Jon regularly adds dishes to family get-togethers, or grills some delicious outdoor fare, or whips up new recipes.<br /><br />This morning he sent a recipe for cooking butternut squash in a humorous email that made me laugh as I read it -- I've <i>never</i> cooked butternut squash -- so asked if I could share it on my blog complete with his commentary. With his permission, here it is for those who like recipes (especially all those homeschool moms out there).<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Jon's Fall Butternut Squash</b></span><br />by Jon Phillips<br /><br /><i>Jon says, "What happens when you decide to buy a butternut squash for no particular reason? Use this for a fall-ish dinner side dish instead of potatoes!"</i> <b> </b><br /><br /><b>You’ll need</b>: 1 butternut squash, olive oil, pumpkin pie spice,* salt and pepper <br /><br /><b>Preparation: </b>First off, getting the skin off of the beast is like whittling the bark off of a log. Thankfully, the bark is not too thick. Using a vegetable peeler, remove the rind. Cut the ends off of the squash, then cut in half both directions. Remove the seeds and the softish stuff around the seeds, then chop into 1” squares.<br /><br />Place the chopped-up squash into a 9x11 baking pan with a little sprinkling of salt and cover tightly. Bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.<br /><br />Heat some olive oil in a skillet and add the baked squash in a single layer. Unless you have a giant skillet, you will have leftover baked squash chunks. No worries, we can deal with those in the morning.<br /><br />After you have the squash sizzling in the olive oil, sprinkle some pumpkin pie spice* on the squash and some salt and pepper (a little cayenne would probably be a good addition). Don’t be too heavy-handed with the pumpkin pie spice ... we are not trying to make a pie here. Cook the chunks until browned and slightly crispy on all sides.<br /><br />Serve with roasted chicken or pork chops or whatever. (This was perfect with leftover roasted chicken from the store.)<br /><br /><i>Jon adds, "Now for the leftover Squash chunks...."</i><br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Jon's Butternut Squash Breakfast Hash Browns</b></span><br /><i>Don’t be scared, this is really good!</i><br /><br /><b>Stuff to have:</b> 1 butternut squash, tart green apple, 1 fresh green chile, onion, bacon, salt, pepper and pumpkin pie spice.<br /><br /><b>Preparation:</b> Cook some bacon until crispy.<br /><br />While the bacon is cooking; dice up some of the squash (1/4” - 3/8” cubes). Dice some onion and one green chile. The ratio should be about 2-to-1 squash to onion. Also dice up a half of a green tart apple. Drain the bacon on paper towel and drain off most of the grease.<br /><br />In the same pan you used for the bacon, saute the onion and chile until soft. Add the diced squash and apple. Add salt and pepper, cook until brown and crispy (it should look like hash browns).<br /><br />Add in 2 slices of crumbled bacon. Serve with eggs. WOW!<br /><br /><b>*Homemade pumpkin pie spice: </b><br />Much better than premixed and you probably already have everything. 4 Tablespoons ground cinnamon, 3 teaspoons ground nutmeg, 3 teaspoons ground ginger, 2 teaspoons allspice, 2 teaspoons ground clove. Backstory & Update

So i've realized that there have been quite a lot of changes since i started this blog about a year ago or whenever it was.  Yeah, I deleted most of it lol.  But i know some of you have been here since the beginning while others have no clue.<br /><br />The big big picture background is that i grew up in NY and I was a wild child.  I had hands-off parents.  I was shipped off for close to two years just before I turned 14.  Upon return, i rarely went home and pretty much had to figure out meals/clothes/sleeping arrangements on my own.  If was trouble to be found, i was in it.  Now i've got eyes and a smile that could get me out of anything and i managed to get through without a criminal record lol.  My husband was raised extremely conservatively in the south, going to church every Sunday and Wednesday, very involved (overbearing) parents hovering over the four kids. Now he's not a prude so don't think that, not in the friggin slightest!  He's extremely set in his ways, i guess you'd say.<br /><br />So put us together and i had to clean up my act so as not to scare him.  I played much more innocent and proper than i was, gosh i still do!  It came out in time to some extent.  Not stories or explanations, he puts his foot down and doesn't want to hear it.  Just one liners like "one time at band camp..." only it's not at band camp.  <br /><br />We've lived together for over 13 years now.  He still doesn't know what's going on inside my head.  I've tried to let him in and he doesn't want to.  As much as it hurts, I have no choice but to respect that.<br /><br />I have needs.  And I assume if you're reading this that you also have needs somewhere along these lines, or at least understand that these needs i have are actual needs.  