So what is it that makes him so popular? In my opinion it’s David himself that has led to his huge success as an actor.</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">His friendly, down to earth approach and staunch work ethic make him popular with his contemporaries and he is often praised by co-stars for being a pleasure to work with. In short he is an exceptionally nice man who happens to be extraordinarily talented and part of his appeal is that he doesn't seem to realise just how talented he is.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Tennant's handsome good looks obviously appeal to the female audience, but his allure is as much about his personality, his wicked sense of humour and intelligent banter, which shines through in the rare interviews that he gives to the press.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">His private life remains just that – private. He has been credited with introducing a whole new audience to the works of William Shakespeare during his time with the Royal Shakespeare Company, but he is equally at home meeting up with his fans at Doctor Who conventions.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">His workload is huge and yet he appears tireless. This year alone we will have seen David in no less than four new TV dramas, including the hugely successful Broadchurch on ITV.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He’s also recorded a series of children’s audio books, filmed a new romantic comedy in his native Scotland, is just days away from making his debut as Richard II at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and in November we will see his return to the show that made him a household name when he appears as the Tenth Doctor in the eagerly awaited Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The diversity of his work is reflected in his huge fan base where you are as likely to chat to a 15 year old boy who’s a fan of his time as the Doctor as to 55 year old woman who is a fan of his theatre work.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And it’s not just in the <st1:country-region w:st="on">UK</st1:country-region>that David has fans, his fan base is huge and reaches far and wide, with fans across Europe, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Australia</st1:country-region> and the <st1:country-region w:st="on">USA</st1:country-region>to name just a few territories conquered by Tennant.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So it’s natural that he has now decided to head for American shores where he will team up with Broadchurch’s creator Chris Chibnall in an attempt to recreate the show’s home success across the <st1:place w:st="on">Atlantic</st1:place>. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and union leaders, the crowd of workers chanted "Let us work" and "Shut down the shutdown." Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said the jobs of dedicated public servants should not be held hostage by tea party fanatics:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Two weeks ago a shooting took place not too far from here at the Navy Yard. Hundreds of brave federal police officers responded to stop the carnage and restore security. Today those dedicated officers are not being paid. That's outrageous.</blockquote>Sanders noted the budget that Republican extremists refuse to pass is already a very conservative one. He said there's no reason for them to shut down the government over a budget that is more to the right-wing's liking than anyone else's.<br /><br />As the crowd grew, furloughed federal employees talked about the uncertainty and hardship their families are facing during the shutdown. An aviation safety inspector said he can't do his job to make sure planes are safe to fly. Speakers railed against right-wing lawmakers who put veterans' families and other vulnerable people at risk, just to score political points and to gut a law they don't like.<br /><br />As for Republicans' proposal to reopen some parts of the government with piecemeal funding, workers at the rally said they want all of their coworkers to get back to work, not just some of them. <br /><br />Rep. Ellison said locked out federal workers were prepared to come back and protest every day for as long as extremists in Congress keep holding the government hostage.

The three other Idol winners with albums in the Top 200 were all released in 2012, and now all of them have fallen out of the Top 100. This marks the first week Phillip Phillip's "The World From the Side of the Moon" has fallen out of the Top 100 after 45 weeks, at #117 (from #87 last week), but he is actually <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/phillip-phillips-to-re-release-debut-album-with-new-live-cuts.htm" target="_blank">re-releasing a "special" edition</a> of the album in November with three live tracks, which will also be available as an EP. That should give him a new sales boost in November, at least from his fans. Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" has slipped to #127 for its second trip out of the Top 100 in 74 weeks. And Kelly Clarkson's "Greatest Hits: Chapter One" album hangs in the Top 200 at #171 (from #164 last week.) Frankly I am amazed Kelly's album has lasted on the chart that long since its release back in the Holiday Season of 2012. Having a greatest hits album stay in the Top 200 for two holiday seasons is pretty incredible. I will be interested to see if it can stay in the Top 200 before her new Christmas album, "Wrapped in Red", is released at the end of this month.<br /><br />With all the Idol albums slipping on the charts, the next Idol album is fast approaching, Scotty McCreery's "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/See-Tonight-Deluxe-Scotty-McCreery/dp/B00EUUJICM" target="_blank">See You Tonight</a>" in about 10 days. Since his second album was actually a Christmas album, this should be considered his official "sophomore studio" album, and that means we can compare its sales with the other sophomore studio albums from previous winners. None of the other winners have broken more than 200K with the sales of their second studio albums. (I am disregarding non-winners like Clay Aiken, Daughtry, Kellie Pickler and Jennifer Hudson who all had strong selling second albums.) Frankly, Scotty's holiday collection, "Christmas With Scotty McCreery" sold well enough to be #5 in my above list, which bodes very well for his new collection of much better written material. I am guessing it should sell better than the Christmas album, and being the third October release for Scotty in three years it should comfortably sell well throughout the holiday season, if it is promoted as well (or better) than CWSM or CAD. Since UMG Nashville actually knows Scotty has a good track record selling albums they will likely get behind him and promote him well.

