Jerusalem, My Happy Home: Part 3

<div class="MsoNormal">My reason for coming to Jerusalem is connected to how Jerusalem got to be here in the first place. So before asking “why am I here?” I need to ask “why is Jerusalem here?”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">The first written reference to Jerusalem is in an execrations (cursings) document of Egypt from about 1800 BCE. Think of that dreadful web site of Westboro Baptist Church, which lists all the people and places God supposedly hates. The execrations list is an Egyptian version of that, invoking the wrath of their deities on despicable people and places. Jerusalem and two of the city princes made Egypt’s hit list. Skeptics deny Jerusalem existed before then, but it usually takes people awhile to get to know me before they start cussin’ me. So I suspect Jerusalem is older. We haven’t found older archaeological evidence, but small simple places don’t leave a lot of evidence and what they left we may just not have found yet.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">The oldest Biblical reference to Jerusalem is perhaps in Genesis 14. Abraham, in a Bronze Age style commando raid, rescued his nephew Lot from some marauders who were also crossways with the royalty around where Abraham lived. The local royalty were grateful to see their enemy bested.  One of the grateful local kings was also a priest – see being bi-vocational is not new. This priest-king blessed Abraham. That king was Melchizedek, the “King of Salem” – as in Jeru-salem. Melchizedek was the priest of an Amorite God named El Eljon.  It’s kind of an odd story -- Abraham a Yahweh-worshiper getting an El Eljon blessing. But it was an interfaith moment. Melchizedek was a Bronze Age inter-faith minister. In the New Testament, the Book of Hebrews calls him the spiritual ancestor of Jesus, who like Melchizedek was a priest connecting all of humanity regardless of religious affiliation, to the Divine. Today Melchizedek’s city is the Holy City of three world religions. It’s fitting. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">Of course all of this is too far back to be tested historically. As for whether Jerusalem is where Melchizedek blessed Abraham, that’s possible but not proven. Eusebius writing in the 5th Century said “yes.” Josephus writing in the late 1st Century put Salem a few miles away. Who knows? But we can say this with certainty. Egypt was talking smack about Jerusalem in 1800 BCE. The troubles have been around awhile. It is commonly said that conflict in Jerusalem is caused by the intolerance of Jews, Christians, and Muslims for each other. But the hostilities and violence here go back before Judaism, Christianity, or Islam had been born. That isn’t to say religion isn’t intimately involved in prejudice and aggression. Our hands are far from clean. But it is to say; a simplistic blaming of religion won’t do to explain a human habit of hostility that has been around a long, long time.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">There is a second story associated with the founding of Jerusalem. Rabbinic tradition has put 2 Chronicles 3, which says Solomon’s Temple was built over a threshing floor in Mt. Moriah, together with the Genesis 22 story of the sacrifice of Isaac on Mt. Moriah. Conclusion: Jerusalem was made holy in Abraham’s day as the site where Abraham was willing to kill his son, but God provided the ram for the sacrifice. That’s why David made this the capital and Solomon built the Temple here. Again, this isn’t certain. It isn’t clear that the word “Moriah” in Genesis and the word “Moriah” in Chronicles are the same word. But it seems highly plausible that Solomon’s Temple was built on a place of sacrifice for pre-Jewish religions. James Carroll sees Jerusalem as a place where religion and violence (as in human sacrifice) have been mixed from the beginning.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">Our class began today. This afternoon we drove around the hills constituting the outskirts of Jerusalem. It was a full circle of looking down from hilltops across the valleys to the hill on which the ancient city is built. It was quite a view! I got what one comes here for – a sense of how the world looked to Jesus. It was profound to look down into the Kidron Valley from the Mount of Olives knowing that after the Last Supper, Jesus and his disciples sang a hymn, then walked across the Kidron Valley here to Gethsemane. