BlackBerry 10: Not All The Right Moves

In 12 months, they've taken the company from near-death to a position that could lead to renewed life. Before he announced anything specific, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins thanked his predecessors, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, for getting the company as far as they did before he took over in January 2012. Don't think for a minute, however, that Balsillie and Lazaridis played a large role in bringing BlackBerry 10 to the market. It is Heins' baby, and the news Wednesday is the result of his inexhaustible enthusiasm and drive to bring the new platform and smartphones to life.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;">Now that we've had a few hours for the details to sink in, let's sit back and look at just what BlackBerry has done, where it has succeeded and where it has not.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"></div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;">We laid out BlackBerry's accomplishments <a href="http://www.informationweek.com/mobility/smart-phones/blackberry-debuts-z10-q10-smartphones/240147339" style="color: #003bb0; outline: none medium;">earlier this week</a>. It launched a new smartphone platform, new smartphones, new features and a new company (based on the name change and other factors).</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">What BlackBerry Got Right:</strong></div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">1. The hardware.</strong> They aren't perfect, but the Z10 and Q10 are decent smartphones. They don't have the high-quality appeal of the iPhone 5, but they're easily the nicest BlackBerrys brought to market. In particular, the fact that the company was smart enough to introduce an all-touch device and a touch+QWERTY device to bridge two different user groups shows that it is thinking about winning over new users as well as retaining its loyal fan base. These devices have enough appeal that some may think twice about picking up an Android handset or Windows Phone.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">2. Carrier partners.</strong> BlackBerry has 160 carriers signed up worldwide to support BB10. That's incredible. The four major carriers in the U.S. (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon Wireless) are all on board, and even some prepaid carriers (Virgin Mobile USA) are on board, as well. BB10 will be available everywhere. That's good.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">3. Content partners.</strong> BlackBerry trotted out a huge list of companies, such as music and movie studios, that will create or offer content for BB10. That's important. If there's one thing Apple and Google have proven, it is that consumers are comfortable purchasing content from their devices.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">4. Enterprise Stuff.</strong> Need I say more than BlackBerry Safeguard and BlackBerry Balance? These are the tools enterprise customers need to better manage their employees' work and personal data. Together with BES 10, RIM has a strong enterprise story (just as it has historically).</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">Where BlackBerry Disappointed:</strong></div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">1. Availability.</strong> Sure, BB10 devices are hitting the U.K. and Canada this week, but the rest of the world doesn't follow for nearly a month. In fact, the Z10 won't reach U.S. carriers until mid-March, and the Q10 won't arrive until April. Heins blamed this on the time-consuming certification processes employed by U.S. carriers. The problem is, Mobile World Congress takes place before the Z10 goes on sale, where companies such as HTC, LG, ZTE, Samsung, Huawei and others are primed to debut their latest and greatest Android devices.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">2. Apps.</strong> BlackBerry listed a huge number of apps that will be available at launch, many of which are today's most popular iOS and Android apps. It is launching with some 70,000 altogether. Despite the strong starting list, there are major omissions, such as Netflix, Instagram, SnapChat and so on.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">3. Pricing.</strong> Pricing will vary by region, but in the U.S. it looks like the Z10 is going to cost $199 with a new contract and the Q10 is going to cost $149 with a new contract. These prices aren't too bad, but they could be more aggressive. For example, the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X, two high-end Windows Phones, sell for $99. BlackBerry should have been more aggressive with subsidies. After all, there are plenty of excellent smartphones that cost in the $49 to $149 range.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;"><strong style="font-style: inherit;">4. Fuzzy Consumer Play.</strong> Sure, BB10 will win over consumers here and there, but there's nothing compelling about BB10 to convince iOS or Android users to jump ship. Android and iOS are widely supported and have massive ecosystems that consumers can depend on. BB10 is unproven and unknown.</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;">It is clear that BlackBerry has been working very, very hard during the last 12 months. BlackBerry 10 is a great achievement, and the Z10 and Q10 will surely have appeal when they reach the market. It's doubtful BlackBerry will win over iOS and Android users in the U.S., at least initially. It will be interesting to watch how BB10 impacts sales of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform, though. Right now, that's the story to watch. Which will become the third player in the smartphone platform race: RIM or Microsoft?</div><div style="line-height: 1.4em !important; padding: 14px 0px 0px;">At this moment, it is difficult to predict the outcome.</div><br /></div>

