Surely, a not-so-insignificant chunk of the service's 728 million daily active users falls between 13 and 19, right?</p><br /><p>According to Facebook CFO David Ebersman, speaking in the company's third-quarter earnings call in late October, teen activity seems to be a bit down on the social network.</p><br /><p>'Our best analysis on youth engagement in the US reveals that usage of Facebook among US teens overall was stable from Q2 to Q3, but we did see a decrease in daily users, specifically among younger teens,' Ebersman said.</p><br /><p>While the statement appeared to confirm thoughts that little ones are turning elsewhere for their social fixes – including services like Snapchat, formerly Instagram (which Facebook now owns), and Tumblr, as well as a variety of other messaging services like WeChat and WhatsApp — that's not quite the end of the tale as far as Facebook's teen activity goes.</p><br /><p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg has now jumped into the fray, and she's telling a bit of a different story. Speaking to AllThingsD's Mike Isaac, Sandberg recently commented that reaction to Ebersman's statements 'has been blown out of proportion.'</p><br /><p>'As we said on the earnings call, overall U.S. teen usage of Facebook remains stable. The vast majority of U.S. teens are on Facebook. And the majority of U.S. teens use Facebook almost every day,' Sandberg commented.</p><br /><p>She went on to address one of the general problems she perceives with Facebook, in that the service — close to celebrating its tenth birthday in February of next year — is starting to feel a bit aged in today's web culture.</p><br /><p>'That means that we're not the newest. And often, particularly in our space, newer things are shinier and cooler. And what Mark [Zuckerberg] has said and what we all believe is that we're not trying to be the coolest. And we're not trying to be the newest. We're trying to be the most useful,' Sandberg said.</p><br /><p>'I think if you look at the way teenagers continue to use Facebook, we are useful to them,' she added.</p><br /><p>She sees Facebook at the forefront of the 'sharing' space – which is to say, Facebook and all the other social services competing for users' attentions are benefitting from the growing mass of users that are sharing more parts of their lives online.</p><br /><p>'There's a lot of competition out there, but it's amid a growing market. That means there's room for us to grow and others to grow as well,' Sandberg said.</p><br /></div>

Doctor Who: How Norfolk man created Dalek and Tardis sounds

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>A broken-down Sunday school piano and the key to a mother's front door were the unlikely origins to unlocking one of the most recognisable sounds in Doctor Who history.</p><br /><p>But for Brian Hodgson, a former BBC Radiophonics Workshop sound engineer, these basic items were the starting point for creating the distinctive, unearthly, sound of a Tardis - the sometimes temperamental vehicle of the Time Lords.</p><br /><p>As Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary, Mr Hodgson, who now lives on the Norfolk Broads, remembers: 'It was quite difficult as everybody knew rockets went 'bang, whoosh' - but what does a time machine do?'</p><br /><p>'It doesn't go up, it doesn't go down, it goes everywhere at once. The thing I had in my mind was that it should be coming and going, and very vague.'</p><br /><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71282000/jpg/_71282842_54561b3b-e794-44e2-81ac-9aa66931a5a3.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Mr Hodgson, 75, joined the workshop in 1962 after working as an actor and stage manager.</p><br /><p>On how the Tardis should sound, he said: 'I don't know who thought of it, but we came up with the 'rending of the fabric of time and space'. I was in a cinema and in the interval I had a programme and I drew it - exactly how I wanted it to go together.</p><br /><p>'I'd done a programme called The Survivors where we had to have the sound of a ship scraping on the rocks, and the piano sounds I'd used for that, very slowed down, seemed a good starting point.</p><br /><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71282000/jpg/_71282837_brianhodgson2_624.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>'I got my bunch of keys out, I got my mum's front door key and scraped that up the strings. We did that several times on the bass strings on an old Sunday school piano that had been taken apart.</p><br /><p>'So we took those and speeded them up, slowed them down and cut several of them together and started to add feedback to get that echoey sort of thing.'</p><br /><p>'Great big bang'</p><br /><p>Mr Hodgson told BBC Radio Norfolk he remembers the Doctor Who team liked his sound of the Tardis. It had taken him three weeks to create, but it still wasn't quite right.</p><br /><p>'They came to listen to it and said they liked it, but there was something missing - why hadn't I put a rising note in it?</p><br /><p>'I said 'time machines don't go up, they go everywhere'. They said 'well we think it needs it'. So I put the rising note in it with loads of feedback and the Tardis was born.</p><br /><p>'Unfortunately, I'd spent so much time on the sound of it taking off, when we were asked for it to land I only had three days to sort that out. So I literally played it backwards, again with loads of feedback on it, and put a great big bang on the end of it.'</p><br /><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71282000/jpg/_71282844_pianotardis.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>As the original sound effects creator on the programme, Mr Hodgson was also responsible for designing the dictatorial modulated tones of the Daleks, whose leader Davros was played by Norfolk's Terry Molloy for three seasons of the classic series.