In my perfect little world, the answer to everything i need is a full time D/s relationship, and a pretty hard core one at that.  It goes so deep as having a need to be micromanaged throughout the day.  I need to be reeled in.  I'd rebel and fight back, i'm sure.  I honestly relish the feeling of being told what to do and i despise having to figure out what to do next.  Then there's the spanko needs.  And the almost violent sex needs.<br /><br />I knew that would be far too much for hubby to stomach, so it had to be toned down.  I stumbled upon DD.  I thought this would be the answer, finally got the nerve to bring it up, and was shot down.  In no uncertain terms will this ever happen.  I think the funny part of that is he did latch onto a few things - though he denied it having anything to do with DD - and that is i have a bedtime and I'm not allowed to say bad words.  Not that he'll do anything about it, but i do get the look of death if i mess up there. Other times he'll randomly pick something that he doesn't like and deal with it "effectively" as he puts it, i call it sarcastic and more mean than anything... but i don't want to discourage him either so i accept his ideas of effectiveness.  And I do admit, even though it leaves me feeling horrible it does work.<br /><br />Our sex drives are severely mismatched right now.  When we met, I could hardly keep up with him.  That was a few times a day, anywhere in the house, middle of the night, middle of the day, inside outside upside down, in the public, in the truck, on the boat, at a party... Never, ever did i tell him no.  Now that I'm mentally at that place, he's more in the 1-3 times a month range.  I'm not allowed to initiate anything, he'll either go stone cold or get away.  So i patiently wait.<br /><br />But when we do, THAT is where a huge change has happened.  He's very take chargey and pushing me and pulling me this way or that and really feeding that fire.  And it's during all that playing that i can get my couple little spanks.  Well, they're not little, he lets me have it but they're individual spanks. So while i like it, it's not coming anywhere close to appeasing that little monster inside me.  And truly, i sorta think that this whole thing is making my fantasies get darker and possibly leaving my needs less met than before.  Like the last couple times I couldn't cum until he had his hands around my neck with all his weight squashing my entire body.  I'm the type who can cum from imagination alone, it doesn't take much... gosh even a sneeze once did it lol<br /><br />So that's where we are as a couple.  Where i am personally, perhaps i'll feel more comfortable sharing that at some point... I guess in a nutshell that i've found somewhat of an outlet or way of comforting some of these needs a bit. (no i'm not sleeping around)

Adapt your program to your new strength gains.<br /> <br /> Consistency is the worst mistake made on the gym floor.<br /> <br /> Consistently doing the same routine or lifting the same figures will lead you to a plateau. In order to build a better body you need to give your body a physical reason to grow. This can only be done by giving it weights which it finds hard to deal with. <br /> <br /> 4. Sleep to grow.<br /> <br /> Muscles are broken down and torn in the gym. They don't start rebuilding until you recover after your workout has ended.<br /> <br /> If you try to get eight to twelve hours of sleep on a consistent basis, it is a guaranteed method to increase your size and strength. That's because the body releases growth hormone and testosterone at this point, so neglecting this phase of the day is not advised.<br /> <br /> This could be compared to leaving the cement to set on a brick wall, but returning the following day and trying to build on it even further. You're basically knocking yourself down all the time and going nowhere. <br /> <br /> If your goal to learn how to build muscle has so far proved fruitless, these tips will help. It is made up of original and reproduced homesteads from the countries that began the immigration to America ... the Old World's England, Ireland, Germany, Africa, and the Irish Forge. In the New World, the American homestead showcases a 1740s log cabin,  1820s and 1850s farm houses, barn, and a one-room school house, and the 1700s Native American village showcases the life of the very earliest Valley inhabitants. <br /><br />Offering summer camps, homeschool days, winter workshops, forums, and special events such as wine festivals, the annual beach party, and Oktoberfest, the museum continues to grow with future plans for the Montgomery Springs village. With its location in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Frontier Culture Museum brings history alive and is a popular day's visit for all ages.