Key West

<span style="font-size: large;">We holiday in Key West, Florida every year.  You may have heard of Key West, it is the last of a chain of islands off the coast of the USA.  The island is the most southernmost point in the States but it is actually closer to Cuba then to the mainland of America.  It is 90 miles from Cuba (by boat) and 150 miles drive from Miami - the chain of the Florida Keys are joined by bridges from island to island (or key to key).</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">For such a small island (4 miles by 2 miles) it is surprisingly historic.  Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West for awhile along with Tennessee Williams and Robert Frost.  You can visit the <a href="http://www.hemingwayhome.com/">house</a> that Hemingway lived in with his wife Pauline.  It is a really interesting tour and the polydactyl cats living on the grounds are quite a sight!</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">President Truman managed to base himself in Key West for much of his presidential term.  The <a href="http://www.trumanlittlewhitehouse.com/">house</a> that he lived in is now a museum and I thoroughly recommend a visit.  I think I have been to see it 4 times and each time I learnt something new!</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">There are lots of other sights to see in Key West including the Southernmost Point, The Key West Lighthouse, The Butterfly Conservatory along with numerous art galleries.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Nightlife in Key West is mainly based on Duval Street and also along the bight.  There are so many different different bars that there is something for just about everyone.  I went to the Green Parrot Bar with my parents to watch a Blue Grass band which was a lot of fun. Sloppy Joes where Hemingway hung out also plays a mix of music with performers coming from all over the country to play here.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">While on the island, we love to bike around checking out the sights and also getting out on the water and doing some fishing.  Nothing beats coming home and throwing your freshly caught fish on the bbq and having a cocktail while cooking dinner!</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Probably my favourite thing about Key West is the choice of restaurants.  I love the fact that there are very few chain restaurants in Key West and an amazing selection of fresh seafood restaurants, little small quaint charming restaurants and also rough and ready casual eateries.  All serving up great food and wine!  My two favourite restaurants are <a href="http://www.7fish.com/">7 Fish</a> and <a href="http://www.santiagosbodega.com/">Santiago's Bodega</a>.  We also (surprisingly!) love the <a href="http://www.keywesttravelguide.com/vegetarian-cafe-menu.html">vegetarian cafe</a> in KW - great healthy food in a very chilled out venue with very friendly staff.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">If you do ever get to Key West my recommendation on where to stay is either in one of the cute B&B's in old town or to rent a cute conchy cottage such as <a href="http://rentals.historichideaways.com/rns/search/bahama-breeze.aspx?tab=rates">Bahama Breeze</a> through <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5-bUsRLUwE">Historic Hideaways</a>.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">All in all I think Key West is a place unlike any other and I think you need to visit to see what it is like to vacation in Paradise!!!</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Here's <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dan-renzi/the-best-of-key-west_b_1887091.html">something further to read </a>about Key West.</span><br /><br /><br />

O'Stillman Cup

Paws up little monsters!

<span style="font-size: large;">Wow! Wow! Wow! </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">We went to see Lady Gaga last night. She was just amazing.  We had a (monsters) ball at the concert! It was just great - check out this <a href="http://www.independent.ie/national-news/40000-lady-gaga-fans-turn-aviva-into-kingdom-for-pop-princess-of-moment-3230138.html">review</a></span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">I still can't decide which song she did best. My family will always come first.<br />2. I will take care of myself and maintain good health.<br />3. I will go on a trip once a year with Nicki -- MINIMUM.<br />4. I will not go more than nine hours a day at the office.<br />5. I will sleep with my cell phone on silent.<br />6. I will continue to communicate daily with my kids.<br />7. I will trust God's plan and not be overanxious.<br />8. I will keep the lake house.<br />9. I will find a way to watch Nicki and Gigi play volleyball.<br />10. I will eat three meals a day.</blockquote><br /><br />Do we consider our family when we make promises? Do we make a promise to them first? Do we make a promise to take care of ourselves?<br /><br />Whether or not you agree with his ten points, it is about getting our priorities straight. In my church's film <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.courageousthemovie.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Courageous (film)">Courageous</a>, the fathers made a pledge to their families called <a href="http://www.courageousresolutioncertificate.com/resolution-men-book-alex-stephen-kendrick-courageous.html" target="_blank">the Resolution</a>.<br /><br />In today's stress and struggle, it is important to know what you believe. To know your priorities must come before you can follow your priorities. If your life seems to be in a mess and you're not getting out of it what you feel needs to be happening, it may be time to set your priorities and live it. (You could start with <a href="http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2011/05/20-questions-that-will-make-you-better.html" target="_blank">20 Questions to make you a better person</a> to help.)<br /><br />You are a product of your habits. (See "<a href="http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2011/08/routine-of-being-amazing.html" target="_blank">The routine of being amazing</a>") Habits are decided. Let your priorities set your habits and you'll be aligned with things you think are important.<br /><br />I challenge you to right now make a draft of your priorities. If you were going to sign a contract with yourself, what would it look like? With your family?<br /><br />Don't rush out and write something and scrawl your name, such things should be taken with all seriousness and intention or they are just another reason kids have to distrust their parents. We need more commitments from parents. It is hard. It would be easy not to care. It is the hardest job in the world to be a parent. We're all flawed. Our kids are too. But it is something that should be done with care, intent, and purpose. We must be courageous.<br /><br />Urban has me thinking about this and my kids as I work on book number 2 (<a href="http://writinginthecloud.wikispaces.com/" target="_blank">Collaborative Writing in the Cloud</a>) in the office today. Think about priorities. I am.<br /><br />Remember your noble calling, parent. No one can do your job but YOU. You ROCK if you care. Do you dare to level it up? Tonight's the night!!

