However, one of the biggest questions surrounding this training method is quite difficult to find an honest answer to - can you build lean muscle with it or is it reserved for fat loss workouts?<br />  <br />  The old approach, of course, is to do a resistance session and then jump on a bike for some light cardiovascular work to get yourself into the so-called 'fat burning zone'. []<br />  <br />  If you are trying to gain size you can get fooled into believing you only need to work hard on the weights, or that cardio work is dull and boring. However, recent studies show that muscle gains were massively increased thanks to the incorporation of HIIT into weekly resistance workouts in place of dull, regular cardiovascular activity.<br />  <br />  You read that correctly - performing a HIIT workout has been proven by modern science to burn off more calories and promote more lean muscle growth than regular, steady state cardio. If you find the prospect of an hour on the bike to be pretty dull, then this discovery should really appeal to you.<br />  <br />  It would be foolish to jump straight in, of course, without taking a few minutes to learn some of the basic principles which HIIT operates around. People often buy into opinions in the fitness world, rather than stone cold facts. They follow the advice of their friend purely because he's in shape, despite the fact that the advice offered little or zero scientific support. This is why so many people don't get results in the gym. For instance, most people do their cardio work after they hit the weights. Based on recent studies, not only should you be doing HIIT you should also be doing it before you hit the weights.<br />  <br />  The fascinating study which discovered this was completed by Dr. Peter Lemon back in 2001 thanks to a fascinating Canadian project. This study was then grossly under-reported in fitness circles, causing it to go unnoticed by the general public. In theory, it should alter the way almost everybody trains in the gym.<br />  <br />  Of course, it is also important to discuss the increased difficulty which will be served up by a HIIT workout in comparison to regular, steady state endurance exercise. You won't be able to do this every day of the week, particularly if you are also doing resistance training. That's actually a good though, though, as it will allow your body to recuperate fully.<br />  <br />  While regular cardiovascular exercise is good for your heart and certainly still has it's value, high intensity interval training is superior for both fat loss and lean muscle gains. Low-wage employees and those out-of-work in Milwaukee stormed the local chamber of commerce last week to protest that more than a third of the city's workforce are making poverty-level wages even when employed year-round.<br /><br /><a href="http://expressmilwaukee.com/article-21402-low-wage-workers-tell-mmac:-%E2%80%98we-need-a-raise%E2%80%99.html">About 50 people</a> took over the offices of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce (MMAC) to demand that the city's businesses increase wages so workers can be lifted out of poverty. An estimated 100,000 full-time workers in Milwaukee currently don't make enough to make ends meet, according to a recent <a href="http://www.cows.org/_data/documents/ex_1491.pdf">report</a>.<br /><br />Katina Carter from Raise Up Milwaukee said the report by the Center on Wisconsin Strategy (COWS) is evidence that while jobs paying poverty wages are booming in the city, MMAC is doing little to help improve the lives of workers:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Economic recovery has not happened under the current direction of the MMAC and will continue to fail unless the leaders, the members of the chamber of commerce, face reality and accept the evidence you have in your hand that it’s time to implement real regulations in the best interests of the people, the workers.</blockquote>The COWS report, released in late June, showed that 35 percent of Milwaukee employees earned poverty-level wages last year. The document states it takes a salary of $11.19 per hour to cover the bare necessities for a family of four in the city. The increase in poverty has resulted from manufacturing jobs being replaced with service-industry employment:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">As better jobs in manufacturing have gone away, poverty-wage jobs have expanded. Increasingly workers do not make enough to cover their basic expenses, cannot rely on the hours they need to get by, cannot afford or qualify for health insurance, cannot afford even to ride the bus to get to work.</blockquote>DeAngelo Coleman, a Pizza Hut employee who earns $7.75 an hour, said it is not right that big businesses gets rich while paying their workers so little:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">I'm sure if they could pay me less they would pay me less.</blockquote>