Underwear…or as Jay called them, skivvies.  The word “panties” gives me a serious case of the goo.<br /><br /><b>Bologna:</b>  It’s lunch meat folks.  There is no sense, even if it is spelled pretentiously, to call baloney, Buh-Lo-Nuh.  If I hear a person refer to the poor man’s steak as, Buh-Lo-Nuh, I turn red, piss my pants, and look for a baloney rind with which to strangle them.<br /><br /><b>Pro-Active:</b>  Uuuuuuuch!!  Pro-Active literally (sorry Jay) means<b><i> for action</i></b>, but you know what? Most people who claim to be Pro-Active, typically want to hold a meaningless meeting and talk about the action of which they are for, yet nothing ever comes of it.<br /><br /><b>Sorghum:</b>  It’s a fucking grass…a grass that can be turned into a molasses type fodder thing.  Ick…Say it. Sorrrrrr Gummmmm.  Merely on the level of pronunciation, it's an icky and sticky word.  I bet sorghum is a big commodity down in Jay’s part of the woods, but I would never hold that against him.<br /><br /><b>Breast(s):</b>  Seriously?  Breasts?  They’re boobs…tits…fun bags!!  To hell with the clinical and sterile term, breast.  They can spurt out milk and are fun to play with.  Boobs and/or Tits, are much better names for such a jocular and happiness yielding creation.<br /><br />Another thing that Jayman mentioned yesterday…Sammy, addy, and pressie.  In that vein, I would like to add another…<b><i>“Bestie”.</i></b><br /><br /><i>“I want to show you all a picture of my newest bestie.”</i>  You mean your new best friend?<br /><br />How’s about I pour a gallon of fucking sorghum all over you and your "bestie's" bodies and place you both on a fire ant colony you idiot!?  Fuckin’<i>“bestie”.</i><br /><br /><b>Hitler: </b> Oh Dear God!!  I think I like Adolf Hitler more than all of these present day politicians and political pundits who invoke his name in order to elicit outrage and score a political point that is always way off base. Hitler was a nut, who had one nut, and killed millions.  Neither George W. "Deconstructivist Architecture" at 25

The show featured drawings and models for ten major projects by seven architects: Coop Himmelb(l)au, Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, and Bernard Tschumi. Three have won Pritzker Prizes since 1988, and all are well known now, but at the time they were hardly familiar names.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/8410538474/" title="Rooftop Remodeling by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="Rooftop Remodeling" height="512" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8077/8410538474_14d018c969_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br />MoMA has put some pieces from their collection that were in the 1988 exhibition back on display in a small room in the contemporary galleries on the second floor. Pieces like Coop Himmelb(l)au's model of the Rooftop Remodeling in Vienna (pictured here) are also accompanied by some pieces that were not in the show, like Eisenman's drawings for House VI. The few drawings and models on display aren't much of a 25-year celebration of what can be seen as a very influential show (not as influential as the <i>International Style</i> exhibition of 1932, but still important considering the subsequent careers of the seven architects and their influence on countless others), but MoMA did at least hold a panel discussion with Eisenman, Tschumi, Wigley, and curator Barry Bergdoll. They protect your head from severe injury. During the Big Air finals at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo., this past weekend, for instance, 23-year-old Icelandic snowboarder Halldor Helgason over-rotated on a triple back flip, landed head-first on the snow, and was briefly knocked unconscious. But like the other competitors he was wearing a helmet, and didn't fracture his skull.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">Indeed, studies have concluded that helmets reduce the risk of a serious head injury by as much as 60 percent. But a surprising number of safety experts and snowsport enthusiasts remain unconvinced that helmets reduce overall injury risk.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">Why? A <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19225972" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; ">telling 2009 survey of ski patrollers</a> from across the country found that 77 percent did not wear helmets because they worried that the headgear could reduce their peripheral vision, hearing and response times, making them slower and clumsier. In addition, many worried that if they wore helmets, less-adept skiers and snowboarders might do likewise, feel invulnerable and engage in riskier behavior on the slopes.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">In the past several years, a number of researchers have attempted to resolve these concerns, for or against helmets. Peripheral vision and response times are a serious safety concern in a sport where skiers and riders rapidly converge from multiple directions.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; ">But when researchers asked snowboarders and skiers to wear caps, helmets, goggles or various combinations of each for <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21440468" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; ">a 2011 study</a> and then had them sit before a computer screen and press a button when certain images popped up, they found that volunteers' peripheral vision and reaction times were virtually unchanged when they wore a helmet, compared with wearing a hat. Goggles slightly reduced peripheral vision and increased response times. "Helmets are safe. They don't seem to increase risk taking. I have a new friend. We spend hours together each day and she brings me nothing but pure joy. I carry her with me to the basement and listen to Pandora while I fold laundry. Then I have her next to me while I listen to podcasts and cook dinner.<br /><br />The sound it makes is just as good as any big huge stereo and girlfriend can get LOUD when you are ready to jam it out. Which, I try to do most afternoons around 3:30. The English have afternoon tea, I have an afternoon jam.