A walk by the canal

Dublin Yoga!

<span style="font-size: large;">I've started practising Yoga again.  There is a great little studio around the corner from us.  We walked down to it last night but tonight I cycled as I was a little tight for time coming from work.  I'm still very much getting used to the different types of yoga and I really miss the heat of Bikram.  </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">I find Bikram Yoga far more physical and because of the endurance you need it actually becomes more meditative as you need to really concentrate on your body and how much you can do (or not do in my case!)  But as I said this is a nice studio so I will stick with it for awhile.  They also do Pilates so I will probably give that ago too. </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">By the way I think there has been a serious turn in the weather......winter is on it's way but for the positive my weekend has started already as I am finished work until Monday. Chilling out with a glass of wine now while we watch "The Good Wife" on boxset on UPC Demand, life is good! </span><br /><br /><br />

9+1 Ways of Being Political

<img alt="9+1-1.jpg" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/9+1-1.jpg" title="9+1 Ways of Being Political" /><br />[The 9+1 posters stitched together near the entrance to the gallery] <br /><br />Last night I visited MoMA to check out the new exhibition <a href="http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1313"><i>9+1 Ways of Being Political: 50 Years of Political Stances in Architecture and Urban Design</i></a>, curated by <a href="http://www.world-architects.com/en/pages/curating-pedro-gadanho">Pedro Gadanh</a>o with Margot Weller. MoMA's architecture shows tend to alternate between activist projects -- <i>Foreclosed</i>, <i>Rising Currents</i> -- and exhibits that utilize the museum's permanent collection to explore a theme. <i>9+1</i> is certainly the latter. As Gadanho's first show in his still relatively young post as MoMA's Curator of Contemporary Architecture, it is also an ambitious idea that benefits from the exhibit's organization, clarity, and design.<br /><br />Each one of the 9+1 ways (the +1 refers to a new acquisition, a performance piece that will take place off site at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City) is explained on a poster-sized piece of paper that can actually be taken home after being pulled off the wall. These ways, or themes, include a range of years that coincides with their influence and the pieces from the collection, but the time frames are not sequential; there is plenty of overlap among them. Below is a list of those 9+1 ways and one piece from each that was a highlight for me. But Gadanho has shaped the space very deliberately, something I noticed and sketched on my visit (below -- the dotted line is the path one takes to sequentially follow the 9+1 ways in order). While the curator said last night that the walls, model stands (heavy lines in center of plan), and space work to create Rem Koolhaas's famous <b><span class="st">¥</span><span class="st">€</span></b><span class="st"><b>$</b>, in which everything is based on money, I didn't pick up on that intention besides the Y-shaped walls. Yet there is a deliberate path that ends in a dark space where a video (<i>Burn</i>) is projected. The prescribed movement and the propaganda-like posters are two layers over the content that seem to relate to the political theme. These also, respectively, make each section more intimate and the exhibition more interactive and potentially memorable. <strong>Part-Time Children’s Programmer -</strong> <span style="color: #48286d;"><strong>Easton Public Library</strong></span> seeks a highly motivated, enthusiastic, friendly individual with strong interpersonal skills to help with library programming. Candidate must be creative, artistic, flexible and able to juggle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment. Duties include: planning and implementing age appropriate story times and craft programs for children in preschool through grade 12 as well as assisting children, young adults and parents with library use. 10-15 hours per week. Salary: $15.00 per hour (no benefits). Qualifications: Associate Degree, extensive experience working with children is required, familiarity with online research procedures and basic computer applications is preferred.