Study: Antibiotic overuse still the rule for sore throat, bronchitis | CIDRAP

<div><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Despite many years of efforts to reduce overuse of antibiotics, needless prescribing of the drugs for sore-throat patients hasn't declined in 13 years, and overprescribing for acute bronchitis has stayed about the same since 1980, according to research released today.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Using survey data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Boston researchers reported that the proportion of sore throat patients who received antibiotics stayed at about 60% from 1997 to 2010. Only about 10% of sore throats should be treated with antibiotics, they said.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">In addition, the researchers said about 73% of bronchitis patients continue to be treated with antibiotics, even though acute bronchitis is rarely caused by a bacterial infection.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The findings were presented today at IDWeek, the annual conference of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and several other medical societies in San Francisco. The sore throat study was published today by <em>JAMA Internal Medicine</em>, but the bronchitis study has not yet been published in a journal.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The studies were conducted by Michael L. Barnett, MD, and Jeffrey A. Linder, MD, both of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The authors mined data from the CDC's National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. The nationally representative surveys collect data on physicians and practices, including patient demographics, reasons for visits, diagnoses, and medications.</span></p><h3 style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><font size="3"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Sore-throat prescribing gets costlier</span></font></h3><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">For the sore-throat survey, the authors counted visits by adults to primary care physicians or emergency departments (EDs) for treatment of sore throat from 1997 through 2010. Patients with injuries, immunosuppression, or concomitant infections were excluded.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The survey data included 8,191 such visits over the 14-year period, which suggests a total of 92 million visits nationwide during that time, according to the journal report. Antibiotics were prescribed at 60% of the visits (95% confidence interval, 57% to 63%), a figure that didn't change over the 14 years.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">In addition, "We found that there was a significant increase in the rate of prescribing broader-spectrum, more expensive antibiotics such as azithromycin," Linder said at an IDSA press teleconference today. The latter drug was prescribed at 15% of visits by 2009-10.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The only common cause of sore throat requiring antibiotics is Group A<em>Streptococcus</em>, accounting for about 10% of cases, according to the report. Penicillin remains the drug of choice for strep throat, Linder said.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">"It turns out that the bug that causes strep throat is resistant to some of those newer, more expensive antibiotics, but never resistant to penicillin," he said. He and Barnett found that penicillin was prescribed in about 9% of sore throat cases, a figure that was stable over the 14 years.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The rate of antibiotic use for sore throat, once as high as 80%, was about 70% in 1993 and dropped to 60% by 2000, where it has remained, the journal report says. "I'd characterize that as moderate to marginal improvement and painfully slow and far from what it should be," Linder said.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The analysis also showed that the share of primary care visits prompted by sore throats dropped form 7.5% in 1997 to 4.3% in 2010.</span></p><h3 style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><font size="3"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Bronchitis data flat since 1980</span></font></h3><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">For the bronchitis study, the authors used the same data sources and general methods but covered the years 1996 through 2010. They identified 3,667 adult medical visits for the problem during that time, suggesting a total of 39 million visits nationwide, according to an IDSA press release.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">They found that antibiotics were prescribed at 73% of the visits overall. In EDs, the rate actually increased from 69% to 73% over the period. fess up friday - make me up

Anyone who has read this blog more than a handful of times might suspect I have tunnel vision when it comes to design (and good cocktails). And it is true, I do. I'm not holding back on you. There isn't some big other chunk of my life that I just don't share on here. Sure, I do other things with friends and family and there are large portions of my day that involve permission slips, lunch boxes, laundry and the rare date night that make life normal. But by and large, I voluntarily consume myself with design.<br /><br />And that won't change. Not ever. Given a choice, I will always and forever spend money on something for my house rather than for myself (not including child needs of course).<br /><br />But as I get busier with work, I would like to start to take a bit more time for myself and give myself a facial, moisturize or even possibly, hold on to your seat here, put on makeup. Crazy talk!
