One in 10 Americans now takes an antidepressant medication; among women in their 40s and 50s, the figure is one in four.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">Experts have offered numerous reasons. Depression is common, and economic struggles have added to our stress and anxiety. Television ads promote antidepressants, and insurance plans usually cover them, even while limiting talk therapy. But a recent study suggests another explanation: that the condition is being overdiagnosed on a remarkable scale.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">The study, published in April in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, found that nearly two-thirds of a sample of more than 5,000 patients who had been given a diagnosis of depression within the previous 12 months <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23548817" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; " class="">did not meet the criteria for major depressive episode as described by the psychiatrists' bible</a>, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (or D.S.M.).</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">The study is not the first to find that patients frequently get "false positive" diagnoses for depression. Several earlier review studies have reported that <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19640579" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; " class="">diagnostic accuracy is low in general practice offices</a>, in large part because <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17968628" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; " class="">serious depression is so rare in that setting</a>.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">Elderly patients were most likely to be misdiagnosed, the latest study found. Six out of seven patients age 65 and older who had been given a diagnosis of depression did not fit the criteria. More educated patients and those in poor health were less likely to receive an inaccurate diagnosis.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">The vast majority of individuals diagnosed with depression, rightly or wrongly, were given medication, said the paper's lead author, <a href="http://www.jhsph.edu/faculty/directory/profile/4936/Mojtabai/Ramin" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; " class="">Dr. Ramin Mojtabai</a>, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">Most people stay on the drugs, which can have a variety of side effects, for at least two years. "Feelings of sadness, the stresses of daily life and relationship problems can all cause feelings of upset or sadness that may be passing and not last long. But Americans have become more and more willing to use medication to address them."</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">By contrast, the Dutch College of General Practitioners last year urged its members to prescribe antidepressants only in severe cases, and instead to offer psychological treatment and other support with daily life. Officials noted that depressive symptoms may be a normal, transient reaction to disappointment or loss.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">Ironically, while many patients in the United States are inappropriately diagnosed with depression, many who actually have it suffer without treatment. Dr. Mark Olfson, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, noted that from the time they develop major depression, it takes Americans eight years on average to seek care.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">Diagnosing depression is an inherently subjective task, said Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, the president of the American Psychiatric Association.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">"It would be great if we could do a blood test or a lab test or do an EKG," Dr. Lieberman said, noting that similar claims of overtreatment have been made about syndromes like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. "A diagnosis is made by symptoms and history and observation."</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">The new study drew 5,639 individuals who had been diagnosed with depression from among a nationally representative sample of over 75,000 adults who took part in the National Survey of Drug Use and Health in 2009 and 2010. The subjects were then interviewed in person with questions based on the D.S.M.-4 criteria.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">Only 38.4 percent of the participants met these criteria for depression during the previous year, Dr. Mojtabai said.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">It's possible some of the participants did not appear to be depressed because they had already been successfully treated, said Dr. Jeffrey Cain, the president of the Academy of Family Physicians. Their improved mood may also have colored the way they responded to questions about the past.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">"If I'm checking people who are being treated for high blood pressure and taking medication, I would expect it to be better when I'm checking them," Dr. Cain said.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">According to the D.S.M., a diagnosis of major depressive episode is appropriate if the patient has been in a depressed mood and felt no interest in activities for at least two weeks, and also has <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK64063/" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; " class="">at least five symptoms that impair functioning almost every day</a>. These include unintentional weight gain or loss, problems sleeping, agitation or slowed reactions noticed by others, fatigue and low energy, feelings of excessive guilt or worthlessness, difficulty concentrating and recurrent thoughts of death.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">"We're not just talking about somebody who's having a bad day or got into an argument with their spouse," Dr. Lieberman said. <h1>What is markdown?</h1>With this post, I’m learning about <strong>markdown language</strong> and teaching you at the same time. I am a beginner at using markdown. I’ve found that the blog posts I write when I’m a beginner are more helpful to other beginners because there are things that more advanced people forget. Markdown is forgiving and pretty simple if you play with it.