</p><br /><p>During his 10 years working at the workshop on Doctor Who, in addition to the Tardis, Mr Hodgson also created the sounds of invading Cybermen, the Dalek control room and the Time Lord courtroom.</p><br /><p>'Dalek staccato'</p><br /><p>'I'd done a voice treatment for a rather posh robot in a radio play called Sword From The Stars,' he said.</p><br /><p>'I'd experimented with my own voice and a ring modulator and it seemed to work. So when the Dalek thing came up I thought the modulation thing will probably work as it will grate, but we needed an actor to do the voice, so we got Peter Hawkins in.</p><br /><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71169000/jpg/_71169874_71169871.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>'Peter came up with the typical Dalek staccato and I asked him to elongate all the vowels because you only hear the modulation on the vowels.</p><br /><p>'If you modulated the consonants they disappear and you can't hear it - so he did it on all the vowels and that became the Dalek voice.'</p><br /><p>After the Daleks appeared in the series in 1963, Mr Hodgson asked producer Verity Lambert if they could have one for the workshop.</p><br /><p>He remembers she said that they could have one after the show ended.</p><br /><p>'We never got it of course,' he said. 'The series had been renewed.'</p><br />The golden anniversary episode of Doctor Who - The Day of the Doctor, starring Norfolk's John Hurt as the War Doctor, is screened on Saturday 23 November at 19:50 GMT on BBC One.</div>

The normally quiet Maine town is best known for its proximity to former U.S. President George H.W. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://a57.foxnews.com/global.fncstatic.com/static/managed/img/fn2/video/876/493/112213_edge_calihealthcare_640.jpg?ve=1" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>Connecticut is the most recent state to reject President Obama's plan to 'fix' his signature health-care law after millions of Americas received policy cancellation notices -- a trend that suggests the president's proposed solution will have little impact on the issue.</p><br /><p>At least eight others states -- California, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington -- have rejected the president's Nov. 14 proposal that insurance companies offer plans that don't comply with ObamaCare requirements for at least a year. Connecticut decided Friday.</p><br /><p>Though ObamaCare is federal law, governors and insurance commissioners must allow providers to make the exceptions because insurance is regulated differently in each state.</p><br /><p>Obama in touting his sweeping health-care reform law before singing it in 2010 told Americans they could keep their existing insurance plans if they liked them.</p><br /><p>However, many of those plans do not meet the law's new standards, which has resulted in million of cancellation notices being mailed out over the past few months and the president announcing his proposed solution.</p><br /><p>'We are not going to gut this law,' Obama said during a speech in Cleveland. 'We will fix what needs to be fixed, but we're going to make the Affordable Care Act work.'</p><br /><p>This is not the first so-called fix the president has proposed, starting with him putting a one-year delay on the ObamaCare mandate that small businesses provide insurance to employees, to allow owners to sort through the complex paperwork.</p><br /><p>And White House this week extended the enrollment deadline after the disastrous rollout Oct. 1 of the healthcare.gov website.</p><br /><p>Officials said Friday they would extend the Dec. 15 deadline to Dec. 23 for insurance coverage that kicks in Jan 1. Those who fail to enroll by March 15 face a tax penalty.</p><br /><p>New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, last week rejected the offer, saying his state exchange is working well and the state-run website has not had the technical glitches like the federal site.</p><br /><p>One of the biggest concerns among state officials is that allowing residents to wait a year will make the overall ObamaCare situation worse because the young, healthy people needed to enroll and cover the cost of the elderly and other more costly customers will indeed wait.</p><br /><p>Minnesota Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and other governors reportedly said no to the Obama offer over concerns it would destabilize their states insurance markets and result in higher premiums for too many residents.</p><br /><p>On Thursday, California's health insurance exchange voted unanimously against the proposal</p><br /><p>The Covered California Board of Directors decided instead to stick with its approach of phasing out the non-compliant policies by year's end, saying Obama's request that insurers let Americans keep those plans through 2014 will not help consumers in the end.</p><br /><p>'The board cited that extending the deadline offers no benefit to the consumer and may create confusion about accessing affordable health care coverage through Covered California,' it said in a press release.</p><br /><p>However, at least a dozen states have agreed to the proposal or were already allowing insurers to let customers renew existing plans.</p><br /><p>Among them are Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon and Texas. Roughly another 20 states have yet to decide.</p><br /><p>The other major factor is whether insurance companies will comply.</p><br /><p>North Carolina Blue Cross Blue Shield and Florida Blue have agreed but Blue Cross Blue Shield Alabama did not.</p><br /><p>The Alabama group said Wednesday that temporarily reinstating out-of-compliance policies would 'destabilize' the state's insurance market and that 'the ultimate impact would be higher healthcare costs for all of our customers, now and in the near future.'</p><br /></div>