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">I will adjust but I was thrown off by a disconnect between the readings that had been recommended and the kind of presentation we had today. In pointing out significant locations, the teacher would say, “this happened here” and “that happened there.” But we don’t actually know the story with that kind of certainty. It made the Western skeptic in me cringe a bit. Tell me a place has been associated in tradition with part of the sacred story, and I will relate to that place as if the story had happened there. But tell me, as a fact that something has happened in a particular place and my lawyer’s mind begins taking measurements and saying, “Uh, I don’t think so.” <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">This visit to Jerusalem is an encounter with complexity. There is blood in Salem, the City of Peace. There was blood here before the city was founded. But there is also peace in the very midst of bloodshed. Jesus healed, forgave, and reconciled – not at Mt. Shasta, not at Esalen, not in Rhinebeck, New York or any blissy place of enlightened smiles – but here. There is truth and wisdom here, mixed with a naiveté, even gullibility that reduces religion to concrete literalism. Yet, that naiveté has a humility about it that is somehow more congenial than the cynicism I have encountered in academic settings or among religious intellectuals who are inordinately proud of what they don’t believe. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">This is a mixed place. Being here is a mixed experience. But then so is the church. So is life. Augustine famously said, “If you understand it, it isn’t God.” If this place were comprehensible, it wouldn’t be Jerusalem.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">To lighten the day’s reflections, let me tell you about a mischievous moment I got to observe. While we were surveying Jerusalem from a scenic overlook outside the city, I looked down and saw there was lower level of park beneath us. The part of the park we could see was secluded and three young Muslim women were there. They were the sort of hip Muslims wearing hijabs and jeans. They were assembling a couple of hookahs and getting ready to smoke. It was the Middle Eastern version of boys behind the barn rolling their own. Sometimes the complexity and incongruity of Jerusalem is playful and funny – but not often enough.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div>

28 in 28 #28: Architecture Concepts: Red Is Not a Color

February is Book Month on A Daily Dose of Architecture. The "<a href="http://archidose.blogspot.com/search/label/28%20in%2028">28 in 28</a>" series features a different book every day of the month. <a href="http://www.assouline.com/9782759404674.html">Architecture Concepts: Red Is Not a Color</a> by Bernard Tschumi Rizzoli, 2012 Hardcover, 776 pages <img alt="28-28_tschumi.jpg" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/28-28_tschumi.jpg" title="Book cover" /> On page 741 of this hefty 7-pound tome spanning five decades of <a href="http://www.tschumi.com/">Bernard Tschumi</a>'s architecture and writing comes a new essay, "Architecture Concepts." In it the architect writes, "Concepts are what allow us to apprehend reality," and, "Inventing a new concept always starts by determining the right architectural question." Those familiar with Tschumi's theoretical work will not be surprised by his starting point; a 1990 book with some of his writings is even called <a href="http://www.tschumi.com/publications/27/">Questions of Space</a> (Architectural Association). But readers who have journeyed through the first 740 pages of the book will have grasped it as well, given that Tschumi begins each project's presentation with one or more questions—<a href="http://www.tschumi.com/projects/14/">Le Fresnoy</a>, for example: "Can one achieve architecture without resorting to design? What if, instead of designing a new building, you keep one slated for demolition? Hod do you insert an original program inside the old and new structures simultaneously? How do you reconcile coherence with multiplicity?" The word "you" stands out in these questions. As I wrote about it in my <a href="http://www.designersandbooks.com/designer/booklist/john-hill/notable-books-2012">Notable Books of 2012</a> list at Designers & Books, "Curiously [Tschumi] writes in the second person, a tactic that is intended, among other things, to 'draw the reader in,' and which ultimately is successful due to the text’s conversational tone and its thoughtful integration with numerous illustrations." This happens throughout the book but most notably in the "photoessays" that preface the five parts: A-Space Event Program; B-Program: Juxtaposition/Superimposition; C-Vectors & Envelopes; D-Concept/Context/Content; E-Concept-Form. The illustrations in these sections fall well outside of Tschumi's architecture, such as a photo of a gymnasium being used for voting in Part B, where Le Fresnoy is located. This photo reveals how the illustrations are part inspiration, part polemic, and they strengthen his arguments; the gymnasium, for example, makes it clear that programmatic juxtapositions are becoming the norm, not the exception. The book's five parts are thematic but they are also chronological (with a few exceptions), illustrating shifts in concerns over the years, if gradual rather than dramatic ones. And this does not mean, for example, that "space event program" has been set aside in the current emphasis on "concept-form." Rather, the conceptual approaches have expanded as commissions have done the same. But with more and more projects since his breakthrough 1982 competition