<br /><br />To celebrate the silver anniversary milestone, a party was held Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the museum's Cochran Pavilion with invited guests from throughout the surrounding communities of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County. I left my camera in the car so these photos are courtesy of Jack Cameron, a volunteer at the museum, who was there with his wife.<br /><br />Those who attended included elected officials, patrons who have generously provided financial support, volunteers, staff, interpreters, and board members. The pavilion was packed as members of the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra played and guests enjoyed drinks, d'oeuvres, and fellowship with friends and neighbors.<br /><br />A little speechifying is part of such an event, and Executive Director John Avoli was on board to welcome guests and thank everyone for their support. Long-time board member Paul Vames, Chairman of the Trustees and whom I'm proud to serve with on that board, offered remarks that remembered the museum's roots. He thanked those who had the vision, and the ones who helped put that vision in place. It was rounded out with a toast from Tom Sheets who remembered the pioneers who were here before us.<br /><br />At our trustees meeting Friday morning, I asked Mr. Vames if I could reprint his remarks and he graciously shared them. Many thanks to him, and to everyone who helps make the Frontier Culture Museum a jewel in the crown of the Shenandoah Valley.<br /><blockquote><b>Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia</b><br />25th Anniversary Keynote Remarks<br />By Paul Vames, Chairman, Board of Trustees<br /><br />For many years now, the Frontier Culture Museum has focused on its future and on moving forward as an institution. We’ve expanded our exhibits and programs, and worked to bring more school students and general visitors to enjoy this extraordinary Museum that we’ve come together this evening to celebrate. <br /><br />But now we want to pause for just a few moments to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Museum’s official dedication and opening to the public. In doing this, we want to remember that the ceremony that took place on September 9, 1988, represented the culmination of more than a decade of planning, organizing, negotiating, and fund-raising on the part of many people whose imaginations were captured by a vision of what this Museum could be. Sadly, many of the key leaders of that effort have left us over the course of these twenty-five years, and we miss them here this evening. <br /><br />I ask you to remember Eric Montgomery, Governor John Dalton, Lewis McMurran, Justice George Cochran, General Arch Sproul, Dick Robertson and Klaus Wust for their vision and leadership in taking this idea for a museum and making it real. We hope they’re smiling down on us and that they’re pleased with the results of their work.<br /><br />I now want to recognize the contributions of several people who were unable to be with us tonight due to scheduling conflicts and other commitments: Senator John Warner, Governors Chuck Robb, Gerald Baliles, Doug Wilder and George Allen, and Senator Emmett Hanger, and Dr. Henry Glassie.<br /><br />While we regret these excellent people could not be here to celebrate with us this evening, we are blessed and honored to have several of the people with us here tonight who also played vital important roles in bringing the Museum effort to that September day: Lee Cochran, Senator Frank Nolen, Walt Hyer, and Carlton Abbott.<br /><br />Now, I want to recognize a fairly small group of people who have served this institution in official capacities over the years. I will begin with the Presidents of the American Frontier Culture Foundation: General Archibald Sproul, Mrs. Lisa Moore, Mr. John Avoli, Mr. Paul Vames, Mrs. Peggy Sheets, Mrs. Rica Caps, and Mr. John Dod. <br /><br />Next I want to recognize Chairman and one Chairwoman who have presided over the Board of Trustees: the Honorable George M. Cochran, the Honorable Emmett W. Hanger, Jr., Ms. Gail Nardi and Mr. Paul Vames. <br /><br />The next group I will recognize this evening are the people who have served as Executive Director of The Frontier Culture Museum. The first is Mr. Walter Heyer, who was the founding director. Walt was exceeded on an interim bases by Dr. Susan Hanson who was followed by Mr. John Walters, Mr. Gene McCombs served briefly as interim executive director and was succeeded by Ms. Jane McCome who served only briefly. She was succeeded on an interim basis by Mrs. Peggy Sheets, who then passed the office to Mr. John Avoli, who still holds it today. <br /><br />It’s interesting to note that on the day it was dedicated back in 1988 the Museum wasn’t quite finished: the Visitor Center, Museum Store, and Administration Building were still under construction, and only two of the four proposed outdoor exhibits were in place; what were then called the Ulster and Appalachian Farms. It was called the Museum of American Frontier Culture. <br /><br />Much has happened at the Museum since September 9, 1988. Over the following decade the German and English Farms were put in place to complete the original plan for the Museum, and a fifth outdoor exhibit, the Ulster Forge, was added. The next ten years saw the Museum both double in the area dedicated to its outdoor exhibits and in the number of those exhibits.