Are Herbal Supplements A Scam? Study Finds Many Contain ‘Contamination … – International Business Times [ BeritaTerkini ]

<p>Researchers in Canada reviewed 44 different herbal supplements, ranging from things like Ginkgo biloba, often thought to treat memory disorders, to St. John’s wort, which purportedly treats mild depression. Using a sophisticated method of DNA barcoding, a technique of genetic “fingerprinting” developed about a decade ago, scientists found that one-third of them were complete substitutions. Many of them simply contained fillers like wheat, rice and soybean.</p> <p>“This suggests that the problems are widespread and that quality control for many companies, whether through ignorance, incompetence or dishonesty, is unacceptable,” David Schardt, a senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a safety and nutrition advocacy group, told The New York Times. “Given these results, it’s hard to recommend any herbal supplements to consumers.”</p> <p>Other herbal supplements were discovered to be adulterated with ingredients not listed on the label. Ginkgo biloba, for instance, contained black walnut, which can be deadly for people with nut allergies. Bottles labeled as St. John’s wort were made of nothing but rice. One bottle even contained Alexandrian senna, a powerful laxative made from an Egyptian yellow shrub.</p> <p>“Most of the herbal products tested were of poor quality, including considerable product substitution, contamination and use of fillers,” researchers concluded in a study published in the journal BMC Medicine. “These activities dilute the effectiveness of otherwise useful remedies, lowering the perceived value of all related products because of a lack of consumer confidence in them.”</p> <p>Product substitution occurred in 30 of 44 of the products tested in the Canadian study and only two of the 12 companies had products without any substitution, contamination or fillers. “Some of the contaminants we found pose serious health risks to consumers,” researchers noted.</p> <p>The herbal supplement industry is a $ 5 billion industry. According to CNN, more than half of U.S> adults take some kind of supplement, including multivitamins, minerals and herbs. The supplement industry as a whole is worth $ 27 billion, and is expected to continue rising as it has since the late 1980s. There are now over 29,000 different products available on the market, Healthy Living noted.</p> <p>And unlike other drug products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate dietary supplements with the same scrutiny it applies elsewhere. Supplement makers do not have to prove that their products are safe or effective; it’s essentially an honor system.</p> <p>“There’s a false perception that supplements fall under the same regulatory umbrella as prescription drugs,” Dr. Orly Avitzur, a medical adviser for Consumer Reports, told CNN in 2011. “That’s not the case.”</p> <p>And part of the problem lies with consumers, as well. Many people assume that if their local pharmacy or health food store carries a particular herbal supplement, it can’t be harmful.</p> <p>“Overall, I would agree that quality control is an issue in the herbal industry,” Stefan Gafner, the chief science officer at the American Botanical Council, told The New York Times. “But I think that what’s represented here is overblown. I don’t think it’s as bad as it looks according to this study.”</p> <p>The method of DNA barcoding researchers used was previously applied to herbal teas. The grid allowed utilities to efficiently provide enough electricity to during periods of maximum demand ("peak load") without wasting large amounts of reserve generating capacity simply to meet this peak for a few hours each day. Two major power grids-the Ontario-New York-New England pool (formally known as the Canada-United States Eastern Interconnection, or CANUSE area) and the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland pool (the PJM interconnection)-together made up the northeast power grid, which provided a flexible network of power suppliers that could quickly meet fluctuating demands within the many parts of North America's most densely populated region. While the grid, which remains intact today, has proven to be highly effective, the night of November 9, 1965 serves as a reminder of how thoroughly our electricity-dependent lifestyles are tightly interwoven with the complex workings of a massive but often overlooked technological system.<br />At 5:27 p.m., November 9, 1965, the entire Northeast area of the United States and large parts of Canada went dark. From Buffalo to the eastern border of New Hampshire and from New York City to Ontario, a massive power outage struck without warning. Trains were stuck between subway stops. People were trapped in elevators. Failed traffic signals stopped traffic dead. And, at the height of the Cold War, many thought Armageddon had arrived. One pilot flying over a darkened New York City stated, "I thought, 'another Pearl Harbor!'" By 5:40 p.m. that evening, 80,000 square miles of the Northeast United States and Ontario, Canada, were without power, leaving 30 million people in the dark.