Losing my way

I'm taking a month off from blogging. I read back through several of my recent posts (and deleted several). I was dismayed that everything was focused on work. My job has been consuming me for the last five weeks. It's all I talk or think about anymore.<br /><br />I considered completely deleting my blog since no one really reads it anymore anyway, and I certainly understand why they don't. It's suppose to be a "weight loss" blog, not a "my job sucks" blog. My goal is to refocus on what's important, and take some time to think.<br /><br />Someone recently commented they thought my priorities were mixed up because I had listed my job as number one, health number two, and my marriage number three. They said my marriage should be number one. Thank you Jack.<br /><br />I've been thinking about this for the past two weeks and I agree my marriage should be number one in my life, or at least near the top. Without my husband I would be lost. Without my health, I'd probably be dead, and without my job...oh well, I can always find another job. :)<br /><br />I found out today my sister completely lost her hearing in one ear. I love my sister to pieces and usually have two-hour phone conversations at least once a month (she lives in Alaska).<br /><br />Until today I hadn't talk to her since I visited in July. She lost her hearing while I was there but we thought it was because she'd been swimming in cold water. After seeing a specialist and having an MRI she was told her hearing is completely gone in her right ear. She knew two months ago. She called once but I was on the road and never called her back.<br /><br />How could I have not know this? How could I ignore my family and my husband and make my job my focus? How could have been such a idiot about life and what's really important?<br /><br />This is my new priority list:<br /><br />1. God, my faith<br />2. Marriage<br />3. Health<br />4. Friends and family<br />5. Job<br /><br />Somehow I seem to have been lost lately. Living in a daze of airports, hotels, airplanes, and stress. I want to get my head back on straight. Live the life I want, not the one I feel forced into.<br /><br />The reason for a month off from blogging is I really want to focus on what's important. I won't be reading many blogs for the next month, unless I'm in an airport or hotel with down time.<br /><br />I'll be back December 1 and hopefully in a better place in my life.<br /><br />Diana<br />169.6 <---not where I want to be...in more ways than one.

Convention 09 Retrospective

I may be too worn out from convention -- the logistics !!! -- to give a coherent reflection on it, but by the time I'm rested up it will be old news, so here goes:<br /><br />We had a more relational convention this year -- less focus on transacting business; more emphasis on developing relationships among people who did not know each other. We did that through a lot of story telling, worship, and Bible study. We spent less time with the whole gathered assembly listening to individuals give reports (talking at) and more time for small groups with common interests to network with each other (talking with).<br /><br />We also formed new relationships with a place. A lot of folks who had not experienced Camp Galilee before set foot on the land, saw the lake and the mountains, and were of course instantly converted. The reception at Galilee and the Galilee tour connected many of us to this magical place which is both the historic heart of the diocese and the key to our future.<br /><br />How do we assess that kind of convention? All I know is that it looked to me as if people were having lively conversation. It looked as if people spoke from the hearts while others listened caringly. I hope we came away as better friends.<br /><br />On the downside, we invited a lot of non-delegates to attend this year. I regret that we failed to prepare for them properly. We ran out of worship books. Guests were not always welcomed in the way I would have hoped. That is a failure of foresight on my part. I apologize and will try to make convention more welcoming next year.<br /><br />There were three major items on the business agenda: First, we formed a companion diocese relationship with the Diocese of Santiago in the Philippines. This is not a charitable mission. The Diocese of Santiago is indpendent and strong. Our companion diocese bond is a friendship and a partnership so that we can work together, learn from each other, and be in closer communion across the ocean and cultural divides.<br /><br />Second, we funded a program of Ministry Development led by a Canon for Adult Formation. I believe this will strengthen all our parishes, large and small, urban and rural.<br /><br />Finally, we funded a Hispanic Ministries inititiave. The centerpiece of this initiative is to hire a Hispanic Missioner but there is more to it than that. We hope to have several more strong Hispanic worshiping communities by this time next year and that those communities will be the cutting edge of some of our most important social ministries.

