The phone is now available for $199 exclusively on AT&T and we had some time to spend with the unit, comparing it directly to the standard model Galaxy S4. The biggest difference between the regular Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 Active is that the Active is water and dust resistant and can be submerged in up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. You can even listen to music with it while swimming. Similar Guts, Better Exterior The spec differences between the Galaxy S4 Active and the standard Galaxy S4 (which I dubbed the best Android phone ever) are minute. Rather than the S4's Super AMOLED screen, the Galaxy S4 Active uses a regular LCD screen. The resolution is still the same at 1920 x 1080, however. The other internal change is that the camera is 8-megapixel rather than 13. The 8-megapixel camera does have a special aqua mode, however, for underwater photography. The battery, processor and RAM are all the same in the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 Active. A bigger difference, however, is in the phone's exterior. The Galaxy S4 Active is slightly thicker (it's very hard to tell the difference) and as a result feels more substantial in the hand. The polycarbonate shell around the phone and its back also feels more substantial, eschewing the feather-light and plasticky feel of the S3 and S4. The two phones are so similar, its enough to make us wonder why Samsung didn't just consider making at least some of these features standard on the regular Galaxy S4. Maybe it wouldn't be necessary to make the phone submergible in a meter of water, but having it work in the rain would be great. The Galaxy S4 Active is an AT&T exclusive in the United States and will be coming to other parts of the world later this summer.

The University of Michigan is no stranger to the World Solar Challenge, a 1,800-mile, weeklong endurance race held each October across Australia since 2005. The team has placed in third five times over the years (among 28 worldwide participants), but with a recent change to the challenge's rules — vehicles now require four requires instead of three — the University of Michigan is hoping its new creation, the Generation, will finally make it to the top. The car, which measures at about 177 inches long and 43 inches tall, weighs in at about 500 pounds when the driver is in place. "We probably won't see a solar car on the market anytime soon, but a lot of the technologies that we use are being incorporated into vehicles right now such as composites and lithium-ion batteries," Hausman said. "This design is different because it is our first asymmetrical car," Hausman said. "The driver is now positioned on the left side of the vehicle instead of in the center. Due to the addition of the forth wheel, it may not be faster, but our goal was to reduce the impact of the additional wheel as much as possible." The lopsided design of the newly-redesigned Generation aims to boost efficiency on the road. The new rules mandate that the wheels can't be next to each other, as they are on traditional cars. Otherwise, the driver's seat would hang lower than the surface and mess up the car's speed.

One apparently isn't enough so on top of the Galaxy S4 Mini and the Galaxy S4 Zoom is the Galaxy S4 Active. Read our hands-on review to find out what it's all about. There's a lot about the Galaxy S4 Active which is identical to the flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone. It's got the same 5in Full HD screen but with a less impressive TFT panel rather than SuperAMOLED, 1.9GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Software is also the same with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with features like Air View and Smart Pause. Specially designed ports and flaps keep the dust and water out, and although we haven't dunked the Active in water ourselves we can confirm via a demonstration on stage at Samsung's launch event that the phone didn't break. It is 9.1mm and 153g which isn't bad though. We like the rugged look of the Galaxy S4 Active and despite the large stylish visible screws on the back, the rear cover can still be removed to access the SIM card, microSD card and battery. As you can see, there are three physical buttons below the screen instead of the usual one. When submerged in the wet stuff, the Galaxy S4 Active's screen can't be used. However, an Aqua Mode means you can use the volume buttons to take snaps and photos are optimised for underwater conditions. We'd rather have a dedicated camera button, but it's not the end of the world.

Helicopters and close to 10,000 soldiers have been deployed to rescue tourists and pilgrims stranded after floods caused by torrential monsoon rains hit the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand at the weekend. More than 22,400 people have so far been rescued, as the military takes advantage of clearer weather, but another 62,000 are still stranded, the Home Ministry said in a statement. Houses, buildings and vehicles have collapsed or been swept away by overflowing rivers and landslides, while bridges and narrow roads leading to pilgrimage towns have also been destroyed, officials said. Torrential rains four and a half times as heavy as usual have hit Uttarakhand, known as the “Land of the Gods”, where Hindu shrines and temples built high in the mountains attract many pilgrims. At least 138 people have been killed across Uttarakhand and two neighbouring states also hit by floods and landslides, officials said, but shrine authorities warned the toll was more than 1,000. “We estimate more than 1,000 people have died as unattended bodies are scattered all around,” said Ganesh Godiyal, chairman of a trust in charge of several shrines in the pilgrimage towns of Kedarnath and Badrinath. Over the border in Nepal, floods and landslides also triggered by the monsoon have left at least 39 people dead mostly in remote parts of the country, officials said. The military operation was concentrating on reaching the worst-hit Kedarnath temple area, as families of the missing faced an anxious wait in Uttarakhand capital's Dehradun. One of those stranded was Indian cricket star Harbhajan Singh, who was attempting to reach a Sikh pilgrimage site but had to take refuge in a police station. “Some people are saying that we're stuck but I wouldn't say that we're stuck, I'd say we've been saved by God,” said the spin bowler, who was later flown out of the flood-hit area by military chopper. Indian paramilitary officers have been building rope and log bridges across raging rivers to try to reach those stranded. Relief camps have been set up to house evacuated residents and tourists. Some 22 helicopters are ferrying many of those rescued to the camps, while 14 tonnes of food and relief aid has been dropped in remote areas, the air force and the government said. The monsoon, which covers the subcontinent from June to September, usually brings some flooding.

