That's why our brothers and sisters at Local 391 were out today <a href="http://www.digtriad.com/news/photo-gallery.aspx?storyid=296911">supporting the fast-food strikers in Greensboro, N.C</a>.<br /><br />Workers have successfully shut down stories in many parts of the country, <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-rt-us-usa-restaurants-strike-20130828,0,3586222.story">Reuters reports</a>:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">The strikes spread quickly across the country and have shut down restaurants in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Raleigh and Seattle, according to organizers.</blockquote>In Madison, Wisc., almost 60 workers and supporters are outside a Dunkin Donuts chanting "$15 and a union! $7.25 has got to go!" The manufacturer of the BGM-109, more commonly known  as the Tomahawk missile, the weapon of choice of the Obama  administration in any strike against Syria.<br /><br /><span style="color: #cc0000;">Raytheon</span> <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=RTN+Interactive#symbol=rtn;range=20130628,20130828;compare=;indicator=volume;charttype=area;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=off;source=undefined;" style="line-height: 1.5em;" target="_blank">stock has surged</a> over  the past two months, coinciding with the biggest U.S. military build-up  America has mounted since it launched an assault against Libya in 2011.<br /><span style="color: #cc0000;">Raytheon</span> is a Cambridge, Mass.,-based American defense contractor  with total employment of 72,400 people. It is the world’s largest  manufacturer of guided missiles and produces such widely used weapons as  the AIM-7 Sparrow missile, the <a class="kLink" href="http://247wallst.com/special-report/2012/02/28/ten-companies-profiting-most-from-war/2/" id="KonaLink4" style="line-height: 1.5em;" target="_blank">AIM</a>-9  Sidewinder missile and the BGM-109 Tomahawk. The company is also  responsible for the Air Warfare Simulation program used by the Air  Force. According to the <a href="http://247wallst.com/special-report/2012/02/28/ten-companies-profiting-most-from-war/" target="_blank"><i>Wall Street Journal</i></a>, in 2010, the company had nearly $23 billion in arms sales, more than 90% of its total revenue for the year.<br />The Pentagon buys 196 Tomahawk missiles a year, considered the  "minimum sustaining rate" for the U.S. military's arsenal. And there are  some key members of Congress who think more should be spent on these  weapons.<br />“There are many of us who have been concerned for years about  maintaining our missile capabilities,” said Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah), a  member of the House Armed Services Committee, to <i>Politico</i>.<br /><span style="color: #cc0000;">Raytheon</span> has delivered 252 missiles this fiscal year and 361 last  fiscal year. War with Syria means that there would likely be a future  increase in orders for the missiles, which can go for about $1 million a  pop. In the 2011 U.S. military adventure into Libya, 124 Tomahawk  missiles were fired by U.S. and UK ships against Libyan targets. The  Libya campaign would give a comparable bar on how many Tomahawk missiles  will be used in a Syrian campaign.<br /><br /><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b>Supply and demand</b></span><br /><br />The BGM-109 has been used in each of America's official <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomahawk_%28missile%29#United_States_Navy" target="_blank">conflicts</a> in  the last 22 years. Using wings and a flight system, cruise missiles  like the Tomahawk are designed to carry a heavy warhead at subsonic  speeds over a significant distance. Originally developed by General  Dynamics in the 70s, the 3,500 lb. 20 foot long <a href="http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/tomahawk-long-range-cruise-missile/" target="_blank">Tomahawk missile</a> is  now manufactured by Raytheon, a large U.S. defense contractor. Each  unit can cost anywhere from the mid-$500,000s to almost $1.5 million,  depending on the chosen configuration, payload, and booster deployment. From talking to teachers this summer, the main issue for teachers in schools where kids don't use technology is this. THE ONLY TIME KIDS ARE USING TECHNOLOGY is when they are TESTED. That is it. They say their kids don't even know how to scroll down or click. They say the technology is an encumbrance because it is never used except for the test.  For students, the test should be about content not about how the test is administered. To test students online or via computer when they use the computer infrequently is grossly unfair and downright educational malpractice.  Now, I do have a word or two for schools who don't have technology but in their defense, some of them are very short on funds and in uber-restrictive districts and states. But if a state is unfriendly to tech for teaching, it shouldn't be the first thing they run to for assessment.  Students should be tested in a native environment. If their environment is predominantly paper and they aren't fluent on the computer - test time is not the time to learn hard lessons about how to click and scroll.   