Getting Fit While Avoiding The Gym

Nowadays, most gyms have a variety exercise equipment making them a very attractive option for your fitness needs. For a number of people, however, getting a gym membership is expensive or is not a good option due to their inflexible schedule. If this is how it is for you or you wish to be able to add to what you can do in the gym, there are surely many ways you can get fit from home. This article will discuss a number of ways you can integrate exercise into your daily routine.<br /> <br /> No matter where you live, running is a quit way to get fit. Other than buying a good pair of running shoes so you don't hurt yourself, you won't need to spend any more money. No matter where you go, you see folks from all walks of life out jogging, so why not join them? First off, set several goals in terms of distance and times, so that you can measure the progress you are making and give yourself something to aim for. Try to run in various places to keep your running routine more interesting. If you would like others with you, then you can always buddy up with a friend or join a local runners group.<br /> <br /> One of the major benefits of being a gym member is being able to use their equipment for weight training. Don't let this keep you from your doing strength training since there are numerous things you can do at home. If you have space at home and the money, try investing in a multi gym that you can use in your own house. Still, this is not a requirement to get started since a simple set of weights can give you a great deal of flexibility with the type of workouts you can do. Check out your local bookstore or library for more information if you are in need of assistance.<br /> <br /> A major trend now is to learn how to exercise online using ebooks and videos you can view on your laptop. Numerous professional trainers offer their techniques on the Internet so you feel as if you're actually inside a top quality gym. It's similar to having a personal trainer around without spending a lot. Workout videos and DVDs have been around for a long time, but today numerous men and women are using their game consoles to get fit. Many families are using the Wii Fit game to become fit while having loads of fun together simultaneously. At first they were told they had to have an appointment to talk with managers. Eventually discussions led to an agreement.<br /><br />Shortly after the drivers announced that they would return to work, hundreds of their supporters rallied in front of Green Fleet’s headquarters in Carson, Calif.<br /><br />The short, sudden port truck driver strike will be followed by more job actions by low-wage workers around the country. Today’s strike was a big step forward for port drivers and workers everywhere.<br /><br />Though low-wage retail and fast-food workers have captured the nation’s attention, port drivers, too, are forced to work under deplorable conditions and for low wages. This series focuses on how well (or not) our society has met the 50-year-old demands of the marchers. So far, we’ve discussed <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/minimum-wage-lower-today.html">the decline of the minimum wages</a>, <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/port-drivers-regressed-since-1963.html">gaps in labor law protections</a>, and the <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/march-on-washington-jobs.html">underwhelming federal focus on job training programs</a></i>.<br /><br />For civil rights leaders, the importance of a good education for all children could not be understated.<br /><br />At the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, marchers demanded the desegregation of all school districts by the end of the year.<br /><br />Although a significant amount of progress has been made towards the 1963 goal of equal education for all, African-American and Latino students still do not have the same access to quality schools as other students.<br /><br />In 1963, entire states, like Alabama, still maintained separate schools for black and white students, though Brown v. Board of Education had officially struck down segregation in schools nine years before,<br /><br />Today, although segregated schools are illegal, many students still attend primary and secondary schools that are functionally segregated.<br /><br />80 percent of Latino students and 74 percent of black students attend schools where over half of the students are a minority. <a href="http://civilrightsproject.ucla.edu/research/k-12-education/integration-and-diversity/mlk-national/e-pluribus...separation-deepening-double-segregation-for-more-students">Fifteen percent of black students and 14 percent of Latino students</a> attend schools where white students are less than one percent of the population.<br /><br />The average white student goes to a school that is over three-quarters white.<br /><br />Minority students also are more likely to attend schools with high levels of poverty.<br /><br />On average, <a href="http://civilrightsproject.ucla.edu/research/k-12-education/integration-and-diversity/mlk-national/e-pluribus...separation-deepening-double-segregation-for-more-students">black and Latino students go to schools with almost twice as many low-income students in their schools as the typical Asian or white student</a>. In the 1990’s, black and Latino students could expect a third of their classmates to be low-income. Today, that number has doubled.<br /><br />Not only are students at low-income schools less likely to perform well academically, but funding per student is often less than at wealthier schools, since schools are funded by property taxes from local communities.<br /><br />Even funds that are intended to make up the shortfall are often misused to the point that the Department of Education admits that <a href="http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/more-40-low-income-schools-dont-get-fair-share-state-and-local-funds-department-">over 40 percent of low-income schools are shortchanged</a>.<br /><br />A lack of funding further hurts students. <a href="http://www.schottfoundation.org/drupal/docs/schott50statereport-execsummary.pdf">52 percent of African-American males may have graduated high school on time in 2010</a>, but 58 percent of Latino males and 78 percent of non-Latino white males earned their diplomas that same year.<br /><br />In the 2011-12 school year, 12 white students graduated for every dropout. Among African-American students, <a href="http://www.pewhispanic.org/files/2013/05/PHC_college_enrollment_2013-05.pdf">the ratio was 4 graduates per dropout</a>.<br /><br />With 63 percent of black high school graduates enrolling in 2012, <a href="http://www.pewhispanic.org/files/2013/05/PHC_college_enrollment_2013-05.pdf">African-Americans are still the least likely to head straight to college</a> over Latino graduates (at 69 percent), white graduates (at 67 percent) and Asian students (at 84 percent).<br /><br />Even college choice is somewhat segregated. A <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/17/stanford-study-finds-blac_n_1681136.html">study from Stanford University's Center for Education Policy Analysis</a> says that:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Researchers found that as recently as 2004, white students were five times as likely as black students to enroll in a highly selective college, and two to three times as likely to gain admission -- even after accounting for income differences between black and white families. White students were also three times as likely as Hispanic students to enroll in a selective college.</blockquote><a href="http://www.highereducation.org/reports/pa_at/">Black and Latino students are significantly more likely to go to local community colleges than their white counterparts</a>. Although the public two-year colleges are more affordable, they have significantly lower graduation rates than their 4 year counterparts and, due to budget cuts, are increasingly expensive to attend.<br /><br />Martin Luther King Jr. <a href="http://www.thekingcenter.org/archive/document/burning-truth-south">wrote in 1960</a> that “the United States Supreme Court decision of l954 (…) brought hope to millions of disinherited Negroes.... But the implementation of the decision was not to be realized without a sharp and difficult struggle.” Over 50 years later, students are still struggling for equal access. <br /><br />

