As he goes on to say, computers were intended to overcome a lot of government restrictions.<br /><br />Wozniak said inventors created computers to free people up and give them instant communication anywhere in the world. With them, people could share any thought they had freely. Inventors didn’t realize that in the digital world, there were a lot of ways to use technology to control people, snoop on them and make things possible that weren’t, Woz noted.<br /><br />Things used to be different though. As an example, the Apple co-founder recalled the old days of mailing letters. You simply licked the envelope, sealed it and when you received an envelope that was still sealed, it meant nobody had seen it – you could have a private communication. Now because that same message is being sent via e-mail, it’s no longer private and anyone can listen.<br /><br />Along the same lines, Woz said he was a fan of someone like NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. He said he felt the same way about Snowden that he felt about Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg. Ellsberg is a man that Woz said changed his life and taught him a lot.<br /><br />

A Russian Foreign Ministry official declined immediate comment.<br /><br />US authorities have charged Snowden with theft of US government property, unauthorised communication of national defence information and wilful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorised person, with the latter two charges falling under the US Espionage Act.<br /><br />The United States had asked Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China, to send him home.

You can even listen to music with it while swimming.<br /><br />Similar Guts, Better Exterior<br /><br />The spec differences between the Galaxy S4 Active and the standard Galaxy S4 (which I dubbed the best Android phone ever) are minute. Rather than the S4's Super AMOLED screen, the Galaxy S4 Active uses a regular LCD screen. The resolution is still the same at 1920 x 1080, however.<br /><br />The other internal change is that the camera is 8-megapixel rather than 13. The 8-megapixel camera does have a special aqua mode, however, for underwater photography.<br /><br />The battery, processor and RAM are all the same in the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 Active.<br /><br />A bigger difference, however, is in the phone's exterior. The Galaxy S4 Active is slightly thicker (it's very hard to tell the difference) and as a result feels more substantial in the hand. The polycarbonate shell around the phone and its back also feels more substantial, eschewing the feather-light and plasticky feel of the S3 and S4.<br /><br />The two phones are so similar, its enough to make us wonder why Samsung didn't just consider making at least some of these features standard on the regular Galaxy S4. Maybe it wouldn't be necessary to make the phone submergible in a meter of water, but having it work in the rain would be great.<br /><br />The Galaxy S4 Active is an AT&T exclusive in the United States and will be coming to other parts of the world later this summer.

The team has placed in third five times over the years (among 28 worldwide participants), but with a recent change to the challenge's rules — vehicles now require four requires instead of three — the University of Michigan is hoping its new creation, the Generation, will finally make it to the top.<br /><br />The car, which measures at about 177 inches long and 43 inches tall, weighs in at about 500 pounds when the driver is in place. "The driver is now positioned on the left side of the vehicle instead of in the center. Due to the addition of the forth wheel, it may not be faster, but our goal was to reduce the impact of the additional wheel as much as possible."<br /><br />The lopsided design of the newly-redesigned Generation aims to boost efficiency on the road. The new rules mandate that the wheels can't be next to each other, as they are on traditional cars. Otherwise, the driver's seat would hang lower than the surface and mess up the car's speed.

One apparently isn't enough so on top of the Galaxy S4 Mini and the Galaxy S4 Zoom is the Galaxy S4 Active. Read our hands-on review to find out what it's all about.<br /><br />There's a lot about the Galaxy S4 Active which is identical to the flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone. It's got the same 5in Full HD screen but with a less impressive TFT panel rather than SuperAMOLED, 1.9GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Software is also the same with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with features like Air View and Smart Pause.<br /><br />Specially designed ports and flaps keep the dust and water out, and although we haven't dunked the Active in water ourselves we can confirm via a demonstration on stage at Samsung's launch event that the phone didn't break. It is 9.1mm and 153g which isn't bad though.<br /><br />We like the rugged look of the Galaxy S4 Active and despite the large stylish visible screws on the back, the rear cover can still be removed to access the SIM card, microSD card and battery.<br /><br />As you can see, there are three physical buttons below the screen instead of the usual one. When submerged in the wet stuff, the Galaxy S4 Active's screen can't be used. However, an Aqua Mode means you can use the volume buttons to take snaps and photos are optimised for underwater conditions. We'd rather have a dedicated camera button, but it's not the end of the world.