The Vatican Invitation To Disaffected Anglicans

I am just emerging from Diocesan Convention, so this is my first chance to respond to those who have wanted to hear my thoughts on the Vatican Statement inviting disffected Anglican congregations to become Roman Catholics, but the priests can still be married and they can use Anglican liturgies.<br /><br />I really think it's perfectly fine. Some disaffected Anglicans are focused on issues where they will line up better with the RC Church -- particularly those who are opposed to the ordination of women. They will have to come to terms with some of the hot button issues in the RC Church, but if they can do that, their unity with a larger group of Christians will sustain their faith, help them be financially viable, and generally promote the gospel mission. We wish them well. We wish the Roman Catholic Church well. It is a good thing.<br /><br />Other disaffected Anglicans are of a more evangelical persuasion and may not find the RC Church to be a good home. That will be for them to discern and not for us to judge.<br /><br />Meanwhile, we will continue to seek reconciliation and greater unity with all our fellow Christians.

And maybe it is for some people, but not everyone is willing to stand at a busy intersection wearing a sandwich-board sign that says, "Hire me!"<br /><br />Where does that leave you, a job seeker who needs some way to make your résumé look more attractive than the 50 other ones in the stack?<br /><br />Fear not: The rules of job seeking are in constant flux, and employers are looking for an impressive candidate, even if his or her credentials are unorthodox. The following are some examples of what other job seekers are doing to get an edge over other applicants.<br /><br />1. Start a blog<br />Doesn't it seem as if everyone and their mother has a blog these days? Except you, that is.<br /><br />Find a subject you're knowledgeable about and start writing. Compose articles that illustrate your command of the topic and that can serve as resources for someone. Over time you'll accumulate an impressive collection of work, says Lauren Milligan of ResuMAYDAY, a company that helps job seekers craft résumés.<br /><br />"It doesn't really matter what type of job you are seeking; there is always an angle that will interest people," Milligan says. "If you are a financial manager, write about how a family's investment strategy should change during a recession, or how to research an investment opportunity to avoid the next Bernie Madoff. If you are an administrative professional, write about time-management strategies or online tools that help you through your day."<br /><br />She stresses that you don't have to be looking for a writing job to get an employer's attention.<br /><br />"Doing this will let potential employers know that you are engaged at an expert level and will gain insights into you as an employee that won't be available to other candidates," Milligan says. "It will also let employers know that you are comfortable with online tools. In other words, this is a great way to gain a competitive edge."<br /><br />2. Facebook / LinkedIn / BrightFuse<br />Even though social networking isn't the technology fledgling it once was, it's still new on the scene in terms of job seeking. We hear about people who get caught lying on their Facebook profiles, but people are getting hired via networking sites, too. You can use your education and work history fields to create a new form of résumé. Search your friends list for valuable contacts or join professional networks that can help you find a job or at least get the word out that you're looking.<br /><br />"Technology doesn't replace the networking step of the job search, but it can certainly make it easier and faster," says Lynne Sarikas, director of the MBA Career at Northeastern University's College of Business Administration. "Social networking sites can help you identify appropriate contacts for networking."<br /><br />3. Twitter<br />On Twitter, which is a different kind of networking site, you can leverage contacts in the same way, only you can Tweet about your job hunt and people can stumble upon your profile more easily.<br /><br />Your profile or Tweets can link to your personal site, whether it's an online portfolio or blog. Not only will you make new contacts, but you'll also have a larger audience viewing the hard work you put into your site, which can impress a potential employer.<br /><br />4. Virtual career fairs<br />If you dislike the idea of taking your suit to the cleaners and finding a sitter for the kids just to head out to a job fair, then stay at home and go online.<br /><br />"[Virtual career fairs are part of] a growing trend among employers looking for a new, cost-effective way to recruit high-quality talent as well as tech-savvy job seekers," says Jennefer Traeger, who works with Unisfair, a virtual job-fair provider. Your pessimism can be a turnoff. Even if it's a temporary attitude brought on by rejection, the hiring manager might think it's your overall attitude. After all, you made it to the interview didn't you?<br /><br />Don't apologize for being out of work.<br />A layoff can happen to anyone. What do you do if it happens to you? Don't be ashamed -- in today's climate, layoffs occur (unfortunately) daily. Many job seekers are in your shoes. Don't apologize. Instead, focus on the job you are interviewing for by showcasing your skills and exhibiting how you are the best fit.<br /><br />Target your job search.