<br /><br />Now that the web is maturing and many are moving to tablet devices, we’ve realized that it really is more efficient to keep your hands on the keyboard. It is funny that we moved from the keyboard to the mouse because it was easier to use the mouse. Then we moved from the mouse to touching the screen because it was easier. Now, we’ve found that for some things - particularly text-rich activities like typing this post - keeping your hand on the keyboard really makes sense.<br /><br />Don’t get stressed. If you want to be more productive and you use <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.evernote.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Evernote">Evernote</a> or Blog or you write anything, you might want to use this. If you’re not there yet, just be aware that Markdown language exists and know that it is just a special way of formatting.<br /><h2>What apps use markdown?</h2>I’m using <a href="http://bywordapp.com/">Byword</a>. It is an app that lets you type without any toolbars or headers. I use it on my ipad. I use the markdown language to type adding the symbols as needed. If you pay for the <strong>premium version</strong> then you can post directly to <a href="http://www.evernote.com/">Evernote</a> , <a href="http://www.dropbox.com/">Dropbox</a>, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/">Blogger</a>, or <a href="http://www.tumblr.com/">Tumblr</a>. <br />There are other apps that use markdown. It is writing for smart people… you don’t have to be geek, just able to learn a few keys.<br /><br /><h2>How do I use Markdown?</h2>I intentially waited to post this blog for a week to make sure it is something I use. I do use it. In fact, I'm using it daily to take notes (see the notes above from some student brainstorming we did this week) to draft emails, and to draft blog posts. An easy way and a way for people who really are geeks.<br /><h4>Basic Hyperlink (<em>The Easy Way</em>)</h4>Basic hyperlink is like I did above is like this:<br /><code><br /></code><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><code>[My Tumblr Blog](http://www.vickidavis.me)</code></blockquote><br />It looks like this in the final document:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.vickidavis.me/">My Tumblr Blog</a><br /><br /><strong>Tips for the Basic Hyperlink for beginners:</strong><br /><ul><li>The first part in the brackets are the words you want to hyperlink</li><li>Second you put the hyperlink in parentheses.</li><li>DO NOT put a space between the brackets and the parentheses – it won’t work. This took me 10 minutes to figure out. I automatically space between everything. I almost chucked it all for this one reason. Learn from my mistake.</li></ul><h4>Time saving hyperlinks (<em>Advanced</em>)</h4>Let’s say that you are going to do a blog post or something longer with many hyperlinks. This is for <strong>advanced users</strong> but it works. <em>If you’re a beginner, SKIP this section! Trust me.</em> <br />So, if you have a hyperlink that you’re going to use and reuse, let’s say a Twitter handle or two. Here’s how you can do that.<br /><ol><li>Type in the words you want to hyperlink in brackets.</li><li>Then, type the letter you want to use to refer to it. (This is called a <em>variable</em> for those who get into programming.) This is a big time saver. Autotext lets you automate text you use a lot.</li><li>If you do not have the hyperlink typed at the bottom, it won’t work at all and the text will look just like you typed it. You must do Step 4 above or it doesn’t work.</li><li>Don’t repeat letters in a document.</li><li>You start over in a new document and have to retype the definitions at the bottom. This means you can reuse the letters in the new document.</li></ul><h4>What if I want to link to an image?</h4>This is a bit tricky because the image should already be up on the web. I would hold off on this unless you’re advanced. If you are, instead of a hyperlink, you paste the link to the image second. Remember, if you want a repeating image, it will work the same way as above.<br />So, I’ll do a simple image like this (sorry the link is so long). I found an image I wanted to show and copied the image link. You get there on an ipad by opening the image in a new tab by itself. Another hard lesson learned.<br /><h2>Manual Breaks</h2>When you have 2 or more spaces at the end of the line and press enter it makes a manual break. A <em>manual break</em> means one line in front of the other. <br /><br /><strong><br /></strong><strong>Tips for manual breaks</strong>If you want a full line in between, make sure that you press enter twice.<br />I used the <a href="https://github.com/fletcher/MultiMarkdown/blob/master/Documentation/Markdown%20Syntax.md" target="_blank">Markdown syntax guide</a> from github to test and make this work.<br /><h1>So, how will someone use this?</h1>Again, if you are <em>already</em> writing a lot - including blog posts, Evernote notes, books, and more… this can save you time.<br /><h2>Why markdown makes sense</h2>Any time your hand leaves the keyboard to do something whether it is swipe or click a mouse, you slow yourself down. When time is money and you’re working to draft or keep your wordcount up, typing in an app like Byword and using markdown can save you time. <br /><h2>Do I recommend markdown?</h2>I’m still learning markdown and will share how I keep using it. As with all productivity tips, time will tell. However, many productivity gurus I trust are using this type of app and for me, that means it is time to take a try.<br /><br />For now, after about a week of learning it, I'm using it more than three times daily, at least. Emails that are longer than a few sentences and longer notes for Evernote, I'm typing them in Byword first. It syncs to Dropbox as well. It is a bit interesting if you forget to export it and want to do that on Windows 8, but I've found an app that will do it there as well.<br /><br />Just remember, it is just a fast way to format and type designed for writers who are willing to try something new. If it freaks you out, don't do it.<br /><h2>How I’ll start using markdown</h2>I’ll experiment with markdown for taking Evernote notes and for writing. I’ll let you know what I think. Right now I’m syncing with Dropbox for this blog post and I’ll generate the HTML and paste it into Blogger.<br /><br />If I like it, I’ll pay the $4.99 for the premium version of Byword so I can publish to Blogger, Tumblr, and Evernote. (I did this after a day - it is worth it. I do admit that I do not like to publish straight to blogger because it won't let me do a draft - I export the HTML and copy it into Blogger and add pictures, etc.)