The constitution requires that the posts in two key institutions, the three-member presidency and the parliamentary House of Peoples, be equally divided among BOSNIAKS (BOSNIAN MUSLIMS), CROATS and SERBS. The EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS (ECtHR) ruled in 2009 this violates the EUROPEAN CONVENTION ON HUMAN RIGHTS (ECHR) by restricting others’ access. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The EUROPEAN court’s ruling has exposed long-buried contradictions in BOSNIA’S constitutional architecture, which have become more acute since the 31 May 2012 collapse of the government coalition. BOSNIAN politicians need to reform their constitution but reopening the DAYTON AGREEMENT will require more than a quick fix. The dispute is not driven by discrimination which all BiH parties agree must be eliminated. It is about whether, and how, to preserve the rights of BOSNIA’S constituent peoples, especially those of the CROATS who are the smallest group. Their position is likely to get a new boost when CROATIA joins the EU in 2013.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Though the ECtHR case is technical, it raises fundamental questions about BOSNIA’S constitutional architecture and has opened dangerous and important issues buried since the end of the war in 1995. In a stinging dissent, Judge Giovanni Bonello condemned the court’s judgment and warned of the dangers of challenging the status quo. It is no longer sustainable. Over the past two years, state institutions are under attack and there is a crisis of governance in the federation and the REPUBLIKA SRPSKA. But there are no quick fixes. It will mean reopening the DAYTON PEACE AGREEMENT which ended the 1992-1995 war, re-balancing the compromises made in that agreement, and embarking on a comprehensive constitutional reform. Though a return to violence remains unlikely, these issues are highly emotional and risk extending political paralysis and leading to state failure. BOSNIA’S leaders believe the EU requires only a technical fix, even if it leaves the country even less governable. Ultimately, the decisions taken will decide whether BOSNIA survives to move toward EUROPE or begins a process of disintegration that will not end peacefully. To avoid this grim prospect:</span></span></div><ul type="disc"><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">BOSNIA’S political leadership should refocus on constitutional reform, including the execution of the EUROPEAN court’s decision. It should adopt measures that: clarify whether and how elected and appointed officials are responsible to specific groups, all citizens, or those who voted them into office; allow voters rather than mid-level officials to choose national leaders; give CROATS an effective means of influencing state policy; provide room for those who identify as citizens rather than in ethnic terms to have a voice; and avoid overly complex rules prone to obstruction.</span></span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">EU states should lift their conditioning of BOSNIA’S candidacy on implementation of the court ruling. Comprehensive constitutional reform should be the end goal of membership talks, not its precondition. </span></span></li></ul><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: blue; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM AT THE DOORSTEPS OF EUROPE</span></b></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Disintegration of BOSNIA would cause considerable geopolitical and strategic implications for EUROPE for in most likelihood, fundamental Islam would gain a significant influence among the young generation of BOSNIAKS who already feeling that the EU has let them down. Should the economic situation in BOSNIA deteriorate further due to lack of funding from the EU, young unemployed and disillusioned BOSNIAKS could easily fall prey for Islamic fundamentalist organisations as well as countries such as TURKEY and SAUDI ARABIA taking advantage to infiltrate society and “force” their doctrines upon BOSNIAN society, all at the doorsteps of EUROPE! </span></span></div>

has a bit of color on its courts, which fascinates me for some reason (they normally are required by the tennis club to wear white in its championship). </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">The Main Blurb</b></div><div class="MsoNormal">This was my first day of experiencing the Olympics on two different pieces of technology: my television (with DVR) and my computer (with live streaming). I made sure my computer was going to be able to broadcast the streaming video (as long as your cable subscription gets MSNBC and CNBC, it’s all good), and I was all set to go!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">My day, as a result, was a giant blob of Olympics. I watched cycling, fencing, tennis, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, badminton, table tennis, swimming, volleyball, boxing, gymnastics, rowing, and beach volleyball! *phew!*</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Unfortunately, my computer was purchased way back in 2009, so it’s a little older. It’s probably a little dirty on the inside with random viruses that Avast! cannot find or kill. So as I was watching the live streaming of the men’s 400 IM, right before the finish, my computer froze, meaning I didn’t get to <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">see</i> the finish. Fortunately the results were already clear by the time it froze up – Lochte was gonna win by a huge margin and Phelps was going to miss out on a medal – but it was still frustrating. My Adobe Flash player has also crashed, but that seems to be an easier fix. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">I really enjoyed the commentators for the swimming portion, who I believe are Australian. It was a different kind of excitement than Rowdy Gaines provides on the NBC telecast. I thought that maybe we would have the normal commentators on the streamcast, but that is not to be. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">I also wholeheartedly love the replay aspect of the online streaming, where you can queue up previously aired material, just in case something amazing happened that you missed. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">It sounds like, according to NBC’s commercials, they will continue to promote their prime time coverage without telling you the results, even though technically a lot of people are likely to have watched the online streaming of the races. I know I made sure to tune in. You also can’t watch those events that they’re going to highlight in primetime until they’ve actually <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">aired</i> in primetime. I haven’t actually seen any gymnastics yet, since I decided to wait till the evening (it wasn’t a medal day – just qualification). But there will be plenty of time to watch on the computer.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>I just hope my computer can take all the video streaming. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Strange – people are going to stream on their computers to watch things live, but DVR on their televisions to watch things later!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mini Blurbs</b></div><div class="MsoNormal">The women’s basketball match I watched was USA vs. Croatia. When I tuned in, the US was only up by <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">3 points</i> with six minutes to go in the third quarter! I watched the rest of the game, and they did pull away, but it was still a sloppy effort. Good thing their defense kept Croatia to four points in the first quarter and nine points in the fourth.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">I am going to have to dedicate some time to looking up the rules for fencing. That sport is nuts. The athletes are strung up with lights a la Lily from “Modern Family” when she was the flower girl at that wedding. The foil touches a part of the armor and causes one of the athletes to light up. Then one (or both?) of the athletes screams with all their might. I’m surprised that fencers don’t have more vocal problems, what with all the screeching they do. I will do some research and let you know the rules later. By the way, props to the gold medalist today, an Italian, who sang her national anthem with all her might. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Swimmers are being introduced in a way that I’ve seen in past championships. Unlike the early, suit-era years, where all the swimmers came out together and the camera panned down the row when they were introduced, one swimmer is introduced at a time and emerges from the tunnel. In relays, the teams are introduced together. It gave me a chance to admire Italian Luca Marin’s mustache.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Brit tennis player Andy Murray has a brother! Jamie! And they play doubles together! But they lost today. Aw shucks. Better stick to singles, Andy.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Why do table tennis tables look so much smaller in the Olympics than they do in our basements? Is it because there’s about a 10 meter ring of empty space surrounding the Olympic tables, while in our basement it’s wedged between the Christmas tree and the playhouse?</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">DirecTV allows me to customize my “guide” button. The first one I made is channels I normally watch. But I made the second one strictly the Olympics coverage. So today I am on Olympics guide, and when I flip through the channels I am only seeing the channels in the guide. It’s pretty sweet. And a part was replaced on my receiver so I can watch TV in the afternoon and it doesn’t freeze up on me anymore. It helped that it was cloudy today.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Will Michael Phelps continue to be lethargic and lackadaisical? Or is his medal-less 400 IM performance just an indication of things to come? He only needs three more medals – not just gold, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">medals</i> – to be the most decorated Olympian of all time. C’mon, Mike. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">In a 400-m freestyle preliminary, South Korean (and reigning gold medalist) Park Tae-Hwan was disqualified for early entry into the pool. Then he was reinstated. Honestly, that was interesting. But what made it more interesting was NBC host Dan Patrick’s take on the whole situation. His summary: “Park Tae-Hwan is in the final, [Canadian] Ryan Cochrane is out, and Rowdy Gaines is very observant.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>I think Dan Patrick is awesome. Kinda wish he still did <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Sportscenter.</i></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Cycling road races are nuts. I fast forwarded through most of it and it took me a while. Those cyclists are on a bike for six hours! I know the scenery was pretty, but <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">six hours</i>? How in the world do they do multi-day races like the Tour de France? </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">The worst thing that could have happened to men’s gymnastics was China having a bad qualifying competition today. Well, one of their top gymnasts pulled out with an injury, and they were creamed by Great Britain in their subdivision. Now they are probably going to get their act together and really be a force when the team medal competition starts up again on Monday. Never count out China. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Tomorrow we got men’s basketball, women’s gymnastics, and the men’s 4x100m relay in swimming. Remember when the French made that stupid remark and the Americans ended up winning the race? Yea, this is the race. Stay tuned.</div>