Allegations that the U.S. government spied on several European governments is putting a cramp in efforts to kick off negotiations of the Trans-Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA). Some EU officials have suggested that talks set to begin next week in Washington be postponed. That's good news for workers.<br /><br />The French government<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/new-threat-to-us-eu-trade-talks/2013/07/03/b014a68a-e3d8-11e2-bffd-37a36ddab820_story.html"> is calling</a> for a two-week delay in TAFTA discussions, while a German official suggested that citizens with privacy concerns should steer clear of U.S. Internet companies Google and Facebook. Their comments come after former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden accused the American government of intercepting communications with some EU diplomats.<br /><br />For anyone concerned about the U.S. middle class and consumer safety, the postponement of talks would be a welcome respite. Those involved with TAFTA have done their best to keep discussion of the trade pact under wraps, much like what has been done for the Trans-Pacific Partnership. But some details have emerged.<br /><br />A recent Public Citizen <a href="http://citizen.typepad.com/eyesontrade/2013/07/will-the-trans-atlantic-spying-scandal-kill-the-trans-atlantic-trade-scandal.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+eyesontrade+%28Eyes+on+Trade%29">blog</a>, for instance, exposes that U.S. and European corporations want to use TAFTA to water down necessary agriculture, communications, energy production and financial safeguards. That has drawn criticism from consumer, environmental, health, farmer, labor and tech groups in both the EU and here:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">The NSA’s overreaching national security agenda has jeopardized their overreaching corporate agenda to use TAFTA to roll back financial, climate and food safety standards that make doing business less convenient.  If the two agendas would cancel each other out, perhaps we could get on with an agenda that’s actually supported by the public – from environmental stability to public health to personal privacy. </blockquote>The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), meanwhile, announced it obtained a set of EU position papers that summarize some of their initial regulatory goals within the automobile sector, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and competition policy, as well as a proposed chapter on trade and sustainable development. While there are some relevant points, the <a href="http://www.iatp.org/blog/201307/trade-secrets-">IATP notes</a> they can't be considered in a vacuum:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Consistent multilateral rules on difficult issues make sense, but let’s make sure trade is put in its place. Rules that provide for a safe workplace, protect public health and the environment, and promote energy and food security have been lost in trade agreements of the past. Beginning tonight and on the 12<sup>th</sup>, 19<sup>th</sup> and 26<sup>th</sup>, Turner Classic Movies will feature hour after hour of the films of one of the pioneers and masters of the French New Wave, Francois Truffaut (1932 – 1984). Film Critic <span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">David Edelstein</span> of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">New York Magazine</i> and NPR’s <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Fresh Air</i>, hosts the series.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /><a name='more'></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Coincidentally, I’ve been catching up with and revisiting Truffaut on my own lately. It started when I was putting together a birthday tribute to the French actress <a href="http://eves-reel-life.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-birthday-tribute-to-francoise-dorleac.html"><span style="color: #990000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Francois Dorleac</b></span></a> in March. Dorleac worked with several legendary European filmmakers in her brief but notable career – Philippe de Broca, Jacques Demy, Roman Polanski, Ken Russell - and Truffaut. I'd seen Polanski's <i>C</i><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">ul-de-sac</i> (1966), Demy's <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Young Girls of Rochefort</i> (1967), and set out to find de Broca's <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">That Man from Rio</i> (1964), Russell's <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Billion Dollar Brain </i>(1967) and Truffaut's <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Soft Skin</i> (1964). When it screened at Cannes in 1964, the crowd booed and, in its time, the film was generally dismissed as conventional and disappointing. Following as it did on the heels of his innovative and much-admired earlier works<i> - </i><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The 400 Blows </i>(1959), <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Shoot the Piano Player </i>(1960) and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Jules and Jim </i>(1962) - <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Soft Skin</i> was derided by some as Truffaut’s bid for mainstream acceptance. Stuffy New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther, who famously fell badly out of step with the times in the ‘60s, called it “a curiously crude and hackneyed drama.” However, as so often happens, with the passage of years came reassessment and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Soft Skin</i>, though still relatively obscure among Truffaut’s films, has gained a reputation among film buffs as one of his stronger efforts. All but <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Fahrenheit 451 </i>will be screened on TCM this month.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">In June, when it aired as part of another TCM Friday Night Spotlight series, I recorded <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Shoot the Piano Player</i>, Truffaut’s inventive and completely charming New Wave classic. Unpredictable, by turns comic and tragic, its special charms are accentuated by a charismatic and perfectly cast star, Charles Aznavour, and Delerue’s infectious,  jazzy score. I found it irresistible and watched it twice in a sitting.