win for <a href="http://archidose.org/wp/1999/02/01/parc-de-la-villette/">Parc de la Villette</a>, there is a sharp decrease in the essays from Part A and Part B to the rest of the book. This is no surprise, as Tschumi, like other academic-architects, wrote a lot in the 1970s and early 1980s when work was slim. That theorizing laid a groundwork for conceptualizing about projects that would later make the move successfully from idea to reality. This large book encapsulates the evolution of Tschumi's five-decade-long (and counting) career, making his thinking and architecture more accessible and understandable to a larger audience. I think the time has come: the church has to make up its own mind, it is not for me to tell it, but I think an awful lot of people are thinking it is time they ought to be much more open to modern thinking over issues like these, and also their obsession with contraception is so damaging in the third world to women, to women’s health, to overpopulation. Did that greeting sound, or read, like I forced it? Well it should. Poor ol’ Matty Boy is under the weather emotionally…Literally.  I have had enough of winter…especially this winter. This winter drags on and on without significant snowfall or arctic temps.  It continues to be merely a quasi-cold, dreary, and gray winter, and yet clings to and tortures my soul and good nature like grim death. And?  It somewhat mirrors where my life is right now, especially as to where my lack of sex life is concerned. Listen…My BFF/OSP, and compadre Schmoop got very sick back in October.  And while her illness is no longer life-threatening, she had major surgery and still has an obnoxious tube jutting from her stomach. It’s been five months and will be at least six months when all is said and done before I can once again touch her in the biblical sense. And that’s predicated on the fact she’ll once again allow me to “touch her!!”  Which?  Always remains in question once she is free from her bile duct tube bondage. Anyhoo… With the lovely Schmoop sexually incapacitated over lo these many winter months, I have had to seek an alternative method of sexual fulfillment, namely, masturbation.  And you know what? It’s just not doing it for me anymore.  It’s kinda like how I feel about winter itself. I LOVE summer, but I still in my advanced years, get excited about the first snowfall.  It’s all pure, clean, and pretty, and then…after a few, long, turgid months of the alabaster shit, I am ready for the grass to once again grow green. It’s been the same way about masturbating these past few months with Schmoop on injured reserve.  Sure the first few times were pretty cool, because I was envisioning dorking Tyra Banks, Kate Upton, and Jon Meachem, but lately? As the winter grows long, so do the cramps in my hand and the callouses upon my penis, and my thoughts have turned to cheap and tawdry masturbation. Due to the dreariness of this Ohio winter, in the morning when I awake and see yet another gray and melancholy sky…I touch myself and think of dirty, unwashed chicks like, Kristen Stewart and Amy Winehouse. A while ago, as I was roaming the blogosphere, I happened upon a post by Peter Bogdanovich on his Indiewire blog (appropriately called Blogdanovich) titled "The Greatest Year?"  I read on, having always respected what Mr. B has to say about films and filmmaking. He not only possesses an encyclopedic knowledge and intimate understanding of the subject, but has also made some classics of his own that I much admire - The Last Picture Show (1971), What's Up, Doc? (1972) and Paper Moon (1973). With "The Greatest Year?" Bogdanovich looked back on one of his 1972 columns for Esquire magazine. In that article he'd selected and reviewed a great movie year of the past to illustrate his contention that films of the early '70s weren't measuring up. He zeroed in on 1939 in particular because in addition to the fact that it had been a banner year for movies, it was also the year he was born (as were Francis Coppola and William Friedkin, two other major filmmakers of the time). Not long after Bogdanovich's column appeared in Esquire, he recalled, a lengthier, more elaborate piece on the films of 1939 appeared in Life magazine written by film critic Richard Schickel. Schickel once and for all declared '39 to be the great year. The rest, as we know, is history. <div style="text-align: left;"> <a name='more'></a> </div><div style="text-align: left;">Peter Bogdanovich admitted in his Blogdanovich post that he actually believes "the absolute high point" of American film (he prefers the term 'cinema') encompasses 1939, 1940 and 1941. He has a point. 