Solar Winter Begins Tomorrow

You hear us refer to winter in a couple of different classifications -- meteorological winter, which is the months of December, January, and February; and astronomical winter, which is the season that begins with the winter solstice on December 21st (most years).<br /><br />There's also a term occasionally thrown around called solar winter, which is the shortest days of the year in a three month timeframe.  For the Northern Hemisphere, that starts tomorrow. In Philadelphia, that means daylight between tomorrow and February 5th will be 10 hours, 20 minutes or shorter over the next 90ish days.  It also yields our lowest sun angles in the sky, with the sun trending between 26 and 34 degrees above the horizon at midday.  This is in contrast to our "solar summer", which occurs from May through August. During that timeframe, the sun is between 66 and almost 74 degrees above the horizon at 1 PM. You'll notice how much more direct sunlight hits you in May, June, July, and August and how much easier it is to burn in that timeframe as opposed to over the next few weeks. Via timeanddate.com</td></tr></tbody></table><br />The sun's most direct light beams down across the Southern Hemisphere between late September and late March.  For us, lower sun angle means easier chances for cold to build up since the sun can't provide as much solar heating nor provide it for as long a period of time as it does across the Southern Hemisphere over the next several months.<br /><br />With sunsets now before 5 PM until mid January thanks to the end of daylight saving time, the feeling of very short days and long nights will take hold over the region whether you like it or not. Of course, with the end of daylight saving time the occasional voice in the wilderness calling for <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/11/daylight-saving-time-is-terrible-heres-a-simple-plan-to-fix-it/281075/" target="_blank">time zone reform and/or the end of DST in the United States</a> comes out of the woodwork.

Power lines were across the road and traffic was rerouted. Word from those living in the area was that Rt. 11, an alternate to I-81, was a parking lot.  At 5:00, VDOT said the interstate would be closed another 3-4 hours.<br /><br />With always-heavy I-81 traffic on top of local commuter traffic at the end of the work day, it's a mess in Harrisonburg. Avoid the area if at all possible. Travelers who had planned to make it further along the interstate may end up staying over at Harrisonburg hotels. Seaman</p>  <p>NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Driven by an aging population and increased access to health insurance, the U.S. will need more doctors by 2025, says a new study.</p>  <p>The expected rise in demand varies by state and medical specialty, according to the study’s lead author.</p>  <p>“What’s happening at the state level can be very different than what’s happening at the national level,” Timothy Dall told Reuters Health. He is a managing director at the research and information service firm IHS in Washington, D.C.</p>  <p>The new study, published in Health Affairs, looks at future demands for primary and specialized healthcare providers. Those specialists include cardiologists, neurologists and urologists.</p>  <p>The researchers used a computer model to estimate future healthcare demand by taking into account a growing and aging population and increased access to health insurance due to the Affordable Care Act – commonly known as Obamacare.</p>  <p>The U.S. Census Bureau projects the country’s population will increase by 9.5 percent between 2013 and 2025. The Congressional Budget Office also estimates that an additional 28 million people will have health insurance by 2023.</p>  <p>The researchers found the expected increase in doctor demand was largely attributed to a growing number of diseases among an older population. Obamacare, on the other hand, was only linked to an increase of a few percentage points.</p>  <p>Overall, the researchers found the demand for primary care or family doctors will grow by 14 percent by 2025. That’s less than the expected growth among some medical specialties.</p>  <p>Dall and his colleagues estimate that demand for vascular surgeons – who perform bypass surgeries and insert stents, for instance – will increase by about 31 percent and demand for cardiologists will increase by 20 percent.</p>  <p>But those estimates vary by state.</p>  <p>For example, though the demand for cardiologists is estimated to grow by 51 percent in Nevada, demand in West Virginia is only estimated to grow by 5 percent.</p>  <p>Dall cautioned that the estimates are subject to change based on healthcare delivery systems and behaviors.</p>  <p>For example, Dr. Reid Blackwelder, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, said conditions that would drive people to see specialists are largely preventable with adequate primary care. Focusing on prevention and primary care would be expected to shift demand toward family doctors.</p>  <p>“As we start to recognize the foundational nature of true primary care and prevention, we’re going to need more primary care providers to be that foundation,” Blackwelder told Reuters Health.</p>  <p>Blackwelder, who was not involved with the new study, is also affiliated with East Tennessee State University’s James H. How tech companies abuse visas to hire cheap foreign labor, offshore jobs

The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-1B_visa" rel="nofollow">H-1B</a> visa program lets high-tech companies like Microsoft bring foreign workers to America and pay them less than they'd pay qualified U.S. citizens.<br /><br />Defenders of the program say it recruits the best and brightest from overseas, allowing U.S. firms to develop innovative technology.<br /><br />That's baloney.<br /><br />Foreign students in computer science now working in the U.S. are on average less talented than Americans, according to a study released in February by<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> </span>the <a href="http://epi.org/" rel="nofollow">Economic Policy Insttitute</a>. But they are cheaper.<br /><br />The EPI study concluded:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">...employers prefer to hire foreign workers over similarly qualified U.S. workers, because legal loopholes in how the “prevailing wage” is calculated let them save on labor costs. The H-1B visa also ties workers to their employer, effectively rendering them captive for the duration of their visa. </blockquote>What's worse, U.S. employers don't even have to try to hire qualified Americans for high-tech jobs before hiring someone from overseas. <br /><br />And there's something even more sinister at work:  the H-1B worker learns the job and then rotates back to the home country and takes the work with him, <a href="http://www.epi.org/blog/top-10-h1b-guestworker-offshore-outsourcing/" rel="nofollow">another EPI report</a> found. The top 10 companies using H-1B visas ALL have major operations overseas.<br /><br />Last week, Indian technology company Infosys paid a $34 million settlement to the U.S. Department of Justice for alleged H-1B visa fraud, according to <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Business/top-10-companies-request-visas-foreign-workers/story?id=20730536#" rel="nofollow">ABC News</a>. The truth about poverty: Most Americans are poor at some time