<br /><br />This period has seen the completion of the Hayna Barn on the German Farm, the creation of a new American area of the Museum with the addition of the Bowman House, the relocation of the American Farm to that new area, the construction of the West African Farm, the beginning of the Settler Farm, the reconstruction of the Schuler School House, and the beginning of an American Indian Exhibit.<br /><br />Through all of this the Museum has suffered repeated budget reductions that resulted in some very dramatic staff reductions; but with patience and persistence, and much timely support from the American Frontier Culture Foundation, we have continued to grow and move forward, and we are not planning to stop any time soon. <br /><br />In the weeks ahead the Museum staff will begin the work of documenting, dismantling, restoring, and reconstructing the Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in the American area. In this year’s appropriation we received nearly $200,000 to begin detailed planning for a water powered grist mill. We’ll continue to develop plans for a Crossing Gallery to tie the old world and American areas together, and for an early American village that we have named Montgomery Springs in honor of Eric Montgomery, who had the original idea for this Museum and worked so hard to see it become a reality. <br /><br />Our invitation to you to attend this celebration is our recognition of your contributions to this Museum’s success and is an expression of our gratitude. Some of you helped bring the Museum to that day in 1988 and to see it completed as it was originally planned. Others of you worked and continue to work to expand that original plan and bring the Museum to where it is today and where it will be this time next year and the year after that. <br /><br />The plaques on display here this evening contain names of the hundreds of people and businesses that gave their money and time to build this Museum. They have been on display in the breezeway outside of the Visitor Center for nearly 25 years but we want to call your attention to them tonight and we thank everyone whose name appears on them.<br /><br />It is paramount for nonprofit organizations such as this Museum to succeed to have had great Board Members that have provided time, effort, guidance and have given financial support through the years.<br /><br />We have been very fortunate to have had very capable hard working and committed Board Members both on the Foundation and the Trustees. At this time I would like all past and present Board of Directors of our Foundation and all past and present members of our Board of Trustees to stand and be recognized. Thank you all.<br /><br />Now I want to both recognize and thank our employees, staff and volunteers both past and present. would you please stand. I sincerely believe we would not be having this celebration this evening if it weren’t for your efforts. How to Count Calories

But now, i am far more familiar with them. Maybe too familiar. I should point out that you DO NOT have to count calories to be healthy, it is not a must. Though i counted calories throughout my weight loss, i very rarely count calories now as i feel more comfortable with just opting for healthier options, so don't feel pressured into counting calories at all! Striking railroad Teamsters ordered back to work, no single operators allowed

An Akron, Ohio, district court judge this afternoon ordered striking locomotive engineers and trainmen at the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway back to work. He also ordered the railroad to refrain from allowing supervisors or management to operate trains.<br /><br />The order by Judge John R. Adams ended the strike by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen that began this morning. The walkout stopped virtually all activity by the railroad, which generally runs 45-50 trains a day.<br /><br />BLET President Dennis Pierce said,<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">I hope that the condition imposed by the judge will lead W and LE to recognize the importance of this issue to our members, who now will be returning to work with the assurance that while the matter is under consideration by the court, no further provocative actions may be taken by the carrier.</blockquote>According to a <a href="http://www.ble-t.org/pr/news/newsflash.asp?id=5489" rel="nofollow">BLET statement</a>, the workers walked out because the W and LE repudiated its contracts between locomotive engineers and trainmen. The railroad used supervisors to do the work of the engineers and trainmen, and running one-person operations.<br /><br />A <a href="http://www.ble-t.org/pr/pdf/Temporary-Restraining-Order-9-20-13.pdf" rel="nofollow">temporary restraining order</a> will remain in effect until a hearing can be held on the railroad’s request for a longer-term injunction.<br /><br />Pierce also thanked General Chairman Bob Linsey, Local Chairmen Kevin Nahrebecki and Lonnie Swigert, and all officers and members of Division 292, as well as general counsel Mike Wolly and his team for their outstanding efforts.<br /><br />The BLET is part of the rail conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.<br /><br />