<br />New York City was particularly hit by this blackout, due to its reliance on electricity for nearly all aspects of city life. Office workers, ready for an evening at home with their families in the suburbs, were forced to find alternative lodging, some seeking shelter in their offices or on benches in Grand Central Station. Theaters closed for the night. The "Great White Way," Times Square, usually a glimmering crossroads of light, was covered in darkness. Thousands of travelers stranded in New York were forced to sleep in hotel lobbies, leading the Times to report that the "city's hotels looked like biovac areas." Approximately ten thousand commuters were stuck on subway cars, unable to escape the darkened tunnels. By midnight, the Transit Authority began sending food and coffee to those trapped underground.<br />Despite the confusion and disarray, New Yorkers spent the night in peace. There were no riots or widespread looting. Instead, New Yorkers helped each other. Some directed traffic. Others assisted the New York fire department as they rescued stranded subway passengers. In many cases, New Yorkers just shared extra candles and flashlights with neighbors, reveling in the opportunity to get to know the people who lived across the hall.<br />By 11 o'clock, the power was restored in 75 percent of Brooklyn, and by 2 a.m., the borough was fully equipped with electric power. By midnight, much if the Bronx and Queens were lit. And, at 6:58 a.m., almost fourteen hours after the massive blackout struck New York, power was restored citywide.<br />It took six days to locate the cause. Federal Power Commission investigators found a single faulty relay at the Sir Adam Beck Station no. 2 in Ontario, Canada, which caused a key transmission line to disconnect ("open"). This small failure triggered a sequence of escalating line overloads that quickly raced down the main trunk lines of the grid, separating major generation sources from load centers and weakening the entire system with each subsequent separation. As town after town went dark throughout the northeast, power plants in the New York City area automatically shut themselves off to prevent the surging grid from overloading their turbines. Within a quarter of an hour the entire CANUSE area was down. The crowd, he said, brought it back for him.</p> <p></p> <p>See Where Elton John Ranks on Our 100 Greatest Artists List</p> <p></p> <p>The truth was, the piano pounder’s expert band propped up that voice for him, with percussionist John Mahon hitting the falsetto notes, longtime sidemen Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone lustily belting those famous backup lines (“don’t let the <em>su-u-un</em> . . . “) and a wrecking crew of backup singers, including Tata Vega and Rose Stone (Sly’s sister), doing their best to bring church service to the arena.</p> <p></p> <p>Noting that he opened the venue with a show nine years ago, Sir Elton brought a state-of-the-art stage design, with a mesmerizing high-tech chandelier twinkling overhead. A digital display embedded in the semicircular, cantilevered back half of the stage changed from an image of a gently waving American flag during “Philadelphia Freedom” to somber rows of crosses on the new ode to fallen soldiers, “Oceans Away.”</p> <p></p> <p>John’s new album, <em>The Diving Board</em>, a collection of piano ballads and would-be pop songs too stripped down to be hits, is his second in a row (following his collaboration with Leon Russell) to consciously avoid flourishes aimed at radio. (Roots champion T Bone Burnett produced both albums.) “It’s the most adult record I can make at my age,” John said earlier this year.</p> <p></p> <p>But in a concert aimed straight for the heart of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s majority of fans – he played 28 songs, half of which hit the Top 40 – the handful of new songs he slipped in held up well.  “Voyeur,” in particular, built to the full, lush orchestral sound the singer has made his trademark.</p> <p></p> <p>If he’s content at this point to make intimate records that please himself, Elton John knows better than most which side his bread is buttered on. “It’s an amazing life I lead,” he said before introducing his band. “I love it so much, the connection between both of us.” In that relationship, the “other” is his collective audience, and he loves to love them, and to be loved.</p> <p></p> <p>The show began with the complete first side of <em>Goodbye Yellow Brick Road</em>, from the epic “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” to “Candle in the Wind” and “Bennie and the Jets,” with the latter drawing a huge roar after one chord. On the next song, “Grey Seal,” from the same album, the singer playfully stuck out his tongue as Johnstone hit a hard lick on his Les Paul.</p> <p></p> <p>Two enthusiastic electric cellists, Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, helped bring “Levon” to a serious gallop. The bandleader plucked the players from Croatia, he explained later: “They’re both very cute, I think.”</p> <p></p> <p>Deep cuts and notable wild cards included “Holiday Inn,” from the album <em>Madman Across the Water</em>, written on John’s first tour of the U.S., and “Hey Ahab,” from the Leon Russell album. But it was the biggest hits, of course, that drew the biggest grins.
