According to Dr. Susan Farr, a research professor in geriatrics at the Saint Louis University of Medicine. she has found that certain proprietary compounds formulated with antioxidants coming from these plants appear to improve memory and learning.  Deficits in these cognitive abilities are known to be a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating neurological disease which affects more than 5 million Americans.  People with Alzheimer’s disease experience memory loss and loss of cognitive abilities due to the death of brain cells.  While it starts mild, it gets progressively worse, leaving its victims confused and forgetful.  Although it predominantly affects older people, it can affect people as young as 30 if there is a family history of the disease.  There is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease.  The proprietary compounds which Farr tested were made with antioxidant-based ingredients coming from spearmint extract as well as two different doses of a similar formulation made from rosemary extract.  They were tested on mice with age-related cognitive decline. Farr says that she found that higher doses of the rosemary extract had the most effect in improving learning and memory out of the three behaviors that were tested.  A lower dose of rosemary extract improved memory in two of the tests performed.  The spearmint extract also improved memory. In addition, Farr found signs of lowered oxidative stress in the parts of the brain associated with learning and memory.  Oxidative stress is considered to be a marker for age-related declines in cognition. However, Far says it’s too soon to know whether these herbs will help humans or even what doses might be needed if they do help.   The experiments were performed in animals so it’s not possible to extrapolate from these data any recommendations for humans.  Farr says she believes that eating spearmint and rosemary are probably good for you, but that she is not prepared to make any sort of recommendation at this point that people start consuming more of these herbs. But, Farr says her work with the herbal extracts is quite promising and she believes that they are worth further study. Farr presented the findings from her work at Neuroscience 2013, which was held on November 11. The presentation coincides with National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, which occurs each year in November.  The event, which seeks to raise awareness about the disease and its effects on families, has been held every year since 1983, when it was begun by a proclamation from President Ronald Reagan.  Rather ironically, it was later claimed by his son Ron that Reagan had been suffering from the disease himself while he was still president. Reaching across the aisle as he prepares to become the 72nd governor of Virginia, Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe <a href="http://www.newsleader.com/viewart/20131115/NEWS01/311150005/McAuliffe-creates-transition-team" target="_blank">announced his transition committee</a> as he prepared to follow in the footsteps of such notable leaders as Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe, Among the list of 52 public and business leaders on his team, the Democrat included Republicans. Senator John Watkins (R-Powhatan) and Delegate Chris Peace (R-Hanover) were picked along with political consultant Boyd Marcus and Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms. Reaching out should be a good thing, right? Politics has become so polarizing that those willing to listen to the opposite side should be applauded ... right? Apparently not.  On Friday, conservative activist Ben Marchi noted on his Facebook page that he had heard from grumblers: <blockquote>I got phone calls this morning from some of my favorite AFP activists who were angry with Christopher Kilian Peace for accepting this appointment. My response was, "If Terry McAuliffe has asked you to participate in his administration and if there's something you can do to make Virginia a better place to live, work, & raise a family, then you should do it, and any other Virginian ought to do the same. It's better that conservatives have a seat at the table, than not at all." Am I wrong? Thoughts?</blockquote>Several dozen comments had been left by Friday evening, most in agreement with Ben's sentiment but some expressing concerns while 55 people gave a thumbs up. Delegate Peace took to Facebook, too, to comment about his appointment: <blockquote>As you know, I have a very strong conservative voting record and to that end worked hard and invested resources in electing Republicans to office this and every cycle. At this point it is critically important that with the prospects of losing all three statewide races that our common sense conservative perspective have a seat at the table. I see my temporary role in transition as giving the people of my district as well as my conservative friends the biggest and best voice in their state government possible. Now is not the time for name calling or taking the ball and going home. Virginia deserves civility and honor, and real leadership requires listening and being engaged in dialogue. It isn’t easy but it is necessary. </blockquote>Delegate Peace is correct ... Virginia deserves civility and honor. Ben is correct ... conservatives need a seat at the table. State insurance regulators hesitate to embrace Obamacare fix [ BeritaTerkini ]