National support for striking LA port truck drivers as trucks sit idle

Teamsters are hitting the bricks with the striking workers at Green Fleet's headquarters in Carson, Calif., while across the country Port of Savannah drivers who work for Green Fleet delivered a petition to a manager expressing their support.<br /><br />In Commerce, Calif., the BNSF rail yard sent a message to Green Fleet: "Don't send any more trucks."<br /><br />Solidarity!<br /><br />All across America, expressions of support and excitement are coming from Teamster locals, union brothers and sisters, fed-up workers, social justice organizations, employment lawyers and sympathetic members of the public. So he gamely crossed over from the hard sciences to the soft, Gulliver with a notepad and a recorder. When did it all begin? In 1999, an Ohio rheumatologist with a sideline in fossils identified the oldest presumed example of metastatic cancer in a fragment of 150-million-year-old mineralized dinosaur bone. It turns out that the overall estimated rate of bone cancer in dinosaurs is actually quite similar to that identified in at least one random collection of human bones (not much support there for a theory that cosmic rays killed off the dinosaurs in a cancer epidemic).</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">But barring that catastrophe, what made that one poor, limping dinosaur so unlucky? Was it too few lycopene-rich fruits? Too much secondhand forest-fire smoke? It proved to be a metastasis from a malevolent form of uterine cancer, one whose cells are atypically aggressive and prone to spreading. Her situation and her terrible prognosis reminded Mr. Johnson of nothing more than his New Mexico backyard, with headstrong wildflowers blooming where they choose and intractable weeds exploding by night.</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">A man may plan a garden, but nature has different patterns in mind, patterns so intricate and orderly in their chaotic way that scientists now understand cancers to be collections of cells as complex and ambitious as any healthy organ. The extraordinary determination of those cells wins Mr. Johnson's grudging admiration: "Cancer cells are those that rebel against their fate — they hope for so much more."</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">So his story moves between the Santa Fe facilities where Nancy gets her grueling but ultimately successful treatments and the many scientific planes of cancer — from the disregulated events in the cells to the sometimes equally confusing proceedings in hospitals, labs and conference halls, as humans muster their defenses, often feeble but sometimes effective. (Nancy's treatment led to a prolonged, continuing remission of her disease.)</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">It turns out that Mr. Johnson's deceptively casual narrative route is cannily chosen. He wanders everywhere, an intelligent, skeptical, interested and saddened observer with no particular prejudices or axes to grind. He knows how biologic systems work — and, equally important, he is an expert observer of those who observe for a living, and well acquainted with scientific doublespeak. Mr. Johnson finds little in the cancer world to startle him except for the occasional rudeness of some clerical personnel.</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">"No cancer drug is as good as it sounds": this observation elicits neither surprise nor outrage. Instead, it seems to him perfectly logical, now that cancer appears to be not a single disease but thousands, each with its distinct molecular signature. He considers research into carcinogens of edible, breathable and radiant forms, and concludes, "Sometimes it feels like we're chasing our tails, obsessed with finding causes where there may be none."</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">"That is the nature of living in a universe dominated by entropy — the natural tendency for order to give way to disorder," Mr. Johnson elaborates. Some aim for a spiritual moral. Some, like Dr. Mukherjee's, celebrate how far we have come in the struggle against cancer. Others deplore how far we have to go: the recently published "<a title="Book review from Scientific American.