<br />While you don't need to possess every single skill listed on a posting, you should at least be qualified for the position and prove that you have transferable skills. Your targeted résumé will help prove you're a serious candidate and have the right qualifications for the position. If you're spending time applying for jobs you're not qualified for, you're wasting valuable time you could be devoting to a position that's a better fit. If you recognize where your strengths lie and what transferable skills you possess, you'll see better results than if you apply to any posting you come across.<br /><br />Get primed.<br />"Tell me what you know about the company" or "Why would you fit in well here?" have become staple interview questions, so don't be caught off guard. Shrugging your shoulders and saying, "I don't know" isn't going to score you points. Look at the company's Web site and read press releases and newspaper articles to see what's going on with your prospective future boss. In addition to prepare for the interview, you'll learn whether the company and its culture are a right fit for you.<br /><br />They don't want to hear what you think they want to hear<br />Interviewers have gotten very smart to picking up if someone's spewing something they've memorized from a book. By only saying what they think the employer wants to hear, job candidates are simply putting on an act, and employers can see right through that. You have to be yourself in an interview and you have to be sincere.<br /><br />They don't expect you to have all the answers<br />Employers are more interested in how you find answers to things you don't know than if you pretend to know something you don't. In some cases, the interviewer may ask a question that he or she doesn't expect you to be able to answer simply to see how you handle it. If you ever find that you don't know the answer to an interviewer's question, the best thing to do is to admit that you don't know, but either add that you could give an educated guess or provide a way you might go about finding the answer. Most important, if you don't know, don't try to fake it. Not knowing is OK. Making something up or pretending to know is not.<br /><br />They want you to want them<br />You need to express genuine interest in the job or the company. Finding Health Care Coverage While You Continue Your Job Search - Options for the Unemployed

What opportunities are the best fit for your abilities and experience? How can you stay connected to your important references? Are you able to improve the job skills that you have, or develop new ones? <br /><br />When you are so focused on finding your next job, you might neglect something that is always important: your health. And if you've lost your job, you might not have access to the benefits you used to have with your employer, including health insurance. Unfortunately, this is a problem that more individuals are facing with the rising unemployment rate, which reached 9.8 percent in September 2009.<br /><br />In order to help protect your personal and family health and financial security, it's essential to find health care coverage during this time. There are a couple of important options you can consider in this situation, as well as some general tips that can help guide whatever decision you make.<br /><br />Individual Health Insurance Plans<br /><br />Because most people receive health insurance through their jobs, they are not familiar with individual insurance plans. A 2009 Aetna survey of recently unemployed professionals conducted by Linescale Research found that, 69 percent of people had never heard of individual health insurance plans or did not know much about them. <br /><br />These plans come in all shapes and sizes. You can purchase comprehensive coverage for you and your family that may look very similar to what was offered through your previous employer, or choose a lower level of coverage for a more affordable price. In terms of cost, what you pay is based on the type of plan you want, your age, where you live and your health. Some plans for children and young adults can start with a premium as low as $40 a month and there are quite a few that can be found with premiums for under $100 a month. Individual health insurance plans may be subject to medical underwriting and other restrictions.<br /><br />Almost all insurers have Web sites. For example, Aetna has a Web site (http://www.aetna.com/members/individuals/health/aetnahealthnow/select.html) where you can research plans using an interactive advisor named David, get quotes and even apply online.<br /><br />In addition, there are also Web sites like eHealthInsurance.com that let you compare plans where you live. You can also contact a local broker who can help answer any questions you might have when comparing plans.<br /><br />COBRA<br /><br />Depending on your employer, you may be eligible to continue receiving health insurance through your employer through something called COBRA coverage. This can cover you for up to 18 months after losing a job.<br /><br />While the Aetna survey found that more people were aware of this option than they were of individual coverage availability, there was a lot of confusion over the cost. The typical cost of COBRA coverage can be as much as 102 percent of the total premium, which is the actual cost of the plan and not just the amount an employee contributes to the premium. Without an employer contributing a portion of the premium payments, paying double or more is not unheard of for an individual to keep the same health insurance coverage.<br /><br />As part of the national economic stimulus package, people who were involuntarily terminated (or may lose their jobs) between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009 and who elect COBRA coverage may be eligible to receive a 65 percent subsidy of the total COBRA premium for up to nine months.