California, Colorado, Florida, South Carolina, Ohio and Oregon said they would act on Obama’s offer, announced on Thursday, to give a one-year extension to existing policies. Washington, Vermont and Rhode Island – all of which are running their own state-based insurance exchanges – said they would not. But at least 16 insurance departments queried by Reuters from states as diverse as Alabama, Virginia, Minnesota, Maryland and Michigan said they did not have enough information and were still trying to decide how to proceed. The responses highlight the complexity of efforts to modify unpopular, or unworkable elements of Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Several million Americans stand to have their individual health insurance canceled at some point in 2014 despite a pledge by Obama that people who liked their benefits would be able to keep them under his law. That pledge became a focus of Republican efforts to change or delay Obamacare, culminating in a vote in the House of Representatives on Friday on a Republican bill to keep the existing policies. It was supported by 39 members of Obama’s Democratic party. But Obama’s decision to allow an extension requires each state to examine whether it can do so under existing laws. Some regulators are waiting for answers from the federal government on the guidelines for allowing insurers to increase the prices on these plans in 2014. At stake, they say, is the financial viability of the health plans and the insurers. Unexpected changes in the mix of healthy and sick, young and old people who choose the existing plans over new Obamacare-compliant policies could mean that some insurers lose money and policyholders end up empty-handed. “There are so many moving parts to this process. When you tamper with one, no matter how good your intention is, you have intended consequences and unintended consequences,” Ben Nelson, chief executive of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, said in an interview. NO INPUT Nelson and regulators who are undecided said they were not asked for input on Obama’s proposal and first heard of it on Thursday. “From a regulator’s perspective, it was a little disappointing to come up with this idea and not check with the regulators to see if functionally it was going to work,” said Wisconsin Deputy Insurance Commissioner Dan Schwartzer. Insurers also were unaware of the plan until it was announced, according to two industry sources. On Friday, they met with the President at the White House to “brainstorm” how to make the fix work. Schwartzer said he was looking to hear back from administration officials as soon as possible with more information that would help Wisconsin decide how to proceed, though he said that like some other states the department had already encouraged insurers to issue early renewals on expiring policies through most of 2014. In addition to Obama’s Thursday speech outlining the fix, commissioners have a 2-1/2 page letter from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services that contains guidelines for carrying it out. Regulators have had several conference calls in the last two days, including at least one that included officials from CMS, several state insurance department sources said. The pressure is on insurers to implement this change by the end of December before plans start to be canceled on January 1. “The president is essentially asking them to do in the next six weeks what normally takes a year to do, which is offer a policy and certify it for sale … I think they can do something but I don’t think they are going to get a radical impact on the number of people with dropped policies,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, President of the American Action Forum and a health economist. Among states that have decided how to proceed, some that plan to allow the fix do so out of opposition to Obamacare. “Of course we will let South Carolinians keep their insurance plans. They never should have lost them in the first place, and should be able to keep them far beyond this one-year ‘fix’ that President Obama is proposing. Obamacare is a complete disaster, and we don’t want any part of it,” said Doug Mayer, spokesman for Republican Governor Nikki Haley. The few that have rejected the fix were states that early on embraced the new health marketplaces under Obamacare and say it will create an imbalance in their fledgling market. Vermont had already worked with local insurers to allow state residents and small business to extend their current policies until March 31, and won’t go further than that. “We remain confident in that timeframe and believe it will provide Vermonters the security and options they need,” Governor Peter Shumlin said in a statement. The wheelchair with wheels that lit up is owned by Stephen Gibson, who suffers from cerebral palsy and scoliosis. On Sunday, Stephen and his family realized thieves had broken into their garage and taken it along with $ 200 worth of holiday groceries from a freezer. When Stephen and his mother, Barbara Gibson, told their story to local media a citywide hunt for the wheelchair ensued. Although the chair was returned, one of the wheels is bent, the emergency brakes have been removed and the wheels no longer light up, Gibson said. Even though the chair was damaged, Gibson says her son is “ecstatic” to have it back. Stephen is now using a temporary wheelchair from his school and local medical equipment supplier Invacare has offered to replace Gibson’s wheelchair with two new ones. One of the wheelchairs will have light-up wheels and the other is a sports chair so he can play basketball. The chairs will be ready for delivery in about two weeks, according to an Invacare spokeswoman. Cleveland Police spokeswoman Jennifer Ciaccia said police will review tapes from cameras positioned outside of the station to see who returned the chair, noting the person or persons may not be same one who stole the chair. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>Commentary This is a story about words, which is why the terminology the NBA used in announcing part of its $25,000 fine for Matt Barnes was so revealing in its vagueness: 'inappropriate language.' Not hateful language, not racially insensitive language, not inflammatory language. Inappropriate. It was both the weakest possible phrase and the strongest indicator that the NBA feels hampered in its ability to police an issue that society is far from resolving: the use of the N-word by African-Americans. The league had the luxury of lumping Barnes' tweet -- the one in which he said, 'I love my teammates like family, but I'm DONE standing up for these n---as! All this s--- does is cost me money.' -- in with a multitude of offenses. He was in violation of the NBA policy that prohibits active players from using social media during games, and he had failed to leave the court in 'a timely manner' following his ejection for shoving Serge Ibaka near the end of the second quarter of a game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night. So technically, this is not strictly about Barnes' use of the word -- which serves only to bring the issue to the forefront. It's so telling that the NBA had a chance to take a stand but punted. And a football term is only appropriate, since the NFL's Riley Cooper and Richie Incognito made use of the N-word a national story earlier this year. Cooper was fined by his team, the Philadelphia Eagles. Incognito was suspended indefinitely by the Miami Dolphins after the leak of a transcript of a threatening, racially charged voicemail he left teammate Jonathan Martin. Both cases involved white men referring to African-Americans. Barnes is an African-American tweeting about a team whose roster is 85 percent black. You'd have to stretch like a ballet dancer to reach the point of interpreting it as racist. But if the NBA didn't act now, how could it penalize a white player who used the same word? (You'll notice Incognito filed a grievance over his suspension, leaving the Dolphins to account for prior, unchecked, uses of the word by Incognito and other players on the team.) So the NBA tried to suppress it without going out of its way to say 'we're suppressing it.' That's because the league is trying to tiptoe into someone else's civil war. You see how this is a difficult situation for the Clippers and the NBA? How does an organization take external control over an internal issue? That's as tricky to determine as why African-Americans feel the need to be the largest perpetuator -- by far -- of a word whose original intent was to demean and belittle them. I've heard the rationale that African-Americans use it to take control of the word. If that's the goal, it's been a colossal failure. Because if African-American use of the N-word had successfully defused it, it wouldn't be such an explosive story when Cooper or Incognito said it. [+] Enlarge<img src="http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2013/1114/nba_g_matt-barnes_mb_300x200.jpg" width="600"/> All that's been accomplished through use of the word in hip-hop lyrics, comedy shows and casual conversation is to integrate it into the national lexicon, for better or (mostly) worse. Young white kids who hear it in their favorite songs think it's funny. Young African-Americans who never heard it while being blasted with fire hoses, attacked by dogs or harassed as they walked into school think it sounds cool. My stance on the word can be summarized by Laurence Fishburne's response to Samuel L. Jackson in Spike Lee's 'School Daze.' That doesn't mean I won't sing along when it comes up in one of my favorite songs. That's the great paradox. It's inextricably woven into black culture. Where I draw the line is calling anyone else by that word. Or allowing someone to call me that. Should it be left to individuals, even if it means tolerating use by a white person, as apparently was the case in the Miami Dolphins' locker room? No. If it's offensive to someone, it shouldn't be said by anyone in an area that's under the NBA's jurisdiction. And when players are in a public setting -- be it the court, in the locker room during media access periods, or on Twitter -- there should be a zero-tolerance policy. That way you don't have to worry about making exceptions when the 'wrong' person uses a word that's heard in locker rooms daily, whether from players or the music coming through the speakers. For now, according to an NBA office source, the league feels empowered to act when the word is used in a news conference or on social media. 'At the present, the line gets drawn there,' the source said. 