It has a distinctly European feel despite the small-town Americana setting: very much in the unsettling mode of French director George Sluizer’s 1988 chiller, <i>Spoorloos</i>, which he remade five years later with an American cast, as <i>The Vanishing</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Prisoners</i> comes from the capable hands of Québec-born director Denis Villeneuve, whose résumé includes tension-laden dramas such as <i>Maelstrom</i> and <i>Polytechnique</i>, and who garnered an Oscar nomination for 2010’s <i>Incendies</i>. Point being, Villeneuve has a superb sense of atmosphere and a knack for making the most innocent scene feel enshrouded by a blanket of malevolence.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He also has a gift for drawing persuasively authentic performances from his actors, and that’s certainly the case here. While the entire cast is compelling, stars Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal are sensational. Both are gifted actors; both have been fine before. Under Villeneuve’s capable guidance, they’re even better.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The story opens on a cold, overcast Thanksgiving Day in a working-class Pennsylvania suburb: the kind of town where kids set up lemonade stands. The homes and yards are tidy but looking a bit distressed: fading paint and weather-beaten vehicles a testament to folks barely hanging on during the tough economy.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Out in the nearby woods, Keller Dover (Jackman) offers a solemn prayer to God before encouraging teenage son Ralph (Dylan Minnette) to squeeze the trigger and claim his first deer. It’s a clean shot; as they drive the carcass home, Keller — a survivalist by nature — explains that they must be prepared at all times, must be their own strongest advocates, must expect to take charge when others inevitably fail.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Keller collects his wife, Grace (Maria Bello), and their 6-year-old daughter, Anna (Erin Gerasimovich); the family strolls up the street to celebrate the holiday with best friends Franklin and Nancy Birch (Terrence Howard, Viola Davis). Anna and Joy are simply <i>gone</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Police are summoned; the case falls to Loki (Gyllenhaal), a loner detective whom Keller instinctively mistrusts for his youth, his (supposed) inexperience and his failure to have a family of his own, thereby branding him as somebody who Simply Doesn’t Understand. Ralph remembers an odd, dilapidated RV that had seemed out of place when he and Eliza had taken the little girls for a walk earlier.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The vehicle is found; police arrest its driver, a quiet, withdrawn and deeply frightened twentysomething named Alex Jones (Paul Dano). Much as Loki wants this to be The Guy, there’s nothing on which to build a case. The RV contains no physical evidence; more to the point, the developmentally disabled Alex has the mind and social awareness of a child.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And yet ... he was driving the RV. If “society” — in this case, the local police — seems ineffectual or unqualified, is individual action appropriate? How far should it go? Do the stakes justify <i>any</i> approach, no matter how cruel or heinous? And, God forbid, what if you’re wrong?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Villeneuve subsequently cross-cuts between three simultaneous storylines: Keller’s determined effort to wrest Truth from Alex, with the reluctant participation of Franklin; the agonizing, engulfing stasis that smothers the wives and elder children left back in their homes, as every minute stretches into an eternity of self-recrimination; and Loki’s dogged pursuit of stray threads that offer the tantalizing hope of a lead, but inevitably go nowhere.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Still, something’s definitely not right; the vibes are off. Keller has badly misjudged Loki; truth be told, this young detective will move heaven and earth in order to solve this case. Nothing else matters, particularly the dubious glances coming from colleagues and his ineffectual oaf of a precinct captain (Wayne Duvall, everybody’s nightmare bureaucrat come to life).