Poverty is most of us.<br /><br />That's the conclusion of Mark R. Rank, a professor at Washington University who studies poor people in America. His research shows that 54 percent of Americans fall into poverty -- or close to it -- for at least a year. People are poor because they lose their jobs, their hours are cut, their family splits up or they have a major health problem. <br /><br />For most of us, the question is not <i>whether</i> we will experience poverty, but <i>when</i>, writes Rank in the<a href="http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/11/02/poverty-in-america-is-mainstream/?src=me&ref=general" rel="nofollow"> New York Times</a>.<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">The typical pattern is for an individual to experience poverty for a year or two, get above the poverty line for an extended period of time, and then perhaps encounter another spell at some later point. </blockquote>With so many people falling in and out of poverty, you might conclude America is not a rich country. That's true for the majority of us. <br /><br />Bruce Krastin looked at recent Social Security Administration data and found 47 percent of all workers earn poverty income, while the top one percent takes home 14 percent of all income in America. Krastin, writing in<a href="http://www.zerohedge.com/contributed/2013-11-04/americas-income-who-has-it" rel="nofollow"> zero hedge</a>, concludes<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Something is clearly wrong when 47% of workers earn a poverty level income. Similarly, there is something wrong when 1% of workers earn 14% of all income...My conclusion is that America is not the ‘rich’ country that people think it is.</blockquote>Since there are currently<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/09/unemployed-job-opening_n_3568646.html" rel="nofollow"> three workers for every job opening</a>, you sure can't blame poor people for being lazy or not having enough education. In fact, Rank found a vast majority of the poor have worked extensively and will do so again.<br /><br />He also found:<br /><ul><li>The U.S. poverty rate is twice the European average because we do not provide universal health care, affordable child care, or reasonably priced low-income housing;</li><li>Two-thirds of those below the poverty line identified themselves as white;</li><li>Only about 10 percent of those in poverty live in extremely poor urban neighborhoods.</li></ul>So next time you hear people complaining about lazy freeloaders who need to get an education so they don't need handouts, throw a few of these facts at them. <br /><br />

But the truth is, they are being had.</p>  <p>A group of Canadian researchers recently conducted DNA barcoding tests on 44 bottles of popular supplements from 12 anonymous companies. They found that many bottles contained very diluted versions of the advertised herb, or were replaced entirely by cheap fillers.</p>  <p>Even more disturbing is that one-third of the bottles tested had <em>none</em><em> </em>of the herb they advertised. These bottles contained fillers like soybean, wheat, and rice, which were not listed on the label. This inaccuracy creates a potentially dangerous situation for unwitting customers who have gluten allergies. </p>  <p>Who would've thought that there are people taking advantage of a health craze that has very little, if any, medical backing? Companies can slap an herbal supplement label on anything, since the Food and Drug Administration does not conduct testing. (The industry is expected to operate on the honor code.)</p>  <p>Luckily, concerned scientists have taken up the cause to expose herbal supplements, and the perpetual fraud these companies pull on customers. Dr. David A. Baker, who performed a similar study last year with black cohosh supplements, said, "If you had a child who was sick and three out of 10 penicillin pills were fake, everybody would be up in arms. But it's O.K. to buy a supplement where three out of 10 pills are fake. I don't understand it. That was the word carried by dozens of people who had decided to walk  out of LAX in search of rental cars and whiskey, whose number I will be  joining shortly. (One report has the shooter, in custody, as "a white  man in a white shirt." Investigation is ongoing.) </b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Terminal 7 is  gradually coming to life again; flights here will be delayed, but we are  not a crime scene, so things likely will get back to normal by  nightfall. There are bomb squads with dogs wandering about. The  ticketing area is abuzz with low cellphone conversations reassuring  loved ones that everything's okay, and that folks are likely going to be  a little late going home.</b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Every now and again, a person in a TSA  uniform will wander by. They have the 1000-yard stare going. The shock  waves are weaker, but you can still feel them moving through the place.</b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>A  cop just ran by. Everybody turned and stared.</b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b></b></span></span><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>There already is some talk about this event being a  "random" one. But it is not. These things are becoming as regular as  rain, as predictable as the summer heat.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>The only thing "random" about  it is the shooter. He could be anyone, and that's the point. There are  people who spend money making sure that he could be anyone, and there's  nothing "random" about how they do that.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>There is nothing "random" about  this country's ludicrous disinclination to regulate its firearms. There  is nothing "random" about the millions of dollars that the NRA spends  to convince people that they should have the right to carry their  assault weapon anywhere they want to carry it, including into an airport  terminal, if they so desire. There is nothing "random" about the  politicians who truckle and bow to this lucrative monetization of bloody  mayhem.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>These are all deliberate acts with predictable consequences.  There is nothing "random" about how we have armed ourselves, and there  is nothing "random" about the filigree of high-flown rhetoric with which  we justify arming ourselves, and there is nothing "random" about how we  learn nothing every time someone who could be anyone decides to  exercise his Second Amendment rights by opening fire. There is nothing  random about how we got where we are today, here in Terminal 7, where  people have sought refuge from the bloodshed, four terminals over. There  is nothing "random" at all.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>We have chosen insanity over reason. We  have done it with our eyes open. It is time for me to walk out of the  airport now.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>I am leaving behind a terrible event. But I am not leaving  behind something accidental. I am leaving behind what America has  determined must happen from time to time, if we are to be a free people.  I am leaving behind what America has determined is part of the cost of  being an American.