Don't interpret this to mean that I think we shouldn't all move towards paperless and technology-rich environments - WE SHOULD.   But we must be fair to students - how can they show what they know when they don't know how to use the computer used to administer the test. They make wonderful snacks, too.<br />  <br />  Cardiovascular exercise is the key to losing weight, and running in an outdoor setting like the beach will let you workout while taking in a nice view. Sand isn't as forgiving as grass or pavement, so you get a better workout.<br />  <br />  If you are attending an event or a party, eat a good sized meal before you get there. This will prevent you from cracking when you see the cakes and fattening foods offered at the party. Insist on wine as compared to higher calorie alternatives like beer.<br />  <br />  Avocados are a great alternative to some of the fatty snacks out there. Although they do contain a lot of fat, it is unsaturated fat, which is healthy. The richness they offer makes for a very satisfying experience for anyone steering clear of other types of fat. You could make a vegetarian taco, including lots of salad and avocado, and you would not even notice there is no meat involved.<br />  <br />  As this article told you, it is possible to lose weight if you follow through with it. It would be the one-time wunderkind’s final cinematic gem, a darkest-black comedy titled – perhaps unfortunately – <i>Unfaithfully Yours </i>(1948). The lurid and lingering Landis tragedy would have an impact on the fate of the film. In an attempt to distance it from the scandal, the film’s release date was held up for several months. Additionally, publicity was dialed back - and the marketing campaign changed drastically. It was labeled a murder mystery, it was touted as “six kinds of picture all rolled into one” – confusing and misleading the movie-going public.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Preston Sturges had written a Broadway hit in 1929 and trekked to Hollywood following the play’s adaptation to the screen. He penned several films for Paramount, including <i>Easy Living </i>(1937) and <i>Remember the Night </i>(1940). In 1940 he asked for and was given a chance to direct as well as write. The result was his political sendup, <i>The Great McGinty</i>, a break-out hit that brought Sturges an Oscar for his original screenplay. A string of sly and exhilarating classics written and directed by Preston Sturges followed, namely: <i>The Lady Eve </i>(1941), <i>Sullivan’s Travels </i>(1941), <i>The Palm Beach Story </i>(1942), <i>Hail the Conquering Hero </i>(1944) and <i>The Miracle at Morgan’s Creek </i>(1944). But Paramount had begun to view its genius-in-residence as next-to-impossible to deal with, and relations between the studio and the man soured. When his split from Paramount finally came, Sturges went into partnership with Howard Hughes on California Pictures Corporation for three disastrous years. Sturges and Hughes parted ways in 1947 and the writer/director soon went to work for Darryl F. Zanuck at 20<sup>th</sup> Century Fox. Zanuck was interested in a story Sturges had written years earlier titled <i>Matrix</i>. He is warmly welcomed by his beautiful young and doting wife, Daphne (Linda Darnell). But soon the mischief begins. It seems that before leaving New York, Sir Alfred had asked his rich but dull brother in law (Rudy Vallee) to keep an eye on Daphne while he was away. The brother in law misinterpreted the request and took it upon himself to hire a private detective to monitor her. And now he has come to deliver the detective’s report. Sir Alfred, initially shocked and outraged at the misunderstanding, eventually manages to read the report and works himself into a frenzy of jealousy and suspicion. While conducting a concert after quarreling with his wife, Sir Alfred begins to fantasize about how to handle what he believes is her infidelity. As he conducts three orchestral pieces, he vividly imagines three different possible scenarios – each played out onscreen. The first fantasy involves murder and a frame-up, in the second Sir Alfred is noble and obliging, in the third he falls victim to his own bravado. Sturges was also particularly fond of the fantasy segments. He wrote that he tried to construct the three scenarios envisioned by the conductor “as if written and directed by Sir Alfred, who is neither a writer nor a director.” In his fantasies, the conductor imagines his own behavior “vividly” while the other characters are “marionettelike.” Sturges believed this would be “the natural result of Sir Alfred’s ability to have them say and do <i>exactly </i>what he wants them to say and do.”