I found the fat people

The fat people were grocery shopping this afternoon at my local supermarket. In fact, we looked like we were at a fat people convention. <br /><br />I went straight from the gym to the grocery store (and yes, I was a hot, sweaty and very unattractive mess...more on that later). I don't remember the last time I shopped on a Saturday afternoon. There were a lot of extremely overweight people there today, and my heart broke a little for each and every one of them. I know first-hand how much this hurts, physically and mentally. <br /><br />I'd guess the average BMI was 40+. There were a lot of people that appeared to be 250 to 300 pounds (and they weren't seven feet tall!). I'm a pretty good judge of weight. I'm 213 pounds, 5' 6", and I was probably one of the thinner of the fat people.<br /><br />I really try not to pass judgement on overweight people for buying junk food:  a.) it's none of my business and b.) I've been there. Yet, I couldn't help  myself as I peeked into their grocery baskets. I didn't see anyone even attempting to eat healthy. Mostly processed foods, frozen or canned, and a lot of chips, bakery goods, cookies and candy, and similar unhealthy choices. I wonder how many times someone has looked at my food choices and thought 'oh my goodness, she shouldn't be eating that food...she's already too fat!'.<br /><br />In an odd way, it actually helped me make really healthy choices. First of all, I'd just come from the gym which is the absolute best time for me to shop for food. When I've just worked out really hard and had a great workout, I truly have no desire to eat junk. Today I was thinking maybe that's the only time I should go grocery shopping, after a workout. Then I saw so many people in my situation, struggling with obesity, it just reinforced what I was already feeling about food. Make healthy choices.<br /><br />About the gym<br />I posted a few days ago about how much I dislike my gym, L.A. Fitness. It's filled with young, healthy people. Now, I have nothing against being young or being healthy. I was just having a problem with being the oldest, most unfit person at my gym. The close quarters of the free weights area, filled with young, muscular men, was the most annoying aspect of it. I love working out with free weights, but I was really feeling intimidated by the men.<br /><br />I found a solution! Today I did most of my free weights in the group class area that was empty. It's a huge room, mirrors on three sides, high ceiling and cooler (temperature) than the rest of the gym. Someone had left a set of 15-pound dumbbells and a 25-pound plate weight. Perfect for three of my upper body exercises. Then I used the 8-pound weights for some deltoids exercises, add in three machines for lats and delts, and I had a great weight workout. I was the only person in there, except for one young woman that came in and did some crunches. I checked the class schedule and there aren't any classes in there Monday, Wednesday and Friday until 8:30am. Perfect! <br /><br />Of course, there are some bench free weight exercises I still need to do, so I'll have fight for a bench and deal with the all-guy area (that's how I've come to think of it). I'll manage, and like some of you said, I have just as much to be there as they do.  <br /><br />I also faced the StairMaster today. I've been avoiding it with the logic I'm too fat for the StairMaster. Well, you're never to fat for the StairMaster! I was definitely slower than the guy next to me (yes, he was young and thin), but my average heart rate was 132, and I burned 236 calories in 30 minutes. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, and a lot more "fun" than the elliptical. More of a challenge and you can't cheat.<br /><br />Food has been nearly perfect today. This is the fourth day in a row of eating healthy and exercising. It feels good to be back.

Also on the schedule: Ernst Lubitsch's <i>The Merry Widow </i>(1934), <i>San Francisco </i>(1936) with Clark Gable and <i>Smilin' Through </i>(1941) with Gene Raymond.<br /><br /><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Aug. 28 - Ava Gardner</b><b> </b>is one of very few who qualify as a true “Film Goddess.” She will be featured in pictures from her early days in Hollywood - <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Hitler’s Madman </i>(1943) and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Maisie Goes to Reno </i>(1944) - along with some of her most interesting films – <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Pandora and the Flying Dutchman </i>(1951) and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Seven Days in May</i> (1964) – and the one containing her best performance - <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Night of the</i> <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Iguana (1964)</i>. Also interesting is <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Bribe </i>(1949), a glossy MGM noir. One I haven’t seen and will be recording is <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">My Forbidden Past </i>(1951) with Melvyn Douglas and Robert Mitchum.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /><b>Aug. 29 - Ingrid Bergman</b> - An interesting mix of Ingrid's films this year -  Hitchcock's misfire, <i>Under Capricorn</i> (1949) is followed by the two films she made next with future husband Roberto Rossellini, <i>Stromboli </i>(1950) and <i>Europa '51 </i>(1952). Also, Ingmar Bergman's <i>Autumn Sonata </i>(1978).