<br /><br />These changes are a positive temporary solution and will make COBRA coverage more affordable for eligible consumers. Even with this subsidy, however, consumers may still be able to find individual health insurance plans that are less expensive and fit their budgets better.<br /><br />You can visit the U.S. Department of Labor Web site at www.dol.gov to learn more about these changes.<br /><br />Questions to Consider<br /><br />While individual health insurance plans and COBRA are two important options to think about, every person has a distinct situation. When making this decision, there are three questions that anyone can use to figure out the most appropriate health plan for his or her unique needs.<br /><br />1. How long do you expect to go without insurance? Not having insurance for a few months is very different from not having it for a few years.<br /><br />2. How much coverage do you need? A young man looking for his first job and a mother of two who owns her own business will make very different choices. <br /><br />3. How much do you want to pay? A lower premium (the amount you pay each month) might seem to be the best way to save a few bucks. How to Network Without Being Phony, Lame or Desperate

You can probably think of 100 other things you'd rather do -- like cleaning the blades of your ceiling fan. But if you're one of the 14.9 million who are competing for what seems to be a handful of jobs, your confidence has probably taken a hit. So now is probably not the time to be meeting anyone new. In fact, now is not the time to get out of your pajamas. <br /><br />Ah. But it is. Networking is the single most valuable thing you can do with all this free time you've got now. It will help you build the relationships that will stay with you for the rest of your career. You will learn more about your profession, industry and community. It will protect you from becoming an out-of-touch doofus. And, best of all, it will put you in front of people who have leads on jobs that haven't been published yet (the hidden job market). Through active networking, you could be the only candidate who is considered for that great job. Why? Because you got there first. Networking will do that for you. So while you change your clothes, change your mind about networking too! Here's how:<br /><br />Remember there's nothing phony, lame or desperate about being out of a job.<br />With so many people who have been laid off, people are expecting to hear from you and help you. Call them.<br /><br />Change your mind about what you're networking for.<br />If you think that one meeting this afternoon is going to land you a job, you're going to sound desperate. Each meeting is a chance to tell your story about what you do and who would benefit from your talent. So try to relax and take each meeting as it comes. Some that you have high expectations for will turn out to be duds. Some that you think will be long-shots will be gold mines. You're networking not to land a job but to meet people, who will then introduce you to others, who will then introduce you to still others -- one of whom will one day say, "When can you start?"<br /><br />Remember that it's not all about you.<br />You're meeting because the two of you have something in common (similar job title, shared interest in the profession, industry or community, the person works in a company that interests you). Focus on that commonality and explore possibilities that spring from that commonality. Truly listen to what that person is saying, don't just wait until their lips stop moving so you can start talking yourself.<br /><br />Be yourself.<br />That is, be your best self. Don't be the self that wants to stay home in your pajamas, hugging a pint of Ben and Jerry's tight. Be the self who is at the top of your professional game, with a wealth of value to still deliver to the world, with a track record of successes that you still keep top of mind.<br /><br />Tell your story without the usual job -search downers.<br />If your story tends to end with, "And then I got laid off," you might want to rewrite your script. Focus on your accomplishments and the fact that people noticed your potential throughout your career. Be real about how it is you're between jobs right now, just like "a lot of really great people these days" (use those words). And then immediately ask your networking partner a question about the company, industry trends, anything that shows you're still a player in your field and ready to start contributing again.<br /><br />Have a full calendar. <br />No networking meeting should ever be the last networking meeting you have scheduled. Always have something else (lots of something else's) lined up. No one wants to be anyone's last, best hope.<br /><br />Have an agenda.<br />Many job seekers only have a vague notion of what to talk about in a networking meeting so networking becomes synonymous with small-talk. Small-talk does not impress anybody unless you're looking for a hostess job. Spend two minutes talking about your background, 15-30 minutes talking about the jobs and employers on your target list, and the rest of the time talking current trends in the industry. Don't forget, like any good business meeting, end it on time. Don't dawdle. Don't linger. Don't ask for that second cup of coffee. Get out politely, but get out. <br /><br />Thank your networking partner immediately afterward and confirm you'll stay in touch.<br />It's amazing how few people actually do this. Stand out! Send a note. Send an e-mail. Say thank you. And report back on how you followed up on all that great advice you just got. Keep that person informed of your progress. And you'll continue to have a lively network of people who care about you and respect you for the rest of your career.<br /><br />Pay it back. <br />You may be out of work. Secrets for an Effective Job Search: Turn a Cold Call Into a Warm Call