<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pay close attention, because details matter; Guzikowski has orchestrated a wickedly fiendish puzzle. I haven’t seen a thriller this carefully layered, this meticulously crafted — one that builds to a slick payoff that puts all the pieces together — since M. Night Shyamalan’s <i>The Sixth Sense</i>, back in 1999 (when that fellow still knew how to make a good movie).<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Remember how knocked out you were, during that film’s climax? How ingenious you thought it was, at the moment of revelation? Guzikowski delivers the same sort of emotional wallop here.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Jackman unerringly navigates a tremendously difficult role, as Keller’s apparently facile personality — impatience, snap judgment, anger-management issues — yields to an unexpectedly complex and badly damaged soul. Keller sees himself as the ultimate father figure: the provider and protector, the White Knight. When he cannot fulfill that role, his notion of self disintegrates: Jackman’s very being — his commanding aura — seems to wither away, as if the bones supporting his frame are crumbling, turning every motion into a herculean effort.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But the fury never vanishes; if anything, that particular fire sucks an increasingly proportion of Keller’s life force, leaving him less able to think, feel or question the wisdom of his actions. On top of which, Keller never loses his perceptive edge: He may be stubborn and rash, but he’s not stupid.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It’s quite a portrait, and we can’t take our eyes off Jackman. We wince time and again, wondering how Keller can make this already frightful situation even worse.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Gyllenhaal has the quieter, less florid role; Loki is procedure personified, a methodical investigator who believes that slow and steady <i>always</i> wins the race. That said, his need to remain calm, to resist the same vengeful impulse that governs Keller, has taken its toll; Loki’s uncontrollably twitching eyes betray his own bottled-up rage, his fear of impotence. When that fury does erupt — quite memorably, in one unexpected moment — the result is shocking.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Otherwise, Loki is deceptively restrained, Gyllenhaal’s misleading smile a truly dangerous thing. I love Loki’s interviews with persons of interest, either in the station house or out in the world; despite his scruffy, sleepless bearing, Gyllenhaal is almost charming. Until he isn’t.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Dano, with plenty of misfit characters in his past, is perfectly cast as the helpless, overwhelmed Alex. He radiates the frightened vulnerability and fragility of an injured sparrow; Alex simply is no match for the raw ferocity of a man such as Keller, who — in Dano’s terrified expression — looms as a monster from the worst possible nightmare. Terrified, yet also uncomprehending; the Alex/Keller dynamic is like watching a deaf/mute being tortured by a sadist who doesn’t realize that his victim cannot speak.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Or is it all a sham, and is Dano playing us, the way Edward Norton did so memorably, back in 1996’s <i>Primal Fear</i>? Keller certainly thinks as much; if we share that sentiment, do we become complicit in what comes next?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Howard is achingly raw as the conflicted Franklin, who wants no part of Keller’s “plan” but, at the same time, places far too much value on how he measures up in his best friend’s eyes. No matter what Franklin does, as a result, he’ll betray either himself or Keller; the misery of this Hobson’s Choice radiates from Howard’s agonized gaze.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Bello has the most tragic role, because Grace simply shuts down as the catastrophe continues through and beyond the second, third, fourth day. She has bought into her husband’s role as family protector, and cannot cope with his inability to bring their little girl home. Grace’s life force simply drains away.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Davis, alternatively, moves Nancy Birch in unexpected directions, suggesting that even the most civilized individual can be pushed too far. Thanks to the intensity of Davis’ performance, we’re not surprised by any of this.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Villeneuve and editors Joel Cox and Gary Roach tighten the screws with ruthless efficiency; despite clocking in at a generous 153 minutes, the tension never flags. Indeed, the intensity simply mounts, much like the long-form TV thrillers that the British deliver so well.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Prisoners</i> — great title, by the way — is quite a ride. See it quickly, before the many layers of Guzikowski’s deliciously twisty narrative are exposed by Internet spoilers and jerkwad TV personalities.</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"><o:p></o:p></span></div><!--EndFragment-->