</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The film’s themes are dark and, perhaps, for the audience of its time, too much so for “six kinds of picture all rolled into one." Its timing in proximity to the leading man's notorious Hollywood scandal was extremely unlucky. For whatever reason or combination of reasons, <i>Unfaithfully Yours </i>was not a success. In his autobiographical notes Sturges reflected, “<i>Unfaithfully Yours</i> received much critical acclaim and lost a fortune.” That the film failed to find an audience contributed to the steep decline of his increasingly precarious career. His interest in women, Mrs. Sturges recalled, was “not subtle at all.” Harrison’s marriage to Lilli Palmer continued until 1957, when the two divorced so that he could marry his lover, actress Kay Kendall, who was dying of leukemia. He married Welsh-born, Oscar-nominated, Tony-winning actress Rachel Roberts in 1962. That marriage ended in divorce many years later and, it is said, she reacted by drinking ever more heavily and by finally taking her own life. I thought him the most accomplished, technically perfect, and totally believable English actor of his time.” Langella managed to meet Harrison twice. Their first meeting occurred in the early ‘70s at a cocktail reception in the older actor’s honor. Langella encountered his idol in the foyer where he was removing his hat and coat. The young actor put out his hand and began to extend a greeting when Harrison flung both his coat and his wife’s over Langella’s arm, as if he was a servant, and made his entrance into the party. The two met again in 1984 when a friend of Langella’s was appearing in <i>Aren’t We All</i> on Broadway with Harrison and Claudette Colbert. Forgoing dinner with his friend and Miss Colbert (who utterly charmed him) in order to try once more to pay his respects to Harrison, Langella found him in his dressing room and finally delivered his heartfelt homage. The old actor heard him out and dismissed him with, “Thank you. Very kind. That power is what makes him God. Well, that is a seriously flawed understanding of God and it makes “the problem of evil” intractable. Feminist theologians call that image of God “patriarchal.” They are not necessarily rejecting the image of God as “father.” “Patriarchal” here means God as dominator, God as autocrat. The patriarchal God is God because he is <i>omnipotent. God’s </i>literal omnipotence is the lynchpin of “the problem of evil” and the erroneous assumption in all the flawed attempts to answer the problem of evil. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">            It is an oddly philosophical and peculiarly Greek notion about God, this “omnipotence” – but it is one of the most widely accepted beliefs about God, even to the extent of understanding that God is God because God is omnipotent, that  “God” means one who is omnipotent.  If you and yours are free of this patriarchal God image, “the problem of evil” is probably not troublesome for you. But because most people assume that divinity equals omnipotence, that patriarchal picture of God persists as the lynchpin of “the problem of evil.”<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">                        Bart Ehrman, in describing why he cannot believe in God, assumes that if God did exist, he would prove it by intervening in the world to impose his will. Even sophisticated theologians are not exempt. Their “doctrine of God” chapters generally show a much richer sense of who God is. But that is not the God who shows up in their “doctrine of evil” chapters. When it comes to this issue, even theologians who should know better lapse into patriarchal assumptions. If you do not share those assumptions at all, then feel free to skip on to the next chapter. But if your image of God is to any degree snared in the prevailing cultural definition of God as dominating power, then we need to clear up a few things. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; tab-stops: .05pt .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">                        First, the very concept of omnipotence is not to be found in Scripture. We have expanded the Biblical description of God as “almighty” into this notion of omnipotence. However, “almighty” in the Bible means “most powerful” – not literally omnipotent. The President of the United States is the “most powerful” political leader in the world, but that does not make him omnipotent in global politics. Omnipotence is not a Hebrew concept. It comes from the Greek philosophical preference for absolute terms. The doctrine of absolute literal omnipotence is not supported by Scripture. In the Bible, things usually do not go God’s way. If things always accorded with God’s will in the Bible, the Divine would be in a better mood and would not have come off as so irritable in the prophets.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">            In addition to being without Scriptural basis, absolute omnipotence does not make sense. I was once teaching a Great Books course to college freshmen who were greatly fond of their subjectivity. They were forever insisting that each of us has our own truth, our own right, our own wrong, and that no one should impose any kind of belief on another. At last the curriculum allowed me to ambush their subjectivity with Euclid. A student went to the board and proved by indubitable logic Euclid’s theorem that parallel lines do not intersect. I questioned the class as to whether this might be true. “Yes” they said, “it is true.” On cross-examination they held that it would be true even if a majority of us should vote that parallels lines henceforth would intersect. They held that no government could change this truth by decree, and that it had always and everywhere been true and would always be so, even in Singapore and Sweden. But when I asked them, “And what if God should decide that parallel lines intersect?” fully half the class insisted that then parallel lines would intersect despite the logical impossibility. Omnipotence leads people to say and think the strangest things!