'Will that line stay there? That's the question.' On Thursday, I heard a story about a team executive who overheard a black player in the midst of an on-camera interview call out to a black teammate who was leaving the locker room, 'Hey, where you going, n---a?' The executive, who was white, pulled the two players aside and told them they couldn't use that word in front of the media anymore. His rationale: This was a professional work environment, and they had to act accordingly. And there's the solid ground for a stronger policy. Would people who use the word with their buddies say it in their office? They wouldn't, because they'd know better. They'd also be more hesitant if the league took a stronger stand. In 2011, when Kobe Bryant was caught on camera using an anti-gay term as he cursed an official during a game, the league hit him with a $100,000 fine that was accompanied by a firm statement from commissioner David Stern, who called Bryant's comment 'offensive and inexcusable.' 'Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society,' Stern said. The news release announcing the Barnes fine didn't carry a word from Stern or any other league officials. Barnes had already apologized, showing that either his clearer head had prevailed or someone had lectured him. But the league didn't drop the hammer this time. It might be a missed opportunity. Almost two years after a word cost Bryant six figures, Bryant chastised a Twitter follower for using 'gay' as a derogatory term. Will it bring an end to anti-gay behavior? Angel On A Leash is a New York based organization that has taken this one step further and leverages the outstanding caring and healing capacity of dogs. Through their research and work, they have proven that "therapy dogs help people physically, emotionally and socially. It's known as the therapeutic touch." David Frei, known to millions of fans and viewers as the longtime co-host of the annual telecast of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and National Dog Show, is the founder of Angel On a Leash. When asked what inspired him to found Angel On A Leash, Mr. Frei told us that he was inspired to create the organization when his dog Belle passed away in the summer of 2009 and he wrote an obit for her talking about all the things she had done and shared it with his friends. That's when he knew that through dog therapy, he could help those that need it most. Angel On A Leash sets itself apart from other animal therapy programs through their customized approach to therapy. They recognize that each facility has its own unique needs and culture and therefore use only the most highly trained teams of insured volunteer handlers and their dogs. The therapy dogs must also be certified and registered. What began as a charitable activity of the Westminster Kennel Club in 2004, operating solely at the New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, has now grown into a therapy dog program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the Fisher House at the Michael DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and Ronald McDonald Houses in Memphis and Milwaukee. But that really isn't true. To celebrate the launch of the PlayStation 4, the developer has announced that the upcoming Destiny beta will debut on the PS4 and PS3. Pretty cool, right? If you pre-order the game at participating retailers, you will receive your spot in the play test. This is only good 'while supplies last,' though, so you had best get a move on. If you pre-ordered before October 1, 2013, you automatically qualify for the beta and you should receive your code via email. The beta will feature a 'diverse sampling of major activities in the full game' and is slated to kick off some time next year. It will eventually be available on the PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>DAVIE, Fla. - Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin met with NFL-appointed attorney Ted Wells in New York Friday to discuss allegations of player misconduct in the organization's locker room. The rest of the team will get its chance to talk next week. According to several players made available to the media after Friday's practice, they have been told that NFL representatives are planning to travel to the team facility next week to conduct part of the league's investigation. MORE: Stakes high in Dolphins bullying case Guard Richie Incognito has been suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team for his role in the alleged harassment of Martin, who left the team two weeks ago. Wells is directing the NFL's investigation of the Dolphins' workplace and will provide Commissioner Roger Goodell with a report that will be made public after he finalizes his interviews. The council, which typically comprises six players, was without Incognito, who had been selected by his teammates in training camp as one of the members. 'I'll just say this: It was a good meeting of the minds,' said defensive end Cameron Wake, who is another of the council members. 'Obviously guys on the team who've been around and who hopefully know what's best for the team helped - with alongside coach - kind of push things in the right direction. I don't want to get into specifics, but it's just whatever we can to kind of help this team and push us in the right direction. I think that group of people, along with the coaching staff is obviously going to help out.' The other players on the leadership council are quarterback Ryan Tannehill, center Mike Pouncey, linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and defensive tackle Paul Soliai. 'I'm not going to get into the details, but they had a couple of good suggestions in regard to some things that we're doing and those discussions are always internal, but it was a productive meeting,' Philbin said. The Dolphins declined to address Incognito filing a non-injury grievance against the team Thursday. Under the collective bargaining agreement, Incognito can be suspended a maximum of four games. After Friday's practice, players understood Incognito's decision. 