The Final No Show – was originally announced over a year ago as Jones’ star-studded farewell concert. But that changed in April, when the country legend died at the age of 81.</p> <p></p> <p>Merle Haggard Remembers George Jones</p> <p></p> <p>Though Jones was there at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena in spirit only – his rocking chair sat empty on stage, in front of his longtime backing band and last night’s house band, the Jones Boys – Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Kid Rock, Alan Jackson, Eric Church, Charlie Daniels and Jamey Johnson were among the artists on hand to sing for him.</p> <p></p> <p>“I think I was named after George,” country icon, Jones footstep-follower and current CMA Entertainer of the Year winner George Strait joked near the night’s end, before bringing the house down with a faithful rendition of the 1974 Number One “The Grand Tour” – an obvious influence on Strait’s own butter-voiced classic “The Chair.” It was just one highlight among many in a show overloaded with emotional moments.</p> <p></p> <p class="p2"></p> <div class="assetContainer imageStandard floatLt"> <div class="image-holder"><img alt="Brad Paisley performs during Playin' Possum! And one that was rivaled only by Alan Jackson’s finale performance of Jones’ signature saloon-slow-dance-staple “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” which the singer finished while holding Jones’ widow Nancy in an emotional embrace.</p> <p></p> <p>But hours earlier, almost without question, R&B legend Sam Moore turned in the show-stopper of the night when he crooned the country-soul serenade “Blues Man” – a Hank Williams Jr.-penned tuned Jones cut as a duet with Dolly Parton in 2005. Singing the down-on-both-knees-begging-for-forgiveness ballad directly to Nancy Jones, seated front row center, Moore’s quivering rasp cut through the coliseum.</p> <p></p> <p>As tough an act as Moore was to follow, rising superstar and obvious Jones disciple Eric Church inspired as big an ovation from the crowd when he passionately delivered a solo-acoustic rendition of Jones’ latter-career chestnut “Choices.”</p> <p></p> <p>Then there were the duets. Like a contest to see who could pull off the best George and Tammy impression, Strait and Martina McBride locked eyes and traded lines on “Golden Ring,” competing against current King and Queen of Country Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, who sang a spirited “These Days (I Barely Get By).” But Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood secured the prize early in the night, singing the 1971 Jones/Wynette hit duet “Take Me.”</p> <p></p> <p class="p2"></p> <div class="assetContainer imageStandard floatLt"> <div class="image-holder"><img alt="Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton performs during Playin' Possum! Like duo Big & Rich taking the stage in a countrified Rob Halford style on a pair of John Deere riding mowers – a nod to Jones’ infamous arrest for drunk driving such a vehicle to a liquor store – as they opened the show with the Possum’s campy 1965 hit “Love Bug.” In keeping with that jocular spirit of mobility, fast-fingered guitar-slinger Brad Paisley cranked out some hot licks on his cover of “The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song).”</p> <p></p> <p>“No one was more generous to me than George Jones,” the reliably affable Paisley quipped. “I know he’s looking down at this and saying, ‘Son, where’s all the money going for this?’”</p> <p></p> <p>While Kid Rock was a logical choice for a fast, loose version of “White Lightning,” how Styx’s Tommy Shaw ended up landing “She Thinks I Still Care” in a show that fittingly featured the likes of Larry Gatlin majestically crooning “A Good Year for the Roses” is anyone’s guess. Nevertheless, Shaw met the beer-hoisting, 16,000-strong crowd halfway, affecting a Southern accent and cueing the audience to sing the chorus in arena-rock fashion. </p> <p></p> <p>As expected, attendees didn’t much know what to make of strange bedfellows Jamey Johnson and Megadeth, who brought a hint of heavy metal to a cover of Jones’ Celtic-tinged 1998 lost classic “Wild Irish Rose.” Showing restraint, the band steered clear of blast beats and finger-tapped solos, and singer Dave Mustaine – confident though way out of his comfort zone – dialed back his trademark high-pitched howl, giving perhaps the most subtle vocal performance of his career, and one that was undeniably unique.</p> <p></p> <p>Surprisingly, that wasn’t the most awkward moment of the night. Before a brief intermission, actor Jon Voight, making little mention of Jones, took the stage and asked the crowd to stand, lock arms and “form a human chain of love” in support of singer Randy Travis, who was watching from a remote location while recovering from a stroke he suffered in July. “We love you, Randy,” Voight had the crowd intone en masse. </p> <p></p> <p>Later on, former Arkansas Governor and Jones chum Mike Huckabee – one of a handful of emcees hosting the show – had a rather unfortunate, albeit timely, gaff when praising the performances and musing on the event’s significance.</p> <p></p> <p>“You’re going to remember where you were November 22, 1963,” he said without skipping a beat. </p> <p></p> <p>Jaws briefly dropped by the thousands, but everybody knew what he meant, and they all agreed.</p> </div> //<!--[CDATA[ jQuery(".gmframe").load(function (){jQuery(this).remove();}); //]]--> <br><br>
