In an interview on <i>Sky News</i>, the racing driver Amanda Stretton and robotics specialist Emma Byrne stated that this innovation could have a profound influence on the future direction of traffic, and seemed broadly sympathetic to it.</p> <p>I wish I could share their enthusiasm. Of course, the improvement of public transport – or indeed, the actual creation of a public transport system, considering the existing ‘public transport’ is all owned privately – would be an excellent thing, I am by no stretch of the imagination attached to the idea of cars as a concept or status symbol. But we should be extremely weary about creating a matrix-like control grid where all vehicles are tracked and everything drives itself.</p> <p>Firstly, before going into the deeper issues, there must surely be questions over safety here. It’s perfectly reasonable to argue that the existing road network is far from safe, and this is naturally completely correct. Thousands of people die on the roads every year, this cannot be contested. But everyone that currently applies for a driving licence and goes out onto the road knows these dangers, or would have to be incredibly ignorant not to be aware of them.</p> <p>The potential for accidents to occur due to computer and mechanisation errors is completely different. We all accept driver error as an in-built risk of driving a vehicle. Would people really accept being put at risk due to errors by artificial intelligence? I’m quite sure that the people proposing this will argue that it’s completely failsafe, no such errors can occur, and no accidents are possible. This is usual sort of rhetoric that we hear in these cases, and it always turns out to be baseless.</p> <p>Perhaps a more important issue though is what this says about the future of our cities and transportation within them. I first encountered the concept of such a transport network in a series of videos by an organisation called ‘Forum for the Future’. Their presentation, ‘Megacities on the Move’ depicted a future which I can only reasonably describe as dystopian and Orwellian. Within one of the videos, the female narrator cheerily talks of her commute, all controlled by computer, as being a case of “switch(ing) off her brain, and going to work”. Not really the vision of a society that I’m overly keen on. There are already EU plans to greatly reduce the amount of traffic in city centres, though, and such technology would doubtless receive a bureaucratic thumbs up.</p> <p>The increasing sophistication and increased usage of technology in our society is absolutely inevitable. Shire to pay $4.2 billion for rare disease firm ViroPharma [ BeritaTerkini ]

<div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Paul Sandle</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>LONDON (Reuters) – London-listed Shire is buying ViroPharma for $ 4.2 billion, attracted by a pipeline of potentially lucrative drugs to treat rare diseases, a growing trend as drugs companies lose revenues from patent expires on conventional treatments.</p> <p>Several companies including France’s Sanofi, according to reports, were interested in ViroPharma, which makes Cinryze for the treatment of immune disorder hereditary angioedema.</p> <p>Treatments for such rare disorders can command huge prices, running into hundreds of thousands of dollars a year per patient.</p> <p>Shire said on Monday it had agreed to pay $ 50 a share in cash for U.S. biopharmaceutical ViroPharma, a 27 percent premium on Friday’s closing price. Shares in the group spiked nearly 30 percent in September on bid speculation.</p> <p>Though some investors have raised concerns about the sustainability of the business model for rare disease drugs, healthcare providers have so far generally accepted the high costs, given the transforming effects of the medicines and the very small number of patients who need them.</p> <p>The value of biological drugs to treat rare disease was crystallized in 2011 when Sanofi paid more than $ 20 billion to buy Genzyme.</p> <p>Rare diseases are already an important part of Shire’s portfolio, including drugs to treat Gaucher’s disease and Fabry disease, and it said buying Exton, Pennsylvania-based ViroPharma would create a $ 2 billion a year unit, accounting for 40 percent of Shire’s total revenue.</p> <p>Shire Chief Executive Flemming Ornskov said the deal was “entirely consistent with our clear strategic objective of strengthening our rare disease portfolio”.</p> <p>Shares in Shire, already at record highs in recent weeks after the group raised 2013 earnings guidance, reached a new peak of 2,899 pence. They were trading up 3.6 percent at 2,898 pence by 0951 GMT. [ID:nL5N0IE2MB]</p> <p>Analyst Savvas Neophytou at Panmure Gordon, who has a “buy” rating on Shire, said the deal was “clearly at an eye-watering multiple” of 7.6 times enterprise value over revenues, but it was strategically very sound.</p> <p>“Given the company’s growth characteristics, a premium valuation is warranted in our view,” he said.</p> <p>NO PRESSURE</p> <p>Ornskov declined to comment on competition to clinch a deal, but he said he was under no pressure and the price agreed was good for both sets of shareholders.</p> <p>He said Cinryze, ViroPharma’s leading product, would complement Shire’s Firazyr on-demand treatment for acute attacks for hereditary angioedema, a rare genetic disease characterized by sudden attacks of swelling of the skin or the mucous membranes, which can be disfiguring, painful and life-threatening in some circumstances.</p> <p>“Hereditary angioedema is a devastating rare disease that affects about 18,000 patients in the U.S. and EU,” he told reporters on Monday.</p> <p>“We will be able to better serve them by long-term prophylactic prevention with Cinryze and on-demand prevention of acute attacks with Firazyr.” Firazyr is one of Shire’s fastest growing drugs.</p> <p>Shire, whose biggest selling drug is hyperactivity blockbuster Vyvanse, has largely grown by buying up promising companies and licensing drugs rather than building its portfolio from first-stage research.</p> <p>Ornskov said mergers and acquisition and in-licensing was in Shire’s DNA: “Our focus on this does not stop as a result of today’s transaction.”</p> <p>ViroPharma is forecast to have annual revenues this year of $ 445-465 million, up from $ 428 million in 2012. The bulk of revenues this year, some $ 395-405 million, is expected to come from Cinryze sales in the United States. Well it does when you’re looking at renders this good. Thanks to Marti Hajek & Steve Hemmerstoffer for this hyper realistic look at what could be in Apple’s future.</p> <p>One of the great things about these renders it that they aren’t too far fetched. They’ve taken what Apple has done in the past and applied it to the next step. Namely it’s thinner, has less bezel, and does away with yet another button. When we say it like that it almost sounds like the renders would be easy – but to create them at this quality we’ve got nothing but respect for these guys.</p> <p>While the form of the handset is the same as the iPhone 5S the screen would be a little larger as it’s grown as the bezel has shrunk. A bit like Samsung did with the Galaxy S3 to Galaxy S4 jump. And in another Android inspired move the home button has also been removed. Presumably Apple would need to introduce some sort of swipe system to replace this. While it looks great and we’d love to see it we can’t imagine Apple doing it soon after investing a lot in its Touch ID scanner just recently.</p> <p>So what do you think? It’s not a huge leap forward but we’ve come to expect that from Apple of late. It is beautiful though, something Apple does well. Novartis sells blood transfusion test unit to Grifols for $1.7 billion [ BeritaTerkini ]