However, if you are serious about finding a job -- and in these tough times, you have to be -- it is pretty much a requirement. You might just land the perfect opportunity as a result of speaking with people you don't know very well (or even at all) who can support you in your job search. At first, cold calling can feel like "picking up a 10,000-pound telephone," but that is something you must overcome.<br /><br />Fear is probably the No.1 reason people avoid making telephone calls as part of a job search. Fear and faith make poor roommates because one dispels the other. Nobody wants to get a rejection in real time. However, like they say in sports -- you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take, so you might as well give it a go. Employers expect these kinds of calls as part of their job and are usually willing to talk to callers. Good companies and managers are always interested in talented candidates, even if they aren't referred to them by a recruiter or human resources. Here are some tips for when it's time to reach out:<br /><br />1. Write a script for improved effectiveness.<br />· Outline what you want to get across on the telephone to give you the advantage of a polished message. The time to rehearse is not when you are talking to your contact. <br /><br />· Time yourself not to exceed 60 seconds. Practice a 10-20 second version, better known as an elevator pitch. <br /><br />· Make your first impression a good one. Sound energetic and enthusiastic, even if you're feeling discouraged. Fake it until you make it. <br /><br />2. Getting past the telephone gatekeeper<br />The first person to answer the telephone may be a receptionist or "gatekeeper" and requires diplomacy. You have to find the right balance between being blunt and being dishonest. <br /><br />Example: "Hello, my name is Susan Jones. Would you please tell me the name of the manager involved in your company's hiring decisions?" When you are ready, call and ask to speak to the manager by name. If the greeter asks you about the nature of your call, simply tell him or her that you want to address a letter to the manager with information that may be of interest. Also, be sure to ask for the correct spelling of that manager's name. <br /><br />3. Voice message<br />If you must leave a message after a few unsuccessful attempts at getting in touch with the hiring manager, leave a brief message. <br /><br />Example: "I would like to talk with you about my qualifications for the program director position and learn whether there might be a mutual interest in my candidacy." <br /><br />· Use the name of the person who referred you, if possible. <br /><br />· Avoid phone tag by offering two proposed times. Ask them to call again to confirm. <br /><br />· Recite your name and telephone number slowly. Saying this information too quickly may cost you a call back. <br /><br />· Be prepared for an interview over the phone.<br /><br />· You may be able to reach the executive before or after regular nine-to-five office hours. <br /><br />· It is acceptable to leave up to about three or four voice mails for which your persistence may pay off. You may lose a job opportunity waiting for an employer to return your call. Someone who is clearly interested will get the job instead. <br /><br />4. Phone interview<br />If and when you finally do get the hiring manager on the phone, it is much more impressive if you can connect with him or her on a personal level. Breaking the ice before the call has even begun is a great way to relieve tension for both parties.<br /><br />· Perform research to reference something unique about the company or the individual of interest. This allows you to differentiate yourself from other applicants. <br /><br />· Reach out to individuals on LinkedIn and other social networking sites that serve as a bridge to cold-calling and the desired face-to-face conversations. Work up to meeting with people after developing relationships through e-mail and discussions on the internet. This is a "safe" way to develop relationships.<br /><br />· Go one step warmer. Find a connection between you and the person you want to reach. Begin with people within organizations who can be helpful without asking for a job. Request an introduction, advice on your resume, or if you can job shadow to better understand the expectations for the job title.<br /><br />In summary, engage in these activities to help transform discouragement into hope that you will land another job. Expect some discouraging periods at times, but that is not permission to give in to them and just stop. Feel the fear and "pick up the 10,000 pound telephone" anyway. Show courage in the midst of feeling fear. Our greatest challenges are usually the means that give way to significant professional growth. Your future work is ahead of you and you must move forward to reach your goals. What Do Common Interview Questions Really Mean? - How to determine what a hiring manager wants to know