1940, too, was notable for a raft of classics. Here is one man's tribute, via his YouTube channel, to some of the year's best films:</div><div style="text-align: left;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;"> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/FDf0IMaLgVk" width="420"></iframe> </div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div> Other of 1940's offerings include Abe Lincoln in Illinois, The Letter, The Mortal Storm, Pride and Prejudice and The Westerner, to name a few. 1941 was no less stellar, bringing Ball of Fire, (ahem) Citizen Kane, The Devil and Daniel Webster, High Sierra, How Green Was My Valley, The Lady Eve, The Little Foxes, The Maltese Falcon, Meet John Doe, Sergeant York, Sullivan's Travels, Suspicion and more. Perhaps I'm less a purist or maybe just more democratic, but I'd extend Hollywood's high point back in time to 1937. That year introduced The Awful Truth (still my favorite screwball), Captains Courageous, Dead End, Lost Horizon and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I'd also add, on the other end, 1942, the moment just before World War II's impact was fully felt in Hollywood. 1942, after all, was the year of Casablanca, The Magnificent Ambersons, Now, Voyager, The Palm Beach Story, This Gun for Hire, To Be or Not to Be, Woman of the Year and Yankee Doodle Dandy. 1937 - 1942 were all vintage years in Hollywood. Sleuth, starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director. With this final effort, Mankiewicz became one of few filmmakers who enjoyed success in both the old Hollywood and the new. February is Book Month on A Daily Dose of Architecture. The "<a href="http://archidose.blogspot.com/search/label/28%20in%2028">28 in 28</a>" series features a different book every day of the month. <a href="http://aplust.net/tienda.php?seccion=revistas&serie=Serie%20RECLAIM&revista=RECLAIM%20Remediate%20Reuse%20Recycle">a+t 39-40: Reclaim Remediate Reuse Recycle</a> edited by Aurora Fernandez Per and Javier Mozas a+t, 2012 Paperback, 312 pages <img alt="28-28_at39-40.jpg" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/28-28_at39-40.jpg" title="Book cover" /> One of the most distinctive things about a+t magazine is the way it presents recent architecture in themed series. Most recent was the <a href="http://aplust.net/tienda/revistas/Serie%20STRATEGY/">Strategy series</a>; before it <a href="http://www.archidose.org/books/hybrids3.html">Hybrids</a>, <a href="http://archidose.blogspot.com/2008/07/book-review-civilities-i-and-ii.html">Civilities</a>, and so forth. These topics (focusing on landscapes, large buildings, and public buildings, respectively) respond to trends in the world of architecture while also taking critical positions toward them. Choosing to look at buildings that hybridize housing, offices, recreation, and other uses, for example, is a way to present projects like Steven Holl's <a href="http://www.world-architects.com/en/projects/project-review-detail/40177_sliced_porosity_block_in_chengdu">Sliced Porosity Block</a>, but the act also takes a position on how the city should evolve—taking into account a mix of uses, demographics, and other features that respond to the growing diversity of urban and suburban areas around the world. The publisher's newest series is <a href="http://aplust.net/tienda/revistas/Serie%20RECLAIM/">Reclaim</a>, which starts with a double issue subtitled "Remediate, Reuse, Recycle." The editors promote the series in an "environmental sense to reclaim the territory, the objects, the infrastructures and the materials [and] a call to reclaim dignity and citizen rights. It is a wake-up call to morally reclaim society using the Re- processes as atonement." In his introduction, Javier Mozas describes how the three subsets of Reclaim (remediate, reuse, recycle) into which the 82 projects are situated contain all of the other re-processes—rebuild, remake, reinvent, restore, etc. Of course, to reclaim, remediate, reuse, and recycle is to maintain and transform an existing building or landscape, therefore using less energy for demolition and construction of an alternatively new entity. In this sense Reclaim is an extension of Strategy—but one that works on smaller scales (Strategy dealt with landscape urbanism and other means of designing landscapes in cities)—and an increasing focus on sustainability as a path for continuity of the species. The order of the double issue's chapters—Remediate, Reuse, Recycle—means that the projects move from the large to the small, from the landscape to the building to the material. Therefore the chapters are not about figuring out what project goes where (a common tactic in many collections of contemporary architecture) or about typology (landscapes, for example, can also be found in the Recycle chapter), but about what it means to take part in the "re-" strategies. Like other a+t titles, the design, layout, and quality of presentation is exceptional, though with the new series a new design is in place. Nevertheless the editors' penchant for organizing and cross-referencing is still present. In particular, each project is tagged with page numbers to two chapters at the end the book; one describes the "agents" involved and how they worked together in either top-down or bottom-up scenarios, and the other shows their before-and-after conditions. These concluding chapters ground the 82 projects in action and time, aiding in the discovery of what lessons can be learned beyond the pretty pictures and drawings.