<div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Silke Koltrowitz and Sarah White</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>ZURICH/MADRID (Reuters) – Switzerland’s Novartis has agreed to sell its blood transfusion testing unit to Spain’s Grifols for $ 1.68 billion, in an increasingly buoyant market for healthcare deals.</p> <p>The sale comes as Novartis carries out a wider review of operations under new chairman Joerg Reinhardt, who has defended the firm’s diversified nature but stressed he would only hang on to businesses that are among world leaders.</p> <p>Novartis Chief Executive Joe Jimenez said on Monday he had started the strategic review of Novartis’s businesses – including the blood unit which carries out tests to ensure blood transfusions do not contain infections – in the spring and the matter had gone to the board over the summer.</p> <p>He said other potential sell-offs were possible as Novartis examines whether three sub-scale businesses – vaccines and diagnostics, over-the-counter (OTC) products and animal health – have a long-term future in the group.</p> <p>“We need to have global scale in these businesses and right now we’re in that process of gaining scale or considering other options for these businesses,” he said in an interview.</p> <p>Asked whether Novartis might sell the animal health and OTC businesses, he said: “I wouldn’t want to speculate on the outcome. Our objective is to determine what it would take to gain global scale. If that is not possible, (selling) would be a potential outcome.</p> <p>Novartis has three core businesses where it is either market leader or number two in various segments – pharmaceuticals, eyecare and generic medicines.</p> <p>Investors are hoping the company will give more detail on how it plans to allocate capital between its different businesses at an investor day on November 22.</p> <p>Global drugmakers have stepped up the pace of restructuring amid investor demands for management to return more capital to shareholders and unlock value trapped inside large firms.</p> <p>THREE TIMES SALES MULTIPLE</p> <p>The deal with Grifols gives Novartis a good price for the blood transfusion diagnostics unit, which was acquired in 2006 as part of Chiron and which had net sales in 2012 of around $ 565 million.</p> <p>Novartis is keeping other diagnostics that are closely linked to its pharmaceuticals pipeline.</p> <p>Vontobel analyst Andrew Weiss said the transfusion diagnostics business was one with no synergies to the remainder of the Novartis group and the price of three times sales seemed “fair” and in line with valuations in the sector.</p> <p>For Grifols, the world’s third-largest blood products maker, the acquisition means diagnostics will now make up 20 percent of its revenue, up from 4 percent now, and that annual turnover in the business will grow to around $ 1 billion.</p> <p>“The acquisition of Novartis’ diagnostic business is a step further into our vision to become a world leader also in the diagnostics field. Anti Gun Mommies Get "Ambushed" At Their Meeting

Four ladies who are members of MDA (Mom's Demand Action) went to a restaurant in Texas to hold a meeting and were caught flat footed by forty gun enthusiasts who showed up to protest <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/11/10/2921121/dallas-gun-advocates-protest-restaurant-gun-control-advocates/">and sat in the parking lot for two hours with their guns</a>, waiting for them to come out.<br /><br /><blockquote>On Saturday, nearly 40 armed men, women, and children waited outside a Dallas, Texas area restaurant to protest a membership meeting for the state chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a gun safety advocacy group formed in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.<br /><br />According to a spokeswoman for Moms Demand Action (MDA), the moms were inside the Blue Mesa Grill when members of Open Carry Texas (OCT) — an open carry advocacy group — “pull[ed] up in the parking lot and start[ed] getting guns out of their trunks.” The group then waited in the parking lot for the four MDA members to come out. The spokeswoman said that the restaurant manager did not want to call 911, for fear of “inciting a riot” and waited for the gun advocates to leave.