Because you've heard them so often, you feel you can practically answer them in your sleep. <br /><br />But are you providing the best responses possible?<br /><br />Often, a seemingly simple question can have hidden layers of meaning. What is the interviewer really hoping to learn when he or she asks why you want to work for the firm? <br /><br />Following are a few interview questions you're likely to hear the next time you meet with a prospective employer and insight into the qualities employers may be assessing with each one. Armed with this information, you can get to the heart of what a potential employer truly wants to know.<br /><br />Question: "Why do you want to work here?"<br />Many people talk in vague terms about how they feel they could excel in the role, why the job sounds appealing or what they admire most about the company. But hiring managers want you to cover more than the basics in your response.<br /><br />What it really means: "How much do you know about this company, and why are you hoping to work here instead of for one of our competitors?" When answering this question, mention specifics. You might note, for example, that you're excited by the firm's cutting-edge research, a recent merger or the company's corporate social responsibility programs. A detailed response will tell the interviewer that you are interested in more than just a paycheck. At the same time, showing that you've done your research lets the hiring manager know that you came prepared and are serious about the opportunity.<br /><br />Question: "What are your strengths?"<br />Answers such as "I work well with others" or "I have a can-do attitude" may in fact be strengths, but many job candidates make the same type of statements, and a generic response will do little to distinguish you from other applicants.<br /><br />What it really means: "How have you used your strengths to add value to your employer?" The interviewer wants to know how the particular talents you bring to the table will benefit the firm if you're hired, so put your best qualities in context. Talk about how your strengths can help meet a prospective employer's specific needs. In this economy, many firms are trying to cut costs, for instance. Your experience negotiating vendor contracts, for instance, could be a boon to your chances.<br /><br />Question: "What are your weaknesses?"<br />People usually try to list weaknesses that can actually be seen as strengths, such as "I'm too much of a perfectionist" or "I never say no when people ask for help." These types of answers can seem canned and could make the interviewer wonder what you're hiding.<br /><br />What it really means: "How honest and self-aware are you?" and "How have you successfully dealt with a challenge in your career or adversity on the job?" Everyone has weaknesses, but not everyone will admit to it. Employers look for workers who can recognize their own weaknesses and also take steps to overcome them. Show the hiring manager you can do both. If one of your weaknesses is a fear of speaking in public, for example, you could point out how you had to speak in front of your executive team to present a project proposal. Although nerve-racking, the situation forced you to confront your weakness and take steps, such as first presenting at smaller meetings with your colleagues, to improve in this area prior to the big meeting. Since then, you've also joined Toastmasters International and continue to improve.<br /><br />Question: "Would you rather work alone or in a team?"<br />This borders on being a trick question, because it's rare that someone would be required to just do one or the other in today's workplace.<br /><br />What it really means: "Can you work with minimal direction?" and "Can you describe a time when you worked with a colleague or group to solve a workplace challenge?" Managers seek individuals who can take the ball and run with it. They may not always have the time to walk you through a project step-by-step, so you need to be able to work autonomously and devise solutions on your own.<br /><br />At the same time, you need to be able to work with individuals from different levels, departments, offices or even companies, so the hiring manager is trying to gauge how well you can collaborate with others. You might cite an instance when you led a project team, for instance, to improve your chances of securing the job offer. <br /><br />By knowing what types of responses interviewers truly seek with seemingly simple questions, you give yourself a much better chance of impressing the hiring manager. After all, he or she has probably gotten used to hearing the same responses over and over again. The Power of Environmental Education

Sometimes you're too busy to put down your thoughts. But then, every once in awhile, something makes you stop and remember why you do what you do. And sometimes, it's better to let someone else tell the story. </span></strong><br /><strong><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></strong><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>Below, you will find an essay from friend, volunteer and fellow educator, Mike Sustin. His essay is about how environmental education can truly inspire, not just our students, but even ourselves. Thanks Mike, for reminding me of why I love my job.<br /><br /></strong><em>In 2006 I was given the green light to develop an Environmental Science course at West Geauga High School, my alma mater and my place of employment for the past eleven years. While developing the course, I spent an enormous amount of time reaching out to resource people at other schools and at the Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District, Geauga Park District, Ohio Division of Wildlife, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Environmental Education Council of Ohio. Everyone I spoke with was incredibly encouraging, but everyone had a different perspective on how Environmental Education (EE) ought to be offered and on what it should be focused. Environmental Science is interdisciplinary by nature (no pun intended) and requires students to really wrap their minds around complicated issues and to draw upon prior knowledge and skills from other courses. I chose a textbook, I planned some laboratory experiences and field trips, but ultimately, I decided to keep an open mind and let my students’ interests drive the direction of the course.