People with knowledge of the plans said Redmond held talks with retailers as well as other tech companies about all sorts of ideas like a unified shopping cart and broad shipping options but ultimately, the plans fizzled.<br /><br />The incubation, as a Microsoft spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal, was called Project Brazil – no doubt a reference to Amazon. Microsoft was even planning to subsidize the cost of goods using advertising dollars from Bing. We are told the service would have been integrated into future versions of Windows as well as on tablets and eventually, other devices like the Xbox One.<br /><br />It’s unclear exactly when or why Microsoft pulled the plug on Project Brazil. While it might have been a good idea for customers looking to save a few bucks, it probably wasn’t in Microsoft’s best interest to move forward with the project. Considering that Microsoft accounted for less than four percent of all search ad revenue in 2012, subsidizing the price of goods might not have worked out so well.

Microsoft said learning about new exploitation techniques earlier helps them improve security by leaps instead of simply handling them one at a time as they crop up after the fact.<br /><br />A separate program called BlueHat Bonus for Defense will award up to $50,000 for defensive ideas that accompany a qualifying Mitigation Bypass submission. Naturally this program will work in conjunction with the above mentioned bounty and could be a way for individuals to earn even more money from their work.<br /><br />Finally, Microsoft is offering up to $11,000 for critical vulnerabilities that affect Internet Explorer 11 Preview in Windows 8.1 Preview.<br /><br />All three bounties will launch on June 26, 2013, we’re told. The timeframe for the Mitigation Bypass Bounty and the BlueHat Bonus for Defense bounty is listed as ongoing while the Internet Explorer 11 bounty will only be active during the first 30 days of the beta period (from June 26 through July 26).

Needless to say, future APIs that fall under this badge will not be accompanied by full documentation or support, but it will be targeted to those niche developers who prefer to play around with some features found on Sony devices. The API will let the illumination bar change its color, the frequency of pulses, and indulge in some pre-defined fading patterns. As for the compatible handsets that support the Illumination bar API fully, they are the Xperia SP, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia UL, and Xperia A.

Taken from an interview with Digitimes, Li Gong, Senior Vice President of Mobile Devices and President of Mozilla’s Asia Operations, mentioned that they will not have any plans of collaborating with ODMs for making and selling own-branded Firefox OS smartphones. I guess in the same vein, as a disclaimer of sorts, should there be any Mozilla-branded smartphones out there, these have been said that they “would be primarily used as reference models rather than for large-scale sale.” I guess this would mean customers who are on the lookout for Firefox OS smartphones will have to settle for something cheap and low-end at the beginning, where among them include the ZTE Open and Alcatel OneTouch Fire, where the former has recently arrived at the FCC. Huawei, Sony and LG too, have revealed that they have plans to come up with a Firefox OS phone of their own, too.

After all, companies all have a reputation to protect, don’t they? Samsung has their Galaxy S4, HTC has their HTC One, but what about the likes of Chinese manufacturer Oppo? Oppo’s apparent flagship Android-powered smartphone is known as the Oppo Find 7, where it will continue from where the Oppo 5 left off. No prizes for guessing what the logical name for the Find 7’s successor would be when the time comes, I suppose, as Find 9 would be deemed to be the next best thing. Still, the rumored hardware specifications of the Oppo Find 7 have surfaced, where talk of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset have hit the Internet, where it will be accompanied by a 5” 1080p Full HD touchscreen display, an 8-megapixel shooter in front with a 13-megapixel camera at the back, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory, NFC support, and a massive 4,000mAh battery which would surely raise eyebrows – not to mention increase the thickness of its chassis. The Oppo Find 7 is said to hit the markets sometime in the middle of September onwards, so stay tuned.

A day after their announcement, we received an invitation to a press event taking place on August 7. Coincidence? We think not. The invitation sent to us says LG will host an international media event on August 7 in New York City, but as you’d expect, doesn’t disclose what exactly the company will be unveiling at the show. Considering LG’s recent announcement of using Snapdragon 800 chips, we think it’s safe to say the company has a new, more powerful Optimus G in the works. We’ve already marked our calendars for August 7, which may seem like a long time from now. Seeing as summer has officially kicked off today, we’re sure after attending a number of barbecues and trips to your local amusement park, the date will be upon us and we’ll finally learn what LG has up its sleeve. Now it looks like manufacturer Foxconn wants a piece of that action too and has reportedly hired 3,000 software engineers where they are expected to be experts in HTML5 and cloud computing. While Foxconn has been primarily known in the past to be the manufacturer for Apple’s iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, it seems that recently the company has been looking for alternative ways to making money, ultimately reducing their reliance on Apple and we guess the Firefox OS could be one way to do that. We’re not sure what Foxconn has planned with their software engineers – either design software for Foxconn’s own branded phone, or maybe create software in which they can then sell to other brands instead! Either way we’ll have to wait and see, but what do you guys think? Is the Firefox OS going to be the next big thing, or is iOS and Android too dominant at the moment?
