Big What?

Fourteen? And we're <i>still</i> going to call the conference the Big Ten?<br /><br />After rumors persisted over the weekend, Maryland has voted - and approved - to leave the ACC and join the Big Ten conference in 2014. Rutgers is also talking to join the Big Ten as well.<br /><br />There was eighteen years between teams joining the Big Ten conference - Penn State in 1993 and Nebraska in 2011. Now there's only three. Is this how it's going to be? Teams jumping into the Big Ten like it's the Big East conference?<br /><br />I remember being pretty excited about the idea of Nebraska joining the Big Ten conference. My mouth was watering at the prospect of Michigan-Nebraska football games. Nebraska fit the mold of a Big Ten team: Midwestern, tough-as-nails, grass-fed beefy guys.<br /><br />When I heard about Maryland and Rutgers, I was a surprised, and not thrilled. Neither team is impressive, and the only championship of late was Maryland's basketball championship back in 2002. Neither is a team you'd think of first when it came to "elite college teams." If anything, both are very regional teams - known to other universities in the <i>East</i>. <br /><br />We'll see how this lineup turns out in the long run. But I return to my original question: after only changing the logo and adding a championship game and divisions, will the Big Ten be forced to scrap all of that because the number of teams keeps going farther and farther away from ten? Will this conference eventually be known as Big Ten-Squared? (That's a lot of schools.)

But I have no explanation  I've also got Flock Of Seagulls in my head so go figure.<br /><br />I've been in a mixing mood lately. Maybe it's the crispy gold of fall, turning into the icy silver of winter (woah, can i get a holla for that line of poetry?) but I'm way into silver and gold. Living in harmony, just like ebony and ivory. The odd songs flow, what can I say.<br /><br />I'm especially loving it in the kitchen. But what if you don't really want to reconnect?  "If the other person wants to continue talking later, but you aren't interested, sometimes you can respond as if you assume it is a general expression of interest and not a specific request," Sheley says. "You could respond with something like, 'Yes, it was nice talking to you, too. I'm sure we'll run into each other at another one of these events,' or 'Perhaps our paths will cross again soon and we can talk more about that.'"</div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><br /></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><strong>The "It's not you, it's me" approach</strong></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">The risk you run with "the open-ended closer" is that you're still leaving the door slightly open for another conversation. If you want to slam it shut, try placing the blame on your schedule or current career situation.</div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Slaughter gives these two examples of how to be direct with your rejection:</div><ul style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 15px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 5px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"><br /><li style="margin-left: 0.25in;">"I appreciate your offer to meet up for coffee. But I respect you and want to be honest: I already have a trusted partner who works in real estate to whom I send all of my referrals. I'm sure there's someone in your network who has total confidence in your professionalism and does the same for you."</li><br /><li style="margin-left: 0.25in;">"I'd love to expand my network, but I am completely booked up right now with current projects and am not taking any new meetings for the next six months. If they do reach out, this gives me the opportunity to be a bit more eloquent when it comes to my approach. With these scenarios, I would simply be polite but firm and say something along the lines of how I appreciate them reaching out, but I don't think my skill set/area of expertise, etc. would be of benefit to them."</div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><br /></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><strong>The phone call fake out</strong></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">This is likely a last-resort tactic, but if you've tried everything else and you still can't escape, you can always pull the fake phone call from a friend. "You can always recruit a confederate who knows that you are trying to escape a situation," Slaughter says. "They can call you on the phone and pull you into an 'important conversation.' Your ally can also rescue you directly: 'Mind if I borrow Fred for a minute? large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">It adds: “We should show preparedness to hold available, train, deploy and sustain in theatre the necessary civilian and military normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Meanwhile, the UK’s role in future EU defence co-operation was a big topic at the justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">He touched on historic sensitivities by describing EU spending as a kind of “Marshall