<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">            Analytical philosophers point out that the notion of literal omnipotence is simply nonsense – “internally incoherent” is their term for it.<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1941566034196038608#_edn1" name="_ednref1" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">[i]</span></span></span></a>They demonstrate the senselessness of the word by asking questions such as, “Can God build a rock so big God cannot pick it up?” <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">            Orthodox doctrines of the Church have never made such silly claims about God. The leading authorities in theology, the people who have defined the boundaries of the Church’s faith, have always acknowledged that God’s “omnipotence” does not mean God can do anything which is either logically inconsistent or foreign to God’s nature. Medieval theologians such as Anselm, Thomas Aquinas, and Duns Scotus, along with modern writers such as C. S. Lewis and D. Z. Phillips, all agree that “omnipotence” is subject to those two fundamental limitations.<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1941566034196038608#_edn2" name="_ednref2" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">[ii]</span></span></span></a> <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">            So Scripture, Tradition, and Reason all oppose the view of God as literally omnipotent. Others argue that God has deliberately limited God’s own jurisdiction, withdrawn divine power, in order to let the cosmos be free and personal with a meaningful history instead of just playing out a script or dancing like a puppet.<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1941566034196038608#_edn6" name="_ednref6" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">[vi]</span></span></span></a>These are variations on a single theme. God is not literally omnipotent.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">            Aside from being unbiblical and logically incoherent, equating God with absolute power is corrupting. It deifies power, not love or relationship. It is obeisance to the celestial dominator, the big guy in the sky, the patriarchal, monarchical God. This is not the God of love represented by the Trinity. It is not the Christian God revealed by Christ on the Cross. That God can also be manifest in weakness, defeat, and suffering.<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1941566034196038608#_edn7" name="_ednref7" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">[vii]</span></span></span></a> <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">            Rather than a cosmic patriarch, the God on the cross renounces dominating or controlling power. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams places this decision to renounce power at the center of Christian theology. He maintained that the world is always threatened and often undone by the mysterious power of Nothingness <i>(das Nachtige)</i>which God did not create. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">            We do not worship domination or worship because we are dominated. Once we have clarified that point, “the problem of evil” does not appear so daunting. The first premise simply does not hold water.<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1941566034196038608#_edn9" name="_ednref9" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">[ix]</span></span></span></a>More importantly, once we get past the fixed assumption that divinity consists of dominating power, we can think anew about who God is. We can think far more creatively about how God responds to suffering and evil in the world. The point of denying God’s literal and absolute omnipotence is not to get God completely off the hook for the bad things that happen. The bad guys are threatening the good guys – but the good guys have a magical ring which gives them vast power. The problem is that using the power will turn them into bad guys. The power of the ring corrupts. So their goal is to destroy the ring, and their constant moral challenge is to refrain from using it.  <i>Lord of the Rings </i>was written during World War II, and it has the marks of World War II all over it. So, as we might expect, it reflects the theology of one of the greatest theologians from that time, Reinhold Niebuhr. Notwithstanding Tolkien’s Catholicism and Niebuhr’s Protestantism, they shared some theological perspectives evoked by that time of crisis. Niebuhr said our greatest danger lay not in the evil in the world but in the power used to restrain that evil.