<br /><h2>How are you using markdown?</h2>I would love to hear from those of you who’ve beat me to this trend and are already using it. <br />Do you mind leaving your thoughts in the comments or sharing links to blog posts you’ve written about why you like (or don’t like) markdown?<br /><br />As always, thank you for helping disseminate best practices. Seems as though I’m some kind of international man of mystery to most of you people and you get to wondering about me. The mosh pits were gross and full of guys who never showered or anything. People were doing crack and meth and it just wasn’t as fun as the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s had been. They wanted jobs, and good wages, and economic justice.<br /><br />They wanted the same things that low-wage workers are still fighting for today.<br /><br />Algernon Austin at the <a href="http://epi.org/" rel="nofollow">Economic Policy Institute</a> recently chronicled how far we still have to go to realize the dream of the March on Washington:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">March organizers demanded a minimum wage that could realistically be expected to lift a family out of poverty. Specifically, they demanded a minimum wage of $2.00 an hour (up from $1.15 an hour). We are nowhere near that goal today. Adjusting for inflation, that wage would be more than $13.00 an hour today, close to twice the current federal minimum wage of $7.25. In fact, the inflation-adjusted value of the minimum wage today is about $2.00 less than it was at its peak value in 1968 (Cooper and Hall 2013).</blockquote>Mark Vorpahl writing in <a href="http://truth-out.org/news/item/18094-the-august-24-march-on-washington-why-we-need-a-new-civil-rights-and-labor-movement#.Uga2QeX7p1s.facebook" rel="nofollow">truthout</a> notes the 1963 marchers also demanded a federal jobs program -- something not even contemplated today, though the unemployment rate is higher now than it was then.<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">The ten demands of the march included both calls for the "Withholding of Federal funds from all programs in which discrimination exists" and "Desegregation of all school districts in 1963." These were combined with "A massive federal program to train and place unemployed workers — Negro and white — on meaningful dignified jobs at decent wages" and "A national minimum wage act that will give all Americans a decent standard of living." </blockquote>Often overlooked is the fact that the 1963 March on Washington was organized by unions and by people close to the labor movement. A. Philip Randolph, president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, was in charge of the organizing effort.<br /><br />Labor unions, including the Teamsters, are again supporting a March on Washington on August 24. It's a move that will provide students with access to lab equipment and classroom space, and open a world of possibilities. <br /><br />The goal of STEM -- an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math -- is to help close the gap between education and industry, and further the economic vitality of the region. The overall program motivates students with hands-on learning to solve real problems with real solutions in a real-world situation. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.isa.org/InTechTemplate.cfm?template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=83593">InTech</a> reported in 2010 that STEM was a necessary part of future education because "most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math and science—10-year employment projections by the U.S. Department of Labor show that of the 20 fastest growing occupations projected for 2014, 15 of them require significant mathematics or science preparation." They also noted, "The 2010 ACT College and Career Readiness report found only 29% of the tested 2010 graduates are considered college-ready in science and 43% are considered college-ready in math."<br /><br />The STEM Academy curriculum works toward leveling the playing field for American students, offering them an opportunity to learn in an innovative, engaging classroom where they will develop critical thinking skills through hands-on, project-based learning. STEM Academy students will receive dual enrollment credits for all courses, allowing them the option to work toward a college degree. <br /><br />Additionally, the STEM Academy will offer transfer possibilities through articulation agreements with local colleges and universities for students wishing to continue their education. STEM Academy students will also be able to earn industry certifications, allowing for job readiness upon program completion. <br /><br />The Governor, who is fulfilling a campaign promise to Virginia students, noted, "We set a goal of making sure that every student, regardless of their zip code, would have access to a high quality education," and continued:<br /><blockquote>“Making sure Virginia’s students have access to the best education possible is the single most important thing we can do to ensure their success in the future. In today’s highly technical global economy, careers in science, technology, engineering and math are on the rise. <br /><br />"In order for our students to be successful and fill rapidly expanding technical jobs, we must ensure mastery of the STEM subjects. Over the last three years, we have seen a doubling of STEM academies in the Commonwealth. <br /><br />"Today, I am pleased to join XLR8, Central Virginia Community College and AREVA to cut the ribbon and officially open the Commonwealth’s 16th STEM academy. STEM academies are partnerships created between K-12 schools and our colleges which provide our students with new opportunities through the use of state of the art labs, access to instructors at the college level, and the ability to earn dual course credit.”</blockquote>Providing more science, technology, engineering, and math to students is a partnership of private business and government. In Lynchburg, the new STEM school has been a joint effort of Region 2000 Technology Council, Future Focus Foundation and Workforce Investment Board; Central Virginia Community College; the school divisions of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell and Lynchburg; and area business partners including AMTI, AREVA, The Babcock and Wilcox Company, Centra, Delta Star, and Wells Fargo.