'He's got to do what he's got to do,' wide receiver Mike Wallace said. 'I'm never going to tell somebody how to run their life. You've got to get your money, so I don't know. I don't really have too much to say about it.' 'The first couple of days it probably did, or whatever, but not as much anymore. 'At this point, what are we, two weeks now? That story's not as big for us anymore. It has died down a lot in here. Another massive wave of low-wage worker strikes may be upon us as labor unrest is rising at the Port of Los Angeles and Walmart workers walked off the job in three cities over the past 10 days. Yesterday, 20 port drivers at Total Transportation Service Inc. in Rancho Dominguez took a petition to management demanding they be recognized as employees and entitled to medical benefits. TTSi driver Jose Rosales told La Opinion, <blockquote class="tr_bq">In reality we are employees, but we have no benefits, not even my kids, or my wife.</blockquote>The publication also reported: <blockquote class="tr_bq">Drivers complain that the company charges them for insurance and parking charges, and leaves the costs of maintenance and fuel on his shoulders. “The truck is not mine, but I am paying maintenance," said (Dennis) Rosales.</blockquote>Earlier this week, drivers filed a lawsuit against Southern Counties Express Inc. alleging the drivers don't earn a fair wage, nor do they have time to eat and rest, all because they were misclassified as independent contractors. The lawsuit was filed before the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. Throughout the United States, workers trapped in low-wage jobs are revolting against a system that lavishly rewards a tiny sliver of the population and consigns more than half the U.S. population to near poverty. An <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/05/income-inequality-crisis_n_4221012.html?utm_hp_ref=business" rel="nofollow">analysis by Social Security released Tuesday </a>showed more than half of U.S. wage earners take home less than $30,000 a year. The <a href="http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/12poverty.shtml" rel="nofollow">federal poverty line</a> for a family of five in 2012 was $27,010. Meanwhile <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/stink-tanks-exposed-as-fronts-for-kochs.html" rel="nofollow">billionaire-funded propaganda</a> paints low-wage workers as lazy handout seekers and <a href="http://mediamatters.org/research/2013/08/02/report-foxs-month-of-inaccurate-minimum-wage-co/195192" rel="nofollow">Fox News</a> drives home the message. The real handouts go to companies like Walmart and McDonald's. In the U.S., <a href="http://usilive.org/walmarts-ruthless-rush-to-the-bottom-has-to-be-stopped/" rel="nofollow">18 percent of all food stamp recipients</a> and the largest group of people enrolled in Medicaid work for Walmart. In fact, the average Walmart worker receives $1,000 in government assistance because pay is so low. McDonald's has a “<a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-10-25/a-help-line-voice-saying-what-mcdonalds-wont-fast-food-workers-need-aid">McResource</a>” line that helps employees and their families enroll in various state and local assistance programs. Walmart employees since Black Friday have <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/teamsters-support-walmart-black-friday-strikes.html" rel="nofollow">ratcheted up community</a> pressure on the retailer by exposing the ways it <a href="http://www.ilsr.org/study-finds-walmart-increases-poverty/" rel="nofollow">devastates people's lives</a>, <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/how-walmart-brought-southern-wages-north.html" rel="nofollow">their communities</a> and their <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-11-13/how-mcdonald-s-and-wal-mart-became-welfare-queens.html" rel="nofollow">government treasuries</a>. Workers in the Walmart supply chain -- in <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/walmart-warehouse-workers-get-raise.html" rel="nofollow">warehouses</a>, on the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/money/la-fi-mo-port-truck-drivers-strike-20130826,0,7653965.story" rel="nofollow">ports</a> and in <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/02/hey-wal-mart-lets-call-it-what-it-is.html" rel="nofollow">food processing plants</a> -- are walking off the job to protest the degradation and poverty that Walmart foists on them. Teamsters, SEIU, UFCW and other allies have been with them every step of the way. Last week, 54 people, <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/teamsters-support-walmart-black-friday-strikes.html" rel="nofollow">including three Teamsters</a>, were arrested in peaceful acts of disobedience, to support striking Walmart workers in Los Angeles. And now the ports are restive again, just weeks after the first-ever one-day walkout by drivers at <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/LA-port-drivers-strike.html" rel="nofollow">Green Fleet Systems.</a> Discontent is only increasing at fast-food restaurants and for low-wage government contractors as employers have resisted calls for higher pay. And Walmart workers are ready to strike on Black Friday. This could be a long, cold, strike season.
