squishy) green disgusting food-like substance.<br /><br /><b>Plethora:</b> This word is just used too often by people who think they’re soooo fancy-pants for using it. Enough!<br /><br /><b>Bling: </b>Again, enough with this word. People are using to describe rings they find at the bottom of a Cracker Jacks box. If you’re not a gangsta or a rapper you don’t have any bling. Sorry. <br /><br /><b>Chum:</b> Really? A word that can describe a really good friend OR chopped up fish, blood and guts used to attract sharks? I don’t think. And, if your local Mafia boss ever calls you “chum” you better go into hiding.<br /><br />Using “<b>Sammy</b>” for “Sandwich” or “<b>Addy</b>” for “Address” or “<b>Pressies</b>” for “Presents.” They all bug the shit outta me.<br /><br /><b>Prudent:</b> I don’t like prudes. Or prunes, not that they are related to prudes, but the words are similar so I just thought I’d throw that in there. Anyway, “prudent” means do something a prude would do. Or at least it does to me. Screw that.<br /><br /><b>Literally:</b> “OMG! That list was so funny I <i>literally</i> laughed my ass off!” … No, you didn’t.<br /><br />Okay, there you go. Words I can’t stand. With Great Ranking Comes Great Responsibility

I still can't believe that in the 20 years it's taken Michigan basketball to return to the #1 spot, only 26 different teams have been the top-ranked team in the nation. Twenty six!<br /><br />But it finally happened: Michigan took the top spot again. With a Duke loss at Miami last week, and two Michigan wins over Purdue and Illinois, there wasn't any real doubt over who was the mightiest team in the land...for the AP. I don't know many news outlets that still use the USA Today Coaches Poll, but that poll has Kansas ranked number one.<br /><br />I'm not here to talk about that, though. In many people's eyes, this week is a huge one for Michigan. Yes, it is the number one team in the land. But they have to <i>defend</i> that ranking against one of the top teams in the nation - and who had been #1 for the first month of the season - Indiana. The Hoosiers have taken their hits - first against in-state rival Butler, then against Wisconsin, and finally in a near defeat by Michigan State last weekend - but don't doubt their ability to come out hard against the Wolverines in Bloomington on Saturday night.<br /><br />In recent games, Michigan has started out slowly, or allowed the other team to come out fast. Against Illinois, large runs in the beginning of the game were quickly cut down by the Fighting Illini, while against Purdue, Michigan couldn't seem to stop the Boilermakers' hot shooting. Earlier, Minnesota hung around for more than 20 minutes until Michigan finally slammed the door.<br /><br />Playing in Bloomington is dangerous, especially with a crowd that desperately wants its team to get back to that number one ranking. Michigan needs to come out pumped up and ready for the onslaught. More importantly, Trey Burke has to keep doing what he does best: coaching from the floor and finding the best possible way to get points. He can't overdo it - teams have dissected game tape and he isn't a surprise anymore. There are plenty of other scorers on this team that he can feed. (Nik Stauskas, anyone?)<br /><br />I'm not dismissing tomorrow's game against Northwestern in the slightest. They managed Northwestern's 1-3-1 zone pretty well on January 3 (likely because Michigan runs a 1-3-1 themselves), and the Wildcats couldn't hit the broadside of a barn - and that issue probably won't be the case tomorrow. I am looking forward to the Indiana game more because Indiana is the High Ranking Team that Michigan hasn't really encountered this season. (I don't count Minnesota as a HRT...especially with that 4-game losing streak) How is Michigan going to handle the pressure? Not only is this one of the top five teams in the country, Michigan has a reputation to uphold!<br /><br />Take the challenge and run, Michigan. Show a national, Saturday, prime-time audience that you were meant for this position.<br /><br />After twenty years, it finally feels like now is the time for this team.<br /><br /><br />