People with knowledge of the plans said Redmond held talks with retailers as well as other tech companies about all sorts of ideas like a unified shopping cart and broad shipping options but ultimately, the plans fizzled. The incubation, as a Microsoft spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal, was called Project Brazil – no doubt a reference to Amazon. Microsoft was even planning to subsidize the cost of goods using advertising dollars from Bing. We are told the service would have been integrated into future versions of Windows as well as on tablets and eventually, other devices like the Xbox One. It’s unclear exactly when or why Microsoft pulled the plug on Project Brazil. While it might have been a good idea for customers looking to save a few bucks, it probably wasn’t in Microsoft’s best interest to move forward with the project. Considering that Microsoft accounted for less than four percent of all search ad revenue in 2012, subsidizing the price of goods might not have worked out so well.

Redmond will pay up to $100,000 as part of what they are calling a Mitigation Bypass Bounty dealing with Windows 8.1 Preview. The bounty notes they are looking for truly novel exploitation techniques against protections built into the upcoming software update. Microsoft said learning about new exploitation techniques earlier helps them improve security by leaps instead of simply handling them one at a time as they crop up after the fact. A separate program called BlueHat Bonus for Defense will award up to $50,000 for defensive ideas that accompany a qualifying Mitigation Bypass submission. Naturally this program will work in conjunction with the above mentioned bounty and could be a way for individuals to earn even more money from their work. Finally, Microsoft is offering up to $11,000 for critical vulnerabilities that affect Internet Explorer 11 Preview in Windows 8.1 Preview. All three bounties will launch on June 26, 2013, we’re told. The timeframe for the Mitigation Bypass Bounty and the BlueHat Bonus for Defense bounty is listed as ongoing while the Internet Explorer 11 bounty will only be active during the first 30 days of the beta period (from June 26 through July 26).

Needless to say, future APIs that fall under this badge will not be accompanied by full documentation or support, but it will be targeted to those niche developers who prefer to play around with some features found on Sony devices. The API will let the illumination bar change its color, the frequency of pulses, and indulge in some pre-defined fading patterns. As for the compatible handsets that support the Illumination bar API fully, they are the Xperia SP, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia UL, and Xperia A.

Huawei, Sony and LG too, have revealed that they have plans to come up with a Firefox OS phone of their own, too.

Oppo’s apparent flagship Android-powered smartphone is known as the Oppo Find 7, where it will continue from where the Oppo 5 left off. No prizes for guessing what the logical name for the Find 7’s successor would be when the time comes, I suppose, as Find 9 would be deemed to be the next best thing. Still, the rumored hardware specifications of the Oppo Find 7 have surfaced, where talk of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset have hit the Internet, where it will be accompanied by a 5” 1080p Full HD touchscreen display, an 8-megapixel shooter in front with a 13-megapixel camera at the back, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory, NFC support, and a massive 4,000mAh battery which would surely raise eyebrows – not to mention increase the thickness of its chassis. The Oppo Find 7 is said to hit the markets sometime in the middle of September onwards, so stay tuned.

A day after their announcement, we received an invitation to a press event taking place on August 7. Coincidence? We think not. The invitation sent to us says LG will host an international media event on August 7 in New York City, but as you’d expect, doesn’t disclose what exactly the company will be unveiling at the show. Considering LG’s recent announcement of using Snapdragon 800 chips, we think it’s safe to say the company has a new, more powerful Optimus G in the works. We’ve already marked our calendars for August 7, which may seem like a long time from now. Seeing as summer has officially kicked off today, we’re sure after attending a number of barbecues and trips to your local amusement park, the date will be upon us and we’ll finally learn what LG has up its sleeve. Now it looks like manufacturer Foxconn wants a piece of that action too and has reportedly hired 3,000 software engineers where they are expected to be experts in HTML5 and cloud computing. While Foxconn has been primarily known in the past to be the manufacturer for Apple’s iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, it seems that recently the company has been looking for alternative ways to making money, ultimately reducing their reliance on Apple and we guess the Firefox OS could be one way to do that. We’re not sure what Foxconn has planned with their software engineers – either design software for Foxconn’s own branded phone, or maybe create software in which they can then sell to other brands instead! Either way we’ll have to wait and see, but what do you guys think? Is the Firefox OS going to be the next big thing, or is iOS and Android too dominant at the moment?

The launch date window was published on Australian carrier Telstra’s website, which said the HTC One on its network would be receiving Android 4.2.2 as early as July 22. The update will most likely be available for the unlocked version of the HTC One first before it’s pushed out to carrier,s with Telstra not even receiving the update from HTC yet as they need to further test it before it’s made available. Unfortunately, there’s no official word as to when Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean will be made available on U.S. carriers, but today’s news may hint at what’s to come. Working together, they have created a pair of gloves that allows users to answer calls simply by mimicking the phone call sign as pictured above. Essentially the microphone for the phone is placed in the pinky, while the speaker is placed into the thumb area of the glove. While it might seem somewhat sophisticated, they are actually a little less hi-tech than one might think. Sean Miles has basically taken regular gloves and recycled mobile phones to create his piece of wearable technology. This project was actually done to raise awareness of how much waste we are creating by not recycling our gadgets. According to Miles, “I hope that my Talk to the Hand project will get people to think again about the waste created by not recycling gadgets. While these might not be for everyone, there are hundreds of other uses that old phones can be put to – from being reconditioned and used again to being mined for their components.”