<br /><br />After working with the first two groups of students through the first year, I became acutely aware of two problems that so many Environmental Education professionals had been lamenting for years. First, our kids are indeed suffering from “nature deficit disorder,” a phrase coined by author Richard Louv in his best-selling book, Last Child in the Woods. These wonderful students, all of them seniors, most of them voting for the first time during their final year of high school, know so much and yet don’t know enough to really care about what they can personally embrace and purposefully impact.<br /><br />Three days that changed my life were spent on summer vacation in 2008 with Annie Rzepka and Nancy Speck of the Geauga SWCD, Jen White of the Portage SWCD, and over a dozen other teachers on a three day road trip called the Advanced Wonders of Watersheds Workshop. We piled into vans and explored EE opportunities all across the north coast from beautiful Burton all the way to the Oak Openings Region near Toledo. On the long ride home I decided that a trip like this needed to be offered to my high school students. How better to help them understand than to get them out there in the diverse environments of their home state and let them connect the dots on their own?<br /><br />On June 23, 2009, the first ever Summer Ecology Experience Across Ohio was ready to hit the road. At 6:30 am in the parking lot of West Geauga High School a group of nine students and their three chaperones loaded the vans for what would be an eight day and seven night road trip across Ohio. The itinerary included programs at Black Swamp Bird Observatory and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge near Oak Harbor, Ohio State University’s Stone Lab at Put- In-Bay, the Army Corps of Engineers office at Caesar Creek State Park and The Museum at Fort Ancient near Wilmington, the outdoor drama, “Tecumseh!” in Chillicothe, Hocking Hills State Park and concluded at Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve in Huron.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT7UjfIBzdmhyObepEsIk-zRYM4jhLyeCo5x0lqPstAqMhSSIVlD7Tp6vFIzBykCVnhKz6i-aR2hP4p59RifqMPwoPN8Sd-uzVEUFPZM8IypHBPZruZYQJ_Tv0tynQL_zL5occvhOlEKE1/s1600-h/IMG_2358.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393275347450606658" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT7UjfIBzdmhyObepEsIk-zRYM4jhLyeCo5x0lqPstAqMhSSIVlD7Tp6vFIzBykCVnhKz6i-aR2hP4p59RifqMPwoPN8Sd-uzVEUFPZM8IypHBPZruZYQJ_Tv0tynQL_zL5occvhOlEKE1/s320/IMG_2358.JPG" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 214px" /></a>The entire program was intended to address big picture topics such as conservation and preservation of habitat, human history of land use, and geology. Students were also engaged in activities on edible and medicinal plants, water quality monitoring, watershed management, wildlife identification, and rock climbing and rappelling. Moreover, all of this education was accomplished outdoors and outside each student’s comfort zone away from their families, camping in tents, cooking their own food, caring for each other and learning to deal with fears.<br /><br />Student learning was assessed through daily journal assignments and other entries including poetry and artwork. An assessment strategy I had adopted from the Wonders of Watersheds workshops was the use of haiku. Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that uses only three lines, the first and third lines contain only five syllables and the second line contains seven syllables. The brevity of this form of poetry requires students to focus on key elements of a lesson and how they have internalized the material. Each of them made the obvious connections I had planned, and all of them made the connections I had hoped they would catch. After reading their journals, I was pleasantly surprised, time after time, with the quality of the introspective entries the students had made. Each of them commenting on how one experience or another changed them, or brought a sudden clarity to their place in the world. In the heart of this teacher, I had only privately hoped that a student or two might have reached this level of informed understanding. All the hurdles that you can think of are just excuses. All you need is an imagination. Pay attention to your students. Take them outside and you will find your lesson plans under that rotten log or in the stream or mud puddle or at the birdfeeder. The Ohio Academic Content Standards should not be viewed as an anchor around your neck, and pointing to that thick green book as an excuse is exactly that. Taking kids outside provides for boundless integration opportunities for science, math, language arts, social studies and more. Get on the phone or the internet and contact your SWCD, your park district, the Ohio Division of Wildlife, or the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and you will be amazed at the resources waiting for you to use for free and in your own schoolyard. Lastly, I will share a quote from Rachel Carson that has inspired me in my growing career as an environmental educator, hopefully it strikes a chord. “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”</em><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;"></span>
